In a major move due to the novel Coronavirus outbreak across the globe, Saudi Arabia’s health ministry has announced that pilgrims who want to perform Hajj this year must receive the COVID-19 vaccine.

According to the details, Saudi Health Minister Tawfiq Al Rabiah has said that participation in the Hajj season will ensure that pilgrims must be vaccinated, as part of the main condition for the pilgrimage. 

“The COVID-19 vaccine is mandatory for those willing to come to the Hajj and will be one of the main conditions (for receiving a permit to come),” a circular signed by the health minister read.

Previously in 2020, the Hajj Ministry of Saudi Arabia had announced the reduction of pilgrims to curb the spread of the novel Coronavirus. Two-thirds of those pilgrims were among foreign residents in Saudi Arabia and one-third were Saudi citizens.

Up to 1,000 people residing in the kingdom had participated in the Holy ritual after what many saw as an opaque selection process that left a wave of applicants rejected.

The 2020 Hajj pilgrimage with only just 1,000 pilgrims due to the COVID-19 pandemic will begin on Wednesday for the first time in modern history.

Up to 1,000 people residing in the kingdom will participate in the Holy ritual after what many saw as an opaque selection process that left a wave of applicants rejected.

The foreigners are barred from this year’s Hajj, usually a huge global media event, as the government tightens access to the holy city of Mecca and puts in place strict health restrictions to prevent a virus outbreak during the five-day pilgrimage.

Saudi Arabia has recorded more than 260,000 cases of the novel coronavirus. While the total infections reached 16 million from around the globe.

According to authorities, Mask-clad pilgrims began trickling into Makkah over the weekend and were subject to temperature checks and placed in quarantine.

The government of Saudi Arabia on Monday announced that Hajj 1441 will take place on July 29 with only 1,000 pilgrims as the country suffered a huge loss due to Coronavirus pandemic.

Some 2.5 million people from all over the world usually participate in the ritual of Hajj [1441] that takes place over several days in the holy city of Makkah.

This year’s Hajj will be held under strict hygiene protocols, with access limited to pilgrims under 65 years old and without any chronic illnesses.

“The stand of pilgrims on Mount Arafat, the peak of the Hajj ritual, falls on Thursday,” the official Saudi Press Agency cited the Supreme Court as saying. It indicated that Wednesday would be the first day of the annual event.

The timing of the Hajj is determined by the position of the moon, in accordance with the Islamic lunar calendar.

Following the Coronavirus outbreak, Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Hajj and Umrah opens a registration for Hajj 2020 (1441 Hijri) through its website from July 6 to 10.

The ministry has allowed a total of 10,000 pilgrims for Hajj 1441, 70% foreign nationals who reside in the kingdom, while 30% are Saudi Arabia citizens.

According to the details, the kingdom has decided to reduce the number of hajj pilgrims this year to only 10,000 residents to combat the spread of COVID-19 pandemic.

Among the Saudis who permitted to perform the hajj are medical and security personnel who had recovered from COVID-19. Through database of the recovered patents, they were selected because of fulfilling the health criteria to perform the hajj pilgrimage.

That is a recognition of their commendable role in taking care of the health of various segments of the society in all phases of the fight against the pandemic.

In a statement, the ministry said that the registration on the website (localhaj.haj.gov.sa) for expatriates started on Monday (July 6) and will end on Friday (July 10).

The results of Hajj nomination will be announced on Sunday (July 12), the statement read.

The selection of eligible expatriates and the performance of their pilgrimage will be strictly in line with coronavirus preventive measures.

Only those expatriates between the ages of 20 and 50 who are not suffering from any chronic diseases need to apply.
