Train operation from Quetta resumes after 46-days

QUETTA: Train services from Quetta to other parts of the country have been restored after 46 days following the repair of the railway bridge in Bolan.

The Jaffar Express has left Quetta for Peshawar after a 46-day suspension. The Divisional Superintendent of Railways, Imran Hayat, said that train services were restored after one and half months, with the damaged bridge being rebuilt.

Talking to journalists, DS Quetta said the suspension of train service caused Rs 1.5 million loss to the Pakistan Railways.

He also informed that the Bolan Mail from Karachi is also scheduled to depart for Quetta today, with enhanced security measures in place.

Passengers expressed joy over the restoration of the service, noting that it is a relief after facing significant challenges during the disruption.

The train service was halted due to the destruction of the railway bridge at Dozan area by terrorists. The Pakistan Railways team repaired the damaged bridge in just one and a half month.

Authorities have assured that foolproof security arrangements have been put in place to ensure the safety of passengers.

On August 26, terrorists launched coordinated attacks on civilians and government properties across several districts in Balochistan.

Among the damaged infrastructure was a British-era bridge situated between the Kolpur and Dozan railway stations in Bolan.

ECC approves exports of surplus sugar

ISLAMABAD: The Economic Coordination Committee of Cabinet (ECC) has approved the export of 500,000 metric tonnes of surplus sugar.

A meeting of the ECC was held under the supervision of Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb in which the export of surplus sugar was approved. The statement said that the export was allowed due to surplus sugar reserves in the country.

The export is subject to an undertaking by Pakistan Sugar Mills Association that their mills will commence production by 21st of next month for the next crop year and export quota of any non-compliant mill will be revoked.

According to provincial statistics, existing stock of sugar stood at 2.054 million MT of sugar reserves were available in the country till September 30 while 5.454 million MT of sugar were consumed in the country in the last 10 months and 0.900 million MT of sugar are estimated to be consumed in October and November.

The committee made the export of sugar subject to the commencement of the crushing season on November 21 by the sugar mills. The sugar will be exported in 3 months and this facility can be withdrawn at any time if the price of sugar increases.

The ECC further directed that the Cabinet Committee on Monitoring Sugar Exports, already constituted vide Cabinet Division’s Notification dated 25th & 26th June, 2024 and 13th September, 2024, would continue to regularly monitor and update the Cabinet on demand, supply and price situation of sugar in the country, including in the case of export of 0.500 MMT of sugar as well.

The ECC also discussed and approved a summary submitted by the Ministry of Energy (Power Division) seeking a compensation package for the deceased Chinese employees of Port Qasim Electric Power Company (Private) Limited.

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government in a significant achievement has sold four Markhor trophy hunting permits for Rs 250 million.

According to the Wildlife Department of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the biggest bid of Rs 150 million was offered for Toshi-1 and Toshi-2 Markhor trophy hunting.

Similarly, one Markhor hunt in Kohistan region would fetch Rs 53.7 million while one Markhor hunt from Ghirat, Chitral would fetch Rs 52.8 million.

The department said that 80 percent of the revenue from the trophy hunting program would be distributed among the residents of the respective areas, while funds were also utilized for the welfare and development of the local community as well as the conservation of wildlife in the area.

PHC seeks federal Govt response on constitutional amendment

PESHAWAR: The Peshawar High Court(PHC) has issued a notice to the federal government regarding a petition filed against the Constitutional Amendment, seeking a response.

The Peshawar High Court, issuing a three-page written order, said that a larger bench would hear the petitions filed against the constitutional amendments.

The case was heard by a two-member bench, comprising Chief Justice Ishtiaq Ibrahim and Justice Waqar Ahmad.

The court in its order said that there are constitutional questions in the petitions, constitutional interpretation is required, notices are issued to the federal government, attorney general and advocate general.

Peshawar High Court stated that according to the petitioner, the federal government is going to amend the constitution and the people are the main stakeholders in the proposed constitutional amendments, but not including public opinion in the constitutional amendment is a violation of the constitution.

The order further stated that according to the petitioner, the draft in the 18th Amendment was made public.

Later, the court adjourned the next hearing of the case till October 15.

RAWALPINDI: Punjab Government has imposed Section 144 in Rawalpindi for 8 days, during which political gatherings, sit-ins, rallies and other activities will be banned in the city.

The provincial government imposed Section 144 in Rawalpindi for eight days, the purpose of the enforcement of the section is to secure the Shanghai Cooperation Organization(SCO) summit.

Political gatherings, sit-ins, rallies and other activities will be banned in Rawalpindi, while double-riding, aerial firing, pigeon flying, flying drones and use of laser lights are also banned within the city limits.

The decision to implement the section has been made at the request of the district administration and to maintain law and order and protect human lives and property, however, representatives of law enforcement agencies will be exempted from restrictions. The Section 41 has been implemented until October 17.

It should be noted that the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit(SCO) will be held in Islamabad on October 15th and 16th.
