  • The blocks will reach Virunga National Park, a gorilla sanctuary in eastern Congo.
  • A petition signed by over 100,000 individuals is urging President Felix Tshisekedi to halt the construction.

Congo says it will proceed with plans to auction off the vast bulk of oil and gas drilling blocks in the country’s rainforest and peatland.

The Ministry of Hydrocarbon stated that 27 oil and 3 gas blocks will be auctioned, up from 16 in May.

The blocks reach Virunga National Park, a gorilla sanctuary in eastern Congo.

Didier Budimbu, Congo’s hydrocarbons minister, claimed oil exploitation would help the public.

“The president, Felix Tshisekedi, has a vision and he wants to get his population out of poverty,” Budimbu said during a press conference.

According to the Norwegian Refugee Council, the DRC has more than 27 million people, including over 3 million children, who do not have enough food to eat themselves – one-third of the country’s population – and more than 5 million people who are internally displaced.

According to a news report, a petition signed by over 100,000 individuals is urging Democratic Republic of Congo President Felix Tshisekedi to halt the construction of new oil and gas reserves in the country.

Military aircraft drive US goods orders higher in June

Military aircraft
  • New orders for defense aircraft and parts surged 80.6 percent in June.
  • Excluding the volatile transportation segment, new orders still gained 0.3 percent.
  • The increase points to solid demand even as US inflation rages at a 40-year high.

An eye-popping surge in new orders for US military aircraft in June drove a surprise increase in demand for big-ticket manufactured goods, according to government data released Wednesday.

New orders for defense aircraft and parts surged 80.6 percent compared to May, pushing the total for all durable goods up 1.9 percent in the month to $272.6 billion, the Commerce Department reported.

Economists were projecting a 0.5 percent drop in the key data point that feeds into quarterly economic growth calculations.

Orders have increased in eight of the past nine months, and even excluding the volatile transportation segment, new orders still gained 0.3 percent.

The increase points to solid demand even as US inflation rages at a 40-year high, but economists warn uncertainty caused by the war in Ukraine may cool business investment plans, which could tamp down orders in coming months.

The US Federal Reserve is on an aggressive campaign to raise interest rates and to cool the economy and douse inflation fires — with another hike expected later Wednesday.

Even as borrowing costs rise, firms and households still have plenty of cash and pent up demand, in part due to supply snarls throughout the recovery from the pandemic downturn.

Gregory Daco, chief economist at EY Parthenon, called it “very encouraging news from the business side,” saying “orders were still growing strongly” for goods outside the defense aircraft sector.

While civilian aircraft declined in the month, orders for vehicles and parts gained 1.5 percent.

Ian Shepherson of Pantheon Macroeconomics said he expects the volatile numbers to slow in coming months.

“The surge in the headline does not change the bigger picture of a slowdown in spending, but it has not reached recession-type proportions,” he said in an analysis.

Ukraine gets closer to grain exports striking a Russian held bridge

Ukraine
  • The Ukrainian navy says operations at its blockaded Black Sea ports have resumed.
  • Ukraine and Russia agreed on a plan to allow grain stranded by Moscow’s naval blockade to be exported from three ports.
  • Ukrainian artillery struck a vital bridge in Moscow-controlled territory in south Ukraine.

Ukraine said that operations at its blockaded Black Sea ports had resumed, as it drew closer to resuming grain shipments with the establishment of a coordination centre to oversee an UN-backed pact.

As Ukrainian forces seek to retake the Kherson region, Kyiv’s artillery struck a vital bridge in Moscow-controlled territory in south Ukraine, disrupting an important supply line.

German officials allege Gazprom curtailed gas exports to Europe via the Nord Stream pipeline to 20% of capacity in retaliation for Western sanctions imposed after the invasion.

Ukraine and Russia agreed last week to allow food stuck by Moscow’s naval embargo to be shipped from three ports.

Government to sell UAE $2 billion stake in 5 energy companies

Government to sell energy stakes
  • The Federal Cabinet has approved the sale of shares in OGDCL and two other oil and gas businesses to close a funding gap.
  • The government also intends to sell the Balloki Power Plant and Haveli Bahadur Shah Power Plant to the UAE on a G2G basis.
  • National Assembly (NA) session is now underway and an ordinance cannot be issued during that time.

According to sources, the Federal Cabinet has given the go-ahead to sell its holdings in five energy companies to the UAE for $2 billion on a government-to-government (G2G) basis.

Oil & Gas Development Company (OGDCL), Balloki Power Plant, Haveli Bahadur Shah Power Plant, and two further oil and gas enterprises are among these businesses.

According to sources, the Federal Cabinet approved the sale of shares in OGDCL and two other oil and gas businesses today in order to close a funding gap.

There was some debate over whether the International Monetary Fund (IMF) had requested that the nation fill the deficit; however, Miftah Ismail has stated that the IMF never made such a request.

The funds were only being set up by the government to cover its external financing need.

According to sources, the government also intends to sell the Balloki Power Plant and the Haveli Bahadur Shah Power Plant to the UAE on a G2G basis in addition to the shares.

At a news briefing in Islamabad, Miftah Ismail had already disclosed the sale of both plants, but he had kept the identity of the buyer a secret. Similar to yesterday, Miftah mentioned the government’s plans to sell both plants during a lecture today without disclosing the plants’ worth or the nation’s name.

According to sources, the total capital required to build both plants would be $2 billion when business shares are sold.

It should be emphasized that the government has not yet released an ordinance in this matter because the National Assembly (NA) session is now underway and an ordinance cannot be issued during that time.

However, according to insiders, the ordinance won’t likely be passed until after the NA session is over.

It is anticipated that the G2G ordinance may be exempt from five separate regulations. This comprises the laws governing the stock market, privatization, the Companies Act, the Public Procurement Regulatory Authority (PPRA), and the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP).

Police have identified two Saudi sisters found dead in “strange” circumstances in their Sydney residence last month.

Asra Abdullah Alsehli, 24, and Amaal Abdullah Alsehli, 23, were found dead on June 7, police said.

“Despite extensive inquiries, detectives have been unable to ascertain how the women died,” the statement said. “However, it is believed the women had been deceased for some time prior to being located.”
NSW Police told that the sisters arrived from Saudi Arabia in 2017. “They had no visible injuries,” officials stated.
Any public information could help solve the inquiry, said Detective Inspector Claudia Allcroft.
“Detectives are interested in speaking with anyone who may have seen or who may have information about the women’s movements in the days and weeks prior to their deaths — which we believe occurred in early May,” Allcroft said in the NSW Police statement.
In a statement posted on Twitter, the Saudi Consulate in Sydney said it was in contact with Australian authorities about the case. “The Consulate also expresses its sincere condolences to the family of the deceased,” it said.

WHO believe that Wuhan market animals likely started Covid-19 flu

WHO
  • The coronavirus most likely originated at the Huanan Seafood Market in Wuhan, China.
  • The initial Covid-19 cases were among live animal merchants or shoppers at a market.
  • Researchers believe two viruses may have passed from animals to humans.

WHO advised scientists to continue investigating all probable causes of the Covid-19 outbreak, including a lab leak. Two new research utilise completely different methodologies but reach the same conclusion: The coronavirus most likely originated at the Huanan Seafood Market in Wuhan, China.

The research was initially published as preprints online in February, but has since completed peer review and was published in the journal Science on Tuesday.

Scientists from around the world used mapping techniques and social media reports in one study. They say the virus was likely present in live animals sold at the market in late 2019. Close confines may have allowed diseases to spread. The report doesn’t name the sick animals.

The initial Covid-19 cases were among live animal merchants or shoppers at a market. They believe two viruses passed from animals to humans.
All eight COVID-19 cases detected before December 20 were in the western section of the market, where animals were traded. Five animal sellers predicting human instances.

“The clustering is very, very specific,” according to research co-author Kristian Andersen, a professor in Scripps Research’s Department of Immunology and Microbiology.

Rana Sana: 2,000 FC members will get anti-riot training this FY

Rana Sanaullah

ISLAMABAD: While describing the Frontier Constabulary (FC) as a national asset, Minister of Interior Rana Sana Ullah said on Wednesday that anti-riot training will be provided to 2,000 FC members this fiscal year and 5,000 next year.

Addressing the passing out of the First Batch of FC Anti-Riot Training Course, he stated that the FC will be supplied with all-out facilities to make it the greatest professional force. He stated that following anti-riot training, the FC will now offer additional support to the Islamabad Police and Rangers to maintain peace and order in the Federal Capital.

The minister also stated that the government will subsidize the training of 5,000 FC employees next year. He stated that when the law was amended, the FC could also execute the duty of maintaining law and order.

Considering the FC’s extra anti-riot function in addition to defending the country’s borders, he stated that women should be recruited into the force as they form more than half of the country’s overall population. He requested that the FC Commandant submit a plan for the enlistment of women into the force. He would not only get the project approved, but he would also get funding.

The minister praised the Islamabad Police, FC, and Rangers for using tear gas to disperse armed rioters and demonstrators in the Federal Capital on May 25. He stated that all three units performed admirably in maintaining law and order.

Rana Sanaullah stated that 400 FC staff had received specific anti-riot training, for which Rs 333 million had already been spent out of the budget’s total allocation of Rs 667 million.

He stated that the pay and other allowances of the Islamabad Police and FC had been increased, bringing them in line with the Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police forces, costing an extra Rs 738 million.

Toyota, Suzuki to curtail production in Pakistan

Toyota Suzuki to curtail production
  • Toyota and Suzuki intend to shut down portions of their plants next month.
  • Lack of raw materials due to import restrictions and fluctuating exchange rates.
  • Less than two months’ worth of imports may be covered by the $9.3 billion in reserves held by the central bank.

Toyota and Suzuki, Pakistan’s two largest automakers, intend to shut down portions of their plants next month due to a lack of raw materials due to import restrictions and fluctuating exchange rates, officials at both businesses said on Wednesday.

Since the rupee has lost almost 20% of its value this year as a result of declining foreign reserves, a weakening currency, and a growing current account deficit, the government has tried to reduce imports.

Industries that rely on imports to complete finished items claim the central bank’s action has delayed the clearing of letters of credit, causing banks to run out of dollars and limiting their capacity to import raw materials.

According to Ali Asghar Jamali, CEO of Indus Motor Company Ltd, which assembles Toyota vehicles in Pakistan, “there will be 10 working days next month, but only if the central bank permits us to create a letter of credit based on the quota they promised.”

Due to the lack of dollars in the country, he claimed that the company was issuing refunds to customers who had experienced delays and markups on their payments.

Deliveries were also expected to be delayed by at least three months.

Less than two months’ worth of imports may be covered by the $9.3 billion in reserves held by the central bank.

Due to record-high imports, the current account deficit for the most recent fiscal year reached 5% of GDP.

The attitude was shared by Pak Suzuki, which assembles Suzuki automobiles locally and cited the central bank’s new system for prior approval for imports.

Shafiq A. Shaikh, the head of public relations at Pak Suzuki Motors, stated that restrictions had a negative influence on the clearance of import consignments from ports.

He stated that a plant closure in August could occur due to a lack of materials.

Shaikh warned that if the current trend continues, there will be serious issues starting in August 2022.

Requests for comments were not answered by the State Bank of Pakistan.

According to data from the Pakistan Automotive Manufactures Association, the sale of locally produced cars in Pakistan increased by about 50% between July 2021 and May 2022 compared to the same time the previous year.
