Flour mill owners threaten countrywide protest from June 30

Flour Mills Association Gives Price Hike Threat

KARACHI: The Pakistan Flour Mills Association (PFMA) Sindh Zone on Tuesday announced a countrywide protest from June 30, 2021, for an indefinite period against the proposed increase in the turnover tax.

At a press conference, PFMA Sindh Zone chairman Chaudhry Muhammad Yousuf announced that the flour mills would stop wheat grinding from June 23, 2021, (Wednesday), adding that the mill operations would remain suspended on June 24 and 25 as a token strike.

“If the government pays no heed to our demand, then the flour millers will observe a complete shutdown from June 30, 2021 for an indefinite period,” he said.

[amazonad category=”Mobile”]

Wheat flour is a basic need of the masses and the millers are providing this essential food item, Yousuf said, adding, in the past, this important food item was exempted from the tax to ensure supply of the commodity at lower price but the present government has increased the turnover tax on wheat flour from 0.25 per cent to 1.25 per cent, which is unacceptable.

The byproducts of wheat were exempted from tax in the past but now those were also subject to 17 per cent sales tax. He demanded the government to withdraw its decision to increase the turnover tax and imposition of 17 per cent sales tax.

China crypto crackdown wipes $400 billion off market, BTC slides

Cryptocurrency

China’s renewed crackdown on the cryptocurrency industry has wiped off around $400 billion in value from the total digital currency market since Friday when a major bitcoin mining hub ordered miners to shut down operations.

Bitcoin was down by more than 8% in the last 24 hours, at $29,791, at around 8:40 a.m. ET on Tuesday. It broke below $30,000 for the first time since Jan. 27, according to CoinDesk data. Other cryptocurrencies including ether and XRP were also sharply lower.

[amazonad category=”Auto”]

Over the past few days, China has stepped up its efforts to rein in the country’s cryptocurrency industry.

Mining ban, PBOC warning

Authorities in China’s Sichuan province ordered cryptocurrency miners to shut down their operations, according to multiple media reports. Sichuan is one of the biggest bitcoin mining centers in China.

Many bitcoin mines in the southwestern Chinese province were closed as of Sunday, according to state-backed tabloid the Global Times.

These are not new rules, but the PBOC’s comments show how China’s top regulators are stepping up monitoring financial institutions related to cryptocurrencies.

China banned local cryptocurrency exchanges in 2017 forcing them to move offshore. That did not stop Chinese traders from buying and selling digital coins, though it added a layer of complexity to crypto trading.

Chinese traders would have to move their Chinese yuan to a platform to buy crypto. That would be done via e-payments service like Alipay or a bank account. So the PBOC’s latest reminder to financial institutions could be looking to stamp this out further.

Since Friday, when the Sichuan authorities notified miners to shut down operations, bitcoin is down around 16%. The central bank notice added further pressure.

Equity market continues bearish trend on rising oil prices

Equity market closes lower over investors’ low interest

KARACHI: The equity market continues to witness bearish trend on Tuesday owing to escalation in the international oil prices and decline in the rupee value against the US dollar, dealers said.

“The pressure in the market was on the back of [an] increase in [the] oil prices in the international market along with the rupee depreciation. In addition to this, Pakistan’s trade deficit widened from $21.07 billion to $27.46 billion in 11MFY21,” an analyst at Pearl Securities said.

The Pakistan Stock Exchange KSE-100 shares index shed 0.05 per cent, or 25.38 points, to close at 47,987.14 points. The KSE-30 shares index shed 0.08 per cent, or 14.59 points, to close at 19,325.06 points.

[amazonad category=”Mobile”]

As many as 420 scrips were active, of which 162 advanced, 236 declined and 22 remained unchanged. The ready market volumes stood at 610.74 million shares, compared with the turnover of 839.18 million shares in the last trading session.

Maaz Mulla at JS Global Capital said that the market started off on a positive note but soon came under pressure, as it sank to a low of 47,931 points.

“Despite the bulls’ best efforts to revive the KSE-100 during the second half, the benchmark index slid again to close the session at a loss of 25 points.”

Selling pressure continued in the cement sector where Pioneer Cement declined 1.4 per cent, Cherat Cement went down 1.1 per cent, Dewan Cement fell 0.8 per cent and Flying Cement closed 1.5 per cent lower.

The bullish rally in the textile sector was fuelled by the news of healthy textile exports for May. As a result, Kohinoor Textile Mills went up 5.3 per cent, Gul Ahmed Textile gained 7.5 per cent, Nishat Chunian Limited surged 4 per cent and Nishat Mills went up 2 per cent.

Going forward, analysts expect the equity market to witness volatility due to the rollover week and recommend investors to avail of any downside as an opportunity to buy in construction and export-oriented sectors. However, the market may turn positive if Pakistan gets an exit from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) grey list, which is to be announced soon.

The companies, which reflected the highest gains included Unilever Foods, up Rs790 to close at Rs16,500/share; and Bata Pakistan, up Rs48.95 to close at Rs1,749.95/share.

WTC: India vs New Zealand Final Fifth Day, New Zealand 101/2

India vs New Zealand World Test Championship (WTC) final test fifth day cricket score. New Zealand resumed on 101 runs for the loss of two wickets.

New Zealand, who resumed on 101 runs for the loss of two wickets, lost their upper hand after their all-seam attack bowled out India for a below-par 217 runs.

Captain Kane Williamson, batting on 12 runs, and Ross Taylor, who is yet to score, would have expected to erase the 116-run deficit and push for a handy first-innings lead.

[amazonad category=”Electronics”]

However, rain washed out an entire day’s play for the second time in the WTC final on Monday, diminishing hopes of a result in the India v New Zealand contest.

Only 141.1 overs have been bowled in the match up till now as the inclement Southampton weather continued to bedevil the opening edition of test cricket’s pinnacle event.

INDIA Playing XI: Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli (c), Ajinkya Rahane, Rishabh Pant, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah
