Flour Mills Association Gives Price Hike Threat

KARACHI: The Pakistan Flour Mills Association (PFMA) Sindh Zone on Tuesday announced a countrywide protest from June 30, 2021, for an indefinite period against the proposed increase in the turnover tax.

At a press conference, PFMA Sindh Zone chairman Chaudhry Muhammad Yousuf announced that the flour mills would stop wheat grinding from June 23, 2021, (Wednesday), adding that the mill operations would remain suspended on June 24 and 25 as a token strike.

“If the government pays no heed to our demand, then the flour millers will observe a complete shutdown from June 30, 2021 for an indefinite period,” he said.

Wheat flour is a basic need of the masses and the millers are providing this essential food item, Yousuf said, adding, in the past, this important food item was exempted from the tax to ensure supply of the commodity at lower price but the present government has increased the turnover tax on wheat flour from 0.25 per cent to 1.25 per cent, which is unacceptable.

The byproducts of wheat were exempted from tax in the past but now those were also subject to 17 per cent sales tax. He demanded the government to withdraw its decision to increase the turnover tax and imposition of 17 per cent sales tax.
