PM offers sympathies to Malaysian PM over loss of lives in floods

LAHORE: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif expressed deepest sympathies on behalf of the Pakistani people for the brotherly people of Malaysia over the loss of lives and property caused by recent floods due to torrential rains in several states of the country.

The prime minister in his telephonic conversation with his Malaysian counterpart Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim, assured that the people of Pakistan stood in solidarity with their Malaysian brothers and sisters during this challenging time.

He also appreciated the swift and effective measures taken by the Malaysian government to address this natural calamity.

The prime minister offered all possible assistance to Malaysia and announced the immediate dispatch of humanitarian aid as a gesture of Pakistan’s support for its Malaysian brothers and sisters.

Referring to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s recent visit to Pakistan in October this year, PM Shehbaz expressed satisfaction with the positive momentum in bilateral relations and reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to further strengthening bilateral cooperation in all areas of mutual interest.

He noted with satisfaction that most of the trade issues highlighted during the Malaysian Prime Minister’s visit to Pakistan had been successfully resolved.

The Malaysian prime minister thanked Shehbaz Sharif for Pakistan’s support and agreed that both nations needed to work together to enhance relations in all key sectors.

The two leaders also agreed to continue high-level visits. The prime minister, as well as the deputy prime minister and foreign minister, are expected to visit Kuala Lumpur early next year, a press release issued by the PM Office said.

In his post on X, the prime minister said during his conversation with the Malaysian PM he also expressed deep admiration for the swift response of the Malaysian government to this natural calamity.

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar also expressed heartfelt grief over loss of lives and destruction resulting from floods in Malaysia.

PM directs for report over provision of relief to rain affected people

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif directed for submission of a report regarding swift completion and transparent provision of relief to the people affected by recent torrential rains across the country.

He also directed the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to accomplish a joint survey report in collaboration with the provinces, besides enhancement of cooperation with the provinces to face the future calamities.

The prime minister also sought an implementation report over his directive in the previous tenure regarding technical improvement of NDMA.

The prime minister was given a detailed briefing by the NDMA about the relief and rehabilitation activities in the wake of recent torrential rains as well as weather forecast and preparedness.

The meeting was attended by Minister for Economic Affairs and Establishment Ahad Khan Cheema, Chairman NDMA Lt Gen. Inam Haider Malik and relevant senior officials.

The meeting was apprised of the recent damages, rescue efforts and distribution of assistance amount. The NDMA with assistance of provinces; specially Balochistan would soon complete a collective verification survey over number of complete and partially damaged houses.

Under the prime minister’s directive, a total of 766,000 kg dry ration would be distributed in Gwadar till March 24 out of which about 388,000 kg ration had been distributed so far till March 16. Moreover, 97,000 kg ration had been distributed in Quetta and Dalbadin, it was further informed.

The prime minister directed that the relief process should be completed immediately, besides ensuring transparency in its distribution. With earlier completion of joint survey, the aid should be provided to the affected people only, he stressed, adding that affected people from the recent rains could not be left in despair and it was among government’s top priority to support them.

The meeting was further informed about the weather forecast during April to June and July to September in the current season and the preparedness of NMDA.

DERA ISMAIL KHAN: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif vowed on Thursday to make all feasible efforts for the rehabilitation of flood-affected Pakistanis, with no party differences or prejudice standing in the way.

During a visit to the flood-ravaged district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa today, the prime minister stated that even though the province was run by another party, it should make no difference.

“In this province, another party dominates. We have no disagreement with it at this moment. We must all work together to accomplish this. This is about Pakistan, about you, about your rehabilitation, about your home, about your children. “God willing, you will see there will be no politics or prejudice in it,” he promised those evacuated by the sudden floods.

He stated that the federal and provincial administrations were both working around the clock to help the impacted people.

He remarked that the federal government has declared Rs 1 million in compensation for the deceased and had sent a message to the chief minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa requesting that the compensation sum be increased from Rs0.8 million to Rs1 million to assist the bereaved families.

Furthermore, the federal government will offer Rs 250,000 to each injured person, Rs 0.5 million to destroyed dwellings, and Rs 0.2 million to partially damaged structures.

Moreover, he expressed that the NDMA and provincial authorities will conduct a joint survey to analyze agricultural damage so that the government can transparently provide compensation.

The prime minister also recalled his conversation with Army Chief of Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa on the matter, who promised him his full cooperation to accomplish the common obligation of rehabilitating the displaced population.
He stated that after his travels to the impacted regions were completed, he would convene a conference within a few days to assess the damage and organize the compensation process.

The prime minister, however, assured residents that the government would not postpone the rebuilding of damaged infrastructure, including roads and bridges devastated by flash floods.

The prime minister, who had previously visited the flood-affected parts of the Tank district, praised the National Highway Authority chairman’s work in rehabilitating road infrastructure in Balochistan and other places. He stressed that the government would not rest until every individual had been rehabilitated and every household had been rebuilt.

During a briefing by the relevant authorities, the prime minister was informed that the flash floods had destroyed 143 dwellings. A survey was conducted to determine the extent of the damage to structures, crops, and livestock.
It was stated that no casualties were recorded in the region due to flooding, except one electrocution.

It was reported that this year saw roughly 350 percent more rain and that everyone, including the NDMA, PDMAs, Pakistan Army, FC, and local governments, was working together to rehabilitate the community.

Mangla, Tarbela dam filled to maximum capacity

Water reservoirs Mangla and Tarbela Dams have reached their maximum capacity of 1,242 feet and 1,550 feet, resulting in record availability of water from the two dams, reports said on Saturday.

The Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) spokesperson said that the filling of the dams to capacity would help in generating power.

Currently, the cumulative quantum of water available at present in Mangla and Tarbela reservoirs stands at 13.336 million acre-feet (MAF) which is a record for water availability during the last 10 years.

Water available in the two dams is also higher in comparison with the average for the last 10 years. During the last ten years, the average water availability in the two dams was recorded as 11.163 MAF.

The two dams will now be able to produce more power in the coming days due to the availability of more water.

According to the reports, WAPDA hydel power stations have been providing more than 8,500 MW for the last two consecutive days and hydel generation may touch 9,000 MW mark.

Flood alert issued for River Chenab

Meanwhile, officials have issued a flood warning for River Chenab in the wake of heavy monsoon rain, directing all the concerned departments to monitor monsoon rains and rise in the river water level closely.

Officials said they have also ordered keeping flood-fighting machinery operational at all levels.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Amir Khatak directed all departments to prepare their respective staff duty rosters. The DC also ordered all schools marked for flood relief camps to finalize food arrangements.

Khatak said the departments concerned are closely monitoring water situation in rivers.
