After stepping down from royal duties in March 2020, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle may face social isolation.
According to the report, royal author Nicholas Owen believes the royal couple will follow in the footsteps of Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson.
“The way they burst onto the scene with the famous Oprah Winfrey interview, but once the initial excitement wears off. “They’re going to have to work a little harder to get an invitation,” he admitted.
“A bit of a sad thing. It’s a terrible reminder of times past when Edward VIII left the throne back in the 1930s because he married an American divorcee. Gradually, the big invitations petered out and they were left rather isolated and I’m afraid the same thing seems to be happening again,” he explained.
According to sources, Wallis Simpson, a two-time divorcee, met and fell in love with King Edward VIII, which resulted in mass scrutiny and a media berating that led to their eventual exit from England and royal duties. In the early 1930s, the two met and became friends. Wallis was married to Ernest Simpson at the time, and Prince Edward was the heir apparent.
Edward ascends to the throne in 1936 and 1937, before Wallis files for divorce. The prime minister and his family were informed of King Edward VIII’s feelings for her. He chooses to abdicate the throne in her honour. They married on June 3rd, 1937, at the Château de Candé, in a small ceremony with no family present, according to the outlet.
“I can confirm The Duke has recently received email correspondence from His Majesty’s office regarding the Coronation,” a spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess said over the weekend.
Meghan and Harry’s representative added that the couple would not immediately reveal whether or not they would attend the event.
