U.S. imposes new Covid rules on travellers from China: Officials

  • The U.S. administration may impose new Covid-19 measures on Chinese visitors.
  • Japan, India, and Malaysia have imposed stricter regulations for tourists from China.
  • China announced that it will no longer require arriving tourists to undergo quarantine.

Tuesday, U.S. officials indicated that the U.S. administration may impose new Covid-19 measures on Chinese visitors to the United States because of worries over the “lack of transparent data” coming from Beijing.

In the preceding twenty-four hours, Japan, India, and Malaysia have imposed stricter regulations for tourists from China, claiming an increase in illnesses there.

Japan has said that passengers from China must have a negative Covid-19 test upon arrival. Malaysia implemented supplementary tracking and monitoring measures.

“There are mounting concerns in the international community on the ongoing Covid-19 surges in China and the lack of transparent data, including viral genomic sequence data, being reported from the PRC,” the officials said, using the initials of the People’s Republic of China.

As the virus spreads mostly unchecked across the 1,4 billion-person nation of China, several hospitals and funeral homes have been inundated.

However, official figures revealed only one Covid-related death in the week preceding Monday, causing health professionals and people to question the government’s data. The estimates are inconsistent with the experience of countries with a significantly less population after they reopened.

China announced on Monday that, beginning on January 8, it will no longer require arriving tourists to undergo quarantine, a major step towards loosening restrictions at its borders, which have been largely closed since 2020.
