  • The Oscars 2023 stage featured a live performance of Naatu Naatu.
  • It took place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
  • Deepika Padukone entered the stage to introduce Naatu Naatu’s performance.

The Oscars 2023 stage featured a live performance of the soundtrack song “Naatu Naatu” from Rajamouli’s RRR. Kaala Bhairava and Rahul Sipligunj, the song’s original vocalists, and the international dancers, notably Lauren Gottlieb, a former Jhalak Dikhlaa Jaa runner-up, brilliantly mimicked and timed the onscreen dancing of actors Ram Charan and N. T. Rama Rao Jr. (Jr NTR).

The 95th Academy Awards, which were hosted at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, had a similar event. Standing ovations were given during Naatu Naatu’s Oscar performance, marking another milestone for director SS Rajamouli and his crew. The Oscars presenter Deepika Padukone entered the stage to introduce this musical performance. Jimmy Kimmel, a comedian, hosted the Oscars in 2023.

When witnessing the performance at the Oscars in 2023, Priyanka Chopra applauded:

Deepika was a presenter at the event, but SS Rajamouli’s RRR gained popularity because Naatu Naatu is up for Best Original Music. Everything that Breathes by Shaunak Sen was up for Best Documentary Feature, but it didn’t win. Kartiki Gonsalves’ The Elephant Whisperers, which served as her feature film debut, received the Best Documentary Short Oscar. Definitely having major Oscar moments is India.

Oscars 2023: Lauren Gottlieb to represent India

Lauren Gottlieb
  • Lauren Gottlieb, an American dancer will perform to ‘Naatu Naatu’.
  • Lauren Gottlieb was a runner-up in the sixth season of ‘Jhalak Dikhlaa Jaa’.
  • She also shared how she trained the other dancers.

Lauren Gottlieb, an American dancer who finished second in the sixth season of ‘Jhalak Dikhlaa Jaa,’ will perform to ‘Naatu Naatu.’

Lauren Gottlieb, an American dancer who was a runner-up in the sixth season of ‘Jhalak Dikhlaa Jaa,’ is excited to perform on the song ‘Naatu Naatu,’ which has been nominated for an Academy Award as the lead female dancer in 2023.

Talking about the opportunity, Lauren shared: “I feel so grateful to have been given the opportunity to represent India on such a global platform. Oscars are one of the biggest stages in the world and for India to be represented in such a big way and get nominated is incredible.”

She further mentioned, “The fact that I have been chosen to be the lead female dancer and connect Bollywood and Hollywood, both the closest things to my heart, is surreal. I feel a big sense of responsibility to make sure the piece is authentic and makes India proud.”

Lauren Gottlieb insisted that she and her choreographers Napoleon and Tabitha D’umo are working hard to achieve the perfect balance between the crispness of the western stage and the freedom of India’s street style.

She added, “Before India ever happened for me, I had the opportunity to assist Napoleon and Tabitha on big production dance jobs in Hollywood. So it’s a huge homecoming moment for us. It’s been an incredible week sharing my knowledge of Indian dance and my experiences living in India with the entire cast.”

She continued, “I’ve been helping fine-tune the steps and I even convinced NappyTabs to have the two lead male dancers lip-sync the song. Earlier they thought it would be too difficult, but I said it’s Bollywood, so the lip-syncing has to be done.”

Lauren Gottlieb also shared how she trained the other dancers, “I have shown them Ranveer Singh and Allu Arjun‘s songs to get them to know the essence of Bollywood music. Bollywood is performed much larger than how we dance in the West. I even taught everyone how to do namaste and bow their heads after the performance. It makes me emotional knowing in just two days I will get to perform ‘Naatu Naatu’ on one of the most prestigious stages in the world.”

In a recent interview, Jr. NTR, who is in the US for the Oscars 2023 with Ram Charan and team RRR, stated that he and Ram will not be dancing to Naatu Naatu on stage. In the interview, Jr. NTR also mentioned the song’s performers, MM Keeravani, Rahul Sipligunj, and Kaala Bhairava. He continued by saying that India would also be walking down the red carpet at the forthcoming awards.

Junior NTR remarked, “I don’t think that’s happening,” when speaking with KTLA (him and Ram dancing to Naatu Naatu at the event). I eagerly anticipated it happening. But regrettably, we were unable to practice. We don’t want to be on the biggest platform in the world without being ready. Hence, we were busy. I was busy, and Charan may have been busy as well due to his numerous prior engagements at home. Thus, I don’t believe we will be performing; instead, the song will be sung by our music director (MM) Keeravani, Rahul (Sipligunj), and my brother (Kaala) Bhairava. I believe it will be enjoyable for me to watch the song from the audience because the moment I watch that clip, my legs have started aching all over again.”

MM Keeravani penned the song Naatu Naatu for the SS Rajamouli-directed historical drama RRR. It has been put forth for the upcoming Oscars’ Best Original Song category. RRR is the first Indian movie to be nominated for an Oscar Award in more than 20 years. The first Indian song to receive an Oscar nomination is Naatu Naatu.
