EU imposes sanctions for violence against women

EU
  • Sanctions have been imposed on nine individuals and three official organizations.
  • The names are likely to be formally added to the EU sanctions list later today.
  • Member states had approved them.

BRUSSELS – The European Union sanctioned officials from six countries, including Russia and Afghanistan, on Tuesday ahead of International Women’s Day for violence and human rights violations against women.

Sanctions have been imposed on nine individuals and three official organizations, subjecting them to travel bans and the freezing of any assets held in the EU.

Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Fedorov and his deputy Ivan Ryabov are accused of ordering the arrest and torture of female anti-war protestors.

Russian special forces commander Major General Nikolai Kuznetsov and tank commander Colonel Ramil Ibatullin have also been named, as have units accused of systematic rape and sexual abuse in Ukraine.

The Taliban minister for higher education, Neda Mohammad Nadeem, and the minister for virtue propagation and vice repression, Muhammad Khalid Hanafi, are also named from Afghanistan.

The former is accused of depriving women of education, while the latter is accused of “restricting their freedom of expression and inflicting harsh punishments and brutality on those who do not obey the Taliban’s edicts.”

In South Sudan, Gatluak Nyang Hoth, the commissioner of Mayiandit county, and Gordon Koang Biel, the commissioner of Koch county, are accused of making “widespread and systematic use of sexual violence as a war tactic and instrumentalized it as a reward and entitlement for men participating in the conflict.”

Myanmar’s deputy minister of home affairs Toe Ui is said to have allowed military security agents to “use forced nudity, rape, electro-shocks, burning of genitalia and excessive violence during the arbitrary detention and interrogation of men, women.

Ui is a former head of the Office of the Chief of Military Security Affairs (OCMSA), which is listed separately as an agency responsible “for systematic and widespread sexual and gender-based violence.”

Iran’s Qarchak jail in Tehran province is identified as a place where guards sexually abuse women and threaten them with rape in order to elicit false confessions.

In Syria, the government is claimed to have ordered the Republican Guard to “employ sexual and gender-based violence to suppress and intimidate the Syrian people, particularly women, and girls.”

The names are likely to be formally added to the EU sanctions list later today, but diplomatic sources told that member states had approved them.

“By imposing these sanctions, we’re sending a clear message to perpetrators that they won’t get away with their crimes,” the Netherlands’ foreign minister Wopke Hoekstra said in a news release.

“This is also a message to the victims: the EU will support you, wherever you are in the world. Sanctions are a powerful way for us to stand up for universal values and force international change,” he said.

“We will not hesitate to expand the list to include other perpetrators of sexual violence.”

In a shake-up, Qatar’s emir names a new prime minister

Qatar
  • Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani was selected as the new head of government.
  • Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani has been appointed interior minister.
  • Sheikh Khalifa had also served in the internal security force of Lekhwiya.

Qatar’s emir picked his top diplomat as prime minister on Tuesday and appointed a new interior minister, completing a changing of the guard in the wealthy Gulf kingdom, according to observers.

Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the ruler’s administration claimed, had accepted “the resignation” of prime minister and interior minister Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa bin Abdulaziz Al Thani.

Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani was selected as the new head of government and sworn in within hours of the announcement, according to official media.

Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, who led the government’s security committee during last year’s World Cup, has been appointed interior minister.

The new prime minister, an economist, is 42 years old, the same as the emir, and the new interior minister is likewise of the same generation.

No significant modifications

Sheikh Khalifa had also served in the internal security force of Lekhwiya.

The departing prime minister, 55, had been in office since January 2020.

“He was the last real link in government to the father emir,” said a diplomatic observer, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the topic.

Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the present emir’s father, abdicated in favor of his son in 2013. Sheikh Hamad had deposed his father in a bloodless coup 18 years before.

The current emir has made no significant modifications to the Gulf state’s staunchly pro-US foreign policy.

Yet, Qatar’s expanding riches, which are based on its large natural gas reserves, have resulted in significant changes to the tiny state and its international profile.

In the last decade, the population has grown by one-third to almost three million, primarily due to a significant influx of migrant laborers, whose treatment has come under worldwide scrutiny.

Political parties are still prohibited in Qatar, however the country held its first direct election for a consultative council in 2021.

Qatar hosted the World Cup last year as part of a campaign to become a worldwide sports powerhouse, as well as to play a larger diplomatic and mediation role in geopolitical problems.

As part of the current changes, Sheikh Bandar bin Mohammed bin Saud Al Thani, the governor of the central bank, was appointed chairman of the Qatar Investment Authority, one of the world’s largest sovereign wealth funds.

The new prime minister had already held the job.

With the new government, Defence Minister Khalid bin Muhammad Al-Attiyah is named deputy prime minister.

Hugh Jackman consumes absurd amounts of calories

Hugh Jackman
  • Hugh Jackman is reprising his role as Wolverine in Deadpool 3.
  • The Marvel Cinematic Universe may be on a dry run right now.
  • The amount of calories he is consuming is not only insane but also unimaginable.

Hugh Jackman is reprising his role as Wolverine in Deadpool 3, and his preparation is giving us a very intense vibe.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe may be on a dry run right now, with the first film from Phase 5 Ant-Man And The Wasp Quantumania failing to impress audiences, but fans around the world should not lose hope. It is the same multiverse that has allowed the universe’s veterans to return and join the MCU. Hugh Jackman’s return as Wolverine in Deadpool 3 is one of the most anticipated and exciting comebacks/debuts among many. And now his preparation details are making us want to scream.

Later last year, the 54-year-old Hollywood star shocked the world by resuming his role as Wolverine in the threequel to Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool after concluding his run with Fox in 2017’s Logan. The fandom has been waiting for him to appear on set and deliver the film as soon as possible.

According to the latest reports, the amount of calories he is consuming is not only insane but also unimaginable on an average day, so Hugh Jackman is going above and beyond to give the best performance of Wolverine. Read on to find out everything you need to know about the same.

According to reports, Hugh Jackman, who is preparing to reprise his role as Logan in Deadpool 3, recently shared a photo of his daily intake, which was quite large. His meals, as per the portal, include black bass, which is 2,000 calories, and two chicken burgers, with around 1,000 calories. Patagonia salmon with 2,100 calories, and two grass-fed sirloins contributing 1,100 calories, making it is a total of 8,000 calories a day. This is a large caloric intake considering his normal intake without Wolverine must be in the 2000 to 3000 range.

The actor is gradually increasing his intake because back in January he was building upt o eating 6,000 calories a day. Hugh Jackman on The Late Show had said, “I’m building up. I’m on about 4,500-5,000 calories at the moment. I wore a heart rate monitor [for ‘The Music Man’] because my trainer said, ‘I need to know what I’m working with here, because I’m trying to bulk you up.’ I burned 1,500 calories in the show, eight times a week. So she goes: ‘Oh, you gotta eat.’ So I was eating 4,500 calories a day, it was not pretty. Now I’m just eating and training.”

Two Americans killed and two others were abducted in Mexico

Americans
  • Two American are dead, two are alive.
  • Four US citizens were kidnapped by armed men on 3 March.
  • They had traveled to Mexico for cosmetic surgery.

Two of the four Americans kidnapped at gunpoint in Mexico last week are dead and two are alive and now back in the US, Mexican and US officials say.

Four US citizens were kidnapped by armed men on 3 March while driving into Matamoros in the north-eastern state of Tamaulipas, Mexico, across the border from Texas.

According to family in the United States, they had traveled there for cosmetic surgery.

José “N,” 24, of Tamaulipas, was arrested.

White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said: “We offer our deepest condolences to the friends and families of those who were killed in these attacks.”

Tamaulipas Attorney General Irving Barrios Mojica tweeted that the two surviving victims were handed to the US on Tuesday in collaboration with the US embassy in Matamoros.

A heavily armed Mexican military convoy transported them back under armed guard.

The FBI later verified that two Americans were found deceased and that the other two had been transported to US hospitals for treatment.

“One of the surviving victims sustained serious injuries during the attack,” the FBI said.

The agency will also engage with international partners and other law enforcement organizations to “hold those responsible for this horrific and violent attack accountable for their crimes,” according to the statement.

Zindell Brown and Shaeed Woodard’s bodies have been recovered and are being repatriated, according to US officials.

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said: “We are very sorry that this happened in our country and we send our condolences to the families of the victims, friends, and the United States government, and we will continue doing our work to guarantee peace and tranquillity.”

Family members identified the injured Americans as Latavia “Tay” McGee, a South Carolina mother of six, and Eric James Williams.

The four were traveling through Matamoros, a 500,000-person city immediately across the border from Brownsville, Texas, in a white minivan with North Carolina license plates when unidentified assailants opened fire, according to the FBI.

They are shown on video being carried into a pickup truck by heavily armed guys. Others look to be unconscious and are dragged to the truck while one is manhandled onto the vehicle.

Last Friday’s incident killed a Mexican woman, thought to be a 33-year-old witness more than a block away.

Later that day, Mexican officials verified the arrest of a 24-year-old male and the discovery of the four Americans at a wooden house outside Matamoros.

The victims were moved to numerous sites between their kidnapping on Friday and their discovery on Tuesday “to create uncertainty,” according to officials.

Nord Stream Pipeline: Ukraine denies the involvement in sabotage

Nord Stream Pipeline
  • A pro-Ukrainian group may have been behind last year’s operation against Russia’s gas exports to Europe.
  • The operation was carried out by a group loyal to Ukraine.
  • The pro-Ukrainian individuals were motivated to damage the pipelines.

Ukraine has denied involvement in sabotaging the Nord Stream pipelines following a media story stating new evidence indicating a “pro-Ukrainian group” may have been behind last year’s operation against Russia’s gas exports to Europe.

The firing of a senior Ukrainian official on Tuesday was in response to a New York Times report that claimed new intelligence examined by US authorities.

“Although I enjoy collecting amusing conspiracy theories about (the Ukrainian) government, I have to say: (Ukraine) has nothing to do with the Baltic Sea mishap and has no information about ‘pro-(Ukraine) sabotage groups,'” Mykhailo Podolyak, top adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, wrote on Twitter.

According to American sources, the operation was carried out by a group loyal to Ukraine but acting independently of the government in Kyiv.

Who was responsible for the brazen sabotage last September that destroyed two pipelines bringing Russian gas into the European Union and targeted a critical source of revenue for Moscow has remained unknown. Both channels were blocked at the time of the incident, which came months after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Yet to identify

According to a source familiar with US intelligence, the assessment was not made with high confidence and is not the overwhelming view of the intelligence community. The US has yet to identify a perpetrator for the act.

Others in the US intelligence community believe that pro-Ukrainian individuals were motivated to damage the pipelines because Moscow was weaponizing them against Ukraine and Europe.

According to the source, the intelligence community has no evidence that Ukrainian elites, including Zelenskyy, were aware of or involved in the pipeline sabotage.

The episode, in which underwater explosions happened before the pipes ruptured in numerous locations, is still a major source of disagreement between Russia and the West.

The pipelines that connect Russia and Germany via the Baltic Sea to transport Russian gas to the European Union were controversial long before the Kremlin declared war on Ukraine, owing to concerns over Europe’s reliance on Russian energy.

Their destruction added another wrinkle to the energy confrontation that arose following the invasion as Europe sought to wean itself off Russian fuel.

Several investigations are being conducted by European authorities.

An act of sabotage

After discovering evidence of explosives at the sites, Swedish prosecutors concluded the pipeline bursts were an act of sabotage in November, but their preliminary inquiry has yet to establish any charges.

Addressing reporters on Tuesday, US National Security Council coordinator for strategic communications John Kirby referred queries to investigating European authorities and said he was “not going to get ahead of that investigative work.”

“Several of our European partners – in fact, three of them in Germany, Sweden and Denmark – have already opened investigations into what happened with the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, and those investigations are not closed. They’re still hard at work on that,” Kirby said.

Sightings of Russian vessels operating in the area where the leaks occurred raised concerns about Russia’s potential involvement, which at the time drew attention from both European and US officials as the only actor in the region believed to have both the capability and motivation to intentionally damage the pipelines.

Moscow has publicly denied attacking the pipelines and has blamed the explosions on the West. A spokeswoman for Russia termed the claims “predictably foolish and ludicrous” in September.

Earlier this month, during a G20 conference in New Delhi, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov urged on the need for a “fair and prompt investigation” into the blasts.

Prince Andrew’s ex-girlfriend likens Prince Harry and Prince William

Prince William
  • Lady Victoria Hervey said Prince Harry is on the verge of being “exiled”.
  • The father-of-two has been estranged from William for a “while”.
  • The model commented on Harry playing the victim in his feud with the Royal family.

Lady Victoria Hervey, Prince Andrew‘s ex-wife, said Prince Harry is on the verge of being “exiled” from the Royal family, comparing him and Prince William to “Cain and Abel.”

The English model and socialite claimed to The Mirror that the Duke of Sussex is “self-sabotaging” his relationship with his brother, the Prince of Wales.

The father-of-two has been estranged from William for a “while,” and their relationship was strained further when he wrote in Spare that his older brother physically assaulted him over an argument about Meghan Markle.

“I think Prince Harry is self-sabotaging his relationship with his brother so much so that it has now become Cain and Abel,” Lady Victoria said.

“It’s becoming a bit of a blood sport. Harry is getting himself closer and closer to being exiled. I think he’s only one or two steps away from that happening,” she added.

The model commented on Harry playing the victim in his feud with the Royal family, saying, “I think he’s pushing the line as much as possible so that happens and he can wallow in Victimhood.”

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle chose a ‘isolationist’ path

Prince Harry
  • Prince Harry and Meghan Markle may face social isolation.
  • Royal author believes, royal couple will follow in the footsteps of Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson.
  • Wallis Simpson, a two-time divorcee, met and fell in love with King Edward VIII.

After stepping down from royal duties in March 2020, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle may face social isolation.

According to the report, royal author Nicholas Owen believes the royal couple will follow in the footsteps of Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson.

“The way they burst onto the scene with the famous Oprah Winfrey interview, but once the initial excitement wears off. “They’re going to have to work a little harder to get an invitation,” he admitted.

“A bit of a sad thing. It’s a terrible reminder of times past when Edward VIII left the throne back in the 1930s because he married an American divorcee. Gradually, the big invitations petered out and they were left rather isolated and I’m afraid the same thing seems to be happening again,” he explained.

According to sources, Wallis Simpson, a two-time divorcee, met and fell in love with King Edward VIII, which resulted in mass scrutiny and a media berating that led to their eventual exit from England and royal duties. In the early 1930s, the two met and became friends. Wallis was married to Ernest Simpson at the time, and Prince Edward was the heir apparent.

Edward ascends to the throne in 1936 and 1937, before Wallis files for divorce. The prime minister and his family were informed of King Edward VIII’s feelings for her. He chooses to abdicate the throne in her honour. They married on June 3rd, 1937, at the Château de Candé, in a small ceremony with no family present, according to the outlet.

“I can confirm The Duke has recently received email correspondence from His Majesty’s office regarding the Coronation,” a spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess said over the weekend.

Meghan and Harry’s representative added that the couple would not immediately reveal whether or not they would attend the event.

UN Secretary-General warns, Gender equality will take 300 years

United Nation
  • Progress towards gender equality is “disappearing before our eyes”.
  • UN Women is the UN organisation dedicated to gender equality and women’s empowerment.
  • High rates of maternal mortality, girls being forced into early marriage.

Progress towards gender equality is “disappearing before our eyes,” UN Secretary General António Guterres said Monday at the Commission on the Status of Women.

Speaking to a key UN women’s rights group ahead of International Women’s Day on March 8, Guterres stated that gender equality is “300 years away,” according to the most recent UN Women estimates. UN Women is the UN organisation dedicated to gender equality and women’s empowerment.

High rates of maternal mortality, girls being forced into early marriage, and girls being kidnapped and assaulted for attending school were cited by Guterres as evidence that the goal of gender equality “is growing more distant.”

Guterres did not mention Iran in his speech, despite the fact that the country was kicked off the 45-member commission in December following protests over the death of Mahsa Amini in the custody of the country’s so-called “morality police.”

“Women’s rights are being abused, threatened, and violated around the world,” Guterres said, naming a few countries in particular, including Afghanistan, where he said “women and girls have been erased from public life.”

On Monday, young Afghan women gathered outside Kabul University to protest the ruling Taliban’s ban on female education, which a new UN report claims is a “crime against humanity.”

The report, which was presented to the Human Rights Council in Geneva on Monday, also noted an increase in forced and child marriages, a ban on women entering other public spaces such as parks and gyms, and other restrictions limiting women’s ability to work and travel independently in Afghanistan.

According to Guterres, the deputy secretary-general and executive director of UN Women recently visited Afghanistan and told Taliban officials that “we will never give up fighting for” women and girls.

“Crisis and conflict affect women and girls first and worst,” Guterres said, citing the conflict in Ukraine as an example. Following Russia’s invasion, the UN called for an investigation into reports of rape and sexual violence against Ukrainian women and children.

Guterres also stated that “women’s sexual and reproductive rights are being rolled back in many places,” though he did not specify where.

The United States Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June, leaving abortion rights to individual states. A ban on abortions due to foetal defects went into effect in Poland the previous year, effectively ending almost all abortions in the country.

Guterres called for “collective” and “urgent” action to achieve gender equality, ranging from increasing education, income, and employment for women and girls, particularly in developing countries in the Global South, to encouraging women and girls to participate in science and technology.

“Centuries of patriarchy, discrimination and harmful stereotypes have created a huge gender gap in science and technology,” Guterres said. “Let’s be clear: global frameworks are not working for the world’s women and girls. They need to change.”

Ukraine war: President Zelensky vows to track down killers

Ukraine
  • Ukraine has vowed to track down the Russian troops who allegedly killed an unarmed Ukrainian prisoner.
  • “We will find the murderers,” President Volodymyr Zelensky said late on Monday.
  • The Ukrainian soldier is seen in the video smoking a cigarette in a trench.

Ukraine has vowed to track down the Russian troops who allegedly killed an unarmed Ukrainian prisoner of war after video of the incident surfaced online.

“We will find the murderers,” President Volodymyr Zelensky said late on Monday.

Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba demanded that the International Criminal Court conduct a “immediate investigation” into the case.

The Ukrainian soldier is seen in the video smoking a cigarette in a trench. He declares “glory to Ukraine” before being shot with automatic weapons.

One of the Russian soldiers, who is not seen in the video, is then heard saying “die” and expletives.

The report has not confirmed where or when the footage was shot. On Monday, it first surfaced on social media.

Although neither the Ukrainian POW nor the killers have been identified, the report has learned that he was a member of the 30 Brigade.

Russia has not responded.

Since President Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, Kiev and its Western allies have accused Russian troops of committing mass war crimes. The allegations are denied by Russia.

President Zelensky said in his video address that “the occupiers” killed “a warrior who bravely said to their faces: ‘Glory to Ukraine!'”

“I want us all to respond to his words together, in unity: ‘Glory to the Hero! Glory to the Heroes! Glory to Ukraine!'”

Mr Zelensky was referring to a military battle cry that has become popular among millions of Ukrainians.

Meanwhile, Mr Kuleba tweeted that the footage was “another proof this was is genocidal”.

Dmytro Lubinets, Ukraine’s human rights ombudsman, accused Russian troops of committing war crimes by violating the Geneva Conventions on the treatment of prisoners of war.

Andriy Kostin, Ukraine’s Prosecutor General, said a criminal investigation had already been launched.

Ukrainian troops have previously been accused of torturing, raping, and killing Ukrainian prisoners of war.

In July of last year, a video surfaced showing a captured Ukrainian soldier being castrated in the Russian-occupied Donbas region of eastern Ukraine.

The Russian soldier filmed carrying out the attack in Severodonetsk was identified as a member of Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov’s unit.

Japan’s new rocket fails its first launch

Japan
  • The first launch of Japan’s new flagship space rocket failed on Tuesday.
  • According to a public broadcaster , the H3 rocket’s second stage did not ignite.
  • The H3 has been billed as the successor to Japan’s H-2A and H-2B rockets.

The first launch of Japan‘s new flagship space rocket failed on Tuesday when controllers issued a destruct command just 15 minutes after liftoff, according to the country’s space agency.

“A destruct command has been transmitted to H3 around 10:52 a.m. (Japan Standard Time), because there was no possibility of achieving the mission,” a statement from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) said.

According to a public broadcaster , the H3 rocket’s second stage did not ignite.

The rocket lifted off from the Tanegashima Space Center in southern Japan, carrying the Advance Land Observation Satellite-3 (ALOS-3), a ground-mapping and imaging orbiter described by the space agency as a key tool in disaster management efforts.

ALOS-3 “would cover all of the land areas of not only Japan but also across the whole world,” it said.

The failure on Tuesday occurred during JAXA’s second attempt to launch the H3. On February 17, two secondary booster engines strapped to the spacecraft’s side failed to ignite on the launch pad, resulting in the H3’s failure to take off.

The H3 has been billed as the successor to Japan’s H-2A and H-2B rockets, with adaptable configurations based on what it needs to lift into orbit. It has previously emphasized the H3’s expected ability to launch both government and commercial missions.

The H3 will be less expensive than many other launch vehicles, according to JAXA, because it will use “commercial-off-the-shelf products of other domestic industries such as the automobile industry rather than products exclusive to space use.”

“With several configurations, the H3 offers performance and price suitable for the purposes of each satellite,” it said, adding that it hoped to launch satellites on a regular basis in the long term.

“With several configurations, the H3 offers performance and price suitable for purposes of each satellite,” it said, adding that it was looking for regular launches over the long term.

“We are aiming to create an operational world where Japanese industrial base can be underpinned by steadily launching the H3 six times or so annually for 20 years,” JAXA said.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries is the rocket’s prime contractor. According to reports, JAXA and Mitsubishi have invested over $1.5 billion in the project since its inception nine years ago.

US-China relations have deteriorated significantly

China
  • China’s foreign minister has stated that US-China relations have “seriously deviated”.
  • Mr Qin held his first press conference as foreign minister.
  • He also said the diplomatic crisis caused by the balloon incident could have been averted.

China’s foreign minister has stated that US-China relations have “seriously deviated,” while also threatening conflict.

“Containment and suppression will not make America great. It will not stop the rejuvenation of China,” said Qin Gang.

On Tuesday, Mr Qin, China‘s former ambassador to the United States, held his first press conference as foreign minister.

Despite recent efforts to improve relations, the spy balloon saga has heightened tensions between the superpowers.

“It [the US] regards China as its primary rival and the most consequential geopolitical challenge. This is like the first button in the shirt being put wrong,” Mr Qin said.

The foreign minister was responding to a question about whether a healthy US-China relationship was still possible as the two countries’ differences grew.

The US has called for “guardrails,” but what it really wants is for China not to respond with words or actions when provoked, according to Mr Qin.

He was referring to US President Joe Biden’s comments last month that the US would “compete fully with China but [is] not looking conflict”.

Mr Qin said: “If the US does not put on the brakes and continues to roar down the wrong road, no amount of guardrails can stop the derailment and overturning, and it is bound to fall into conflict and confrontation. Who will bear its disastrous consequences?”

He also said the diplomatic crisis caused by the balloon incident could have been averted but the US acted with “the presumption of guilt”.

The suspected spy balloon was previously described as a “clear violation of US sovereignty” by Washington. Beijing acknowledged ownership of the object, but claimed it was a civilian airship that had been blown off course.

Mr Qin claimed that the Ukraine crisis was being driven by a “invisible hand,” but he did not name any country or individual. He reiterated that China had not supplied weapons to either side of the Russia-Ukraine conflict and called for the resumption of peace talks.

“Why should the US demand that China refrain from supplying arms to Russia when it sells arms to Taiwan?” he asked.

The Ukraine crisis has reached a “critical juncture,” according to him.

“Either a ceasefire will stop the war, restore peace and embark on a political settlement, or fuel the fire, expand the crisis and drag it into the abyss of losing control.”

Mr Qin, 56, was appointed China’s foreign minister in December 2022, making him one of the country’s youngest foreign ministers. He took over for Wang Yi, who was promoted to the ruling Communist Party’s politburo in October of that year.

Mr Qin, a trusted aide to Chinese President Xi Jinping, is known as a tough-talking diplomat.

Mexico: Over 340 migrants discovered in a truck trailer

Mexico
  • Mexican authorities discovered over 340 people including 103 unaccompanied minors.
  • Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, and Ecuador were among the countries represented by the migrants.
  • Everyone appeared to be unharmed, and the trailer had fans and ventilation ports.

Mexican authorities discovered over 340 people, including 103 unaccompanied minors, in an abandoned truck trailer in the state of Veracruz.

Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, and Ecuador were among the countries represented by the migrants. It is one of the most recent and significant discoveries of migrant children travelling through Mexico.

According to officials, everyone appeared to be unharmed, and the trailer had fans and ventilation ports.

The location of the driver is unknown.

Many undocumented migrants fleeing poverty and violence in Central America end up paying large sums of money to people smugglers to cross the US border.

Last year, 53 migrants were discovered dead in an abandoned truck trailer in Texas, the United States.

According to Mexico’s National Migration Institute (INM), 343 people were discovered in the vehicle on Sunday night.

They were discovered on a common route used by migrants to reach the US border.

According to officials, the migrants wore color-coded bracelets to identify themselves as clients of smugglers.

Plastic bottles and trash were strewn across the trailer’s floor, according to an image.

Mexican social services will care for the migrants until their legal status is determined.

According to border patrol data obtained by a channel in October, at least 853 migrants died in the previous year while attempting to illegally cross the US-Mexico border.

This made the fiscal year 2022 the deadliest year for migrants in US history, far exceeding the previous record of 546 migrant deaths in 2021.

During the same time period, the US Border Patrol apprehended a record 2.2 million migrants at the southwest border.

Ukraine war: Bakhmut defenders redouble their efforts

Ukraine
  • Western analysts speculated over the weekend that Ukraine was likely withdrawing some of its troops.
  • The head of the Wagner private army has complained about a lack of ammunition
  • Moscow has been attempting to take Bakhmut for months.

Ukraine President Ukraine has stated that operations to defend the besieged eastern city of Bakhmut will continue and will be supported by senior generals.

As Russian forces close in on the city, Western analysts speculated over the weekend that Ukraine was likely withdrawing some of its troops.

Moscow has been attempting to take Bakhmut for months, despite heavy losses on both sides in a grinding war of attrition

According to a local official, there has been street fighting in recent days.

But, according to Deputy Mayor Oleksandr Marchenko, Russia has not yet taken control of the city.

Meanwhile, the head of the Wagner private army involved in the Russian campaign, Yevgeny Prigozhin, has complained about a lack of ammunition amid apparent friction between his fighters and regular Russian forces.

He also claims that his representative was barred from entering a Russian military headquarters.

According to analysts, Bakhmut has little strategic value but has become a focal point for Russian commanders who have struggled to bring positive news to the Kremlin.

Capturing the city would bring Russia one step closer to gaining control of the entire Donetsk region, one of four regions in eastern and southern Ukraine that Russia annexed last September after sham referendums widely condemned outside Russia.

In his evening address, Mr Zelensky stated that he had discussed Bakhmut with senior generals.

“[They] responded not to withdraw, but to strengthen [our defences],” he said.

“The command unanimously supported this position. There were no other positions. I told the commander in chief to find the appropriate forces to help our guys in Bakhmut.”

The remarks came after the German newspaper Bild reported, citing Ukrainian government sources, that armed forces commander Valery Zaluzhny had disagreed with Mr Zelensky about the operation several weeks ago, recommending a withdrawal from the city.

According to the paper, the majority of defenders agreed with Gen Zaluzhny.

The Institute for the Study of War (ISW), a US-based think tank, said over the weekend that Ukrainian troops were likely conducting a “limited fighting withdrawal” while “continuing to inflict high casualties” on the Russians.

he fighting in Bakhmut had reached the “highest level of tension,” according to ground forces commander Olexandr Syrsky, who was quoted in the Ukrainska Pravda newspaper on Sunday during a visit to the front line.

“The enemy has been throwing extra Wagner forces into the battle,” he said. “Our troops have been courageously defending our positions in the north of Bakhmut, trying to prevent the encirclement of the city.”
