Srinagar: New digital ID in IIOK raises concerns over surveillance

Srinagar
  • An eight-digit code will be assigned to each household.
  • This is yet another surveillance tactic to tighten the iron grip on IIOK’s residents’ lives.
  • Residents are vulnerable to increased surveillance and exclusion due to increased data collection.

Srinagar: Mehak, a university student in the northern Indian city of Srinagar, is accustomed to frequent identification checks by security forces and officials, and always carries two forms of identification. She may soon need to carry another in her purse.

Many residents, including Mehak, are confused and irritated by plans for a new family ID in the Indian illegal occupation of Kashmir, while rights activists fear the program will lead to increased surveillance and data hacking in the disputed Himalayan region.

“Families already use ID cards to gain access to social welfare programs. “So, why is this necessary?” asked Mehak, 22, who requested that her last name be withheld.

According to regional officials, the JK Family ID, an eight-digit code assigned to each household, will improve access to social welfare benefits such as subsidized food grains.

According to Prerna Puri, a commissioner in Kashmir’s information technology department, this means that families will no longer have to apply for benefits under various schemes because eligibility decisions will be automated based on data.

As part of the Digital India program aimed at better governance, the government is undertaking a massive digitization push across India, including health records, property titles, railway bookings, and utility payments.

Some in the Indian illegal occupation of Kashmir believe the new family IDs are part of a campaign to increase control over residents.

In order to tighten its grip on the Muslim-majority region, the Indian government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi revoked IIOJK’s autonomous status in 2019 and divided the former state into two federal territories.

Residents of Kashmir are right to be suspicious of the government’s motives, according to Angad Singh Khalsa, an independent human rights campaigner, because they have previously been singled out for increased surveillance on the grounds of national security.

Trust deficit

From 2020, everyone in IIOJK will be required to apply for domicile certificates, which will allow them to vote in local elections, buy farmland and houses, and apply to public universities and jobs.

Many residents, particularly Muslims, have refused to sign up for these certificates, unsure of the motives of the ruling Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party.

People are even warier with the new family IDs.

“Creating a unique family ID’ for J&K residents after 2019 is emblematic of the widening trust deficit,” Mehbooba Mufti, an opposition leader, and the former IIOJK chief minister said in a tweet.

“Kashmiris are held in high regard, and this is yet another surveillance tactic to tighten the iron grip on their lives.”

Digital exclusion

Security researchers and journalists have also reported multiple vulnerabilities and data leaks associated with the programme, though officials have downplayed the reports and stated that biometric data is secure.

Residents are vulnerable to increased surveillance and exclusion due to increased data collection for the JK Family ID and the lack of a federal data protection law, according to Anushka Jain, policy counsel at the Internet Freedom Foundation, a digital rights group in Delhi.

Parliament has yet to pass a new draught of a long-delayed data protection law.

“Any data collection exercise has the potential to cause harm. “Especially when there are no safeguards in place and we have no idea how the data will be used, stored, or accessed,” Jain explained.

“Even with individual Aadhaar IDs, there is so much exclusion. With family IDs, if there are errors in the data or if one member is caught up in something, then the entire family can be excluded, so the potential for harm is much greater.”

Authorities in IIOJK have stated that they will collect data with the consent of beneficiaries and will follow all applicable data protection laws. Officials have also stated that the cybersecurity framework will be strengthened.

Kashmir’s family ID is similar to Haryana’s digital IDs, which were introduced in 2020 to allocate welfare benefits.

However, there are more pressing needs in a region that has lagged behind the rest of the country in terms of investments and economic growth for decades, according to Asrar Reeshi, a Srinagar resident.

“I don’t see how an eight-digit ID will help people when there are so many other issues to deal with, such as the economic crisis, a lack of hospitals, and an inadequate education system,” the 21-year-old student said.

Air India to appeal against DGCA’s decision of suspending commander’s license

Indian flight enroute London faces bomb threat, contacts ATC Karachi
  • Air India concluded its internal investigation.
  • The complainant approached the crew for assistance after allegedly being urinated on by a fellow passenger.
  • The ground staff did not challenge the crew’s assessment.

New Delhi: Air India said on Tuesday that, given the mitigating circumstances and financial loss incurred by the crew during their period of de-rostering as a result of the peeing case, it considers the Commander’s license suspension “excessive” and will assist him in filing an appeal.

On November 26, 2022, Air India concluded its internal investigation into the actions of its crew operating and administrative staff supporting AI102.

The airline stated that the complainant approached the crew for assistance after allegedly being urinated on by a fellow passenger.

“In the absence of any witnesses, the crew took the complainant’s allegation at face value and assisted her by providing fresh clothes, helping clean her belongings, and relocating her to another business class seat of the same type as her original one,” said the airline.

According to Air India, the alleged perpetrator posed no risk to flight safety at any time in the crew’s opinion. “When awoken and confronted with the allegation, the alleged perpetrator was calm, cooperative, and claimed ignorance of the allegation. He had not been served excessive amounts of alcohol by the crew and did not appear to be intoxicated to them. The cabin crew kept the Commander informed on a regular basis. The alleged perpetrator, in the opinion of the crew, posed no risk to flight safety at any time,” it said.

Acknowledgment

Air India admitted that by taking the complainant’s accusation at face value and immediately providing assistance, the matter should have been reported as a prima facie case of a passenger “behaving in a disorderly manner toward other passengers” and thus meeting the description of unruly behavior at paragraph 4.9(d)(ii) of Civil Aviation Requirements, Section 3, Series M, Part VI (theACAR).

According to the airline, the incident should have been classified and reported as such, without prejudice to any subsequent investigation into the facts.

According to the airline, upon receiving the voyage report, ground staff did not challenge the crew’s assessment and, as a result, did not report the incident as an unruly incident.

“Based on the absence of witnesses to the alleged act, that the alleged perpetrator was peaceful, cooperative, and claiming ignorance of the event, that there was no risk to flight safety, and that a resolution had been witnessed between the parties, the crew made a judgment call to record the matter as a (non-reportable) inflight incident rather than a (reportable) case of unruliness. It should also be noted that, in the absence of witnesses to the alleged act, the crew was asked to make a presumption of the accused’s guilt, which violates natural justice and due process,” said Air India.

Indian court claim cow dung protects from radiation

Indian court
  • Cow dung is immune to atomic radiation.
  • Cows are revered as sacred creatures in much of India.
  • Hindu nationalist campaign against cattle slaughters with government backing.

AHMEDABAD: An Indian court has ruled that houses made of cow dung are immune to atomic radiation such as nuclear blast fallout.

Cows are revered as sacred creatures in much of India, and authorities, in collaboration with Hindu nationalist groups, have cracked down hard on cattle slaughter in recent years.

The court in western Gujarat was hearing the case of a Muslim man accused of smuggling a herd to slaughter them, which is against state law.

Samir Vinodchandra Vyas, the presiding judge, called the 22-year-actions old’s “very disappointing” and sentenced him to life in prison after concluding that cow slaughter was the source of numerous global problems.

“Every problem in the world will be solved on the day that not a single drop of cow’s blood falls on the ground,” said a copy of his ruling, issued in late November but only recently published.

“Science has proven that even atomic radiation cannot affect houses made of cow dung. Many incurable diseases can be cured by drinking cow urine.”

Hindu nationalist groups in India are outspoken supporters of cow protection, campaigning against cattle slaughter with government backing and, on occasion, deadly consequences.

In recent years, “cow vigilantes” have driven Muslim-owned abattoirs out of business and lynched people accused of cattle slaughter.

However, bovine-centric religious policies have had unintended consequences, with stray cows that are no longer able to give milk or help plow fields becoming a common sight in villages and even on busy city streets.

Top Indian university bans screening of BBC series on PM Modi

BBC
  • BBC documentary is based on Narendra Modi’s role during the deadly 2002 sectarian riots.
  • Students at New Delhi’s prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru University planned to screen the documentary.
  • A memo from the university’s registrar was issued late Monday ordering students to cancel the event.

A top Indian university has banned the screening of a BBC documentary about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s role during the deadly 2002 sectarian riots after his government attempted to block its spread online.

According to the broadcaster’s program, Hindu nationalist Modi, who was the premier of Gujarat state at the time, ordered police to turn a blind eye to an outbreak of violence that killed at least 1,000 people, the majority of whom were minority Muslims.

Students at New Delhi’s prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru University planned to screen the documentary on Tuesday, defying Indian authorities’ efforts to limit its screening.

However, a memo from the university’s registrar was issued late Monday ordering students to cancel the event and threatening “strict disciplinary action” if the edict was disobeyed.

“Such unauthorized activity may disrupt the peace and harmony of the university campus,” the statement said.

For years, free-speech activists and opposition leaders have accused Modi’s government of stifling dissent.

It used emergency powers under India’s contentious information technology laws on Saturday to prevent the documentary from being shared on social media.

Kanchan Gupta, a government adviser, slammed the series as “hostile propaganda and anti-India garbage” disguised as a documentary.

Order social media platforms to block links

The order issued by India to social media platforms to block links to the documentary “blatantly contradicts the country’s stated commitment to democratic ideals,” said Beh Lih Yi of the Committee to Protect Journalists in a statement on Monday.

The Gujarat riots began in 2002 after 59 Hindu pilgrims were killed in a train fire. Thirty-one Muslims were found guilty of criminal conspiracy and murder in connection with that incident.

According to a previously classified British foreign ministry report citing unnamed sources, Modi met with senior police officers and “ordered them not to intervene” in the subsequent attacks on Muslims.

It also said the violence was “politically motivated” and the aim “was to purge Muslims from Hindu areas”.

The riots would not have been possible “without the climate of impunity created by the state government. Narendra Modi is directly responsible,” the report concluded.

Modi ruled Gujarat from 2001 until his election as Prime Minister in 2014, and he was briefly barred from entering the country due to the violence.

An investigation team appointed by the Indian Supreme Court to look into Modi’s and others’ roles in the violence concluded in 2012 that there was insufficient evidence to charge him.

Massive earthquake hits Nepal killing one, tremors felt in India

earthquake
  • The magnitude of the earthquake was 5.9.
  • Cattle and farm animals were also buried by the earthquake.
  • Nepal experiences earthquakes frequently.

At least one person has been killed and two others injured after an earthquake struck western Nepal, with authorities still searching for damage.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the 5.6-magnitude earthquake’s epicenter was in the hilly and isolated Bajura district, 400 kilometers (250 miles) west of Kathmandu.

The tremors were felt as far away as India’s capital New Delhi, where buildings briefly shook, at around 2:43 pm local time (08:58 GMT) on Tuesday.

“There was a significant tremor. There were a lot of people on the streets. “There was a terror for a while,” said Nain Rawal, a district official in Bajura.

According to district chief Pushkar Khadka, one woman was killed, two people were injured, and up to 40 houses were damaged.

“It’s challenging to obtain complete information because of how remote our region is. By tomorrow, we hope to have a complete picture of the losses and damages, Khadka said, adding that most of the mud- and stone-built homes in the affected villages were either completely destroyed or developed cracks.

Since many of the villages in the district are walkable, details were still hazy, but soldiers and police rescuers had already been sent, according to Khaki.

According to Deb Bahadur Rokaya, a village official from Gaumul, the deceased woman had climbed a hill to gather fodder when she was killed by a stone that fell after becoming loose due to the tremors.

Cattle and farm animals were also buried by the earthquake.

The magnitude of the earthquake was 5.9, according to Nepal’s National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Center.

Indian users of social media reported experiencing strong tremors that rattled ceiling fans and other fixtures.

Nepal, which has the majority of the world’s highest peaks and is largely covered in mountains, experiences earthquakes frequently.

Another earthquake of magnitude 5.6 that struck Nepal’s western district of Doti in November claimed the lives of six people.

A magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck the nation in April 2015 claimed the lives of nearly 9,000 people and destroyed more than 500,000 homes.

Egypt’s Sisi travels to India as part of an investment push

Sisi
  • President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi arrives in India on Wednesday.
  • He will meet business leaders.
  • Trip will include discussions on strengthening economic relations between the two countries.

Cairo: Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi arrives in India on Wednesday, where he will meet business leaders and be a guest of honor at India’s Republic Day on January 26.

The trip will include discussions on strengthening economic relations between the two countries and reviewing opportunities for Indian investment in Egypt, a statement from the Egyptian presidency said.

Egypt is trying to drum up foreign investment as it tries to manage a dollar shortage that has led to a sharp depreciation of the Egyptian pound.

After the economic fallout from Ukraine’s war exacerbated its underlying problems, it sought assistance from energy-rich Gulf allies and the International Monetary Fund last year.

Cairo has also sought to expand its political and economic ties beyond its traditional alliances with the US and European powers, including in Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia.

US relations with Pakistan, India “stand on their own”, State Dept

India
  • Washington doesn’t see its ties with Pakistan and India as zero-sum.
  • The pace, scope, and character of any dialogue between India and Pakistan are up to them.
  • Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s offer to improve relations with New Delhi.

US State Department has said that Washington doesn’t see its ties with Pakistan and India as “zero-sum” despite the two countries being strategic rivals as well as key players in the regional politics in South Asia.

Even though the US wants regional stability, its relationships with Pakistan and India “stand on their own,” according to State Department Spokesperson Ned Price, during a press briefing on Monday in response to a question about Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s offer to improve relations with New Delhi.

On January 17, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif requested that his Indian counterpart, Narendra Modi, hold serious and sincere talks in order to resolve outstanding issues, including Kashmir.

“We’ve long called for regional stability in South Asia. That’s certainly what we want to see. We want to see it advanced. When it comes to our partnership – our partnerships with India and Pakistan, these are relationships that stand on their own. We do not see these relationships as zero-sum,” said Price.

Dialogue between India and Pakistan

The pace, scope, and character of any dialogue between India and Pakistan, according to the spokesperson, are up to those two countries.

When asked if Washington is sending someone to Pakistan for a long-term solution to the collapse of the power grids, Price said the US has “assisted Pakistani partners across any number of challenges and is prepared to do so in this case if there is something that we’re able to provide”.

However, he stated that he is unaware of any specific requests.

He was also asked if the US would open the door to talks with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan and his party if he is elected prime minister, given his stance that his ouster was the result of a “US conspiracy” last April.

In response, the spokesperson stated that Washington is open to working with any elected government in Pakistan.

“Pakistan is a partner of ours; we share a number of interests. We have demonstrated our desire to see constructive relations with Pakistan over the course of successive governments. As we have said in different contexts, we judge governments by the policies they pursue. It would ultimately be a question of the type of policy that any future government of Pakistan might pursue.”

Sustainable growth via IMF reforms

Meanwhile, according to The News, US Ambassador Donald Blome stated that Pakistan requires sustainable growth based on IMF reforms because the global lender operates within a strict policy framework.

He said this while speaking to members of the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), and added that the IMF and World Bank reforms will put Pakistan on a sustainable growth path.

Blome stated that the United States is looking for ways to relieve economic pressure on Pakistan. “In 2022, our bilateral trade reached $9.9 billion, with Pakistan exporting goods worth $6.8 billion.”

He stated that the US Commerce Department is looking for ways to assist Pakistan and that the country needs to transition away from imported fossil fuels and toward indigenous fuels.

“Pakistan has a lot of potential in this area. “The United States is assisting the country in realizing its potential through consultancy and investment,” he added.

Climate change, according to the US envoy, has had a negative impact on Pakistan, and a few weeks after the devastation caused by floods, numerous US officials visited the country’s affected areas.

“The US since then has committed $200 million for relief efforts and is trying to assist Pakistan in overcoming the climate impact through a planning mechanism to respond to floods. This includes putting together a resilient infrastructure,” he said.

Blome stated that the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Pakistan is a lengthy process that will take time, and that there is a backlog after the COVID-19 that is being cleared, and that things will return to normal in a few months.

He stated that Pakistan has a huge untapped tourism potential and that the US is assisting the country in preserving its cultural heritage, which attracts tourists.

Six injured in IIOJK blasts before India opposition leader Gandhi arrives

IIOJK
  • At least six people were injured in two blasts in Indian illegally-occupied Jammu.
  • The arrival of Indian opposition leader Rahul Gandhi was ahead.
  • The blasts occurred in Jammu’s transport yard in the Narwal area.

At least six people were injured in two blasts in IIOJK on Saturday, ahead of the arrival of Indian opposition leader Rahul Gandhi on a cross-country march, police said.

The blasts occurred in India illegally occupied Jammu’s transport yard in the Narwal area, according to regional police chief Mukesh Singh, as security has been increased ahead of Gandhi’s march, which is expected to arrive in the city on Monday.

Thousands have joined his march against “hate and division,” which aims to turn around the fortunes of the leftist Congress party after it was thrashed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party in the 2019 election.

Modi wishes to seize control of the Muslim-majority Himalayan region of IIOJK, which is hotly contested by Muslim-majority Pakistan. It has been ruled almost entirely by Muslim prime ministers.

Gandhi’s march, which has been better received by the public than expected, is expected to culminate in Srinagar later this month.

The first blast occurred around 0445 GMT, followed by another explosion, said another police official, who asked not to be named because he is not authorized to speak to the media.

“The whole area has been cordoned off and a search operation is underway,” he said.

Jaswinder Singh, who saw the first blast, said it occurred in a vehicle that was sent to a workshop for repairs.

“There was a big bang and when I came out, I saw a blast had ripped apart a car. Another explosion occurred nearby fifteen minutes later. “The majority of those injured are car mechanics,” he said.

India: Air India fined for passenger’s mid-flight urination

Air India
  •  Air India is fined $37,000 for not handling incidents professionally.
  • The man allegedly relieved himself on the 72-year-old woman.
  • The man was allowed to disembark as usual, and no immediate action was taken.

NEW DELHI: Indian media reported that Air India was fined $ 37,000 for its handling of an incident in which a drunk senior US bank executive was accused of urinating on a female passenger.

On a November 26 flight from New York to New Delhi, the man allegedly relieved himself on the 72-year-old woman seated in business class, an incident dubbed “peegate” by the media.

According to reports on Friday and Saturday, the Indian Directorate General of Civil Aviation fined Air India’s director of in-flight services 300,000 rupees in addition to the carrier’s penalty of three million rupees ($37,000).

The pilot’s license was also suspended for three months for “failing to discharge his duties.”

The banker, Indian national Shankar Mishra, was allowed to disembark as usual. No immediate action was taken.

After the story was widely publicized in Indian media, police arrested Mishra.

US bank Wells Fargo fired him from his job as vice president of its Indian operations after the “deeply disturbing” allegations.

Air India was heavily chastised for how it handled the woman’s complaint.  The airline’s CEO was forced to issue an apology.

“Air India acknowledges that it could have handled these matters better, both in the air and on the ground, and is committed to taking action,” chief executive Campbell Wilson said.

The case is the latest embarrassing incident to be reported in India’s booming airline sector in recent months.

Indian government allegedly forced Twitter and YouTube to remove BBC documentary about Modi

Indian government
  • India directed Twitter to delete over 50 tweets about the documentary.
  • “India: The Modi Question” have been removed from both platforms.
  • British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak doesn’t agree with the characterization.

According to local Indian media, the Indian government has allegedly forced Twitter and YouTube to remove links to a BBC documentary about the 2002 Gujarat riots and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Several tweets and YouTube videos from the documentary “India: The Modi Question” have been removed from both platforms.

According to sources, the Information and Broadcasting Ministry instructed the two social media moguls to block the first episode of the BBC documentary a day after British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak distanced himself from the series, declaring that he “doesn’t agree with the characterization” of his Indian counterpart in the UK’s parliament by Pakistan-origin MP Imran Hussain.

According to sources, India directed Twitter to delete over 50 tweets about the documentary.

Derek O’Brien, a Trinamool Congress MP, was among those whose tweets about the documentary were deleted by Twitter.

“Censorship. My tweet about the BBC documentary has been removed from Twitter. It was viewed by hundreds of thousands of people. The one-hour BBC documentary reveals how the Prime Minister despises minorities “According to O’Brien.

According to those familiar with the situation, the I&B Ministry used emergency powers granted by the Information Technology Rules, 2021, to compel the removal of the links, and both YouTube and Twitter agreed to comply.

Indian government has referred to the film as “propaganda”

India claimed that it lacks objectivity and has a colonial mentality.

According to sources, the federal government has also directed that any new links to the documentary be removed from Twitter and YouTube.

According to sources, after closely examining the documentary, officials from several ministries, including home and foreign as well as I&B, concluded that it was an attempt to undermine the Supreme Court’s authority and credibility, sow discord among Indian communities, and make unproven claims about foreign governments’ actions in India.

Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari once referred to Modi as the “butcher of Gujarat” in reference to the same riots that were the subject of a BBC documentary. He criticized India’s role in fostering terrorism in Pakistan and claimed that terrorist groups in the country are supported by the neighboring country.

An investigation ordered by the Supreme Court found no evidence of misconduct by PM Modi, who was the Chief Minister of Gujarat when the riots began in February 2002.

Netizens have spoken against censorship.

“Mirror mirror on the wall, who is insecure of all?” a user commented.

“Modi is the synonym of ‘Coward’,” said another.

“Why is the Modi government afraid of someone tweeting about a BBC documentary when the center has already stated that it is “propaganda”? People who question propaganda?” enquired another.

India: Olympic Association to investigate sexual harassment allegations against top wrestling official

Olympic Association
  • Sports minister Anurag Thakur announced the creation of an oversight committee to look into the allegations.
  • Several Indian wrestlers had written to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).
  • Indian Olympic Association (IOA) will form a seven-member panel to investigate Singh’s allegations.

The president of the Indian Wrestling Federation has been accused of sexual harassment, the country’s sports ministry announced on Friday (WFI).

After meeting with a number of prominent wrestlers who demanded an investigation, the sports minister Anurag Thakur announced the creation of an oversight committee to look into the allegations.

The WFI President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh should be fired, and the WFI should be dissolved, according to the wrestlers, who have been protesting for the past three days in the Indian capital of New Delhi.

All of the allegations have been denied by the WFI.

Olympic wrestler Vinesh Phogat and four others have stated that they are speaking on behalf of the accusers in order to protect their identities and have not publicly released details about the allegations made by the young wrestlers.

At a press conference with the wrestlers in the nation’s capital, New Delhi, Sports Minister Thakur stated that “serious allegations, be they charges of financial irregularities or charges of sexual harassment, will be probed.”

The minister continued, “Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh will step aside and cooperate with the investigation until the investigation is finished. The committee will observe all day-to-day operations during that time.

After a second round of talks between the minister and wrestlers, Hakur made his announcement.

Thakur stated that the committee has four weeks to complete the investigation.

He also stated that the names of the oversight committee members would be announced on Saturday.

India’s Olympic Association launches an investigation

Welcoming the announcement, Olympic wrestler Bajrang Punia, who attended the meeting, said, “The union sports minister listened to our demands and has assured us that a proper investigation will be done. I thank him, and we are hopeful that a fair investigation will be conducted, so we are canceling our protest.”

Meanwhile, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) will form a seven-member panel to investigate Singh’s allegations.

“We will ensure a thorough investigation to ensure justice,” IOA president PT Usha said in a tweet Friday, urging athletes to come forward and express their concerns.

Several Indian wrestlers had written to the IOA, demanding that an inquiry committee be formed to look into the allegations.

Five wrestlers claim “several young wrestlers” have raised serious complaints of “sexual harassment” against the WFI president in a letter addressed to the president of the IOA and shared on Twitter.

The WFI chief was supposed to hold a press conference on Friday, but he did not show up. “We’ve given our official statement to (the) sports ministry,” his son Pratik Bhushan Singh told reporters.

A press conference scheduled for Sunday has also been postponed “until further notice” by the WFI chief.

In their letter to the IOA, Phogat and her fellow wrestlers stated that “it has taken a lot of courage for the wrestlers to come together” and file their complaints against Singh, a member of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in the Indian Parliament.

“We are concerned for our lives,” they added.

Women wrestlers speak out

Phogat, the first female Indian wrestler to win gold at the Commonwealth and Asian Games, tweeted on Wednesday, “The players want self-respect,” adding that “if the federation does not support them, morale breaks down.”

“I am fighting alongside my teammates, she said.

Tirupati: Tirumala temple authorities have ordered an investigation into a drone video of the temple that has gone viral on social media platforms.

The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD), which oversees the affairs of the Sri Venkateswara temple atop Tirumala in Aidhi Pradesh, has taken note of the video posted by a Hyderabad resident.

TTD Chairman Y. S. Subba Reddy said on Saturday that if anyone was found using drones to shoot the video, a criminal case would be filed.

TTD officials have virtually ruled out the possibility of using the drone camera. They suspect that the video was shot with still photography. It is also possible that the video was obtained from Google.

A” Video of Tirumala temple which is making rounds on social media platforms as taken through a Drone camera is baseless. However, it will be sent to the forensic lab for verification,” said  Chief Vigilance and Security Officer (CVSO) Narasimha Kishore.

He claims that the entire Tirumala is under the watchful eye of high-tech vigilance and security.

The CVSO also threatened legal action against those who videotaped the Tirumala temple if found guilty.

Flying aircraft or drones over the hill shrine is prohibited by Agama Shastra rules.

The temple, the world’s richest Hindu shrine, reported an astonishing set of wealth in November last year, consisting of 10.3 tonnes of gold deposits in nationalized banks and a cash deposit of Rs15,938 crores ($1.94 billion). The total value of temple assets is estimated to be Rs2.26 lakh crore ($27.56 billion).

  • Police had identified the dead as Dharma based on the license plate number.
  • The case took a drastic turn when police attempted to track Dharma’s cell phone.

A Telangana government employee has been detained for reportedly faking his death by murdering his driver in order to collect insurance money.

A week after the body of Dharma, an Assistant Section Officer in the Telangana State Secretariat was discovered in a charred automobile in Medak district, the case took a dramatic turn when police discovered him alive.

Dharma was allegedly apprehended in Goa and was transported to Hyderabad.

On January 9, a car and a man’s burned body were discovered in a canyon outside Venkatapur hamlet in the district. Near the automobile, a bag and a container half-filled with gasoline were discovered.

The police had identified the dead as Dharma, 48, based on the license plate number of the automobile and identity card discovered in the luggage.

Police believed that the lack of guardrail on the embankment may have caused the car to fall into the gorge. Police opened a case of suspicious death and began an extensive investigation.

The inquiry into the case took a drastic turn when police attempted to track Dharma’s cell phone. The cops followed the object to Goa using mobile phone signals. Rushing to Goa, a police team discovered Dharma still alive. After being arrested, he was brought to Telangana.

To obtain insurance money, Dharma allegedly killed a car driver and then faked his demise. Due to his gambling, he had accrued debt, so he had the bright idea to use insurance proceeds to pay it off. His relatives had conspired with him.

Japan and India conduct the first combined fighter jet exercise

Japan
  • India and Japan conducted their first combined fighter aircraft exercise.
  • Around 150 Indian Air Force troops are participating in the drill.
  • The two countries agreed to the practice during meetings.

Tokyo: Japan and India conducted their first combined fighter aircraft exercise near Tokyo on Monday as the countries strengthen their defence and security ties.

The 11-day bilateral exercise will feature eight Japanese fighter airplanes and four Indian fighters, two transport planes, and an aerial refueling tanker, according to Japan’s defence ministry.

Around 150 Indian Air Force troops are participating in the drill at the Hyakuri Air Base in Ibaraki prefecture, northeast of Tokyo.

The two countries agreed to the practice during meetings between Japanese and Indian defense and foreign ministers in 2019, but it was postponed because of the pandemic.

Japan and India, along with Australia and the United States, form the “Quad” alliance, a grouping of regional nations concerned about China’s military and economic clout.

In recent months, Tokyo has undertaken a series of joint military drills, as well as revamping its defence and security strategy and clearly voicing its concerns about China.

In December, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s administration pledged to double defense spending to 2% of GDP by 2027, labeling China the “biggest strategic challenge ever” to Japan’s security.

Last week, Japan signed a new defence treaty with the United Kingdom and agreed to broaden its mutual defence treaty with the United States to include space-based threats.
