WhatsApp rolls out Advanced Search Mode for its Android beta testers

WhatsApp Advanced Search Mode

One of the most popular messaging apps, WhatsApp usually rolls out numerous exciting features for the convenience of its users. The messaging app recently rolled out the Advanced Search Mode for its Android beta testers.

The feature has been in the works for the longest time but WhatsApp wants to fix all the bugs before rolling it out officially for all users.

As per Wabetainfo, the Android beta users will have access to WhatsApp version to 2.20.197.7+ on Play Store in order to use the Advanced search mode feature. The feature was earlier rolled out to iOS beta testers and some of the Android beta users.

Some users had complained of not getting the feature even after updating their WhatsApp to the latest version.

“WhatsApp is finally rolling out, for certain beta testers, the Advanced Search Mode! Why certain beta testers? WhatsApp is actually enabling, from server-side, the feature for a few beta testers. This type of activation is partial and very slow: this happens when a company decides to gradually enable a feature to see the effects of it when enabled (crashes, bugs). In these situations it’s better to enable the feature for a few users rather than everyone,” the Wabetainfo report read.

However, the Advance Search Mode let users search for images, videos, files, GIFs, audio, links, etc in the search bar that is provided on the app.

The feature is still being developed by the company and it is being rolled out for testers gradually.

On the other hand, WhatsApp apart from the Advanced Search Mode, has been long-speculated to be working on the multi-device support. As the name suggests, the new feature would let users log in to up to five devices using a single account. For instance, if you want to use WhatsApp on your iPhone and iPad simultaneously, you can do so without logging out from one of the devices.

Furthermore, WhatsApp is also working on backing up the chat history. The feature is still under development and can only be accessed by beta testers.

WhatsApp adds new feature to fact-check forwarded messages

WhatsApp forward messages limitation

WhatsApp, after years-long efforts, has announced a new feature that will allow users to search the web for more info about frequently forwarded messages.

Messages forwarded more than five times already labelled with a double arrow icon. Now, a magnifying glass will appear next to those messages too. If a user clicks the magnifying glass, their browser will open to news results or other info about the content they received. To maintain privacy, WhatsApp will never see the message itself.

However, the feature rolled out today in Brazil, Italy, Ireland, Mexico, Spain, the UK and the US — users will need the latest version of WhatsApp for Android, iOS or WhatsApp Web.

In 2019, after misinformation spread on WhatsApp led to violence in India, WhatsApp lowered the message forwarding limit to just five groups of users.

Earlier in 2020, WhatsApp said it saw a “significant increase” in forwarded messages. In response, it imposed even stricter limits. Now, frequently forwarded messages can only be forwarded to one chat at a time.

Moreover, these steps could encourage users to fact-check messages before they believe them or pass them on. It’s also another way for WhatsApp to curb fake news without actually reviewing messages, so the platform is able to maintain its promises of end-to-end encryption.
