Saudi Arabia: 800,000 registered to perform Umrah in Ramadan

Around 800,000 Muslims from outside Saudi Arabia have so far registered for undertaking Umrah or lesser pilgrimage in the upcoming Ramadan, according to a Saudi official.

This week, Saudi Arabia announced that Umrah permits for Ramadan, which begins later this month, can be secured for Muslims both inside and outside the country through the Nusuk app.

“The number of those from outside the kingdom, who have registered on the Nusuk platform for the Ramadan Umrah, have reached nearly 800,000 until now,” Abdul Rahman Shams, the assistant undersecretary of the Ministry of Hajj for Umrah affairs, told Saudi television Al Ekhbariya.

The nusuk.sa platform allows Muslims who want to perform Umrah or visit holy sites to obtain the appropriate visas and permissions, as well as book-related packages, electronically.

Saudi Arabia anticipates the number of Umrah pilgrims to surpass 9 million by the end of Ramadan, which traditionally marks the pinnacle of the Umrah season.

Overseas Umrah permit candidates in Ramadan must have valid visas at the time of registration.

Saudi Arabia has recently revealed a series of amenities for Muslims seeking to do Umrah in the nation.

Visa Extended

The Umrah visa has also been extended from 30 days to 90 days, allowing holders to enter the kingdom via all land, air, and sea routes and depart from any airport.

Saudi Arabia has announced that its nationals can apply for visas to invite their friends from other countries to visit the kingdom and perform Umrah.

Saudi Arabia has also issued a transit visa that allows the holder to conduct Umrah, visit the Prophet’s Mosque, and attend various events within the kingdom.

The transit visa is valid for four days and is valid for 90 days.

The monarchy has also stated that GCC residents, regardless of occupation, are able to apply for a tourist visa, allowing them to do Umrah.

Millions of Muslims who cannot physically or financially afford the yearly Hajj rites travel to Saudi Arabia to do Umrah.

Saudi Arabia arrests 17,000 more illegals

Saudi police detained 17,092 illegal expatriates in a single week for breaking the kingdom’s residency, labor, and border security regulations as part of statewide campaigns, according to the Interior Ministry.

According to ministry estimates, the arrests were made between March 2 and 8, and included 9,875 offenders of the kingdom’s residency system, 4,784 violators of border security standards, and 2,433 others who violated labor regulations.

Others have been transported to their diplomatic posts to receive travel permits before being deported, while 12,375 other illegals have been deported from the kingdom. Over the same time period, authorities arrested 17 persons for transporting, hiding, and employing violators of residency, border, and work restrictions.

Saudi authorities have reported the arrest of many people suspected of supporting border infiltrators and violating the kingdom’s rules in recent months.

The Interior Ministry has repeatedly warned that those who facilitate the entry of infiltrators into the kingdom or provide them with transportation, shelter, or any other type of assistance face a maximum of 15 years in prison, a fine of up to SR1 million, confiscation of the means of transportation and accommodation, and naming and shaming. Saudi Arabia, a country of around 34.8 million inhabitants, has a sizable migrant workforce.

Saudi media has reported the arrest of tens of thousands of illegal expats in a crackdown on lawbreakers, citing weekly Interior Ministry tallies. Last Monday, the kingdom’s officials announced the arrest of roughly 14,000 such illegals.

The UAE was the first GCC country to abandon its two-day weekend system. The UAE Government implemented a new four-and-a-half-day working week on January 1, 2022, with Monday through Thursday workdays beginning at 7:30 a.m. and finishing at 3:30 p.m., and Friday workdays beginning at 7:30 a.m. and ending at 12 noon.

Meanwhile, Oman is rumored to be thinking about a three-day weekend. According to a Ministry of Labour official, the decision on this matter is under the competence of the Council of Ministers, and there is no opposition to analyzing and discussing this idea.

Pakistani community mark Quaid Day in Riyadh

The Pakistani community honored the birthday of the Father of the Nation, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah.

The event was held by Khayyam Akbar, the Minister and Deputy Head of Mission of Pakistan in the Kingdom, and attended by a big audience of Riyadh’s Pakistani community members at Al Hayat restaurant banquette hall east of Riyadh.

The event began with a drama about the hardship of Pakistanis since their independence until today. It emphasized that the principle of unity, faith, and discipline upon which leader Jinnah founded his idea for the founding of Pakistan should be the solution to the country’s current issues.

The play was followed by a speech by the Pakistani diplomat, Akbar. “Quaid-e-Azam, Jinnah, from nowhere, and in a most difficult situation, not only managed to bring the Muslims of the subcontinent together but also succeeded in making sure that a separate homeland for them became a reality,” he said.

“We should be always thankful for this and work as a nation to continue our efforts without having any feeling of hopelessness toward the challenges facing us today,” he added.

Akbar urged the 1.5 million Pakistanis living in the Kingdom to serve as ambassadors for their country and work diligently alongside their Saudi neighbors. He asked them to continue contributing to the Kingdom’s progress.

Abdul Malik Mujahid, an Islamic scholar and the operation manager of Riyadh-based Darussalam Publishers, which translated the Holy Qur’an into around 25 languages, provided data on Jinnah’s life and described him as a man of action rather than talk.

Following the talks, a short film about Pakistan’s primary difficulties, such as unmanned drone attacks on civilians, poverty, floods, religious fervor, sectarian bloodshed, political rivalry, and corruption, was presented.

The film also showed clips of some Pakistani leaders addressing the public and concluded by suggesting that the former cricket giant, Imran Khan, the founder and leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, could be the ideal leader at present to lead Pakistan in the footsteps of the Quaid.

Fawad Choudhary, President ISS, started his address by questioning the audience whether the Pakistani people were justifying what Pakistan was made for, in following the footsteps of the founder of the nation and exemplifying his principle of unity, faith, and discipline.

He said the people are directly responsible for what is happening in Pakistan in terms of corruption and injustice, stressed the importance of rising up, and stop compromising on the corruption of the leaders.

Choudhary appealed to the Pakistanis working in the Kingdom to contribute more to building the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as a fortress of Islam, a cause to that leader Jinnah devoted himself.

Saudi Arabia is looking to the US for security guarantees and assistance with its civilian nuclear program as a condition for normalizing relations with Israel, setting up a critical decision that could reshape the political situation in the Middle East.

The talks are still going on, and it’s unclear what the conditions of any agreement may look like if it comes to fruition.

Several members of Congress, who have called on the Biden administration to downgrade Washington’s ties with Riyadh, are expected to oppose increased security guarantees for Saudi Arabia.

Yet, President Joseph Biden has emphasized the necessity of restoring relations between Saudi Arabia and Israel, as has Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who believes that improving relations between the two countries can assist increase security in the Middle East. For several years, Israel and Saudi Arabia have maintained unofficial contacts but do not have official diplomatic relations.

‘Better for everybody’

“The better the relations between Israel and their Arab neighbors, the better for everybody,” Biden said Friday at the end of a speech about the economy.

“We’re going to keep that diplomacy going,” he said.

A request for comment was not returned by the State Department. The Israeli Embassy in Washington was unavailable for comment.

Excessive salt consumption can be the cause of death

In its initial study on reducing sodium intake, the World Health Organization (WHO) stated that excessive salt intake is one of the leading causes of death and disease worldwide. According to the analysis, the world is “off-track” to meet its goal of halving global sodium consumption by 2025.

One of the most important minerals for the body is sodium, but too much of it raises the risk of heart disease, stroke, and early death. While sodium (sodium chloride) is mostly found in table salt, it can also be found in other condiments like sodium glutamate.

According to the WHO’s global estimate, by 2030, the implementation of cost-effective salt reduction strategies might prevent the loss of 7 million lives worldwide.

Only nine nations, including Brazil, Chile, the Czech Republic, Lithuania, Malaysia, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Spain, and Uruguay, have an extensive set of suggested measures to lower sodium intake.

According to estimates, the average daily salt consumption across the globe is 10.8 grammes, more than twice the WHO recommendation of less than 5 grammes (one teaspoon).

Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director general of the WHO, said, “Unhealthy diets are a leading cause of death and disease globally, and excessive sodium intake is one of the main culprits. This report shows that most countries are yet to adopt any mandatory sodium reduction policies, leaving their people at risk of heart attack, stroke, and other health problems. WHO calls on all countries to implement the ‘Best Buys’ for sodium reduction, and on manufacturers to implement the WHO benchmarks for sodium content in food.”

The four “best buy” strategies recommended by the health organisation to lower salt levels may help prevent noncommunicable diseases include:

  • Reducing the salt content of foods and establishing goals for the quantity of sodium in meals and foods
  • Limiting salt or sodium-rich foods in public institutions like hospitals, schools, workplaces, and nursing homes through establishing public food procurement programmes
  • Front-of-package information that enables buyers to choose items with less sodium
  • Campaigns in the media and behaviour change communication to cut back on salt and sodium consumption

There is growing proof that consuming too much sodium increases the chance of developing other illnesses like obesity, renal disease, osteoporosis, and stomach cancer.

The plan, dubbed “from arrival to access,” focuses on the worshipper’s journey from arrival at the two holy sites to accessing services such as circling the Holy Kaaba in the Grand Mosque and walking between the two hills of Safa and Marwah, which are key rites of Umrah or lesser pilgrimage, as well as prayer and Itikaf (seclusion) areas.

“Besides, the plan takes care of monitoring and governance of all services to ensure their highest standards in the two Holy Haramein,” Al Sudais said.

According to him, the concept is intended to make the circumambulation ceremony around the Holy Kaaba easier for approximately 107,000 Umrah pilgrims per hour.

Ramadan, which begins in late March this year, is traditionally the busiest time for Umrah and is distinguished by fervent worship.

“The Ramadan operation plan is centered on field presence, holding laxity to account, providing a safe, healthy environment in the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque, diversifying initiatives, optimal utilization of artificial intelligence, and use of apps in different fields for serving the highest numbers of Umrah pilgrims and visitors,” he added.

Saudi Arabia has stated that there is no limit to the number of people who can perform Umrah or smaller pilgrimage in the kingdom, despite the fact that facilities are available for foreign Muslims to come and complete the rituals.

According to the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah, visitors, tourists, and workers who enter the kingdom on a visit, tourism, or labor visas can do Umrah and alter the mode of transportation used to leave the nation from the one used to enter Saudi Arabia.

The minister, on the other hand, asked Umrah pilgrims to adhere to the dates given in their licenses in order to conduct the rituals at Makkah’s Great Mosque.

Saudi Arabia has recently revealed a slew of amenities for Muslims seeking to do Umrah in the nation.

After reserving an e-appointment, Muslims with various sorts of entrance visas, such as personal, visit, and tourism visas, are permitted to do Umrah and visit Al Rawda Al Sharifa, where the tomb of the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) is located in the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina.

The Umrah visa has also been extended from 30 days to 90 days, allowing holders to enter the kingdom via all land, air, and sea routes and depart from any airport.

Saudi Arabia established a stopover transit visa this month, allowing holders to undertake Umrah, visit the Prophet’s Mosque, and attend various events across the kingdom.

The transit visa is valid for four days and is valid for 90 days.

Millions of Muslims who cannot physically or financially afford the Hajj rites travel to Saudi Arabia each year to perform Umrah.
