Joe Biden being pushed to send more Covid-19 medical help to India

Afghanistan War: Biden Says He Has No Regrets Over Troop Withdrawals

After the US President Joe Biden announced that the US will allocate 75% – nearly 1.9 crore of the first tranche of 2.5 crore doses – of unused Covid-19 vaccines from its stockpile to countries in South and Southeast Asia as well as Africa by the end of June, American lawmakers called on the US government to send more vaccines and medical assistance to India.

As part of his administration’s strategy for distributing 80 million (8 crores) vaccines globally, Biden stated the US will share the vaccine with several countries to fight the epidemic through the UN-backed COVAX global vaccine sharing program.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott said, “The crisis in India is devastating and demands more action from (President Joe) Biden. More Covid-19 vaccines and medical supplies are needed to help one of our most important global allies fight this virus,”

Senator Ted Cruz, a Republican, stated that about 300 million doses of Covid-19 vaccination have been provided in the United States.

“India is a critical friend of the US. Biden’s vaccine sharing programme is flawed: We should prioritise our allies such as India, and make sure it receives the Covid-19 vaccines they desperately need,” he said.

Hill, who is a member of the House Financial Services Committee said, “The situation in India, one of our closest allies, is dire. I encourage the Biden administration to support India with vaccines in their time of need,”

Congressman August Pfluger said, “We should immediately send additional vaccines and critical medical supplies,”

India reported 1,00,636 fresh Covid-19 cases on Monday, the lowest in 61 days, taking the infection tally to 2,89,09,975, according to the Union Health Ministry’s latest data. The death toll due to coronavirus reached 3,49,186 with 2,427 new fatalities, the lowest in around 45 days.

PM Modi receives first dose of COVID-19 vaccine as India widens immunization drive

COVID-19

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has on Monday received the first jab of the COVID-19 vaccine as the country opened its immunization programme.

Taking to his Twitter handle, Modi posted a picture of him getting shot at a government hospital in New Delhi.

“Took my first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine at AIIMS. Remarkable how our doctors and scientists have worked in quick time to strengthen the global fight against COVID-19,” he wrote.

The premier further added appealed his country-men to help make India CVOID-19 free.

“I appeal to all those who are eligible to take the vaccine. Together, let us make India COVID-19 free,” he added.

India, which has reported the highest number of Covid-19 cases in the world after the United States, has so far vaccinated more than 12 million health and front-line workers.

However, people above 60, and those who are 45 or more and suffering from certain medical conditions, are now eligible for the vaccinations.

The country has launched its vaccination drive on January 16, but it was limited to healthcare workers and frontline staff.

State-run hospitals will offer free jabs but people can also pay at private facilities to get vaccinated.

Since the pandemic began, India has reported more than 11 million coronavirus infections and over 157,000 deaths.

Much of India has reported a sharp fall in cases recently – with daily infections for the county falling to less than 20,000 from a peak of over 90,000 in September.

Taj Mahal reopens after 6 months despite surge in COVID-19 cases

Taj Mahal reopens

As India is witnessing record spike in Coronavirus cases, even though The Taj Mahal reopens to visitors divided into two slots on Monday.

The world-famous Taj Mahal in the city of Agra south of New Delhi is India’s most popular tourist site. It usually draws seven million visitors a year.

According to officials, when it reopens, strict social distancing rules will be imposed and daily visitor numbers will be capped at 5,000. Tickets can only be bought online.

India has recorded more than 5.4 million COVID-19 cases. Around 100,000 new infections and over 1,000 deaths are reported daily.

But after a strict lockdown in March, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is reluctant to copy some other nations and tighten the screw on activity again.

Instead in recent months his government has eased more and more restrictions including on many train routes, domestic flights, markets, restaurants — and now, visiting the Taj Mahal.

“Circles are being marked, the mask would be a must and nobody would be able to enter without thermal screening”, a senior archaeologist in charge of Agra’s monuments, told.

Schools were meant to resume Monday on a voluntary basis for students aged 14 to 17, but many Indian states such as Maharashtra and Gujarat have said it is still too soon.

“Cases are still increasing rapidly… I have no idea how we can reopen educational institutions now,” West Bengal’s education minister Partha Chatterjee said.

Elsewhere schools are refusing to open or parents are wary of sending their children in.
