Japan and India conduct the first combined fighter jet exercise

Japan
  • India and Japan conducted their first combined fighter aircraft exercise.
  • Around 150 Indian Air Force troops are participating in the drill.
  • The two countries agreed to the practice during meetings.

Tokyo: Japan and India conducted their first combined fighter aircraft exercise near Tokyo on Monday as the countries strengthen their defence and security ties.

The 11-day bilateral exercise will feature eight Japanese fighter airplanes and four Indian fighters, two transport planes, and an aerial refueling tanker, according to Japan’s defence ministry.

Around 150 Indian Air Force troops are participating in the drill at the Hyakuri Air Base in Ibaraki prefecture, northeast of Tokyo.

The two countries agreed to the practice during meetings between Japanese and Indian defense and foreign ministers in 2019, but it was postponed because of the pandemic.

Japan and India, along with Australia and the United States, form the “Quad” alliance, a grouping of regional nations concerned about China’s military and economic clout.

In recent months, Tokyo has undertaken a series of joint military drills, as well as revamping its defence and security strategy and clearly voicing its concerns about China.

In December, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s administration pledged to double defense spending to 2% of GDP by 2027, labeling China the “biggest strategic challenge ever” to Japan’s security.

Last week, Japan signed a new defence treaty with the United Kingdom and agreed to broaden its mutual defence treaty with the United States to include space-based threats.

U.S. and Japan agreed to increase security cooperation amid china worries

Japan
  • The United States and Japan pledged to increase security cooperation.
  • Biden and Kishida are anticipated to address security issues and the global economy.
  • That five-year plan will double Japan’s defense spending to 2% of Gdp.

The United States and Japan pledged to increase security cooperation on Wednesday in response to shared concerns about China, and Washington strongly backed Tokyo’s significant military expansion announced last month.

The two countries “presented a vision of a modernized Alliance poised to prevail in a new era of strategic competition,” according to a joint statement issued during a meeting of their foreign and defence ministers in Washington.

“We all agree that the PRC is the largest shared strategic challenge that we, our friends, and partners face,” he added.

U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin revealed intentions to establish a Marine Littoral Regiment in Japan, bringing major capabilities such as anti-ship missiles. Blinken said that the two sides also agreed to extend the terms of their common defense treaty to cover space.

The joint statement said that given “a severely contested environment,” the forward posture of U.S. forces in Japan should be upgraded “by positioning more versatile, resilient, and mobile forces with increased intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance, anti-ship, and transportation capabilities.”

Biden and Kishida are anticipated to address security issues and the global economy, as well as regulation of semiconductor exports to China.

Although the total number of US troops in Japan would not change, the additional deployments could be the first of several announcements on military forces in Asia this year aimed at making Beijing think twice before starting a confrontation.

That five-year plan will double Japan’s defense spending to 2% of Gdp.

Asked about the Japanese reforms, Blinken said: “It’s very simple, we heartily welcome the new strategies.”

UK and Japan sign deal in London as Japan seeks to bolster ties

Japan
  • United kingdom and Japan have signed a new defence agreement.
  • The agreement also forms part of the UK’s Indo-Pacific tilt in foreign policy.
  • China criticized the move.

Japan and the United Kingdom have signed a “hugely significant” new defence agreement as Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida seeks to strengthen security ties with G7 partners in the wake of his country’s largest military buildup since World War II.

Kishida and Rishi Sunak, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, signed the agreement on Wednesday at the Tower of London, paving the way for the two countries to deploy forces on each other’s soil for training and other operations.

The signing of the reciprocal access defense agreement comes less than a month after the two countries collaborated with Italy on a new fighter jet program.

Kishida was in London as part of a tour of the Group of Seven countries, which includes France, Italy, Canada, and the United States.

Kishida was in London as part of a Group of Seven tours that also included France, Italy, Canada, and the USA.

Japan holds the G7 presidency and Kishida will host the group’s leaders for a summit in Hiroshima in May.

The Japan-UK agreement is the latest example of Tokyo’s efforts to fortify its alliances in the face of China’s “greatest strategic challenge ever” to its security.

The agreement also forms part of the UK’s Indo-Pacific tilt in foreign policy as it builds security and trade ties in the region.

Sunak’s office called Wednesday’s deal with Japan “the most significant defence agreement between the two countries in more than a century”.

“This Reciprocal Access Agreement is hugely significant for both of our countries; it cements our commitment to the Indo-Pacific and highlights our joint efforts to strengthen economic security,” Sunak said in a statement.

China, meanwhile, criticized the move, with foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin saying the Asia Pacific region was “not an arena for geopolitical games”. “China was a partner for cooperation and “not a challenge”.
