Hajj 1441: Saudi Arabia opens registration for foreign residents

Following the Coronavirus outbreak, Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Hajj and Umrah opens a registration for Hajj 2020 (1441 Hijri) through its website from July 6 to 10.

The ministry has allowed a total of 10,000 pilgrims for Hajj 1441, 70% foreign nationals who reside in the kingdom, while 30% are Saudi Arabia citizens.

According to the details, the kingdom has decided to reduce the number of hajj pilgrims this year to only 10,000 residents to combat the spread of COVID-19 pandemic.

Among the Saudis who permitted to perform the hajj are medical and security personnel who had recovered from COVID-19. Through database of the recovered patents, they were selected because of fulfilling the health criteria to perform the hajj pilgrimage.

That is a recognition of their commendable role in taking care of the health of various segments of the society in all phases of the fight against the pandemic.

In a statement, the ministry said that the registration on the website (localhaj.haj.gov.sa) for expatriates started on Monday (July 6) and will end on Friday (July 10).

The results of Hajj nomination will be announced on Sunday (July 12), the statement read.

The selection of eligible expatriates and the performance of their pilgrimage will be strictly in line with coronavirus preventive measures.

Only those expatriates between the ages of 20 and 50 who are not suffering from any chronic diseases need to apply.

ECB confirms Pakistan’s three-test matches date, venue

England Cricket Board confirmed dates and venues for Pakistan’s three-Test tour, with the series starting at Old Trafford on August 5.

International cricket returns on Wednesday following the coronavirus lockdown when England play the first match of their three-Test series against West Indies at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton, followed by two matches at Old Trafford, in Manchester.

The first match of the Pakistan series will also take place at Old Trafford, with the second two at the Ageas Bowl. The second Test starts on August 13, with the third beginning on August 21.

Both venues are considered bio-secure, with hotels on site.

Old Trafford will also host three Twenty20 international (T20I) matches between England and Pakistan, on August 28, 30 and September 1.

Ireland will play three one-day internationals (ODIs) at the Ageas Bowl on July 30, August 1 and August 4.

Countries running out of life-saving HIV drugs, says WHO

A number of countries globally say they are at risk of running out of life-saving AIDS drugs because of disruptions to supply lines and other problems caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the World Health Organization (WHO) said.

Twenty-four out of those 73 nations have already reported critically low supplies of the vital antiretroviral drugs, the agency said.

“The findings of this survey are deeply concerning,” the WHO’s director general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a statement at the International AIDS conference.

“We cannot let the COVID-19 pandemic undo the hard-won gains in the global response to this disease.

The WHO said about 8.3 million HIV-positive people are reliant on the antiretroviral drugs in the 24 worst-hit states. Whereas, about a third of all people taking HIV treatment globally.

While there is no cure for the human immunodeficiency virus that causes AIDS, drugs known as antiretrovirals (ARVs) can control the virus and prevent HIV-positive people from transmitting it to others.

About 38 million people worldwide are currently infected with HIV.
