PM Shehbaz given vice-chairman status for COP27 conference

PM vice-chairmain for COP27

ISLAMABAD: The United Nations Climate Change Conference – COP27, has announced to handover of the vice-chairmanship of the conference to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Among the 195 countries of the United Nations, Pakistan has received the honor as a result of the effective voice raised by PM Shehbaz Sharif at global and regional forums, regarding the need for an urgent climate action plan.

Egypt’s President Abdul Fattah Al-Sisi has invited Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to co-chair the COP-27 meeting.

PM Sharif will jointly chair the roundtable conference along with the president of Egypt and the prime minister of Norway, being held in Egypt’s Sharm-el-Sheikh from November 6-8.

The meeting will be attended by world leaders, think tanks, and the heads of governments and international financial institutions.

This will be the 27th meeting organized by the United Nations regarding the problems of climate change and the need for sustainable solutions.

Following the recent floods in Pakistan, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif effectively voiced immediate action on climate change, at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Council of Heads of State and Government, Samarkand, and the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly, New York.

The prime minister’s proposal for global cooperation in addressing the challenge of climate change had received endorsement by several countries.

PM Sharif, soon after the heavy downpour in Sindh and Balochistan that threatened to turn into devastating floods, galvanized the federal government and all relevant institutions to immediately gear up for rescue and relief operations.

He also visited the affected areas on a daily basis to ensure that food, medicine, and relief goods were being dispatched to these areas.

Shehbaz Sharif, in all his pronouncements at home and in his exchanges with foreign leaders, highlighted the unprecedented nature of the colossal loss from the floods.

Consequently, the devastation in Pakistan received huge coverage in the international media and also resulted in highly supportive messages from global leaders and heads of international organizations.

The friendly countries including China, Turkey, and the Arab nations responded within no time to announce their support and solidarity with the Pakistanis in their hour of distress in the shape of the provision of assistance packages.

As PM Sharif ensured that the world’s response to Pakistan’s losses remained substantial, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres visited Pakistan to personally oversee the scale of damages and assess the country’s post-flood requirements.

This helped greatly in sending a powerful message to the international community as Pakistan suffered on an unprecedented scale.

Notwithstanding his desire to stay in the country and visit the flood-affected areas on a daily basis, Shehbaz Sharif took the decision to travel to Samarkand for the SCO meeting so as to use highlight the issue of climate change in all his sideline as well as in his address at the Summit.

Also, during his interactions at the UNGA, the prime minister highlighted the issue of climate change in general and the devastating floods in Pakistan in particular. The prime minister on the occasion galvanized global opinion in favour of meaningful initiatives that needed to be taken by the developed countries.

The prime minister, at the international forums, highlighted the need for a fresh charter of global understanding to assist all those countries that were vulnerable to the adverse effects of global climate change.

It was during his meeting with French President Macron in New York that the latter informed the prime minister that he had been so moved by the suffering of the people of Pakistan and would be willing to take a lead in organizing a global conference to determine Pakistan’s long-term rehabilitation and reconstruction, in the flood affected areas.

The upcoming COP27 will be another important opportunity for the prime minister to highlight this issue.

The Conference will be yet another opportunity for the prime minister to urge developed countries to abide by the provisions of the Paris Agreement 2015, in which the industrialized countries had committed to mobilizing $100 billion per year.

This year, Pakistan is chairing the Group of 77 and China, an influential bloc of 134 developing states. In its deliberations, the government intends to pitch establishing a ‘loss and damage’ financial facility for those countries which are most vulnerable to climate change.

According to the details, the case was heard by Senior Civil Judge Ghulam Akbar.

During today’s hearing, the Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) court urged the anti-graft monitoring team to continue their efforts to apprehend the minister and bring him before the court.

Musaddiq Abbasi, the anti-corruption advisor to Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervez Elahi, stated that Rana Sanaullah was found guilty in the corruption case against him.

During a press conference at Punjab’s Directorate-General Public Relations(DGPR), Abbasi stated that the interior minister had been accused of accepting bribes in the shape of plots and had been called by ACE in October.

On behalf of the petitioner Asad Umar, Advocate Babar Awan. appeared in the court.

“How is the petitioner Asad Umar affected by Section 144? Did anyone stop petitioner Asad Umar from seeking permission for a peaceful protest?” the Chief Justice of the IHC asked the lawyer.

“This party has the government in two provinces. Has section 144 ever been implemented there? ” CJ asked.

Athar Minallah said that the matter of law and order is to be looked after by the executive, in which the court will never interfere.

Lawyer Babar Awan replied that Asad Umar is the leader of PTI.

The Chief Justice said that in the sit-in case, the Supreme Court has decided that permission must be obtained for a peaceful protest.

“It is not a request from a political party but a former MNA,” lawyer Asad Umar replied.

“This is not a request of a former member of the Assembly; the petitioner is still a member of the National Assembly,” the Chief Justice said.

Lawyer Babar Awan said I could not disagree with you, but I can make corrections.

Athar Manullah said that until the resignation is accepted, he is a member of the assembly. “This party has a government in Punjab and KPK. You should first go to these provinces and get this law removed from the assembly. Abolish the law from the provincial assemblies and come here, “he added.

Imposing lifetime ban through Article 62(1)(f) is oppressive law: CJ

Article 62(1)(f) is oppressive law

ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice Umer Ata Bandial called Article 62(1)(f) of the Constitution, which prohibits politicians from holding public office for life, a “draconian” rule on Tuesday.

The chief judge made these comments while hearing a petition filed by PTI leader Faisal Vawda challenging his lifelong ban in a case involving the submission of a fraudulent affidavit concerning his US citizenship.
The case was heard today by a three-judge bench of the Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice Umer Ata Bandial.

In February, PTI’s Faisal Vawda petitioned the Supreme Court under Article 185(3) of the Constitution for leave to appeal against the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) order dated February 9 and the Islamabad High Court judgment dated February 16.

Vawda has argued that the ECP order and the IHC verdict are arbitrary, without legitimate power, and have no legal impact, as well as being opposed to the Supreme Court’s rulings.

He petitioned the court to vacate the ECP and IHC orders.

The PTI leader argued in his appeal that the ECP had given no grounds for invoking Article 62(1)(f) to disqualify him for life. The electoral commission appears to believe that anyone who is disqualified under Article 63(1)(c) – for having dual nationality — will immediately be fined under Article 62(1). (f).

When the Supreme Court took up the matter today, Vawda’s lawyer, Waseem Sajjad, stated that his client ran for office in 2018 and that two years later, a petition was filed in the high court seeking his disqualification.

The CJP responded by saying that the ECP can investigate a fake affidavit submission and that even if the Supreme Court reverses the order, the facts will stay the same.

“The Election Commission has thoroughly investigated the facts in Faisal Vawda’s case; the only question now is whether the ECP can order life disqualification or not.”
