Tokyo Olympics: Algerian judoka withdraws to avoid facing Israeli Opponent

Tokyo Olympics

Tokyo Olympics: Fethi Nourine told Algerian TV that his political support for the Palestinian cause made it impossible for him to compete against Tohar Butbul.

After the draw placed him in a likely match-up against an Israeli, an Algerian judoka has withdrawn from the Tokyo Olympics before the tournament starts.

Fethi Nourine told Algerian TV that his political support for the Palestinian cause made it impossible for him to compete against Tohar Butbul.

“We worked a lot to reach the Olympics, and the news came as a shock, a thunder,” he told the channel late on Thursday. Nourine said his decision was “final,” and he would not “get his hands dirty.”

On Monday, the 30-year-old was set to compete in his first men’s 73 kg fight against Sudan’s Mohamed Abdalrasool. A win would have put him in the following round against Butbul, who has a first-round bye.

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has gone on for decades, with tensions escalating this year as clashes in disputed Jerusalem sparked cross-border conflicts.

Binance may go public in the US, according to its CEO

binance

Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao claimed Binance U.S. was “looking at the IPO route” at an online event on Friday.

Soon, Binance U.S. may list shares on a U.S. exchange through an initial public offering.

Despite the exchange’s ongoing regulatory issues, Changpeng “CZ” Zhao, indicated that an IPO for its US-based division is in the process.

Zhao revealed the intentions while speaking at Siam Commercial Bank of Thailand’s online event REDeFiNE Tomorrow.

Zhao said the company was working with US regulators and instituting “structures” to make the IPO aspirations a reality.

“Binance U.S. is looking at the IPO route. Most regulators are familiar with a certain pattern or having headquarters, having corporate structure. But we are setting up those structures to make it easier for an IPO to happen” he said.

It’s important to understand that it is not the same as Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange. Because Binance U.S. operates within the confines of the United States’ regulatory environment, it offers a different set of trading pairs and a lesser trading volume than its global version.

Bitcoin will be a key part of Twitter’s future, according to Jack Dorsey

Bitcoin

Over the last few years, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey has been a big supporter of Bitcoin. He and Jay Z just formed a Bitcoin fund. In a recent development, Dorsey stated that Bitcoin, together with decentralization (In blockchain, decentralization refers to the transfer of control and decision-making from a centralized entity) and artificial intelligence, will be the future of the company.

If the internet had a native currency, he claims, products like subscription, Commerce, Tip Jar, and Super Follows will be able to move faster.

“I think this is a big part of our future. I think there is a lot of innovation above just currency to be had, especially as we think about decentralizing social media more and providing more economic incentives. So I think it’s hugely important to Twitter and to Twitter shareholders that we continue to look at the space and invest aggressively in it” he said.

Dorsey stated on Twitter’s second-quarter earnings call that Bitcoin is the greatest asset to become the internet currency and that once this is established, the company would be able to expand its product line more quickly.

This is the first time Dorsey has openly discussed Bitcoin integration into Twitter’s products, according to a Twitter spokesperson.

South Korea tightens the rules on foreign crypto exchanges

South Korea

South Korea is tightening its regulatory crackdown on unregistered international crypto exchanges, lately requesting that foreign virtual-asset service providers register with them to risk being shut down.

In April of this year, the Financial Services Commission (FSC), formerly the Financial Supervisory Commission, said that any Korean crypto exchanges that did not register with the regulatory body risked being shut down.

The FSC has now expanded its constitutional power to include international virtual-asset service providers.

The FSC said in a statement that it has issued 27 ‘warnings’ to virtual asset service providers:

“For foreign VASPs that continue to operate without registration beyond the September 24 deadline, the KoFIU will notify them of their illegal activities and take actions such as blocking access to their websites to inhibit their illegal business operations,”

The statement from South Korea went on to explain that if crypto exchanges do not register by the September deadline, they risk facing prison sentences or hefty fines:

“If foreign VASPs fail to register with the KoFIU, they shall cease their business operation targeting Koreans from September 25, 2021. They are notified of the possibility of being subject to penalties as prescribed by the Act if they continue to operate without registration.”

Tokyo Olympics: Opening Ceremony highlights ’emotional unity’

Tokyo Olympics

The Tokyo 2020 Olympics Opening Ceremony began on Friday, with a solemn performance in front of a pretty much empty Olympic Stadium that acknowledged the pandemic that forced the Games to be postponed a year ago.

The dancers and athletes began the performance by working out and training alone, simulating the disconnection and isolation produced by COVID-19. With a stylized pattern of dancers connecting to one another with brilliantly colored red bands, the sequence evolved into a symbol of the Olympics bringing the world back together.

Tokyo Olympics

Misia, a Japanese singer, sung the national song, and then dancers dressed as craftsmen built the interlocking Olympic rings while traditional Japanese music played.

Tokyo Olympics

In the last hours of preparation, the event was also marred by a slew of scandals.

Comedian Kentaro Kobayashi, the director of the Tokyo Olympics Opening and Closing Ceremonies, was sacked on Thursday when a video from a 1998 act surfaced in which he made Holocaust jokes.

“In the short time remaining before the Opening Ceremony, we offer our deepest apologies for any offense and anguish this matter may have caused to the many people involved in the Olympic Games, as well as to the citizens of Japan and the world,” the Tokyo organizers said in a statement.
