When SRK’s movie Devdas caused many weddings to be cancelled

Devdas
  • Devdas led to the postponement of hundreds of weddings in Mumbai.
  • The sheer scale of the production required an enormous power supply.
  • The impact was so significant that many weddings were postponed.

A film production so massive that it disrupted an entire industry sounds unbelievable, but that’s exactly what happened over two decades ago when Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas inadvertently led to the postponement of hundreds of weddings in Mumbai.

The 2002 magnum opus, based on Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s novel, starred Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai, and Madhuri Dixit, and was known for its grand production scale.

Recently, Devdas cinematographer Binod Pradhan reflected on the film’s extravagant set design in a conversation with Friday Talkies. He described the breathtaking set of Chandramukhi’s kotha, which stretched nearly a kilometer in length.

“My entourage of assistants, we went to see how the set was being constructed, and we were shocked. We were wondering how to light it. I took a round of the set from the lakeside and told my assistant to put a 100-watt bulb at the end. That’s how we started lighting the set,” Pradhan recalled.

The sheer scale of the production required an enormous power supply, monopolizing generators across Mumbai. “They say that I used all the available generators in Mumbai for that set,” he revealed.

The impact was so significant that many weddings were postponed. “It was such a big area that we had to use so many generators. They used to say Binod ji caused so many weddings to be cancelled because there were no generators to be used in the weddings,” Pradhan added.

Made on a budget of ₹50 crore, Devdas was the most expensive Indian film at the time. It premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2002 before its global release in July, ultimately earning ₹168 crore worldwide and cementing its place as a cinematic spectacle.

Shah Rukh Khan Reveals Bad Impact of Film ‘Devdas’ on Him

Shah Rukh Khan
  • Shah Rukh Khan discussed his method of acting approach.
  • He revealed that he turned to alcohol to embody the character.
  • SRk said that he did not want people to hate his character.

Shah Rukh Khan, who portrayed an alcoholic in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s 2002 hit Devdas, recently discussed his method acting approach at the Locarno Film Festival.

He revealed that he turned to alcohol to embody the character, a choice that had both positive and negative consequences. “It might have helped, but I started drinking after the film and that’s one downside to it,” he admitted, noting that the role earned him the Best Actor award the following year.

Reflecting on his performance, Shah Rukh explained his intentions behind the character, originally created by Bengali novelist Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay in 1917. “I didn’t want you to feel love for him, but I didn’t want you to hate him… I just wanted him to appear indescribable,” he shared. Bhansali’s Devdas was a remake of Bimal Roy’s 1955 version featuring Dilip Kumar, and it starred Aishwarya Rai as Paro and Madhuri Dixit as Chandramukhi, alongside Jackie Shroff and Kirron Kher.

The film, produced by Bharat Shah’s Mega Bollywood, made headlines by premiering at the Cannes Film Festival and was notable for its budget of ₹50 crore, ultimately grossing ₹99.88 crore globally.

Looking ahead, Shah Rukh’s next project is King, a crime drama directed by Sujoy Ghosh, set for release during Eid 2026, where he will share the screen with his daughter, Suhana Khan.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali asked Ameesha Patel to retire after watching Gadar (2001)

Ameesha Patel

Actress Ameesha Patel is currently basking in the remarkable success of her recent blockbuster, Gadar 2. Returning to her cherished role as Sakeena after 22 years, she has once again captured the hearts of audiences. Her on-screen chemistry with Sunny Deol stands as a significant highlight of the film. The iconic songs recreated from the original have also evoked a sense of nostalgia. This triumph is reminiscent of her experience when the first instalment of Gadar hit screens in 2001, marking only her second Hindi film. Ameesha Patel recently recounted an intriguing incident from that time after the release of Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, where she shared how acclaimed director Sanjay Leela Bhansali advised her to retire after witnessing the film’s impact.

In a candid interview with an Indian publication, the stunning actress delved into how her life underwent transformation post the releases of “Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai” and “Gadar.” She recounted a moment involving Sanjay Leela Bhansali, known for his directorial works like “Devdas” and “Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam.” In 2001, after viewing the original Gadar, Bhansali penned a heartfelt letter of praise to Ameesha Patel. During a subsequent meeting, he candidly advised her to retire. Ameesha shared, “After watching Gadar, Sanjay Leela Bhansali wrote a really beautiful complimentary letter to me, and when I had a meeting with him, he said ‘Ameesha, you should retire now.’ I was like ‘why?’ I didn’t understand.”

Continuing, Ameesha revealed Bhansali’s reasoning, “He said, ‘Because you have already achieved in two films which most people don’t achieve in their entire career. Once in a lifetime a ‘Mughal-e-Azam,’ ‘Mother India,’ ‘Pakeezah,’ ‘Sholay’ get made, you had it in your second film, so what next?’ I didn’t understand it at that time because I was a kid, I was so new to the film world (to know) what he meant by setting the bar high.” Over time, Ameesha came to realize the implications of his words as all her subsequent films, whether successful or not, were consistently measured against the benchmark of Gadar, which posed a challenge for her.
