In an interview for Hema Malini’s biography Hema Malini: Beyond the Dream Girl by Ram Kamal Mukherjee, Esha talks candidly about learning the truth about her father’s first marriage.

Esha recounts how she was initially shocked when a classmate asked her if she had “two mothers.” “At that point of time, my mom decided to tell me the truth. Imagine, we were in the fourth standard and had no idea about anything,” she recalls. She adds, “So, that was when I understood that my mother had married someone who was already married to another lady and that they also had a family. But frankly speaking, I never felt bad about it. Till today, I don’t think there is anything wrong with it.”

Esha credits her parents for creating a comfortable environment. “I give full credit to my parents for not making us ever feel uncomfortable,” she says. Despite Dharmendra being from a previous marriage, Esha says their family life was harmonious. She recalls, “Dharmendra would come and share a meal with us every day, but he wouldn’t stay back.”

Dharmendra and Hema Malini married in 1980 and have two daughters, Esha and Ahana. Dharmendra’s first wife, Prakash Kaur, is the mother of his sons, actors Sunny and Bobby Deol.

Esha Deol Opens Up About Comparisons To Hema Malini In Her Early Career

Esha Deol

Bollywood actress Esha Deol stepped into the film industry in 2002 with her debut film “Koi Mere Dil Se Poochhe,” where she starred alongside Aftab Shivdasani. Following that, she appeared in various movies such as “Na Tum Jaano Na Hum” opposite Hrithik Roshan and Saif Ali Khan, “Kyaa Dil Ne Kaha,” “Yuva,” “Dhoom,” “Kaal,” “No Entry,” and several others. Esha successfully carved out her own identity in the industry, despite the shadows of her accomplished parents, veteran actors Hema Malini and Dharmendra. In a recent interview, Esha Deol discussed the comparisons drawn between her and her illustrious parents, particularly her mother, Hema Malini, as she began her acting journey.

During an interview, Esha expressed immense pride in being the daughter of Hema Malini and Dharmendra, two revered personalities in the industry. She acknowledged their legendary status and widespread admiration. Esha confessed that at the outset, she hadn’t anticipated the extent of comparisons that would arise. Commencing her acting career at the age of 18, Esha initially found herself pondering why such comparisons were being made. After reading reviews of her initial films, she realized that comparisons with her mother, Hema Malini, would persist.

Esha recalled, “Initially, it was not something that I thought would happen. So initially I used to wonder why, and used to have chats with my parents and it took me a while. I was 18 when I started. That’s a very naive age, and I remember the excitement of reading your first film’s review, and there was so much comparison to my mom in most of them. That’s when I realized this will continue, and it is something I have got to get used to now. Because I’m here to work and if I’m gonna let this affect me, then that’s not going to be good for me. So let that pressure cooker be on on the side, and I’ll continue doing my work.”

On the professional front, Esha Deol’s recent endeavors include the web series “Hunter: Tootega Nahi Todega,” available for streaming on Amazon Mini TV. She also appeared in the series “Rudra: The Edge of Darkness,” alongside Ajay Devgn and Raashii Khanna. Notably, her short film “Ek Duaa” received a special mention in the non-feature films category at the 69th National Film Awards.

Hema Malini amazes everyone with her dance performance

Hema Malini
  • Hema transformed into Ganga.
  • Esha Deol has since written a letter praising Hema for her original stage performance.
  • Hema had said, “Basically, it’s a dance ballet on River Ganga by me.

Hema Malini wowed the crowd with a ballet that was inspired by the Ganges. During her freestyle dance show at the NCPA ground, which also included a few aerial tricks, Hema transformed into Ganga. Esha Deol, her actress daughter, has since written a letter praising Hema for her original stage performance.

Esha tweeted, “Watched my mum @dreamgirlhema perform Ganga on stage. Absolutely remarkable performance, visually stunning with a very strong message on our environment and river restoration. Must watch her next show. Love you mamma…”

Before bringing the ballet to Mumbai, Hema had previously done it in Nagpur and Pune. She had previously said to ANI, when asked about the dance performance, “I have performed different types of ballet dances around the world, and they have been liked by the public. We represent our culture by enacting characters from our mythology like Durga, and Radha Krishna in pure classical form. But, in this ballet on River Ganga, we can’t put a very classical dance. So, you get to see a very free style of beautiful dances.”

Hema posted a video from one of her earlier performances before the event to give a glimpse of Ganga. Hema had said, “Basically, it’s a dance ballet on River Ganga by me to spread awareness regarding the cleanliness of River Ganga. It was the initiative of Sushma Swaraj, and she wanted it to happen in Banaras.”

“Ganga is ‘Dev Nadi’. She (Goddess Ganga) is coming from heaven for the benefit of humanity, and wherever the river flows, it is beautiful. It is very important to keep such a river clean. Not just Ganga, I would say, every river in the country should be kept clean. That’s what the concept of this ballet is,” Hema said.

Hema Malini discusses women’s careers after marriage

Hema Malini
  • Hema Malini responded to a question about women’s careers after marriage.
  • She never stopped working and joked that people may follow her footsteps.
  • Hema also added that the wife has to make sacrifices.

In response to a query on women’s careers after marriage, Hema Malini provided her response. The seasoned actress and politician was questioned about changes that have occurred as a result of women working after marriage today versus in the past during a press conference. In order to illustrate how women are continuing with their jobs after getting married, the reporter who posed the question mentioned the instances of actors Deepika Padukone and Alia Bhatt.

Responding to the query, Hema claimed that she never stopped working and ‘kept working non-stop’ after marriage. She also jokingly suggested that maybe people did indeed follow her. Hema further stated that the wife must make concessions.

Hema remarked, “I won’t respond much to this because I never stopped working; I got married and kept working nonstop. So perhaps I’m being followed by those who saw me. It’s wonderful that the husband should recognize that the woman he married is a really gifted individual who people like seeing.”

She said, “But the woman has to sacrifice a little, being a wife. She cannot promptly produce a child, then you know there is a pause. Hence, why not if you are that age and willing to work. If the producers are willing to sign you for such a sizable sum, that’s fantastic.”

In 1980, Hema and actor Dharmendra got married. Esha Deol and Ahana Deol are their two daughters. While Dharmendra had yet to make his Bollywood debut in 1953, he married Prakash Kaur, his first wife. Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Vijeta, and Ajeita are Dharmendra’s children from his first marriage, along with two sons and two girls.

Raja Jani and Seeta Aur Geeta (1972), Sholay (1975), Dream Girl and Kinara (1977), The Burning Train, and Alibaba Aur 40 Chor (1980), among many others, had Dharmendra and Hema as co-stars. In 1963, Hema made her acting debut in the Tamil movie Idhu Sathiyam. She debuted in Sapno Ka Saudagar as the star (1968).

In the years that followed, Hema appeared in a large number of Hindi movies, including Tum Haseen Main Jawaan (1970), Jaaneman (1976), Bandish and Do Aur Do Paanch (1980), Satte Pe Satta (1982), and Apne Apne (1987), among others. Hema last appeared in the 2020 film Shimla Mirchi with Rajkummar Rao and Rakul Preet Singh.
