Kate Winslet will star in I Am, Channel 4’s award-winning female-led drama anthology series, in the first feature-length episode.
I Am Ruth, in which the Oscar winner will feature with her daughter Mia Threapleton, will begin production at the end of April. Three new episodes will be titled after their principal characters, like in the previous two series, with more cast and plot details to come.
The stories for each film were devised in a creative cooperation with the starring actors, with semi-improvised language, and directed by BAFTA-winning director Dominic Savage (The Escape). The series of separate single videos highlights women’s experiences in emotionally raw, thought-provoking, and personal situations.
The season has capitalised on its great start in 2019, when it became Channel 4’s most successful new ten-o’clock drama in six years. Vicky McClure (I Am Nicola), Gemma Chan (I Am Hannah), and Samantha Morton (I Am Kirsty), who was nominated for a BAFTA for her portrayal, were among the cast members for the first season.
Suranne Jones (Gentleman Jack), who was also nominated for a BAFTA for I Am Victoria, Letitia Wright (Black Panther, Top Boy) for I Am Danielle, and Lesley Manville (Phantom Thread) for I Am Maria featured in the second series.
“It is an absolute privilege for me to be working and collaborating with Kate Winslet on this first film in the new series of I Am for Channel 4,” Savage added. Kate is a legend, an extraordinary and magnificent actress, and I can’t wait to start filming this one-of-a-kind and essential narrative that we’ve co-created.”
“I have always loved Dominic’s work and, in particular, his devotion to portraying genuine tales,” Winslet, who has received critical praise for her work on television (Mare of Easttown, Mildred Pierce) as well as the big screen (The Reader, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), stated. The popularity of British television is at an all-time high, and I’m thrilled and honoured to be a part of it, especially right now
Me+You Productions is behind I Am. Richard Yee and Dominic Savage serve as executive producers, with Caroline Hollick and Gemma Boswell of Channel 4 supervising the project. Krishnendu Majumdar and Josh Hyams, co-founders of Me+You, are producing the series. I Am is co-financed by Sky Studios, with NBCU Global Distribution handling worldwide distribution.
