A film production so massive that it disrupted an entire industry sounds unbelievable, but that’s exactly what happened over two decades ago when Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas inadvertently led to the postponement of hundreds of weddings in Mumbai.

The 2002 magnum opus, based on Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s novel, starred Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai, and Madhuri Dixit, and was known for its grand production scale.

Recently, Devdas cinematographer Binod Pradhan reflected on the film’s extravagant set design in a conversation with Friday Talkies. He described the breathtaking set of Chandramukhi’s kotha, which stretched nearly a kilometer in length.

“My entourage of assistants, we went to see how the set was being constructed, and we were shocked. We were wondering how to light it. I took a round of the set from the lakeside and told my assistant to put a 100-watt bulb at the end. That’s how we started lighting the set,” Pradhan recalled.

The sheer scale of the production required an enormous power supply, monopolizing generators across Mumbai. “They say that I used all the available generators in Mumbai for that set,” he revealed.

The impact was so significant that many weddings were postponed. “It was such a big area that we had to use so many generators. They used to say Binod ji caused so many weddings to be cancelled because there were no generators to be used in the weddings,” Pradhan added.

Made on a budget of ₹50 crore, Devdas was the most expensive Indian film at the time. It premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2002 before its global release in July, ultimately earning ₹168 crore worldwide and cementing its place as a cinematic spectacle.

Fans can now look forward to an even grander season 2 of “Heeramandi,” as actor Sanjeeda Shaikh, who portrayed Waheeda in the series, shared a major update.

In an interview with News18, Shaikh revealed, “The actors are ready, and it will be bigger and better.” However, she acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding the timeline for filming, noting Bhansali’s unpredictable working style. “The decision to return to the set is equally uncertain,” she said.

Shaikh also reflected on the transformative impact of Heeramandi on her career. “I used to watch actors talk about being ‘Bhansalified’ and wondered when my turn would come. Now, during meetings, makers praise my performance, which feels incredibly rewarding,” she shared.

Expressing gratitude for the show’s success, Shaikh added, “Actors want recognition for their performances, characters, and shows, and being part of a highly searched show is truly flattering.”

The Netflix series, set in pre-independence India, features an ensemble cast, including Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, and Aditi Rao Hydari. Praised as “dreamy, magical, and exceptional” by Pinkvilla, the series continues to enchant viewers worldwide.

He gave me a hug and said, ‘You don’t need to come to work. I understand, it’s totally fine. We’ll shut the sets down. We’ll do it when you’re ready.’”

Despite the grief, Priyanka returned to work just four days later. “The one thing my father would’ve never wanted me to do was not go to work. So I went back to work… I put all my grief into those fight scenes,” she said.

Priyanka and Bhansali’s collaborations include her titular role in Mary Kom (produced by Bhansali) and films like Goliyon Ki Raasleela: Ram-Leela and Bajirao Mastani.

Looking ahead, Priyanka stars in The Bluff, Heads of State, and Citadel Season 2, while Bhansali is filming Love & War with Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, and Vicky Kaushal.

I had learnt Bharatnatyam, but this was Kathak and it was Kathak through the eyes of Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who is perfectionist max and also knows a lot. And it was about getting it right and not disappointing him. That really gave me sleepless nights.”

Aditi also recalled how Bhansali challenged her during emotional scenes. “The scenes where I had to give rousing speeches, Sanjay sir kept me hungry for a day because these scenes don’t come naturally,” she explained. “I was really struggling with these scenes and he used to pull my leg… He said, ‘don’t eat’. I was very happy and thanked him.”

Set against the backdrop of the Indian independence struggle, Heeramandi explores the lives of courtesans in the red-light district of Lahore during the British Raj. A second season is already in development.

I am unable to understand how did this happen. I can’t believe it. I wish he did not do this and reached out for help instead. But what can we say in such a tragic situation, it is very difficult to understand what has happened. It is very sad…We have lost someone who was very talented.”

Among the attendees at the funeral were Ashutosh Gowariker, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Mukesh Rishi, Manoj Joshi, Madhur Bhandarkar, and Sonali Kulkarni. Despite Nitin Desai having worked with numerous top Bollywood celebrities, the turnout was relatively low. Aamir Khan addressed this matter, stating that perhaps some people couldn’t come for various reasons. He emphasized that Nitin Desai held a special place in everyone’s heart, and he offered his heartfelt condolences to the grieving family.

Nitin Desai’s impressive contributions to the film industry were not only recognized by moviegoers but also honored with four National Awards. His immense talent extended beyond films, as his vast studio also played host to Salman Khan’s reality show, Bigg Boss.

Earlier last week, Sanjay released a teaser poster for Heeramandi. Ted Sarandos, the CEO of Netflix, came in Mumbai to promote Netflix India and debut the poster alongside Sanjay. In addition, he lauded the Indian director for his skill in achieving harmony between “style, drama, and content.”

“When I consider your career, the universes you are creating are all quite diverse, including Silence (Khamoshi), Black, Gangubai Kathiawadi, and now Heeramandi. You have a special talent for moving a story along while striking the ideal balance between style, drama, and content.

“The pictures you put on the screen and the way they make you feel, sometimes it’s a tiny dance step and other times it’s in a line of conversation, it’s subtle and wonderfully impactful. You appear to put a lot of energy into the brief emotional moments. It is a lovely form of art, the boss declared.

In a previous interview, a question on Sanjay’s ability to create “realistic films” was posed.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali stated in the interview that he enjoyed both mainstream and independent films, as well as documentaries. The filmmaker also mentioned in the same interview from 2016 that he didn’t care what the film business thought. He claimed that just because a movie bombs at the box office does not indicate that the director or star have lost their touch.

The director had responded, “Maybe,” when asked if he would “ever produce a realistic film,” to Filmfare in 2016. I develop my own worlds for my movies. That’s how I always do things. Without comparing or ranking anyone, I also expect people to realize that if Anurag Kashyap makes a certain type of movie, SLB also makes a certain type of movie. We must acknowledge the coexistence of Raj Kapoor and Bimal Roy.

Gangubai Kathiawadi, starring Alia Bhatt, was Sanjay’s final motion picture (2022). Recently, Sanjay released the teaser for his eagerly anticipated film, Heeramandi. Sidharth was dressed for a perfume launch event in a white shirt, black pants, and a cream jacket with a bow tie. On discussing the perfume, he added, “I have scents for the day and for the evening. This is a significant addition to one of my nighttime scents. I’m hoping my wife would like it.”

The footage was uploaded to Instagram by a fan page. Following the video, a viewer commented, “A short sentence yet has a valuable message.” One more said, “Very nice.”

On February 7, Sidharth and Kiara exchanged vows in a private ceremony at Suryagarh Palace, a resort close to Jaisalmer in Rajasthan. On February 12, they threw a reception for their close friends in Delhi and then in Mumbai. At the Mumbai reception, celebrities including Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Alia Bhatt, Kajol, Gauri Khan, and Karan Johar were present.

On Instagram, the pair has been posting inside shots of the wedding festivities. In a recent post, Kiara wished her mother a happy birthday and shared family photos from the wedding festivities. Together with a golden Sangeet and a day wedding, they also had a mehendi-haldi ceremony.

One of the most well-liked wedding videos saw Kiara walking down the aisle in a soft pink lehenga and hugging Sidharth in a candid clip from the varmala ceremony. Sidharth joked that she was wasting time as he looked at his watch while she danced a little and made a motion as if she were drawing him towards her.

While developing their 2021 movie Shershaah, Sidharth and Kiara had become close. Although it was released digitally, both the public and the critics praised it highly. Kiara played his fiancée Dimple Cheema, and Sidharth played the victim Vikram Batra.

At last night’s Dadasaheb Phalke International Film Festival in Mumbai, celebrities walked the red carpet. Anupam Kher, Varun Dhawan, Tejasswi Prakash, Dulquer Salmaan, Shriya Saran, and Rishab Shetty were among the numerous celebrities who attended the event. Veteran actress Rekha and Alia Bhatt also went to the awards show and talked openly on the red carpet. The night was won by the two Bollywood queens thanks to their stunning sarees and remarkable elegance.

At the Dadasaheb Phalke International Film Festival, Alia Bhatt and Rekha took home the night’s award. On Monday, the two of them attended the festival. Rekha looked as elegant as ever in her signature beige and golden silk saree, while Alia chose a saree with white net embroidery. On the red carpet, the two women shared candid moments and posed for the photographers.

A gold patti border, intricate floral thread embroidery, and sequin work adorn Alia’s ivory saree. The pallu fell from her shoulder as she draped the saree in a traditional manner. The ensemble was completed by a matching blouse with a cropped length, plunging neckline, half sleeves with sheer panels, and thread embroidery.

Last but not least, Alia styled the six yards with only a diamond ring and matching, sleek earrings. The glam picks were completed by center-parted open tresses, a delicate black bindi, a nude pink lip shade, subtle eye shadow, light mascara on the lashes, blushed, glowing skin, and kohl-lined eyes.

In contrast, Rekha wore a beige silk saree with a floral pattern and a wide golden patti border, and she looked as glamorous as ever. The veteran star chose a gold blouse with a round neck to complement her signature six yards in traditional fashion. Rekha ultimately selected gold jhumkis, matching bangles, a ring, a bold red lip color, sleek eyeliner, heavy mascara, gold eye shadow, and minimal glowing makeup to complete the look.

In the meantime, Alia Bhatt won the Best Actress award at the Dadasaheb Phalke International Film Festival for her performance as Gangubai Kathiawadi, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film. A special award was also presented to Rekha for her “Outstanding Contribution to the Film Industry.”

In a recent interview, Anurag Kashyap discussed the director Sanjay Leela Bhansali. A few years after the premiere of the director’s Devdas (2002), which starred Shah Rukh Khan, he also discussed Sanjay’s response to his film Dev D (2009). The renowned Bengali novel Devdas by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay is the basis for both movies. However, according to Anurag in a recent interview, Sanjay “hated” his interpretation of Devdas.

Sanjay did not like Dev D, according to Anurag Kashyap, who even said that Dev D had “ruined Chandramukhi and Paro.” In Sanjay’s Devdas, Aishwarya Rai played the role of Paro, Devdas’ childhood friend, while Madhuri Dixit played his confidante Chandramukhi, a courtesan. Mahi Gill portrays Abhay’s childhood sweetheart in Anurag’s contemporary rendition of the Bengali classic, which is set in modern-day Punjab and Delhi and features Chanda (Kalki Koechlin), a sex worker.

Anurag responded, “He (Sanjay Leela Bhansali) despised it,” when asked what Sanjay thought of Dev D in a recent interview with Unfiltered By Samdish. You have damaged Chandramukhi and Paro, he claimed. He mentioned it to Vikram (Vikramaditya Motwane), his assistant and a co-writer on Dev D, rather than to me. Bhansali is an expert. He is a complete freak of genius when it comes to music and dancing. He has now also learned about violence. He displayed violence in Gangubai (Alia Bhatt’s 2022 film Gangubai Kathiawadi). I went and told him, “tu apne limitations se bahar nikla,” since I was so ecstatic about it (you are now coming out of your limitations)

Anurag continued by describing how Sanjay had been angered by a magazine article he had once written about the film Black (2005). Anurag claimed the director of the movie with Rani Mukerji and Amitabh Bachchan believed he was “his adversary.” Black asked Anurag if he liked him, and Anurag said, “I didn’t. I refused to believe it. Sanjay was really unhappy when I wrote about why I didn’t believe it. Since it was personal to him, the work was not intended for publication. Hum dost ho gaye hain, ab wapis. When the ice breaks, it will be mujhe karna pada khud jaa ke (we are friends again after I went and broke the ice with him)… Anurag is an extremely reserved individual.

He has a terrible public presence. I keep reminding him that he should let go of that. He takes his time before he can trust someone. He also manages his personal trauma. He grew up watching the movie business extremely carefully and detested it.

Alaya F and rookie Karan Mehta played the main characters in Anurag Batra’s final movie, Almost Pyaar with DJ Mohabbat. It became available on February 3. The movie saw Anurag and Amit Trivedi, who had previously collaborated on Dev D, return to the romantic musical genre.

The Alia Bhatt-starring film Gangubai Kathiawadi is apparently no longer eligible for the BAFTA 2023 longlist. RRR, the SS Rajamouli film, has now joined the race, though.

The longlist for the 24 categories of the BAFTA 2023 (British Academy Film Awards) has finally been released. The SS Rajamouli-directed film RRR, one of the biggest blockbusters to come out of India in 2022, has been added to the BAFTA 2023 longlist under the heading “Film not in the English language.” The creators of RRR announced the incredibly thrilling update on Friday, January 6, via a social media post. However, the film Gangubai Kathiawadi, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, is no longer eligible for a BAFTA.

Rumor has it that the film starring Alia Bhatt has been nominated for every major category on the BAFTA 2023 longlist, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Leading Actress. As part of the BAFTA Awards campaign, director Sanjay Leela Bhansali attended some significant events in London. This time, the director gave his first-ever BAFTA masterclass, during which he spoke at length about his storied Bollywood career. During a Q&A session, he spoke with film students as well. Bhansali had already received a BAFTA nomination for the beloved Devdas, starring Shah Rukh Khan, in 2003.

RRR on the BAFTA longlist for 2023
On the other hand, the Ram Charan-Jr. NTR starrer has unquestionably made quite an impact on international platforms and has received nominations at major prestigious film awards in 2023. ” The BAFTA longlist for the “film not in the English language” category includes a mention of RRR. It is located next to “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “Argentina, 1985,” “Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths,” “Close,” “Corsage,” “Decision to Leave,” “EO,” “Holy Spider,” and “The Quiet Girl,” among others. ” SS Rajamouli’s film has been added to the longlist, according to the official press release posted on the BAFTA website.

The RRR
The imaginary meeting of Alluri Sitarama Raju and Komuram Bheem, two of Telugu States’ most renowned liberation fighters, is at the heart of SS Rajamouli’s magnum opus. Ram Charan plays Alluri Sitarama Raju in the project, which was written by KV Vijayendra Prasad, and Jr. NTR plays Komuram Bheem. Bollywood icon Ajay Devgn had a cameo appearance, and Alia Bhatt played Alluri Sitarama Raju’s lady love Sita in the film. A follow-up to RRR is expected very shortly.

Gangubai
The biographical drama is based on a real-life lady named Gangubai Kothewali, a sex worker who subsequently rose to become a mafia queen. It was the first time Alia Bhatt and filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali worked together on camera. Alia received a great deal of praise for her outstanding work as the title character Gangubai in the movie, which also starred Ajay Devgn in a supporting role and a stellar ensemble cast that included Vijay Raaz, Shantanu Maheshwari, Seema Pahwa, and others.
