India planned to rename Valentine’s Day “Cow Hug Day” Here’s how it backfired

India
  • Authorities wanted to rename this Valentine’s Day Cow Hug Day.
  • The move appears to have backfired and been abandoned.
  • It triggered a torrent of internet memes.

Cows have long been revered as a symbol of both the Earth and divinity by India‘s majority Hindu population.

Indeed, the animals are so revered that authorities wanted to rename this Valentine’s Day “Cow Hug Day,” expecting that the move would increase citizens’ “emotional richness” while also striking a blow to local traditions over what is perceived as a western cultural import.

However, the move appears to have backfired and been abandoned after it triggered a torrent of internet memes, cartoons, and jokes about the necessity of consent from TV hosts.

The declaration of February 14 as “Cow Hug Day,” had come in a statement Monday from the Animal Welfare Board of India, which called cows the “backbone of Indian culture and rural economy.”

The cow is “the giver of all, providing riches to humanity” due to its “nourishing nature,” said the agency, a statutory body that advises India’s Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying.

It stated that the movement to hug cows was part of an effort to promote “Vedic,” or sacred Hindu practices, which had been undermined by Western influence.

Vedic traditions

“Vedic traditions are almost on the verge of extinction due to the progress of (western) culture over time,” the statement said. “The dazzle of western civilization has made our physical culture and heritage almost forgotten.”

However, the plan appears to have been abandoned within a week of the announcement, following days of online scorn and contempt.

For days, media sources have mocked the government’s proposal, releasing satirical drawings of cows fleeing romantic men, while internet users have reveled in posting recordings of violent clashes between beast and man.

An anchor from one of India’s top English-language news networks was even seen on camera attempting to embrace numerous cows, who appeared to reject his attempts.

“Consent is important,” he joked during the segment.

According to Iran’s national news agency, Raisi will depart for Beijing on Monday evening in response to an official invitation from Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Both presidents first met last September in Uzbekistan at a Shanghai Cooperation Organization conference, where the Iranian president advocated for stronger ties.

On his upcoming trip, Raisi is expected to hold private talks with Xi, and delegations from both countries are due to sign “cooperation documents.”

Both countries signed in 2021 a 25-year “strategic cooperation pact” said to include “political, strategic and economic” components.

According to Iranian customs authorities’ 10-month figures, China is Iran’s largest trade partner.

Ukraine’s and the United States’ defence chiefs discuss “priorities” for allies’ meeting

  • Volodymyr Zelenskiy and other Kyiv authorities have been encouraging allies to provide fighter planes.
  • US and Ukraine Defense Secretary addressed “priorities” for upcoming meetings.
  • The Ukraine Defense Contact Group will meet at NATO headquarters on Tuesday.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov addressed “priorities” for upcoming meetings of Kyiv’s allies in Brussels, both parties announced late Saturday.

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and other Kyiv authorities have been encouraging allies to provide fighter planes after gaining a pledge of scores of contemporary battle tanks, including the US M1 Abrams, German Leopard 2, and British Challenger 2.

The Ukraine Defense Contact Group will meet at NATO headquarters on Tuesday, following a Jan. 20 session at the Ramstein Air Base in Germany that was critical in making the decision to send tanks.

According to Brigadier General Patrick Ryder, the Pentagon’s chief spokeswoman, Austin, and Reznikov stressed the significance of delivering promised capabilities as soon as possible.

After the call, Reznikov tweeted that “the United States is unwavering in its support of Ukraine,” adding that the two also discussed the situation on the front line.

EU envoy to Syria: ‘absolutely unfair’ to be accused of shirking earthquake aid

EU
  • EU member countries have raised more than 50 million euros to give aid and support rescue missions.
  • EU was encouraging member states to provide help and that sanctions “do not impede the delivery of humanitarian aid.”
  • European Union’s envoy said it was unfair to criticise the group for failing to provide adequate assistance.

The European Union’s envoy to Syria said early Sunday that it was unfair to criticise the group for failing to provide adequate assistance to Syrians in the aftermath of last week’s earthquake that destroyed significant portions of Syria and Turkey.

According to Dan Stoenescu, the EU and its member countries have raised more than 50 million euros to give aid and support rescue missions and first aid in areas of Syria.

“It is absolutely unfair to be accused of not providing aid when actually we have constantly been doing exactly that for over a decade and we are doing so much more even during the earthquake crisis,” Stoenescu said in written comments.

More than 3,500 people were killed in Syria’s earthquake, where a 12-year conflict had already killed hundreds of thousands and prompted millions to flee within and beyond the country’s borders.

Even before Monday’s 7.8 magnitude earthquake, the country has been divided between multiple competing zones of control, making assistance provision problematic.

The Syrian government, which is sanctioned by the West, has asked for UN assistance but has stressed that any assistance must be coordinated with Damascus and supplied from within Syria, not across the Turkish border into opposition territories.

Some analysts have accused Damascus of targeting loyalist areas with supplies. On Sunday, Syrian authorities did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

Sanctions do not impede the delivery of humanitarian aid

A 30-tonne convoy of humanitarian goods from Italy, comprising four ambulances and 13 pallets of medical equipment, arrived in Beirut on Saturday its route to Damascus, marking the first European earthquake relief shipment to Syria.

Stoenescu said the EU was encouraging member states to provide help and that sanctions “do not impede the delivery of humanitarian aid.”

But he said the EU had foreseen that humanitarian partners may request exemptions “for humanitarian purposes and is willing to clarify further these possibilities.”

“The more the sanctions narrative is perpetrated, the more honest actors that want to help are inhibited and afraid to get involved in the international humanitarian efforts,” he said.

The EU was seeking “sufficient safeguards” to ensure that help provided would reach vulnerable people, Stoenescu said, adding the Syrian government had a “record of aid diversion.”

“We call the authorities in Damascus not to politicize the humanitarian aid delivery, and to engage in good faith with all humanitarian partners and UN agencies to help people,” he said.

Fawad Chaudhry strongly criticizes ECP for not holding meeting

Fawad Chaudhry court
  • He said ECP should have held a meeting today for polls.
  • “Don’t make a joke of the Constitution and court orders.”
  • Earlier, ECP has summoned a special meeting on Monday.

ISLAMABAD: Former federal minister and senior leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Fawad Chaudhry strongly criticised the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for not holding a meeting on Punjab general elections despite court orders.

In his twitter message, former federal minister Fawad Chaudhry said, “Election Commission of Pakistan should have held a meeting today for Punjab polls, don’t make a joke of the Constitution and court orders.”

He further criticized the ECP, saying there was a general impression that since the electoral watchdog comprised of “Munshis” (clerks or personal assistants), it won’t hold provincial elections like it did in Islamabad.

“This fiddling with the Constitution will cost the country dearly,” warned the former information minister.

Senior leader of PTI told the ECP that the Constitution is the only agreed document, and if that is also “trampled, then the state of Pakistan will be in serious danger”.

“Enough is enough, our movement for the supremacy of the Constitution is ready. This movement will start with Jail Bharo [movement] and will continue till the restoration of the Constitution,” said Fawad Chaudhry.

Earlier, Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has summoned a special meeting on Monday to discuss the Lahore High Court’s (LHC) decision of holding elections in Punjab in 90 days.

Violence outside a British hotel for asylum seekers leads to 15 arrests

british
  • A demonstration by crowds outside a hotel sheltering asylum seekers turned violent.
  •  The violence resulted in injuries and the burning of a police van.
  • Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has declared combating illegal migration one of his government’s main goals.

On Saturday, British police said 15 individuals had been arrested, including a 13-year-old girl, after a demonstration by crowds outside a hotel sheltering asylum seekers turned violent, resulting in injuries and the burning of a police van.

Police said offenders launched projectiles, including lighted fireworks, at officers after an initially peaceful rally and counter-protest in Knowsley, near Liverpool, in north-west England, on Friday evening.

Some people had arrived armed with hammers and pyrotechnics in order to “cause as much trouble as they could,” she continued.

Rumors and misinformation had spread on social media prior to Friday’s violence, Kennedy said, following an incident on Feb. 6 in Knowsley in which a male made unwanted approaches toward a teenage girl.

“We know that individuals involved in the violent activities last night exploited this as an excuse to commit violence and frighten members of the public,” she said, adding that a probe into the teen’s death was underway.

As the number of migrants crossing the English Channel to enter the United Kingdom swells, the government has been using hotels across the country as temporary housing while it reviews their asylum applications.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has declared combating illegal migration one of his government’s main goals, and new legislation to handle the issue is in the works.

Migrants landing on tiny boats have become a big political issue, particularly in working-class districts of north and central England, where they are blamed for making it difficult for people to find jobs and putting a strain on public services.

Police said they would enforce a dispersal order surrounding the Suites Hotel for two days, adding that extra officers would conduct high-visibility enforcement to prevent further incidents.

Soha Ali Khan shares an adorable family portrait with fans

Soha Ali Khan
  • Saif is dressed in his customary white kurta.
  • Soha is dressed in a red top and a blue jacket.
  • Ibrahim is sporting a red T-shirt.

The ideal family portrait of the Pataudis was posted on Instagram by Soha Ali Khan. She is pictured with her entire family, with the exception of a few faces, at her brother Saif Ali Khan’s house in Mumbai. Along with their daughter Inaaya, mother Sharmila Tagore, sister-in-law Kareena Kapoor, and nephews Ibrahim, Taimur, and Jehangir Ali Khan, they also have their mother Sharmila Tagore.

They all appeared to be eating snacks at the dining room table when they made the decision to take a picture of the occasion. Saif is dressed in his customary white kurta, Soha is dressed in a red top and a blue jacket, and Ibrahim is sporting a red T-shirt. Kareena is dressed in a black top and white slacks. Taimur is being held close by grandma Sharmila as Jehangir is in the arms of Kareena.

Soha shared the picture with the description, “The pride (minus a few cubs).” Saba Ali Khan, Soha’s sister, wrote, “Loverlyyyy. Soon, bye. Fans of the performers’ family also left comments on the image. Many people were still in a state of shock about Ibrahim’s resemblance to his father Saif.

A post shared by Soha (@sakpataudi)

One person remarked, “Saif’s son looks more like Saif than Saif himself.” God bless the Pataudi family, someone wrote. Many even pointed out that Sara Ali Khan, Saif’s oldest child, and Soha’s husband Kunal Kemmu were missing from the picture.

However, someone made the remark, “Perhaps nobody is there. Why do individuals presume that every member of the family will be present? Sara is plainly absent, as are doubtless a large number of other family members. Everyone has a life of their own, a job, and other things to do. Not everyone attends every family gathering. People frequently ask where certain family members are when celebrities post images of their families, as if it were a personal issue.

Soon, Soha will appear alongside Nushrratt Bharuccha in Chhorii 2. Manoj Bajpayee and Suraj Sharma will be appearing in Gulmohar, according to Sharmila. On Saturday, the movie’s trailer was made public.

Prabhas and Kriti Sanon will star in Om Raut’s next Saif film Adipurush. Kareena is working on a number of projects, including the adaptation of Sujoy Ghosh’s The Devotion of Suspect X and Hansal Mehta’s upcoming film, in which she plays a UK police officer. Along with Tabu and Kriti Sanon, Kareena is a part of The Crew. Recently, Diljit Dosanjh also joined the movie.

Ukraine forces hold frontline in Donetsk, Kyiv’s top military commander says

Ukraine
  • Russia conducts 50 attacks each day in Donetsk.
  • Ukraine is still holding Bakhmut and is attempting to “stabilize” the frontline around the town.
  • Ukrainian forces have managed to maintain the position.

LVIV: Ukraine forces hold defense along the frontline in Donetsk, including the besieged town of Bakhmut, with the fiercest battles raging for the cities of Vuhledar and Maryinka, Kyiv’s top military commander said on Saturday.

According to Valeriy Zaluzhnyi, commander-in-chief of Ukraine’s Armed Forces, Russia conducts 50 attacks each day in Donetsk, a territory in Ukraine’s southeast that Moscow has been attempting to entirely seize.

“Fierce fighting continues in the area of Vuhledar and Maryinka,” Zaluzhnyi said in a Telegram message after a call with U.S. General Mark Milley.

“We reliably hold the defense. In some areas of the front, we have managed to regain previously lost positions and gained a foothold.”

Zaluzhnyi did not indicate the location of the gains. He stated that Ukraine is still holding Bakhmut and is attempting to “stabilize” the frontline around the town.

Heavy resistance from Ukraine

The head of Russia’s Wagner mercenary squad claimed on Saturday that his soldiers are experiencing heavy resistance from Ukrainian defenders around Bakhmut.

Britain reported on Friday that Russian forces were making progress north of Bakhmut but were having difficulty attacking Vuhledar, some 150 kilometers (93 miles) farther south.

It is impossible to independently establish either side’s control regions, as fighting along the frontline has decreased in recent months to what the Ukrainian defense ministry refers to as “crawling” attempts to progress slowly.

According to Ukraine’s military analyst Oleh Zhdanov, despite Russian pressure in Maryinka, a practically deserted and damaged tiny city that has been on the frontlines since the war began a year ago, Ukrainian forces have managed to maintain the position.

“Fighting is going on in the city center, but there have been no changes over the past 24 hours,” Zhdanov said in a social media video.

Yevgeny Prigozhin, the leader of Wagner, claimed it could take two years for Moscow to control the entire Donetsk and Luhansk areas of Ukraine. Last year, Moscow claimed both as “republics” of Russia, a move criticized by the majority of UN member states as unconstitutional.

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and other military officials have been on a diplomatic marathon in recent months trying to secure more Western weapons and fighter aircraft.

“The key to success on the battlefield is effective fire damage, which requires an appropriate amount of weapons and ammunition,” Zaluzhnyi said.

SHC orders PIA to ensure provision of drugs to retired staff

SHC orders
  • PIA employee filed contempt of court case.
  • Justice Mohammad Iqbal Kalhoro heard the case.
  • Court directed the competent authority to comply order.

KARACHI: Sindh High Court (SHC) has directed the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) competent authority to ensure provision of actual medicines as prescribed by the doctors to the retired employees of the national flag carrier and their families as per rules.

Court warned the PIA that in case of failure to comply with the order, proceedings shall be initiated against the delinquents in terms of the Article 204 of the Constitution without providing further opportunity on the subject issue.

The direction came on a contempt-of-court application filed by retired PIA employee Javed Iqbal against non-compliance with court directives with regard to provision of medicines to him as prescribed by specialist/general cadre doctors.

The applicant had submitted that alleged contemnors of the PIA had wilfully disobeyed the court directives and failed to ensure the provision of actual medicines to him as prescribed by the specialist/general cadre doctors as per the rules.

The SHC asked an assistant attorney general with regard to non-compliance with court directives. The law officer submitted that a senior medical officer of the PIA had contacted the applicant for providing medicines to him but he did not respond.

He assured the court that the petitioner shall be provided required medicines at any time.

The applicant, however, refuted the stance of the PIA and submitted that the court order had not been complied with in letter and spirit. He asked the high court to initiate contempt of court proceedings against the alleged contemnors.

A division bench of the SHC comprising Justice Mohammad Iqbal Kalhoro and Justice Adnan-ul-Karim Memon after hearing the counsel observed that since the competent authority of the PIA had already been directed to ensure the provision of actual medicines as prescribed by the specialist/general cadre doctors to the retired employees of PIA.

Court directed the competent authority of the PIA to comply with the directions contained in the order on October 12, 2021, in its letter and spirit, without fail.

The bench made it clear that in case of non-compliance, proceedings shall be initiated against the delinquents in terms of the Article 204 of the Constitution without providing further opportunity on the subject issue.

New Zealand prepares for impact of Cyclone Gabrielle

Cyclone
  • Cyclone Gabrielle is expected to encompass the upper half of the North Island.
  • Cyclone battered the country’s northern tip on Sunday.
  • Emergency conditions in Auckland after a flash flood.

WELLINGTON – As a cyclone battered the country’s northern tip on Sunday, New Zealand‘s prime minister cautioned citizens to hunker down and prepare an evacuation plan.

Cyclone Gabrielle is expected to encompass the upper half of the North Island over a 48-hour period beginning Sunday evening, two weeks after severe floods in the same region.

Auckland is still in an emergency condition after flash floods flooded the city on January 27, killing four people and displacing others.

Debris from that flood remains on the streets of the country’s largest city, which is now bracing for another round of heavy rain and strong winds.

Flooding, massive ocean swells, and severe winds, according to Prime Minister Chris Hipkins, should prepare everyone.

“Our main message to people across the country is to please take the severe weather warning seriously and to make sure you’re prepared,” he told journalists.

“Make sure you’ve got your grab-and-go kits, make sure you know where you need to go in the event you need to evacuate your homes.”

On Sunday morning, the MetService weather agency recorded wind gusts of up to 140 kilometers per hour (86 miles per hour) in northern New Zealand.

“This system poses a very high risk of extreme, impactful, and unprecedented weather over many regions of the North Island from Sunday to Tuesday,” the MetService said.

On Monday and Tuesday, the cyclone is expected to weaken significantly as it moves slowly south.

On Sunday, strong winds caused the closing of Auckland’s Harbour Bridge, and most flights into and out of Auckland Airport have already been canceled for Monday.

As it reached New Zealand, Gabrielle was downgraded from a tropical cyclone, which meant that wind gusts and rainfall would be slightly less strong.

The storm passed over Australia’s remote Norfolk Island on Saturday night, where there were reports of downed trees and power cuts but no significant damage.

Turkey-Syria quake deaths to top 50,000: UN relief chief

UN
  • According to officials and medics, 24,617 persons were killed in Turkey.
  • 3,574 were killed in Syria.
  • The toll may double or more as it’s tough to determine for now.

According to UN humanitarian head Martin Griffiths, the death toll from a huge earthquake in Turkey and Syria may “double or more” from its present level of 28,000 people.

Griffiths landed in Turkey’s southern city of Kahramanmaras on Saturday, the epicenter of the first 7.8-magnitude earthquake that rocked millions of people in the early hours of Monday.

On Saturday, he said of the death toll, “I think it’s tough to determine precisely because we need to dig under the rubble, but I’m sure it’ll double or more.”

“We haven’t even begun to count the deceased,” he said.

According to officials and medics, 24,617 persons were killed in Turkey and 3,574 were killed in Syria. The confirmed total is currently 28,191.

Despite frigid weather that has exacerbated the anguish of millions now in desperate need of assistance, tens of thousands of rescue personnel are scouring destroyed neighborhoods.

According to the UN, at least 870,000 people in Turkey and Syria require hot meals right now. In Syria alone, up to 5.3 million people may have been displaced.

The earthquake has touched over 26 million people, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), which launched a quick appeal for $42.8 million on Saturday to address acute health needs.

According to Turkey’s disaster agency, around 32,000 personnel from Turkish organizations are working on search-and-rescue activities. In addition, there are 8,294 international rescuers.

“Soon, the search and rescue people will make way for the humanitarian agencies whose job it is to look after the extraordinary numbers of those affected for the next months,” Griffiths said in a video posted to Twitter.
