China approved its first Covid-19 mRNA immunization

China
  • Months after the relaxation of strict Covid-zero regulations caused an increase in cases.
  • China has authorized its first locally developed messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccine against Covid-19.
  • Beijing has rejected approval for the use of mRNA-based vaccines produced by the foreign companies Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna.

Months after the relaxation of strict Covid-zero regulations caused an increase in cases, China has authorized its first locally developed messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccine against Covid-19, the vaccine’s manufacturer announced on Wednesday.

The vaccine was created by CSPC Pharmaceutical Group Ltd. and has been given “emergency use” approval by Beijing’s health authority, according to a statement from the firm.

The company added, without providing more information, that it demonstrated high efficacy in a trial where it was used as a booster shot for individuals who had already received other kinds of vaccines.

mRNA vaccines are regarded as some of the best at preventing fatal diseases and serious illnesses.

mRNA uses small pieces of genetic material that carry instructions telling the body’s cells how to produce a protein, in this case, the spike protein on the coronavirus that causes Covid, whereas conventional vaccines use weakened or inactivated germs to prepare the body for a future attack from the real virus.

The defense system of the body then releases antibodies to combat that spike protein, preparing it for the arrival of the actual coronavirus.

Beijing has rejected approval for the use of mRNA-based vaccines produced by the foreign companies Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna.

Its lack of vaccination was generally believed to have contributed to more serious infections and fatalities after lockdowns and requirements for mandatory quarantine were abruptly lifted in December.

CanSino and other Chinese pharmaceutical companies have previously stated they are working on mRNA-based vaccines to close the country’s immunization deficit.

UK inflation unexpectedly accelerates to 10.4%

UK inflation
  • The Consumer Prices Index (CPI) rose by 10.4 percent in the 12 months to February 2023, up from 10.1 percent in January.
  • The news strengthened the case for another interest rate hike on Thursday from the Bank of England.
  • Expectations had been for a slowdown in UK inflation, but prices jumped for food and drinks — offset only partially by falling motor fuel costs.

UK annual inflation unexpectedly accelerated in February despite central bank efforts to tame a growing cost-of-living crisis, official data showed Wednesday.

The Consumer Prices Index (CPI) rose by 10.4 percent in the 12 months to February 2023, up from 10.1 percent in January, the Office for National Statistics said.

The news strengthened the case for another interest rate hike on Thursday from the Bank of England, despite calls for no change amid global turmoil in the commercial banking sector.

Expectations had been for a slowdown in UK inflation, but prices jumped for food and drinks — offset only partially by falling motor fuel costs.

“Inflation ticked up in February, mainly driven by rising alcohol prices in pubs and restaurants following discounting in January,” said ONS chief economist Grant Fitzner.

“Food and non-alcoholic drink prices rose to their highest rate in over 45 years with particular increases for some salad and vegetable items as high energy costs and bad weather across parts of Europe led to shortages and rationing.”

The BoE is caught between hiking borrowing costs to dampen inflation — or hanging fire amid ongoing fallout from the collapse of two regional US banks and the UBS buyout of embattled Swiss giant Credit Suisse.

Wednesday’s data comes after the UK government last week forecast inflation would slow sharply to 2.9 percent by year-end, with the nation set to avoid recession.

The predictions were published alongside finance minister Jeremy Hunt’s massive £94-billion ($114-billion) cost-of-living measures for this year and next.

“We need to stick to our plan to halve it this year,” Hunt said Wednesday in response to the latest data.

“We recognise just how tough things are for families across the country, so as we work towards getting inflation under control we will help families with cost of living support.”

Inflation around the world had struck the highest levels in decades last year as the invasion of Ukraine by Russia fuelled energy and food prices.

The BoE, whose chief task is to keep inflation close to two percent, will unveil its latest monetary policy decision on Thursday.

US dismisses China mediation on Ukraine as not ‘impartial’

Ukraine
  • The United States said Tuesday it does not see China as capable of being an impartial mediator between Moscow and Kyiv over the war in Ukraine.
  • White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters.
  • He noted that China has refrained from criticizing the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The United States said Tuesday it does not see China as capable of being an impartial mediator between Moscow and Kyiv over the war in Ukraine.

It was the most direct US criticism yet of China’s aim to be a middleman in efforts to end the war.

“I don’t think you can reasonably look at China as impartial in any way,” White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters.

He noted that China has refrained from criticizing the Russian invasion of Ukraine and has continued to buy Russian oil even as the West piles sanctions on Moscow’s energy industry to starve the Kremlin of money to pay for the war.

China, Kirby added, also “keeps parroting the Russian propaganda” to the effect that the US and other countries in the West are to blame for the war for giving such strong support to pro-western Ukraine over the years that Russia felt threatened and justified in invading.

In a summit rich with red carpet pomp, Chinese President Xi Jinping was visiting Russia Tuesday and met with President Vladimir Putin, with the war in Ukraine high on their agenda.

After talks Tuesday they hailed what they called a “new era” in Russian-Chinese relations.

Kirby said the two were linked not so much by an alliance but rather “a marriage of convenience, because that’s what I think it is.”

China has presented a 12-point position paper on the war which includes a call for dialogue and respect for all countries’ territorial sovereignty.

Putin said he was open to talks on Ukraine and praised Beijing’s position paper.

Kirby said Russia and China “want to change the rules of that game,” meaning the rules based international order.

Still, the United States wants to maintain channels of communication with China, he said.

Kirby added that he is not aware of China having provided military assistance to Russia. The United States has said China is considering this big step, but China denies it.

Xi Jinping and Putin hail ‘new era’ of ties in united front against West

Xi Jinping Putin
  • Vladimir Putin accused the West of rejecting Beijing’s proposals to end the Ukraine conflict.
  • China is capable of being an impartial mediator — Washington’s most direct criticism yet of Beijing’s aim to be a middleman in efforts to end the conflict.
  • Energy is a key focus of Xi’s visit, and Putin announced the two countries had reached an agreement.

The leaders of China and Russia hailed a “new era” in their relationship on Tuesday, putting on a united front in Moscow as Vladimir Putin accused the West of rejecting Beijing’s proposals to end the Ukraine conflict.

The nations, eager to curb Western power, expressed concerns about NATO expansion in Asia and agreed to deepen a partnership which has grown closer since Putin launched an offensive in Ukraine.

Putin said he was open to talks on Ukraine and praised Beijing’s 12-point position paper on the conflict, which includes a call for dialogue and respect for all countries’ territorial sovereignty.

“Many of the provisions of the peace plan put forward by China… can be taken as the basis for a peaceful settlement when Kyiv and the West will be ready for it,” Putin said after talks with Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

“However, so far we have not seen such readiness on their part.”

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said Kyiv had invited China to talks, and is waiting for an answer from Beijing.

“We offered China to become a partner in the implementation of the peace formula. We passed over our formula across all channels. We invite you to dialogue. We are waiting for your answer,” Zelensky told a press conference.

The United States, however, said it does not see China as capable of being an impartial mediator — Washington’s most direct criticism yet of Beijing’s aim to be a middleman in efforts to end the conflict.

‘Unlimited possibilities’

Moscow and Beijing have over the past years ramped up cooperation, both driven by a desire to counterbalance US global dominance.

The Chinese leader’s Moscow visit has been viewed as a boost for Putin, who is subject to an International Criminal Court warrant over accusations of unlawfully deporting Ukrainian children.

“I am sure that Russian-Chinese cooperation has truly unlimited possibilities and prospects,” Putin said at a state dinner following the talks, where he toasted the “prosperity” of Russian and Chinese people.

He earlier gushed over the “special nature” of the relationship between the two countries in remarks broadcast on state television.

On the second day of his visit to Moscow, Xi said ties with Russia were “entering a new era”.

Putin called the talks “meaningful and frank” and said that Russia, which has been largely cut out of European markets because of sanctions, would be able to meet China’s “growing demand” for energy.

Energy is a key focus of Xi’s visit, and Putin announced the two countries had reached an agreement on the Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline, which will connect Siberia to northwest China.

US ‘undermining’ global security

In a joint statement, the two leaders took aim at the West, accusing the United States of undermining global security.

“The parties call on the United States to stop undermining international and regional security and global strategic stability in order to secure its unilateral military advantage,” Russia and China said in the declaration.

They also expressed “great concern” over NATO’s growing presence in Asia.

On Monday, Xi and Putin held four and a half hours of talks, calling each other “dear friend.”

China and Russia have often worked in lockstep at the UN Security Council, using their veto power as permanent council members to counter the West.

Russia’s assault on Ukraine has also deepened fears among Western powers that China could one day try to take control of the self-ruled island of Taiwan, which Beijing sees as part of its territory.

China has sought to portray itself as a neutral party in the Ukraine conflict, but Washington has said Beijing’s moves could be a “stalling tactic” to help Moscow.

The United States has also accused Beijing of mulling arms exports to Moscow, claims China has vociferously denied.

Japan PM in Kyiv

Xi’s trip coincides with a surprise visit to Kyiv by Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, who visited Bucha, a town where Russian forces were accused of committing atrocities during their occupation last year.

“Our talks with Mr. Kishida were quite productive,” Zelensky said in his evening address.

“I also heard a very concrete willingness of Japan to work together with us to even more actively mobilise the world for international order, to protect against aggression, to protect against Russian terror,” he said.

Kishida, the last Group of Seven leader to visit the country, had come under increasing pressure to make the trip, as Japan hosts the grouping’s summit this May.

Zelensky confirmed on Tuesday he would participate in the G7 summit via video link.

And the International Monetary Fund said Tuesday it had reached an agreement with Ukraine on a four-year loan package worth around $15.6 billion — intended to support European Union accession talks and reconstruction in the conflict-hit country.

China boosts South Pacific influence with Solomons port deal

China
  • The Solomons have become the unlikely epicentre of a diplomatic tussle between China and the United States.
  • Both China and Solomon Islands denied the pact would lead to the establishment of a permanent Chinese naval base.
  • The Chinese company won a $7 million contract in 2020 to build a new terminal at Munda International Airport.

A state-backed Chinese company has won a contract to develop a key port in Solomon Islands, a major victory in Beijing’s quest to gain a strategic toe-hold in the South Pacific.

Solomon Islands’ government on Tuesday announced that the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation had been chosen to lead a $170 million project to develop the international port in the capital Honiara.

The Solomons have become the unlikely epicentre of a diplomatic tussle between China and the United States, after it signed a secret security pact with Beijing in 2022.

Both China and Solomon Islands denied the pact would lead to the establishment of a permanent Chinese naval base, but the details of the agreement have never been revealed.

Major infrastructure projects in the sprawling South Pacific archipelago are increasingly reliant on Chinese investment, notably the construction of a new stadium for the upcoming Pacific Games in Honiara.

The Chinese company won a $7 million contract in 2020 to build a new terminal at Munda International Airport in Solomon Islands’ Western Province, according to government contract notices.

The company was established by the Chinese government in the 1970s and has played an integral role in the Belt and Road initiative — a mammoth effort to build influence in developing countries across the globe.

It holds contracts for infrastructure projects throughout Africa, the Middle East and the Pacific, according to its company website.

The Honiara port contract was revealed on the same day that White House envoy Kurt Campbell visited Honiara as part of Washington’s latest push to combat China’s swelling economic and diplomatic footprint.

Campbell met with Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare, who was instrumental in turning Solomon Islands towards China after severing diplomatic ties with Taiwan.

For the first time, Ashima Chibber and Rani Mukerji collaborated on the family story Mrs. Chatterjee vs. Norway. The Hindi movie depicts the true story of Sagarika Chakraborty, an Indian mother who battled for custody of her young children after the government abducted them abroad. The director talked about how difficult it was for both of them to shoot some of the movie’s scenes because Rani was sobbing in many of them. The encounter strengthened their friendship.

The director added that because Rani was a mother herself, she could relate to the narrative and emotions very well. In 2014, Rani wed producer-director Aditya Chopra. Their daughter Adira Chopra, age 7, is their only child. The actor was able to portray Sagarika’s three-year journey from the time she first arrived in Norway until she was forced to depart without her children throughout the course of the movie.

Ashima discussed her relationship with Rani in an interview with Mid-Day, saying, “When I decided to become a single mother and I was pregnant, she was the first one I confided in. And I saw a side to Rani which was so brave, compassionate, and supportive of me. Rani is the epitome of motherhood. Who else could have understood this story better than her? So, every day was a revelation to me.”

She continued, “It was an emotional ride for us. Rani was crying, and I was pretty emotional while doing the scenes. I couldn’t imagine that someone had suffered this long; 610 days without your child is excruciatingly painful, everything else is peripheral for me.”

Ashima directed the 2013 comedy Mere Dad Ki Maruti for Yash Raj Films. She has also directed episodes of Yeh Hai Aashiqui and MTV Fanaah: An Impossible Love Story. She is the child’s sole mom.

Last seen with Saif Ali Khan, Siddhant Chaturvedi, and Sharvari Wagh in Bunty Aur Babli 2, Rani. Later this year, the actress will also publish a memoir in which she will discuss her 25 years in the movie business and other topics.

Priyanka Chopra was body shamed by a stylist

Priyanka Chopra
  • Priyanka Chopra disclosed at an event earlier this month that a stylist had recently called her “sample-sized” and insulted her.
  • Priyanka’s comment drew a response from Hollywood stylist Law Roach.
  • He claimed that his remarks were “taken out of context” in a recent interview.

Priyanka Chopra disclosed at an event earlier this month that a stylist had recently called her “sample-sized” and insulted her. The actress continued by admitting that the event brought tears to her eyes. Priyanka’s comment drew a response from Hollywood stylist Law Roach, who avoided naming names. He claimed that his remarks were “taken out of context” in a recent interview.

Law Roach added that he likes Priyanka and talked about dressing the actress, who will soon be seen in the web series Citadel on Prime Video, for various occasions over the previous few years. Zendaya, Ariana Grande, and Bella Hadid were among the celebrities Law Roach has dressed. He recently declared his retirement.

Even though the actor had avoided naming anyone, fashion-focused Instagram account Diet Sabya requested its followers to comment on Priyanka Chopra’s recent statement about how a stylist body-shamed her and Law Roach’s response to the actor’s claims.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by DietSabya® (@dietsabya)

Diet Sabya added, “We need to have this discussion. I shared clips of Priyanka and Law Roach making their comments at an event and in an interview with The Cut, respectively. The gworlies are under pressure to have a large sample number. Because not all designers want to customize, is there strain on the stylists to find clothing? designers are under pressure to invest their money in bespoke samples. and the relationships of authority between management, stylists, and talent. Discuss.”

Soon after, a variety of comments from Instagram users flooded the post’s comments area. While some voiced shock at the actor’s remarks, others questioned what the big deal was. “I seriously don’t get this atrocity of sizes in the fashion world,” one person wrote. The dresses will eventually be worn by customers who are of various shapes and sizes. Why create unjustified stigma? Guys, wake up. It’s 2023.

Law Roach’s response to Priyanka’s statement, “The most important point is Priyanka spoke about her experience, didn’t name anyone,” was also questioned by someone. I don’t understand why Law made it about himself. Law is a cry baby, plain and simple, said another remark. He jumped in and got involved in the discussion even though Priyanka never brought him up.

Some did, however, support the designer. “Law was only stating facts,” one person said. Priyanka is not a representative population. Was she merely provided information or was she body shamed? The differences between the two are subtle. Another individual questioned why celebrities couldn’t purchase their own clothing. “Pay and get your size!” he stated. What more do you want, to stop crying when you have a ton of companies, acting roles, and endorsements?

Perhaps ready-to-wear brands can stock all sizes, but couture brands never can, according to another remark. Only if it makes sense from a commercial perspective will brands customize. Maybe you should just appreciate a designer’s craft and purchase the clothes — at least at cost price — if you’re so sure of your own vision as a celebrity and want to present yourself that way to the world. “You don’t get to whine when you want free clothes,” a third individual remarked. You can then dress whatever you want and no one will make reference to your size because you paid for it yourself.

I’ve been informed many things that are difficult to hear, Priyanka recently said during a conversation with Amazon Studios president Jennifer Salke at the South by Southwest Film Festival (SXSW 2023) in Los Angeles. I come in feeling awful because I was informed yesterday that I wasn’t “sample sized.” I felt terrible about the fact that I’m not a representative sample size and that this is evidently an issue, so I talked about it with my family, sobbed to my husband, and sobbed to my team. Not the majority of us. Sample-sized refers to a size 2. Who fits size 2? There don’t seem to be many palms.

In the soon-to-be-released Russo Brothers web series Citadel, Priyanka will be starring opposite Richard Madden. Recently, the espionage series’ inaugural trailer was made available. Love Again, starring Sam Heughan and Celine Dion, is one of Priyanka’s upcoming endeavors.

We represent our culture by enacting characters from our mythology like Durga, and Radha Krishna in pure classical form. But, in this ballet on River Ganga, we can’t put a very classical dance. So, you get to see a very free style of beautiful dances.”

Hema posted a video from one of her earlier performances before the event to give a glimpse of Ganga. Hema had said, “Basically, it’s a dance ballet on River Ganga by me to spread awareness regarding the cleanliness of River Ganga. It was the initiative of Sushma Swaraj, and she wanted it to happen in Banaras.”

“Ganga is ‘Dev Nadi’. She (Goddess Ganga) is coming from heaven for the benefit of humanity, and wherever the river flows, it is beautiful. It is very important to keep such a river clean. Not just Ganga, I would say, every river in the country should be kept clean. That’s what the concept of this ballet is,” Hema said.

Kapil Sharma’s film ‘Zwigato’ earns 1 crore at the box office

Kapil Sharma
  • After two days of release, the movie has earned 1.05 crore.
  • The story centers on a meal delivery man and the challenges he faces working in the gig economy.
  • Kapil’s portrayal of a food delivery man in the movie.

The movie Zwigato, featuring Shahana Goswami and Kapil Sharma, continued to perform poorly on Saturday even though it saw a slight increase from its meagre 43 lakhs debut. After two days of release, the emotional thriller helmed by actor-director Nandita Das has earned 1.05 crore. The story centres on a meal delivery man and the challenges he faces working in the gig economy.

Taran Adarsh, a film trade analyst, tweeted on Sunday about the movie’s second-day earnings: “Zwigato witnesses an upward trend on day 2 [+44.19 percent], but the 2-day total remains very low due to its biz on day 1… Biz (business) needs to have a miraculous turnaround/jump on day 3 for a respectable weekend total… Friday 43 lakh, Saturday 62 lakh. Total: 1.05 crore. India biz.”

The reviewers gave the movie favourable reviews. Kapil’s portrayal of a food delivery man was highly lauded in the Hindustan Times review of the movie. “Sharma, as Manas, is as earnest and convincing as it gets. It’s a chameleon-like transformation in terms of his body language, demeanour and especially his dialogue delivery without any of his usual Punjabi touch. Full marks to Sharma for getting that right. The way he blends this honesty in his performance with touches of humour without making you pity his life, is endearing and leaves you with a smile.”

Zwigato was originally intended to be a 20-minute short film, but Nandita Das later chose to turn it into a feature film due to its intriguing subject matter. The movie was shown at the Busan International Film Festival, the International Film Festival of Kerala, and the Toronto International Film Festival.

Nandita said of her decision to cast Kapil as the main character in the program,  “I had not seen Kapil Sharma’s show, so I did not know much about him. But one day my eyes fell on a video of Kapil which was from an award show. When I saw that clip, I felt like aam aadmi ki tarah hai. His languages and gestures speak of a common man’s mannerisms.”

“If I smile too much people point finger at me:” says Janhvi Kapoor

Janhvi Kapoor
  • Janhvi Kapoor discussed how people comment on her gym body and how she either smiles or doesn’t smile for the cameras.
  • She is currently filming her upcoming movie Mr. and Mrs. Mahi.
  • Janhvi is the child of late actor Sridevi and director Boney Kapoor.

According to Janhvi Kapoor, there is an “extra sense of pressure” because no matter what she does, critics will find fault with her. The actress was discussing how people comment on her gym body and how she either smiles or doesn’t smile for the cameras. The actress, who is currently filming her upcoming movie Mr. and Mrs. Mahi, is occasionally spotted at movie premieres and parties in addition to going to the gym.

Janhvi is the child of late actor Sridevi and director Boney Kapoor. In a recent interview, she stated that while she is aware of the attention her family receives, ultimately she wants to be recognised for her work.

“I know people are waiting to point a finger at me. If I am smiling too much one day in front of my gym, they say, ‘Dekho kitni eager, kitni desperate hain (look, how eager she is and how desperate she is).’ If I am having a bad day, have got a huge pimple on my face and want to look down and just walk, start my shoot or get it over with, then it’s like ‘Kitni ghamandi hain (how proud she is),” she said.

“Opinions don’t last, what lasts is your work, what you think of yourself. All these things are not tangible. It’s great that I am getting attention. Everyone loves it. But you can’t take it to your head. Relevance isn’t permanent. Whatever attention I am getting today at the start, it was because of my parents. Even now, a great deal of it, is because of the family I am born into. And maybe a little bit now, I’d like to think is because of the work I am doing. That’s what it comes down to it – work. It doesn’t come down to the shorts that I wore to the gym. Those aren’t the things I want to be known for.” continued Janhvi.

Alongside Varun Dhawan, Janhvi has already finished filming Nitesh Tiwari’s Bawaal. She also appears in Mr. and Mrs. Mahi, where she portrays a cricket player. Rajkummar Rao, who also starred in Roohi, is in it.

“Arjun Kapoor keeps me younger:” says Malaika Arora

Malaika Arora
  • Malaika has been courting Arjun Kapoor for a number of years, having previously been married to Arbaaz Khan.
  • She recalled hearing about losing her “marbles” for dating a younger guy at one point.
  • The divorce between Malaika and Arbaaz was completed in 2017.

Dating a person younger than her has proven to be “amazing,” according to Malaika Arora. She has been courting Arjun Kapoor for a number of years, having previously been married to Arbaaz Khan. She recalled hearing about losing her “marbles” for dating a younger guy at one point.

The divorce between Malaika and Arbaaz was completed in 2017. Their boy Arhaan Khan continues to be raised by both of them. In 2019, Malaika and Arjun Kapoor made their Instagram romance public.

Malaika Arora responded, “I think it’s amazing. When I got divorced I was told that tag will always be there. To find love after getting divorced was another thing. And then finding love in a younger man, I was clearly told I have lost my marbles. I would just like to say that love doesn’t have an age. If you fall in love, you fall in love. Irrespective of whether he is a younger man or older man, it should not define the space we are in. I am grateful that I found a partner who understands me. The fact that he is younger keeps me younger. I just feel on top of the world.”

Malaika also talked about her second wedding. She said, “Why is the marriage the be all and end all for everything? Marriage is something which is discussed between two people. If we have to take that plunge, we will think about it and we will decide and we will talk about it. In this moment, we are just loving life. We are enjoying our pre-honeymoon phase.”

Malaika has, however, already been questioned previously about her future intentions with Arjun. On social media and in interviews, the pair is very affectionate towards one another. Arbaaz has been courting Italian model-dancer Giorgia Andriani while Malaika is dating Arjun.

The last time we saw Malaika Arora was on her television series Moving In With Malaika. Her OTT premiere was broadcast on Disney+ Hotstar.

It’s such a different character from what I’ve portrayed in Aashiqui 2 and other films after that, she said in an interview with PTI. She is a lady who is more assertive, proactive, and self-assured. It was energising for me to portray a character who expresses her emotions. She is the neighbour girl with a little “tadka” (spice). For me, it was a first.

Kangana Ranaut spent 65 lakh on vanity car with “traditional” Indian look

Kangana Ranaut
  • The Ambani family, different actors, and even the Mumbai Police use the 65 vanity vans that Ketan owns.
  •  Kangana Ranaut always drives his most expensive vehicle to date.
  • The idea of vanity vans was allegedly first introduced to the film industry by Poonam Dhillon.

According to Ketan Raval, the man who had Kangana Ranaut’s vanity van built for her, it is among the most expensive in the movie business. The Ambani family, different actors, and even the Mumbai Police use the 65 vanity vans that Ketan owns.

Kangana Ranaut always drives his most expensive vehicle to date, according to Ketan. Rangoon was filmed in remote regions of Arunachal Pradesh without restaurants or restrooms, so Kangana revealed to Neha Dhupia on her show No Filter With Neha in 2016 that she had to pee behind rocks.

Ketan stated to Dainik Bhaskar that Kangana desired a conventional appearance. (for her vanity van). She requested that the van be built along the same principles as her home. Her chairs are all made of the original wood, and she has couches with carvings. Her comfort in the vanity van was our top concern. Even the firm that supplied the jet spray for Kangana’s vanity van was chosen by her. The cost to customise my vehicle for Kangana was approximately 65 lakh.

Even though this home is only 27 square feet, you’ll want it after seeing the inside!

Shah Rukh Khan’s vanity van is so large that it is unable to travel anywhere, according to Ketan. When Shah Rukh’s van is unable to travel to certain locations, Ketan claimed that his van always steps in.

The idea of vanity vans was allegedly first introduced to the film industry by Poonam Dhillon. The van’s inauguration featured Sridevi, Anil Kapoor, and Amitabh Bachchan. Poonam had posted a message on social media in 2021 recalling the occasion, saying, “I had no idea I was making history in the film industry when I first began my makeup vanity van. I receive many compliments from artists who appreciate the idea of vanity vehicles.

She had also said, “Shooting on (outdoor) sites would frequently present challenges. No restrooms, no place to consume our meals, and no place to change clothes would all be absent. On stages, artists had to spend time in the heat and mud.

UK government and striking teachers agreed to have “intense talks”

UK strikes
  • The talks — amid a cost of living crisis that has seen inflation top 11 percent last October.
  • The talks would include the National Education Union (NEU).
  • But how can our members ignore the cost-of-living crisis when 40,000 civil servants are using foodbanks?

The UK government and teaching unions on Friday agreed to hold “intensive talks”, a day after health unions said they had reached a deal on pay following a string of damaging strikes.

The talks — amid a cost of living crisis that has seen inflation top 11 percent last October — would focus on “pay, conditions and workload reduction”, according to a joint statement by the government and unions.

Workers across the British economy from dock workers to ambulance staff have joined the wave of industrial action which began last year.

“The Education Secretary and all unions will meet today (Friday), beginning intensive talks, which will continue over the weekend,” the joint statement said.

The talks would include the National Education Union (NEU) whose members staged two walkouts in England this week.

The announcement followed a breakthrough in the standoff between the government and health workers.

Unions representing staff in England including nurses said on Thursday they had agreed a deal to increase pay by 5 percent in the next financial year.

The package, impacting around one million National Health Service (NHS) staff, will also include a further 2.0 percent rise to this year’s salaries and a one-off bonus worth at least £1,250 ($1,510) per person.

It follows months of unprecedented industrial action by nurses, paramedics, emergency call handlers, midwives and others, which was paused to allow for two weeks of formal negotiations with ministers.

Staff have taken to picket lines in protest over low wages that have been hit by decades-high inflation.

The British Medical Association (BMA) which represents junior doctors, meanwhile, said they had exchanged letters with the government following their own three-day stoppage earlier this week.

“Our position has been that we are open to talk in good faith, meaningfully, at any time,” Dr Vivek Trivedi, co-chair of the BMA’s junior doctors committee, told BBC radio.

“So far we haven’t arranged a time for this afternoon but there has been some correspondence between our offices so it does look like we’ll be able to set something up in the near future.”

The NEU teaching union said no further strikes would be announced in order for the talks to begin.

But the civil servants’ PCS union said it was escalating its own industrial action with a five-week strike by its members working in the Passport Office.

“In sharp contrast with other parts of the public sector, ministers have failed to hold any meaningful talks with us, despite two massive strikes and sustained, targeted action lasting six months,” said PCS General Secretary Mark Serwotka.

“They seem to think if they ignore our members, they’ll go away. But how can our members ignore the cost-of-living crisis when 40,000 civil servants are using foodbanks and 45,000 of them are claiming the benefits they administer themselves?” he added.

No longer safe from earthquakes, Istanbul is gripped by fear of the “Big One”

Turkey earthquake
  • A 7.8-magnitude earthquake killed more than 48,000 in Turkey.
  • We have received 15,000 orders since the earthquake, including 8,000 from Istanbul.
  • They are on high alert, always on alert.

The helmet-topped engineer drove his pointy instrument into the concrete to test whether Durmus Uygun’s building will crumble when the feared big quake finally strikes Istanbul.

“I’m pretty confident but my children aren’t convinced, so we’re having this test done,” said Uygun, who lives in one of the Turkish megalopolis’s poorer and more densely packed neighbourhoods.

“If the result is good, we will live in peace. But who knows where we will be when the earthquake hits? We may be at the supermarket or at work — that’s what scares us.”

In his fifties and wearing a black beret, Uygun is far from the only one living in fear in Istanbul.

Turkey’s cultural and economic capital is home to up to 20 million people, many still haunted by memories of the last “Big One” that struck just east of the city in 1999. More than 17,000 people died, including 1,000 in Istanbul.

The city has grown substantially since then, becoming a magnet for people attracted by its booming economy — and oblivious to the active fault line running along its southern edge.

That changed on February 6, when a 7.8-magnitude earthquake killed more than 48,000 in southeastern Turkey and nearly 6,000 over the border in Syria, leaving entire cities in ruins.

A state of collective psychosis has since gripped Istanbulites, who have requested more than 140,000 checks of the type being conducted on Uygun’s apartment building.

Disaster has a 47-percent chance

By the municipality’s own admission, nearly 100,000 buildings will collapse or be seriously damaged in the event of a 7.5-magnitude quake.

Fifty teams of engineers have been roaming the city since last month’s disaster, measuring the quality of concrete and the width of steel reinforcement bars.

If the risk to the building is deemed “very high”, it could be condemned to demolition and occupants forced to move out.

Some of Istanbul’s southern districts lie just 15 kilometres (nine miles) from the North Anatolian Fault, which is distinct from the equally active East Anatolian Fault on which last month’s quake struck.

Seismologists have calculated a 47-percent chance of an earthquake with a magnitude above 7.3 hitting Istanbul within 30 years.

Two blocks from Uygun’s building, hardware store owner Ali Nezir has started selling whistles to locals who fear getting trapped under tonnes of concrete.

“People are scared,” said Nezir, whose small shop is on the ground floor of a 12-storey tower.

Whistles and water bottles

Some residents say they have started storing biscuits and water bottles at the foot of their beds in case the quake comes in the middle of the night, leaving them trapped.

Uygun has prepared some emergency bags for his family containing enough to survive on while waiting for help.

Ugur Erisoglu, an Istanbul wholesaler, offers earthquake survival bags for 200 lira ($10) containing torches, blankets, medical kits and neck braces.

“We used to sell 1,000 a month,” Erisoglu said. “We have received 15,000 orders since the earthquake, including 8,000 from Istanbul.”

The sudden reminder of the threat hanging over Turkey’s main city is forcing some to seriously contemplate moving home.

“There is strong demand for northern districts of Istanbul, further from the fault line, and for individual houses,” said Mehmet Erkek, the general manager of Zingat, a real estate listings platform.

Searches have also exploded for cities such as Edirne and Kirklareli, located in a less quake-prone region 200 kilometres northwest of Istanbul.

‘Always on alert’

Nil Akat, a clinical psychologist, says she has been receiving patients “who are making very concrete plans to move out of Istanbul”.

“Many no longer feel safe at home. They are on high alert, always on alert. Out on the street, they pick out safer looking sidewalks in case a building should collapse.”

Akat said she spoke to some colleagues who told her: “Some (of our patients) can no longer think rationally.”

This fear can grip anyone, without distinction for age or social class, she said.

Cisel Aktimur, a young Istanbulite who enjoys a breathtaking view of the city from her 12th-floor apartment, had been thinking of leaving for some time.

Last month’s disaster has made moving a “priority”, she said.

“Even if nothing happens to my building, I probably wouldn’t be able to bear what I see,” she said.

Chinese President Xi Jinping to visit Russia next week

Xi Jinping
  • Xi last visited Russia in 2019.
  • They will talk about “strategic cooperation”, according to a near-simultaneous statement from the Kremlin.
  • The visit will come just over a year into Moscow’s invasion of neighbouring Ukraine.

Chinese President Xi Jinping will visit Russia next week, Beijing’s foreign ministry said Friday, his first trip to Moscow in nearly four years.

“At the invitation of President Vladimir Putin of the Russian Federation, President Xi Jinping will pay a state visit to Russia from March 20 to 22,” the ministry said in a statement.

Xi last visited Russia in 2019, though Putin attended the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in Beijing last year and the two leaders also met at a regional security gathering in Uzbekistan in September.

The pair will talk about “strategic cooperation”, according to a near-simultaneous statement from the Kremlin.

The two leaders “will discuss deepening the exhaustive partnership and strategic cooperation between Russia and China”, including on the international stage, the Kremlin said, adding, “important bilateral documents will be signed”.

The visit will come just over a year into Moscow’s invasion of neighbouring Ukraine.

China has sought to portray itself as a neutral party in the conflict, but its position has been criticised by some Western leaders as lacking credibility and providing tacit support for Moscow.

In a 12-point position paper on the war published last month, China called for dialogue and respect for all countries’ territorial sovereignty.

China and Russia are also strategic allies, with both sides frequently touting what they call a “no limits” partnership.

Beijing’s foreign ministry did not confirm whether Xi also planned to hold a rumoured call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky when asked at a routine press conference on Friday.

China’s foreign minister on Thursday urged Kyiv and Moscow to restart peace talks “as soon as possible”, while Kyiv said the call also raised the importance of Ukraine’s territorial integrity.

Beijing “hopes that all parties will keep calm, exercise restraint, resume peace talks as soon as possible and return to the track of political settlement”, Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang told his Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Kuleba in a phone call.

Cambodia is happy to get back “priceless” stolen Angkor jewelry

Cambodia
  • Gold crowns, necklaces and amulets were among the trove of treasures from the Angkor period.
  • The Cambodian culture ministry characterised the items,
  • US returned 30 looted items, including bronze and stone statues of Buddhist and Hindu deities.

Cambodian leader Hun Sen unveiled a collection of stolen Angkor crown jewellery on Friday which was recently returned to the kingdom after decades in Britain, pleading for other long-lost treasures to be handed back.

Gold crowns, necklaces and amulets were among the trove of treasures from the Angkor period, which ran from the ninth to 14th centuries AD when the Khmer empire dominated vast parts of Southeast Asia.

The Cambodian culture ministry characterised the items — expected to go on display at the national museum — as “priceless cultural heritage”.

“I appeal to museums, institutions and Khmer artefact collectors to continue to return those items voluntarily to Cambodia,” Hun Sen told the ceremony.

“Heritage items should be returned to their country of origin.”

The culture ministry last month discreetly received 77 pieces from the family of the late, disgraced British art dealer Douglas Latchford.

Two 10th-century sculptures recently returned by the United States were also displayed on Friday.

Dominic Williams, the British ambassador to Cambodia, tweeted that it was an “extraordinary privilege to see these previously stolen artefacts displayed in their ancestral home”.

When he died in 2020, Latchford was awaiting trial in the United States for art trafficking, and the same year his family agreed to return the antiquities to Cambodia.

The family returned five stone and bronze artefacts in 2021.

Thousands of antiques and artefacts were stolen from Cambodia during the conflict and genocide of the Khmer Rouge regime in the 1970s.

Last year, the United States returned 30 looted items, including bronze and stone statues of Buddhist and Hindu deities that were carved more than 1,000 years ago.

The Cambodian government has been negotiating with other countries, including the United States, and private collectors to return more Khmer artefacts to the kingdom.

2 cases of unidentified new Covid variant found in Israel: report

Covid
  • The report said that the variant could be a mix of the BA.1 (Omicron) and BA.2 forms.
  • It also said that the cases were found when patients at Ben-Gurion International airport took an RT-PCR test.
  • This week, 6,310 people in Israel tested positive for Covid.

A report says that Israel’s health ministry has confirmed two cases of Covid variants that have not been recognized. The report said that the variant could be a mix of the BA.1 (Omicron) and BA.2 forms. It also said that the cases were found when patients at Ben-Gurion International airport took an RT-PCR test.

The health ministry said that the patients were in their 30s and had fever, headaches, and aches and pains in their muscles.

Professor Salman Zarka, who is in charge of Covid in Israel, said in the report that the linking of two viruses is a usual thing that happens when there are two viruses in the same cell. The scientist said that the two viruses multiply and share genetic material, which leads to the creation of a new virus.

The study said that Omicron infections have been going down in Israel, but BA.2 infections are still going up. A report said that Israel’s Prime Minister Naftali Bennett met with the country’s Health Minister Nitzan Horowitz because of an increase in Covid cases. After the meeting, the report said, the prime minister ordered strict enforcement of the mark policy in closed areas and urged people to get vaccinated three times.

This week, 6,310 people in Israel tested positive for Covid. The report said that 335 of those people are in bad condition and 151 are on a respirator.

  • The former Taoiseach played a pivotal role in negotiating and implementing the Good Friday Agreement.
  • Brexit Ahern believes the peace will hold after it was passed by overwhelming referendum majorities in both parts of Ireland.
  • “I think the agreement will stand because it’s the will of the people,” he said.

The success of the 1998 peace accords in Northern Ireland can be measured in thousands of lives saved, said former Irish prime minister Bertie Ahern, as new tensions simmer ahead of the agreement’s 25th anniversary.

The former Taoiseach played a pivotal role in negotiating and implementing the Good Friday Agreement with the UK government under Tony Blair.

“The last 25 years, thankfully, we’ve had some problems but small (ones),” Ahern, 71, told AFP in an interview.

“We just hope that it keeps going the right way,” he said, with Northern Ireland again locked in political gridlock and prone to isolated acts of violence.

“I think the thing you’re most proud of… is that thousands of people are alive.”

The April 10, 1998 agreement ended three decades of sectarian conflict over British rule in Northern Ireland, known as “The Troubles”, that claimed 3,500 lives.

The negotiating teams under Ahern and Blair managed to bridge seemingly irreconcilable differences pitting armed pro-Irish nationalists against Northern Ireland’s then pro-UK, Protestant majority.

The multiparty talks brokered by the US government ended in three weeks of “hectic”, “night and day” negotiations, Bertie Ahern recalled.

“It was always a process, and the last 25 years have been so much more pleasant and so much more comforting than the previous 25 or maybe the previous 75,” he added.

Brexit ‘roller-coaster’

Twenty-five years later, while walls and watchtowers on the border have been torn down and British troops have departed, the province remains contested, albeit more peacefully these days.

But the UK’s 2016 vote to leave the European Union, and the emergence of a pro-Irish majority led by the Sinn Fein party, have upended political calculations in Northern Ireland.

For over a year, Northern Ireland’s power-sharing devolved government — a central plank of the peace deal — has been paralysed by a boycott by the pro-UK Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), whose hardline members were suspicious of the Good Friday Agreement.

“Since Brexit it has just been a roller-coaster,” said Ahern, who led Ireland from 1997 to 2008.

“I was totally frustrated and disappointed with the Johnson government,” he explained, referring to UK former prime minister Boris Johnson.

“We went through long periods where there was little or no dialogue between the EU and the UK.”

Ahern is hopeful a new deal with the EU, clinched by UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, to reform post-Brexit trading rules in Northern Ireland, will be enough to bring the DUP back to power-sharing.

“The core issues have been dealt with,” said the former Taoiseach, crediting Sunak with bringing “great energy” to the EU negotiations.

“Then I think they believed that they had a real partner,” he said.

But in Northern Ireland itself, old sectarian tensions remain.

‘Will of the people’

Last month, a senior police officer was shot in front of his son after coaching a youth football team. He remains critically injured in hospital.

Police suspect a dissident nationalist paramilitary group called the New IRA was to blame.

“There’ll always be, I think, some people on both sides who are opposed to the agreement,” said Ahern. “I think the best we can do is to try to get them to oppose it from peaceful means.”

“There’s still work to be done on that,” he continued. “The numbers are small… but any one incident is a problem.”

After leaving office in 2008, Ahern applied his negotiating experience to help manage conflicts in Colombia, Myanmar, Spain’s Basque region and others.

A return in February to his old political party Fianna Fail, from which he resigned in 2012 amid questions over a financial scandal, has prompted speculation of a possible run at the Irish presidency.

Despite the tensions in Northern Ireland and the ongoing fissures over Brexit, Ahern believes the peace will hold after it was passed by overwhelming referendum majorities in both parts of Ireland.

“I think the agreement will stand because it’s the will of the people,” he said.

“If you were to abandon the agreement then you’re abandoning the will of the people in the north and the south.”

Meta fired its employee on maternity leave

Meta
  • A Meta employee disclosed that her maternity leave was shortened as a result of the layoffs.
  • Prior to this, a different Meta staffer who was on maternity leave was also fired.
  • Meta Platforms Inc. is also planning to close approximately 5,000 openings.

Facebook’s parent firm Meta is now eliminating 10,000 more jobs, following 11,000 layoffs last year. Numerous workers who have been affected by the second round of layoffs at the business are now posting their experiences on LinkedIn. After working for the business for three years, one such Meta employee disclosed that her maternity leave was shortened as a result of the layoffs.

During her tenure at the business, Sara Schneider, a member of the talent acquisition and recruiting team, described how she underwent significant life events, such as moving three times, meeting the love of her life, getting married, becoming pregnant, and giving birth to her first child.

She stated in a LinkedIn article,” Unfortunately, my maternity leave was cut short at Meta due to the brutal Meta Layoffs. I spent an amazing 3 years at a company that had so many memories and worked with the best teams and incredible people. This layoff was not performance-based as so many top performers were let go. I am honored to have spent time recruiting for the People Team as well as the Software Engineering Team.”

Ms. Schneider’s post also revealed that she had ”’suffered from an almost fatal post-partum hemorrhage 8 hours after giving birth.”

”During my birth process, I suffered from an almost fatal post-partum hemorrhage 8 hours after giving birth. I lost over 5 Liters of blood with massive blood clots and blood pressure in the 50’s. Although incredibly traumatic, I know I was kept alive for a reason. It gives me perspective that I have a purpose, and the hills and valleys of life are just that – temporary. I made a promise to myself that if I made it out alive, I wouldn’t sweat life so much and be grateful for everything around me,” she further wrote.

After working for the business for three years, one such Meta employee disclosed that her maternity leave was shortened as a result of the layoffs. taffer who was on maternity leave was also fired. In a LinkedIn post, Andi Allen, who served as a Senior Technical Recruiter at Meta, wrote, “I was part of today’s Meta layoffs while on maternity leave”. She also sked, “Has Mark Zuckerberg taken a pay cut?” and stated that her recruitment team was “top-notch” while saying that Meta’s “handling of the situation is appalling”.

Besides the layoffs, Meta Platforms Inc. is also planning to close approximately 5,000 openings, scrap lower-priority projects, and flatten layers of middle management.

Mr. Zuckerberg claims that 2023 will be Meta’s “year of efficiency,” and the business has been informing staff members of this during performance evaluations.

Kim Jong Un and daughter oversee North Korea’s ICBM launch

Kim Jong
  • Kim Jong said North Korea would “react to nuclear weapons with nukes.”
  • South Korea and the United States staged major military drills.
  • The allies have ramped up defence cooperation in the face of growing military.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, accompanied by his daughter, personally oversaw the recent test-firing of the country’s most powerful intercontinental ballistic missile, state media images showed Friday.

The launch on Thursday — Pyongyang’s second ICBM test this year — involved a Hwasong-17 missile, the official Korean Central News Agency reported, adding that it was fired in response to “frantic” US-South Korea joint military drills.

Photographs in the official Rodong Sinmun newspaper showed Kim watching the black-and-white Hwasong-17 — dubbed a “monster missile” by analysts — blast off into the sky.

Some of the images showed him watching the launch with his daughter — never named by state media but identified as his second child Ju Ae by South Korean intelligence.

State media also released images showing the Earth from space, purportedly taken by a camera mounted on the ICBM.

KCNA said the launch “confirmed the war readiness of the ICBM unit”, adding that it “had no negative impact on the security” of neighbouring countries.

South Korea had previously said the missile was fired on a lofted trajectory — up instead of out, typically done to avoid overflying neighbouring countries.

Last year, North Korea declared itself an “irreversible” nuclear power, and Kim recently called for an “exponential” increase in weapons production, including tactical nukes.

Overseeing the Thursday launch, Kim said North Korea would “react to nuclear weapons with nukes” and called for “irreversibly bolstering up the nuclear war deterrent”, according to KCNA.

He also highlighted the country’s “rapid response posture… to cope with any armed conflict and war”, KCNA said.

ICBM threat

In theory, the Hwasong-17 ICBM can reach the continental United States, and with this latest launch, North Korea is trying to emphasise the advanced level of its weaponry, analysts said.

“With the photos of the Earth, Pyongyang seems to be trying to show that it can accurately hit any target the regime wants with its ICBM,” Cheong Seong-chang, a senior fellow at the Sejong Institute, told AFP.

The next step will likely be North Korea firing the missile “at a normal angle”, he said, which would demonstrate it can survive reentry into the atmosphere.

The Thursday launch — Pyongyang’s third show of force this week — came as Tokyo and Seoul sought to thaw long-frozen ties to counter an increasingly aggressive North Korea.

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol flew to Japan Thursday to meet Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, the first such summit in 12 years.

North Korea fired two cruise missiles from a submarine on Sunday, followed by two short-range ballistic missiles on Thursday, as South Korea and the United States staged major military drills.

The allies have ramped up defence cooperation in the face of growing military and nuclear threats from North Korea, which has conducted a series of increasingly provocative banned weapons tests in recent months.

“The fact (that) North Korea has almost normalised ICBM tests over the last year is a concern,” Joseph Dempsey, a researcher at the International Institute for Strategic Studies, told AFP.

Soo Kim, a former CIA Korea analyst, said that Kim’s regime “has essentially desensitised the international community to its weapons tests,” she told AFP.

“We’ve reached a point where an ICBM test draws no greater attention than a short-range missile test,” she said.

“We’ll continue to see North Korea advancing and expanding its suite of weapons capabilities in the days to come.”
