Mexico: Over 340 migrants discovered in a truck trailer

Mexico
  • Mexican authorities discovered over 340 people including 103 unaccompanied minors.

  • Everyone appeared to be unharmed, and the trailer had fans and ventilation ports.

Mexican authorities discovered over 340 people, including 103 unaccompanied minors, in an abandoned truck trailer in the state of Veracruz.

Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, and Ecuador were among the countries represented by the migrants. It is one of the most recent and significant discoveries of migrant children travelling through Mexico.

According to officials, everyone appeared to be unharmed, and the trailer had fans and ventilation ports.

The location of the driver is unknown.

Many undocumented migrants fleeing poverty and violence in Central America end up paying large sums of money to people smugglers to cross the US border.

Last year, 53 migrants were discovered dead in an abandoned truck trailer in Texas, the United States.

According to Mexico’s National Migration Institute (INM), 343 people were discovered in the vehicle on Sunday night.

They were discovered on a common route used by migrants to reach the US border.

According to officials, the migrants wore color-coded bracelets to identify themselves as clients of smugglers.

Plastic bottles and trash were strewn across the trailer’s floor, according to an image.

Mexican social services will care for the migrants until their legal status is determined.

According to border patrol data obtained by a channel in October, at least 853 migrants died in the previous year while attempting to illegally cross the US-Mexico border.

This made the fiscal year 2022 the deadliest year for migrants in US history, far exceeding the previous record of 546 migrant deaths in 2021.

During the same time period, the US Border Patrol apprehended a record 2.2 million migrants at the southwest border.

Bakhmut: Street fighting but Russia is not in control

Russia
  • Russia does not control the eastern city, according to its deputy mayor.
  • Thousands of Russian troops were killed in the attempt to take Bakhmut.
  • According to Ukrainian commanders, Russia has lost seven times as many soldiers as they have.

Russian and Ukrainian forces are fighting in Bakhmut’s streets, but Russia does not control the eastern city, according to its deputy mayor.

According to Oleksandr Marchenko, the remaining 4,000 civilians are living in shelters without access to gas, electricity, or water.

Mr Marchenko said “not a single building” had remained untouched and that the city is “almost destroyed”.

Bakhmut has seen months of fighting as Russia attempts to seize control.

“There is fighting near the city and there are also street fights,” Mr Marchenko said.

Taking the city would be a rare battlefield victory for Russia in recent months. Nonetheless, the city’s strategic importance has been called into question.

According to some experts, any Russian victory could be pyrrhic, or not worth the cost.

Thousands of Russian troops were killed in the attempt to take Bakhmut, which had a pre-war population of around 75,000 people. According to Ukrainian commanders, Russia has lost seven times as many soldiers as they have.

According to UK military intelligence, Russian advances in the northern suburbs have exposed Ukraine-held areas to Russian attacks on three sides.

Mr Marchenko accused the Russians of having “no goal” to save the city and that it wanted to commit “genocide of the Ukrainian people”.

“Currently there is no communication in the city so the city is cut out, the bridges are destroyed and the tactics the Russians are using is the tactic of parched land,” Mr Marchenko told.

Bakhmut’s demise has long been predicted, but it has yet to occur after more than six months. As a result, any reports of a possible Ukrainian withdrawal should be treated with caution.

Without independent sources, it is difficult to know what is going on. Both sides have a stronger incentive to mislead their adversary than to provide accurate information.

However, despite the heavy losses inflicted on Russian troops, Ukrainian commanders may be beginning to calculate that the cost of defending Bakhmut – in terms of blood and treasure – is now too high.

If that is the case, they may want what Western analysts refer to as a “a controlled fighting withdrawal” to protect the remaining Ukrainian forces so that they can be redeployed.

However, any withdrawal may be difficult and time-consuming.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said earlier this week that the situation in the region was becoming “more and more difficult,” despite the Ukrainian military saying it had repelled numerous attacks since Friday.

“I believe we shouldn’t give any inch of our land to the enemy,” Mr Marchenko said. “We should protect our land, we should protect our people and we should protect the businesses that are on this land.”

Mr Marchenko added that the city was “almost destroyed,” with bridges destroyed and communication cut off.

“They want to destroy Bakhmut, just like they did Mariupol and Popasna,” he said, referring to two cities in eastern Ukraine now under Russian control.

At the start of the invasion, the Russian military besieged the south-eastern port city of Mariupol and took control after three months of artillery bombardment that killed thousands.

Following a lengthy battle with Ukrainian forces, Russia claimed the Donbas town of Soledar, about 10 kilometres (6.2 miles) from Bakhmut, in January.

By the time the Ukrainian army retreated, Soledar had been reduced to a wasteland of flattened buildings and rubble.

On Friday, President Zelensky stressed that artillery and shells were needed to “stop Russia”.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the country’s latest package included high-precision Himars artillery rockets and howitzers “which Ukraine is using so effectively”.

Alex Murdaugh, a disgraced former lawyer, sentenced to life

Alex Murdaugh
  • A jury convicted the 54-year-old in less than three hours.
  • Authorities claimed he murdered his wife and son.
  • The disbarred attorney was convicted of two counts of murder after a six-week trial.

Alex Murdaugh, a disgraced ex-lawyer, was sentenced to life in prison for murdering his wife and children in a case that rocked the United States.

The hearing in South Carolina came one day after a jury convicted the 54-year-old in less than three hours.

On June 7, 2021, Murdaugh’s wife, Maggie, 52, and son Paul, 22, were shot at close range on their family estate.

Authorities claimed he murdered his wife and son to draw attention away from his financial misdeeds and elicit sympathy.

Judge Clifton Newman termed the case “one of the most troubling” he has encountered and underlined Murdaugh’s past “as a well-known member of the legal community”.

Capital Sentence

“You’ve practiced law before me, and we’ve seen each other on various occasions throughout the years,” he said, calling it “especially heart-breaking for me” to learn of Murdaugh’s arrest and prosecution, more than a year after the murders were committed.

Alex Murdaugh led a legal dynasty that had established a dominant position for decades – the jurisdiction was dubbed “Murdaugh Country” by some.

Judge Newman said he understood the state’s decision not to seek the capital sentence, but that Murdaugh’s family had individuals executed for less.

“Your family, including you, have been prosecuting people here in this courtroom, and many have received the death penalty, probably for lesser conduct,” he said.

The disbarred attorney was convicted of two counts of murder after a six-week trial.

An appeal

Throughout the trial, investigators showed how Murdaugh stole nearly $9 million from clients to fuel his opioid addiction and opulent lifestyle.

Murdaugh spoke briefly twice during Friday’s sentencing to assert his innocence. His attorneys said he would file an appeal against the life sentence within 10 days.

Buster Murdaugh, Murdaugh’s surviving son, sat quiet and mute throughout the proceedings, even as the judge sentenced his father to two consecutive life sentences.

The court also speculated that the murders might have been committed while under the influence of drugs.

“It might not have been you, but it may have been the monster you became when you took those pills.”

Lead prosecutor Creighton Waters said the evidence against the South Carolina lawyer was “overwhelming” and showed him to be a “cunning, manipulative man who placed himself above all others, including his family”.

Nonetheless, Murdaugh reiterated his argument that he was not guilty.

“I would never hurt my wife and I would never hurt my son,” he said in brief remarks at the hearing. He stared ahead and did not react as his sentence was read

Carolina Department of Corrections

A video made by Paul Murdaugh only minutes before he was shot contained his father’s voice in the background, contradicting his assertion that he was not present at the time.

A condemned juror told it was when he realized the defendant was guilty.

Murdaugh’s head has been shaved in a fresh mugshot provided by the South Carolina Department of Corrections (SCDC).

According to local media, male prisoners usually get a haircut when they arrive in prison.

According to the SCDC, he will spend the following 45 days in the intake process, when his medical and mental condition, as well as his educational level, will be assessed.

He will be transferred to a maximum-security prison after 45 days.

During a news conference following the sentence, Murdaugh’s lawyers stated that they did not believe it was a mistake for him to testify during the trial. They claimed Judge Newman’s decision to allow evidence linked to Murdaugh’s financial misdeeds to be included in the murder trial was “erroneous”.

The state’s case “was about character, not about motive”, defense attorney Dick Harpootlian said. Murdaugh had been cast as a “despicable human being”, he said.

The high-profile case has spurred true crime podcasts and documentaries across the country.

‘Extremely tense’ as Russians attempt to encircle Bakhmut, – Commander

Ukrainian
  • The thaw in early spring transforms battlefields into the mud.
  • Russian military marched north and south of Bakhmut.
  • Russian military marched north and south of Bakhmut.

The situation in the Ukrainian city of Bakhmut was “extremely tense” on Tuesday, according to the commander of Ukrainian ground forces, as Russian troops besieging it increased their assault in an attempt to encircle it.

Russia is attempting to disrupt Ukrainian defenders’ supply lines to the city, which has seen some of the bloodiest combat of the war, in order to force them to surrender or withdraw. This would be Russia’s first big victory in more than a month and pave the way for the conquest of the final remaining metropolitan centers in the Donetsk region.

“Despite significant losses, the enemy threw in the most prepared assault units of Wagner, who are trying to break through the defenses of our troops and surround the city,” Ukraine‘s Colonel general Oleksandr Syrskyi was quoted as saying on a military messaging platform.

Earlier, Ukraine’s military stated that Russia had increased its soldiers in the Bakhmut area and was shelling communities around the city.

” Over the past day, our soldiers repelled more than 60 enemy attacks,” the military said early Tuesday, referring to Bakhmut and other eastern territories, adding that Ukrainian forces repelled Russian attacks on the villages of Yadhidne and Berkhivka, on the northern approaches to Bakhmut.

Unpredictable

According to Ukrainian military researcher Oleh Zhdanov, Russian soldiers drove a wedge between those communities as they attempted to cut the road west to Chasiv Yar.

“The southern part of Bakhmut is the only area that can be described as under Ukrainian control. In all other districts, the situation is unpredictable,” he said in a video commentary, adding: “It is impossible to say where the front line lies.”

Ukrainian forces in the Donetsk region hunkered down in muddy trenches after milder weather thawed the frozen ground.

“Both sides stay in their positions because as you see, spring means mud. Thus, it is impossible to move forward,” said Mykola, 59, commander of a Ukrainian frontline rocket launcher battery, watching a tablet screen for coordinates to fire.

The rasputitsa, or spring thaw, has a history of thwarting army attacks across Ukraine and western Russia by converting highways into rivers and fields into quagmires.

Volodymyr, a 25-year-old platoon commander, claimed his soldiers were ready to operate in any weather in a zigzag trench.

“When we’re given a target that means we have to destroy it.”

Russia has increased its offensive throughout the eastern front, bolstered by hundreds of thousands of conscripts, but the cost has been tremendous, according to Ukraine and its supporters.

“Vicious battles are going on there. The command is doing everything it can to stop the enemy from advancing through our territory,” Serhiy Cherevatyi, a spokesperson for Ukraine’s eastern military command, told Ukrainian television.

Russia claimed to have damaged a Ukrainian ammo store in Bakhmut, as well as shot down US-made missiles and Ukrainian drones.

According to Russia’s defense ministry, the US is plotting a provocation in Ukraine using hazardous chemicals. There was no instant response from the United States.

Russia warns the West against threatening its troops in breakaway Moldovan province

Russia
  • Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine dismissed Moscow’s claim that Ukraine wanted to take over the region.
  • Russia warned the West, any measures threatening Russian peacekeepers in Moldova would be considered an attack on itself.
  • The warning comes amid growing fears of a Russian threat in Moldova.

Russia warned the West on Friday that any measures threatening Russian peacekeepers in Moldova’s breakaway Transdniestria region would be considered an attack on itself, only one day after accusing Ukraine of planning an invasion.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine dismissed Moscow’s claim that Ukraine wanted to take over the region, while Moldova repeated that the charges were false.

The warning comes amid growing fears of a Russian threat in Moldova, a small ex-Soviet republic bordering Ukraine. Its pro-European President Maia Sandu accused Moscow of staging a coup earlier this month.

Russia accused Kyiv on Thursday of plotting an invasion of Transdniestria, which borders Ukraine. The primarily Russian-speaking territory seceded from Moldova in 1990, a year before the Soviet Union collapsed.

“We warn the United States, NATO member states, and their Ukrainian wards against taking yet another reckless step,” Russia’s foreign ministry.

“Any action that threatens their security will be considered under international law as an attack on the Russian Federation.”

There are approximately 1,700 Russian troops in Transdniestria, which has a population of approximately 440,000 people.

Moldovan Foreign Minister Nicu Popescu said Russia’s “provocative” remarks regarding a potential Ukrainian strike were false.

“The Moldovan authorities have rejected these statements as unfounded, made to manipulate public opinion. The security situation in the region is stable,” he wrote on the Telegram messaging app on Friday.

Russia, Zelenskyy said at a press conference, was constantly provocative.

“They clearly understand that we respect the territorial integrity of Moldova and we believe the territory of Transdniestria is the territory of the independent state of Moldova,” he said.

Last week, Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine was not the only country on Moscow’s radar and that the Kremlin was considering measures to “strangle” Moldova.

A defiant Andean bear escapes from a US zoo twice

Andean bear
  • Andean bear got out again on Thursday afternoon.
  • These bears are only found in South America.
  • Ben returned to the zoo after 50 minutes of freedom.

The Saint Louis Zoo’s new security measures in this Andean bear‘s habitat were no match for his daring personality.

Ben, the four-year-old bear who escaped his enclosure earlier this month on February 7, got out again on Thursday afternoon.

Andean bears are only found in South America, however, they are endangered owing to habitat loss and hunting.

Ben has returned to the zoo after 50 minutes of freedom.

The zoo claims he tampered with the steel mesh of his outside home, “causing a cable to give way, which subsequently allowed him to work his way out” during his previous escape.

In response, zoo staff “made the habitat even more secure by adding stainless steel cargo clips rated at 450 pounds tensile strength”, but of course, that still “wasn’t enough for Ben”.

The Zoo Animal Emergency Response methodology was implemented after they found Ben had once again escaped, and he was secured in just under an hour from “start to finish”.

It was quicker than Ben’s capture on February 7th, which took nearly an hour and a half.

The zoo says they know Ben is “young and adventurous” and will continue to “investigate other alternative ways to secure the habitat”, they said in a statement

Indian truckers say Hindenburg report is godsend in Adani dispute

Hindenburg
  • India’s Adani reopens two cement plants after a freight dispute.
  • Truckers believe the Hindenburg report was the answer to their prayers.
  • Adani says an amicable resolution was reached after negotiations.

A U.S. short-negative seller’s research report on Adani‘s facilities in a hilly north Indian state was a godsend for truckers delivering cement from Adani’s mills, who believe it helped them salvage their livelihoods.

For weeks, about 7,000 truck owners and drivers in India’s Himachal Pradesh staged protest demonstrations in response to Adani’s Dec. 15 decision to close two cement factories due to a freight rate disagreement. Adani said the facilities would be “unviable” if trucking prices were cut by half.

On Monday, the Gautam Adani-led group announced that it had “amicably addressed” the problem with a 10-12% tariff decrease. Truckers celebrated, with a union official declaring victory in a street address following late-night discussions with Adani.

The agreement came four weeks after Hindenburg Research, based in the United States, accused Adani of stock manipulation and improper use of tax havens, which the group dismissed.

The Jan. 24 news provoked a $140 billion drop in the group’s price, prompted regulatory inquiries, and saw billionaire Adani fall to 26th on Forbes’ global rich list, down from third.

While the truckers’ settlement may have only a minor influence on Adani’s overall empire, it was a significant victory for the drivers and owners in a state where most people live on less than $7 per day.

The report ” played a crucial part in our battle against India’s biggest business group, helped mobilize truckers, and gain political support,” according to Ram Krishan Sharma, one of the protesting truckers’ lead negotiators.

Seattle is the first city in the United States to outlaw caste discrimination

Seattle
  • Proponents of the prohibition argue that it is necessary to prevent caste bias from becoming more common.
  • In India, the caste system has been in place for almost 3,000 years.
  • It is faced by South Asian American and other immigrant working people in their workplaces.

Seattle: Following a decision by the city council, Seattle has become the first city in the United States to outlaw caste discrimination.

Councilwoman Kshama Sawant, who drafted the law, said the struggle against caste bias “is deeply connected to the fight against all forms of oppression”.

Proponents of the prohibition argue that it is necessary to prevent caste bias from becoming more common in the United States.

In India, the caste system has been in place for almost 3,000 years and separates Hindu society into rigid hierarchical groupings.

The Seattle legislation voted on Tuesday follows similar bans on caste bias that have been implemented on US university campuses in recent years.

“Caste discrimination doesn’t only take place in other countries,” said Ms. Sawant, who is the only Indian American on the Seattle city council.

Caste discrimination in working place

“It is faced by South Asian American and other immigrant working people in their workplaces, including in the tech sector, in Seattle and in cities around the country.”

Ms. Sawant, a socialist, has previously spoken of her upbringing in an upper-caste Hindu Brahmin family in India, where she witnessed similar discrimination.

Some Hindu American organizations have argued that a ban is unnecessary because US law already outlaws such discrimination.

In an open letter, the Washington DC-based Hindu American Federation argued that while the ordinance’s intentions were admirable, it “unfairly singles out and targets an entire population on the basis of their national origin and lineage for differential treatment”.

They stated that Indian Americans made up fewer than 2% of the population in Washington state and that there was a minimal indication of widespread caste discrimination.

Caste discrimination has been illegal in India since 1948, yet, discrimination remains, especially among the Dalits, who were originally dubbed “untouchables”.

According to the Migration Policy Institute think tank, the US is the second most popular destination for Indians living abroad.

TSA concerned about upsurge in firearms at American airports

American
  • A man carrying An assault rifle and 163 rounds of ammunition was caught.
  • More passengers are attempting to bring firearms through airport security.
  • TSA intercepted a record 6,542 weapons at airport checkpoints across the United States.

An assault rifle and 163 rounds of ammunition taken from a man about to board a plane in New Orleans on Valentine’s Day is an example of a trend identified by US officials.

More passengers are attempting to bring firearms through airport security in some parts of the country.

According to the TSA, while 2022 was a record year for guns discovered at US airport screenings, 2023 may possibly surpass it.

Police in Seattle, Washington, D.C., and Indianapolis have all issued a warning.

Last year, the TSA intercepted a record 6,542 weapons at airport checkpoints across the United States. Around 88% of them were armed.

Travelers are allowed to pack unloaded firearms inside checked luggage that typically goes into an aircraft’s hold. They are also required to tell the airline they intend to travel with weapons at check-in.

Yet, even if a person obtains a concealed weapon permit, weapons are not permitted in carry-on luggage or passenger cabins.

The TSA intercepts weapons at airport security checkpoints and reports that some airports are experiencing an increase in numbers that is ahead of comparable levels from last year.

The 14 February discovery in New Orleans was remarkable because of the quantity of ammo seized; it was the second gun captured at the city’s airport that day.

Single week, three weapons

In a single week in January, three weapons passed through a TSA screening at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. In one week, four different loaded firearms were discovered at Indianapolis International Airport.

“It’s disturbing that so many Indianapolis passengers have made the irresponsible decision to bring a firearm to the checkpoint in just the first month of the year,” says Aaron Batt, TSA’s Federal Security Director for Indiana.

TSA authorities in Seattle reported 11 weapons discovered before the end of January, up from seven discovered by the same period in 2022.

“This is not a new issue,” says Brian Schihabel, TSA Federal Security Director for Nebraska. “But, it is one that must be addressed because the number of firearms passing through our security checkpoints has reached an alarming level.” He believes that the increasing numbers will serve as a wake-up signal to individuals who choose to travel with firearms.

The TSA increased the maximum civil penalty for a firearms violation to $14,950 (£12,419) last year. Violators may also be arrested, have their guns confiscated, and have their TSA PreCheck privileges canceled for at least five years.

Yet numbers continue to go up. The TSA has intercepted more firearms every year since 2010 except for 2020 when the pandemic slowed travel worldwide.

Experts suspect part of the problem may be simple to explain.

“What we see in our checkpoints really reflects what we’re seeing in society,” TSA administrator David Pekoske told the Associated Press. “In society, there are more people carrying firearms nowadays.”
