UN committee criticizes Denmark for neglecting to investigate a ‘racist’ art exhibit

GENEVA – Denmark failed to take effective measures against racist hate speech than a decade ago when it abandoned an investigation into an art exhibition displaying “racial hate images,” according to a UN watchdog.

The United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) found in favor of a Swedish man who filed a complaint against Denmark’s failure to act on a 2014 art exhibit in which he and other people of color were humiliated in a way that may promote racial hatred.

“It does not suffice merely to declare acts of racial discrimination punishable on paper,” committee member Mehrdad Payandeh said in the statement.

“Criminal laws and other legal provisions prohibiting racial discrimination, including racist hate speech, must also be effectively implemented.”

Momodou Jallow, the former spokesman for the National Association of Afro-Swedes and the national coordinator for the European Network Against Racism in Sweden, filed the complaint in 2017.

He claimed that Danish police had dropped their investigation into a three-year-old exhibit at a private gallery in Copenhagen by Swedish street artist Dan Parks, who had already been jailed in Sweden for defamation and incitement to hatred.

Incitement to violence

Sponsored by the far-right Danish Individuals’ Party, the show contained an image of Jallow and two other black people hanging from a bridge, with the message “hang on, afrofobians,” while another depicted Jallow as a fugitive slave with the text “our negro slave has gotten away”.

Jallow filed a racial discrimination complaint against the musician and the organizers.

The Copenhagen state prosecutor initiated an investigation but later dropped it, citing national and European laws on free expression.

Jallow took his case to CERD after his appeal in Denmark was denied, claiming that the Danish judgment violated the convention.

The committee decided that the photos shown were racial hate speech expressions.

It recognized the importance of striking a balance between the right to free expression and the obligation to combat racist hate speech.

However, it stated that the representations and language, in this case, were especially problematic since they showed racial superiority and could instigate violence.

“Some of the pictures displayed specific anti-discrimination activists, with messages to humiliate them and tarnish their dignity, and that can incite racial hatred and violence,” Payandeh said.

The committee, whose findings and recommendations are non-binding but carry reputational weight, found that the Danish authorities had failed to respond to the issue in an adequate and proportionate manner.

Denmark should apologize to Jallow and provide “full reparation,” it stated.

KARACHI: Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) has always raised its voice for addressing malnutrition challenges of Pakistan.

In this regard PMA and Nutrition International (NI) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to work jointly to support each other in efforts and interventions improving health and nutrition status of the people of Pakistan, especially focusing on maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health and nutrition.

The MoU signing Ceremony was held at local hotel of Karachi. Dr. Abdul Ghafoor Shoro, Secretary General PMA Centre and Dr. Shabina Raza, Country Director, Nutrition International – Pakistan signed the MoU.

Senior officials of both organizations along with Ms. Zeina Sifri and Ms. Silvia Lin from Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation were also present on this occasion.

The primary purpose of this MoU is to mutually engage and leverage platforms and human & technical resources for advancing the cause of nutrition. Both organizations will make efforts to achieve the goals of this partnership through specific focus on the health and nutrition policies, strategies and regulatory frameworks of the Government of Pakistan.

This collaboration will focuses on promoting nutrition through awareness raising, sensitization and capacity building as envisaged and prioritized at national and provincial level evident through relevant policy/strategy documents.

The collaboration will advocate for greater political and social commitment for maternal newborn, child adolescent health & nutrition in Pakistan. It will conduct advocacy for nutrition agenda with the healthcare community, nutrition- sensitive sectors, the private sector and opinion leaders to build an enabling policy and implementation environment.

Health and nutrition related studies will also be conducted within program priorities and develop evidence-based recommendations for improving health system. National and sub-national events on different health and nutrition related topics for policy and decision makers, implementers and health practitioners and communities will also be organized.

US man to be executed over killing of mother, her three children

WASHINGTON – The Missouri state government plans to execute a man sentenced to death for the 2004 murder of his girlfriend and her three children, which he denies.

Leonard Taylor, 58, is slated to be executed by lethal injection at the Potosi State Penitentiary in the United States Midwest.

In 2008, he was condemned to death for the murders of Angela Rowe and her three children, ages 10, six, and five.

On December 3, 2004, they were discovered dead in their home, each with a bullet in the head. They had been dead for several days, according to the forensic doctors.

Taylor has always claimed that they were still alive on November 26, when he flew to California from his home in Jennings, Missouri.

Prosecutors said he confessed to his brother about the murders and made his pistol disappear in front of a witness during the trial, and jurors found him guilty.

He has made countless failed attempts to cleanse his identity since then.

Denied his clemency plea

Also on Monday, Missouri Governor Mike Parson denied his clemency plea.

“Taylor committed these atrocities, according to the evidence, and a jury found him guilty. Taylor’s convictions have been regularly upheld by courts “In a statement, the Republican governor said.

According to the Innocence Project, which works for justice and defends Taylor, the brother’s evidence was obtained under pressure and he later recanted.

His lawyers recently submitted the testimony of his daughter, who says that her father was in California with her at the time of the killings, but they were unable to reopen the case.

They filed a last appeal with the United States Supreme Court on Tuesday, which is anticipated to rule soon.

If he does not stay the execution, Taylor will be the fifth death row inmate executed since January 1 in the United States.

China spy balloon: US Navy has released photographs of debris

The US Navy released images of a possible Chinese spy balloon blown out of the sky on Saturday.

The US Fleet Forces Command shared many photographs on Facebook of the balloon’s debris being loaded into a boat.

According to the article, the sailors who recovered the debris on Sunday were members of the Navy’s elite explosives squad.

The item will now be analyzed to see whether or not it was surveillance equipment.

According to US officials, the balloon is around 200 feet (60 meters) tall, with the payload part equal in size to regional airliners and carrying hundreds, if not thousands, of pounds.

China has constantly stated that the “airship is for civilian use and entered the US due to force majeure – it was completely an accident”.

According to US authorities, the Pentagon attempted to organize a phone contact between Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and his Chinese counterpart after the balloon was shot down, but China refused.

“Lines between our militaries are particularly important in moments like this,” defense press secretary Brigadier General Patrick Ryder said in a statement. “Unfortunately, the PRC has declined our request.”

The discovery of the balloon set off a diplomatic crisis, with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken immediately calling off a weekend trip to China – the first such high-level US-China meeting there in years – over the “irresponsible act”.

A day after being shot down by a fighter jet, the balloon was recovered off the coast of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

The navy said the debris was dispersed across seven miles (11 kilometers) of the Atlantic Ocean, and two naval ships, including one equipped with a big crane for retrieval, were dispatched to the region. However, the photographs show that the mounds of balloon material may be dragged aboard by hand.

As part of the hunt, the US Navy has also deployed unmanned underwater vehicles.

According to experts, the balloon’s wreckage might give the US with important insight into Chinese aerial surveillance equipment and procedures, allowing them to better understand what the balloon was capable of and how it relayed data.

Efforts to recover the balloon’s equipment, on the other hand, have been hindered by the necessity to protect US troops from potentially hazardous objects such as explosives or battery components.

On Thursday, US defense officials declared that they were tracking the unusual object and would shoot it down once it was safely over the sea.

Footage shown on US television networks showed the balloon crashing into the sea after a tiny explosion.

The Pentagon announced on Friday that a second Chinese surveillance balloon had been sighted over Latin America, with reports of sightings across Costa Rica and Venezuela.

Colombia’s Air Force reports that an identifiable object, thought to be a balloon, was discovered above 55,000 feet in the country’s airspace on 3 February.

It claims it followed the object until it departed the airspace and that it posed no threat to national security.

Anil Kapoor, an actor who will next be seen in the official Hindi remake of The Night Manager, has talked about his 2013 television series 24. Anil claimed in a recent interview that many professionals in the field were afraid to produce a long-form show ten years ago. Additionally, he said that his peers had also warned him not to work on the American TV show.

A limited TV series didn’t thrill many people in India at the time, according to Anil. He said that there was no third season of the show, possibly because of financial constraints. The popular spy drama, which debuted in India on a TV station in 2013, was purchased by Anil. After appearing in the international version, he adapted 24 for Indian television. 24’s second season debuted in 2016.

“Even when I was doing 24 internationally, everyone said you are a big screen, mainstream actor, how can you move to television,” Anil said in an interview with news agency PTI. For me, the focus is always on the plot and character. Whatever would happen, I had to watch it (TV). It was an exciting environment, so I wanted to bring it back. I promised to deliver all the platforms (here) 24 quality films when I pitched 24, but only a few platforms were interested.

Anil added that waiting for the appropriate roles and avoiding being forced into clichéd roles is the “trickiest” job for an actor. “You move on to the following before they can box you. You’re prepared to flop, fall flat, and all that. Although I was taking the risk, I was aware that it may go badly. Additionally, there are situations when greed makes you worry that you might not get a job offer. But once you’re at home, unwinding with your loved ones, the ideal offer will present itself,” the actor continued.

The Night Manager by Anil is the same-named novel by John le Carre translated into Hindi. Hugh Laurie, Elizabeth Debicki, Olivia Colman, and Tom Hiddleston star in a British television series based on the book. Sandeep Modi is the writer and director of the Indian version. Hugh Laurie will stand down from a job that will be filled by Anil.

Additionally playing significant roles in The Night Manager are Aditya Roy Kapur, Shobita Dhulipala, Tillotama Shome, Saswata Chatterjee, and Ravi Behl. The debut is on February 17. Anil will also appear in the films Animal, starring Ranbir Kapoor, and Fighter, starring Hrithik Roshan and Deepika Padukone.

Recently, Raveena Tandon talked about how people criticizing celebrities for talking about or even not talking about existing concerns in the nation. She claimed that actors suffer in both situations. She also referred to Twitter as being polarized by groups on the left and right.

Raveen, a frequent social media user, was asked about how celebrities are criticized for remaining silent on topics during a podcast with ANI. “Damned if you speak, and damned if you don’t,” she retorted. For instance, Twitter, in my opinion, is totally divisive. Either the right or left wing is responsible. There is nothing you can do because they have completely seized control. Therefore, you are either a Naxalite or a Sangh. There is no longer a middle ground or a path that you can choose that is impartial; everything is either or. But, she said, “Yes, when it concerns my country and when I must speak up for my country, then I fight back.

Raveena continued by disclosing the types of remarks she receives on social media for expressing her opinions. She added, “I do get comments asking whether I’m acting or not. Why? Am I not an American citizen? Is it true that I do not have children who will make up this nation’s future? Am I a citizen of this country but not paying my taxes and dues? Do you think I don’t love this nation? What has made it so difficult for me to speak up when I want to about my country now that I’m an actress? Who are you to say that to me? If I don’t visit your home and tell you to keep this to yourself.

In KGF: Chapter 2, which starred Yash and Sanjay Dutt, Raveena last appeared. She also has Patna Shukla from Arbaaz Khan’s Ghudchadi, starring Sanjay Dutt. Aranyak, a Netflix series she created, will return for a second season in addition to these.
