RRR gets on the BAFTA 2023 longlist instead of Gangubai Kathiawadi

The Alia Bhatt-starring film Gangubai Kathiawadi is apparently no longer eligible for the BAFTA 2023 longlist. RRR, the SS Rajamouli film, has now joined the race, though.

The longlist for the 24 categories of the BAFTA 2023 (British Academy Film Awards) has finally been released. The SS Rajamouli-directed film RRR, one of the biggest blockbusters to come out of India in 2022, has been added to the BAFTA 2023 longlist under the heading “Film not in the English language.” The creators of RRR announced the incredibly thrilling update on Friday, January 6, via a social media post. However, the film Gangubai Kathiawadi, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, is no longer eligible for a BAFTA.

Rumor has it that the film starring Alia Bhatt has been nominated for every major category on the BAFTA 2023 longlist, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Leading Actress. As part of the BAFTA Awards campaign, director Sanjay Leela Bhansali attended some significant events in London. This time, the director gave his first-ever BAFTA masterclass, during which he spoke at length about his storied Bollywood career. During a Q&A session, he spoke with film students as well. Bhansali had already received a BAFTA nomination for the beloved Devdas, starring Shah Rukh Khan, in 2003.

RRR on the BAFTA longlist for 2023
On the other hand, the Ram Charan-Jr. NTR starrer has unquestionably made quite an impact on international platforms and has received nominations at major prestigious film awards in 2023. ” The BAFTA longlist for the “film not in the English language” category includes a mention of RRR. It is located next to “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “Argentina, 1985,” “Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths,” “Close,” “Corsage,” “Decision to Leave,” “EO,” “Holy Spider,” and “The Quiet Girl,” among others. ” SS Rajamouli’s film has been added to the longlist, according to the official press release posted on the BAFTA website.

The RRR
The imaginary meeting of Alluri Sitarama Raju and Komuram Bheem, two of Telugu States’ most renowned liberation fighters, is at the heart of SS Rajamouli’s magnum opus. Ram Charan plays Alluri Sitarama Raju in the project, which was written by KV Vijayendra Prasad, and Jr. NTR plays Komuram Bheem. Bollywood icon Ajay Devgn had a cameo appearance, and Alia Bhatt played Alluri Sitarama Raju’s lady love Sita in the film. A follow-up to RRR is expected very shortly.

Gangubai
The biographical drama is based on a real-life lady named Gangubai Kothewali, a sex worker who subsequently rose to become a mafia queen. It was the first time Alia Bhatt and filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali worked together on camera. Alia received a great deal of praise for her outstanding work as the title character Gangubai in the movie, which also starred Ajay Devgn in a supporting role and a stellar ensemble cast that included Vijay Raaz, Shantanu Maheshwari, Seema Pahwa, and others.
