Human Rights Violation: World bodies want EU to put pressure on India

Human rights bodies have appealed the European Union to highlight the increasing Human Rights Violation in India during its scheduled summit with the Indian leaders.

According to the details, European leaders will hold a summit on May 8, 2021, with Indian leaders.

Ahead of the summit, Human Rights Watch has released a statement in which it has asked the European leaders to press the Indian government to reverse its abusive and discriminatory policies and immediately release all human rights activists.

The statement said the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party-led government has increasingly harassed, intimidated, and arbitrarily arrested human rights defenders, journalists, peaceful protesters, and other critics, under draconian sedition and counterterrorism laws.

The rights bodies’ group said the Indian government has imposed harsh and discriminatory restrictions on Muslim-majority areas in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir since revoking the state’s constitutional status in August 2019.

PM Modi receives first dose of COVID-19 vaccine as India widens immunization drive

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has on Monday received the first jab of the COVID-19 vaccine as the country opened its immunization programme.

Taking to his Twitter handle, Modi posted a picture of him getting shot at a government hospital in New Delhi.

“Took my first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine at AIIMS. Remarkable how our doctors and scientists have worked in quick time to strengthen the global fight against COVID-19,” he wrote.

The premier further added appealed his country-men to help make India CVOID-19 free.

“I appeal to all those who are eligible to take the vaccine. Together, let us make India COVID-19 free,” he added.

India, which has reported the highest number of Covid-19 cases in the world after the United States, has so far vaccinated more than 12 million health and front-line workers.

However, people above 60, and those who are 45 or more and suffering from certain medical conditions, are now eligible for the vaccinations.

The country has launched its vaccination drive on January 16, but it was limited to healthcare workers and frontline staff.

State-run hospitals will offer free jabs but people can also pay at private facilities to get vaccinated.

Since the pandemic began, India has reported more than 11 million coronavirus infections and over 157,000 deaths.

Much of India has reported a sharp fall in cases recently – with daily infections for the county falling to less than 20,000 from a peak of over 90,000 in September.

Tens of thousands of people evacuated to shelters on Wednesday to escape a cyclone barreling towards southern India.

According to officials, heavy rains lashed the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu as it braces for Cyclone Nivar.

Rain has already felled trees and flooded much of the state capital, Chennai.

According to India’s meteorological department (IMD), the cyclone is expected to bring winds gusting up to 145 km/h.

All fishing boats advised to return to harbours. Thirty disaster response teams have been deployed across Tamil Nadu.

Moreover, the coast guard has deployed offshore patrol vehicles, helicopters and aircraft for assistance and surveillance.

On the other hand, senior IMD officials further informed tha the cyclone is intensifying and could cause structural damage, uprooting trees and crops, and even destroying thatched and tin-roofed houses when it strikes.

However, people also fear of flooding in Chennai. In Tamil Nadu, the state government has declared a public holiday and advised people to stay indoors. Buses, trains and flights remain suspended.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, saying that he had spoken with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, assuring him of all “possible support” from the federal government.

Earlier in 2015, widespread flooding in Chennai due to heavy rains and overflowing rivers brought the city to a standstill.
