President to address parliament’s joint session on April 16

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari is scheduled to address the joint session of the parliament on April 16, to mark the beginning of the parliamentary year, following the general elections.

The joint session of the parliament will be held on Tuesday (April 16) at 1600 hours.

He would address the joint session in pursuance of Article 56 (3) of the Constitution which says, “At the commencement of the first session after each general election to the National Assembly and at the commencement of the first session of each year the President shall address both Houses assembled together and inform the Majlis-e-Shoora (Parliament) of the causes of its summons.”

President Zardari summoned the joint parliamentary session in exercise of the power conferred under Articles 54 (1) and 56(3) of the Constitution.

ISLAMABAD: Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Syed Asim Munir called on President Asif Ali Zardari, at the Presidency and apprised him about the ongoing Army operations against terrorism highlighting the operational preparedness against conventional threats.

In the meeting, the COAS extended felicitations on his appointment as the President of Pakistan and Commander in Chief of Armed Forces and conveyed his sincere wishes for a successful tenure.

The COAS also intimated about the contributions of the Army towards development initiatives, particularly in the regions of Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The president acknowledged the exemplary role of the Armed Forces of Pakistan, affirming that the Army’s contributions have been instrumental in safeguarding the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the state. The president emphasised Pakistan’s steadfast commitment against terrorism and reaffirmed the nation’s resolve to respond with full force through all elements of national power. He noted with grave concern the baseless and unsubstantiated allegations levelled by a specific political party and its few individuals against the institution and its leadership to accrue narrow political interests and resolved to deal with such disruptive elements with iron hand.

The president paid homage to the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the nation, emphasizing that their blood will forever symbolize the resilience and strength of the Pakistani nation. He reiterated the nation’s unwavering commitment to honouring the sacrifices of the Shuhadas and their families, holding them in the highest esteem.

President calls for further boosting bilateral cooperation with UK

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari said that Pakistan and the United Kingdom (UK) enjoy cordial relations, rooted in history and shared legacy, which have been reinforced by high-level interactions and people-to-people contacts over the years.

He stressed the need to further strengthen trade and economic ties for the mutual benefit of the two friendly countries.

The president expressed these views while talking to the British High Commissioner to Pakistan, Jane Marriott, who called on him, at Aiwan-e-Sadr.

Both sides exchanged views on matters of bilateral importance. During the meeting, the president expressed his warm sentiments for His Majesty King Charles III and the Princess of Wales, Catherine Middleton and wished them good health.

He also mentioned that the people of Pakistan held His Majesty the King in high esteem. Talking about the economic situation of the country, the president stated that the stabilization of the economy was the priority with a key focus on employment generation and poverty alleviation.

The president highlighted that climate change posed a serious challenge to Pakistan as it was among the most vulnerable countries to climate change.

He informed the High Commissioner that Sindh had mangrove forests, covering an area of 600,000 hectares, which supported the coastal ecosystem, besides contributing to environmental sustainability.

Today, we honour the commitment and sacrifices made by the Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah and his companions, who worked tirelessly towards transforming Allama Dr Muhammad Iqbal’s dream into reality.”

On the other hand, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said that being cognizant of the serious challenges confronting Pakistan, the incumbent government was committed to put Pakistan on the path to economic recovery and prosperity with a cogent policy reform framework.

“We are completely cognizant of the serious challenges confronting Pakistan currently including inflation, unemployment, circular debt, fiscal and trade deficit, and above all the growing scourge of terrorism,” the prime minister said in his message to the nation on Pakistan Day being observed on Saturday (March 23).

Felicitating Pakistanis at home or abroad, he said that as a nation, the Pakistanis had proved to be resilient in the face of extraordinary circumstances and stood the test of time.

He said that in the journey on the path of democracy, the people of Pakistan elected their representatives in the general elections held on 8th February and consequently the governments had been formed at the federal and provincial levels.

ISLAMABAD: The nation is celebrating Pakistan Day showing patriotic zeal and fervor, reaffirming the commitment to work hard for the development, stability, and unity of Pakistan.

This day is celebrated to commemorate the Lahore Resolution passed on March 23, 1940 and the adoption of the first Constitution of Pakistan on March 23, 1956 making Pakistan the world’s first Islamic Republic.

Pakistan Resolution was passed by the then Indian Muslim League, led by Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, at the Minar-e-Pakistan Lahore on 23 March 1940, that called for establishing an independent federation, to be named Pakistan, comprising provinces with a Muslim majority located in north-western and north-eastern regions of British-controlled territories in India.

The day dawned with a 31-gun salute in the federal capital and 21-gun salute in provincial capitals while special prayers were offered in mosques after Fajr prayers for the prosperity and solidarity of the country. The national flag was hoisted on major government buildings.

The main feature of the day is the grand military parade in Islamabad where contingents of three armed forces and other security forces conducted march past while fighter planes presented aerobatic maneuvers.

Saudi Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman Al Saud was the guest of honour in today’s event while the contingents of China and Azerbaijan are also being featured in the parade.

President approves remission for prisoners on Pakistan Day, Eid

ISLAMABAD:President Asif Ali Zardari approved remission for the prisoners on the occasion of Pakistan Day annually observed on March 23 and Eid ul Fitr.

The president granted a remission of 90 days each, for both occasions in sentences exercising his powers under Article 45 of the Constitution and Rule 15-A of the Rules of Business.

However, the remission would not be applicable on the prisoners involved in murder, espionage and anti-state activities.

Besides, the prisoners involved in rape, theft, robbery, kidnapping, terrorism and financial crimes, would also be ineligible for the remission.

The reduction in sentences would be applicable on the male prisoners of over 65 years age and female prisoners of over 60 years age, who had completed one-third of the sentence.

President approves dismissal of SC’s Justice Mazahir Ali Naqvi

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari approved the dismissal of  Supreme Court (SC)  Justice (Retd) Mazahir Ali Naqvi.

The Ministry of Law also issued a notification for the dismissal of former judge Mazahir Ali Naqvi of the Supreme Court of Pakistan.

According to the notification, the Supreme Judicial Council declared Mazhar Naqvi guilty of judicial misconduct.

The notification of Mazahir Naqvi’s resignation as a judge was also withdrawn.

It should be noted that this month the Supreme Judicial Council had sent its opinion to the President for approval recommending the dismissal of Mazahir Naqvi.

 

In the statement issued in this regard, it was said that the Supreme Judicial Council reviewed 9 complaints against Mazahir Naqvi, these complaints were reviewed under Clause (6) of Article 206 of the Constitution.

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari emphasised the need for further boosting of bilateral ties between Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the areas of trade, economy, aviation, renewable energy, climate change and human resource development for the mutual benefit of the two brotherly countries.

The president expressed these views while talking to Ambassador of UAE to Pakistan Hamad Obaid Ibrahim Salem Al-Zaabi, who called on him, at Aiwan-e-Sadr.

Talking to the ambassador, the president urged the need to increase collaboration in the aviation industry to facilitate the Pakistani diaspora in the UAE, including the initiation of commercial flights of Airbus A380s. He said that Emirati businesses should be encouraged to invest in the Pakistan Stock Exchange to infuse innovative ideas and more capital in the Pakistan’s economy.

Talking about Sindh, the president apprised that Pakistan had started investing in mangrove forests and was trading carbon credits in the international market. He suggested that Pakistan and the UAE should mutually benefit from this opportunity. He said that projects had been undertaken for the lining of canals to overcome seepage and boost agricultural production.

He maintained that Pakistan and the UAE needed to collaborate in the agricultural sector by sharing new technologies as food security was a growing concern for the region due to climate change.

During the meeting, the ambassador highlighted that the UAE was committed to Pakistan’s development and would continue to stand with Pakistan. He stressed upon the need to transform the existing bilateral relationship into a strategic partnership between Pakistan and the UAE.

He also called for focusing on economic diplomacy, adding that big companies from the UAE were keen to invest in aviation, agriculture, renewable energy (solar), education and healthcare in Pakistan. He informed that the UAE had recently hosted COP-28 and pledged $100 million for the “loss & damage” fund to help vulnerable countries deal with the adverse effects of climate change. He said that Pakistan could benefit from this fund to mitigate the impacts of climate change.

The ambassador congratulated President Asif Ali Zardari on becoming the President for the second term and extended best wishes on behalf of the leadership and people of the UAE.

He further reaffirmed their strong commitment to further reinforce the bond of friendship between the two countries.

He also extended an invitation to the president to visit the UAE, which the president accepted. The president thanked the UAE’s leadership for warm greetings and messages of felicitation and said that the UAE was very close to his heart.

ISLAMABAD:  President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned a terrorist attack in Mir Ali, North Waziristan and paid tribute to shaheed officers and personnel of Pakistan army.

President Asif Ali Zardari also reiterated the resolve to eradicate terrorism forever.

On the other hand, Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday strongly condemned the cowardly terrorist attack in North Waziristan.

The prime minister expressed his deep grief and sorrow over shahadat of seven personnel, including two officers, of the security forces.

He said that martyred jawans had foiled nefarious designs of terrorists. The entire nation, including him, were proud of the sacrifices of shaheed jawans who had laid down their lives for the motherland, he added.

In a statement, the minister paid tributes to the officers and Jawans of the Pakistan Army who were martyred in the terrorist attack.

Expressing condolences to the families of the martyred, he said the government stood with their families.

Attacking security forces was a cowardly and reprehensible act, Ataullah Tarar said. The brave soldiers of Pakistan Army are sacrificing their lives for the security of the country, their sacrifices will always be remembered, he remarked.

ANP President Asfandyar Wali’s wife passes away

ISLAMABAD: Awami National Party (ANP) President Asfandyar Wali Khan’s wife passed away in Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Monday.

In a statement issued by the spokesperson ANP Zahid Khan, while confirming the death of Isfandyar Wali’s wife, it has been said that the deceased will be buried in Charsadda.

Spokesman ANP said that the time of funeral prayer of the deceased will be announced later.

She was the mother of ANP’s provincial president Aimal Wali Khan.

On the other hand, President Asif Ali Zardari expressed condolence over the death of Awami National Party leader Asfandyar Wali’s wife.

“My sympathies and prayers go to the bereaved family,” the president said, according to a President House press release.

Mahmood Achakzai demands ECP to postpone presidential election

ISLAMABAD: Mahmood Khan Achakzai, the candidate of the Sunni Ittehad Council(SIC) in the presidential election, demanded the postponement of the presidential election.

Mahmood Khan Achakzai, head of the Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party, has also written a letter to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) regarding the postponement of the presidential election.

Mahmood Khan Achakzai has said in his letter that many reserved seats of national and provincial assemblies are still vacant and the election should be postponed until the Electoral College is completed.

It should be remembered that the Election Commission of Pakistan(ECP) announced the presidential election on March 9, for which the nomination papers of Asif Ali Zardari of the Pakistan People’s Party and Mahmood Khan Achakzai of the Sunni Ittehad Council have been approved.

The statement of Maulana Fazal ur Rehman, the head of Jamiat Ulema Islam (JUI), also surfaced in this regard, in which he said that he wishes to vote for Mahmood Khan Achakzai in the presidential election, but the party’s decision is obligatory that he does not vote.

On the other hand, Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan has decided to vote for Pakistan People’s Party candidate Asif Ali Zardari in the presidential election.

KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister (CM), Syed Murad Ali Shah submitted the nomination papers of Asif Ali Zardari for the presidential elections to the Sindh High Court Chief Justice.

Syed Murad Ali Shah along with Members of Provincial Assembly (MPAs) Faryal Talpur, Syed Qaim Ali Shah, Syed Nasir Hussain Shah, Sharjeel Inaam Memon and others reached the High Court of Sindh and submitted nomination papers of Asif Ali Zardari for the election of the President of Pakistan to Chief Justice Sindh High Court Justice Aqeel Abbassi, who is the presiding officer for the presidential election.

Syed Murad Ali Shah has proposed while Syed Nasir Shah seconded the nomination papers of Asif Ali Zardari for presidential elections to held on March 09, 2024.

While talking to media after submitting nomination papers, CM Sindh said Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) will request all parties including MQM- Pakistan to vote for Asif Ali Zardari in the Presidential election.

He said that the party has requested MQM-P members to vote for PPP’s candidates for the election of speaker and deputy Speaker election.

Replying to a question regarding MQM’s demand for amendment in Local Government Act, Shah said that in Sindh, Local Bodies were already powerful, MQM might have demanded local government powers for Punjab.

He said that PPP will approach legal forums for its grievances regarding polls.

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf (PTI) and Sunni Ittehad Council(SIC) announced the  presidential nominee against Asif Ali Zardari.

The Sunni Ittehad Council has nominated Mehmood Khan Achakzai, the head of the Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party, as the presidential candidate.

Sources say that in this regard, PTI founder Imran Khan has issued a message from Adiala Jail to the leaders of Sunni Ittehad Council to support Mehmood Khan Achakzai.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has announced the schedule for the presidential election on March 9, for which nomination papers can be submitted on March 2 before 12 noon.

According to the election schedule, the nomination papers will be checked by the Returning Officer on March 4 at 10 am, the nomination papers can be withdrawn on March 5 at 12 noon.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader Sher Afzal Marwat also hinted to nominate Mahmood Khan Achakzai as the presidential candidate.

Asif Ali Zardari will be the presidential candidate on behalf of Pakistan People’s Party, Chairman People’s Party will support Asif Ali Zardari while Farooq H. Naik will submit his nomination papers.

PPP formed four-member committee to get vote for Asif Zardari

ISLAMABAD: Chairman Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has formed a four-member committee for persuading different political parties to vote for the party’s presidential candidate, Asif Ali Zardari.

According to the notification issued here by the Chairman’s Secretariat by his Political Secretary Jameel Soomro, the committee is comprised of senior leaders including Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, Raja Parvez Sharaf, Syed Khursheed Shah, and Syed Naveed Qamar.

It is pertinent to mention here that earlier during the last week, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the PPP had announced Asif Ali Zardari as a joint candidate for the presidential elections.

Addressing a joint press conference at Zardari House in Islamabad, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said that PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif will once again be the country’s prime minister.

Bilawal Bhutto also said that the PML-N would support his father Asif Ali Zardari for the president’s slot. “Asif Zardari would be our joint candidate for president,” he said, adding that they all want to work according to the hopes of the people.

ISLAMABAD : Pakistan People’s Party Parliamentarian (PPPP) Candidate Asif Ali Zardari has won the election for National Assembly constituency NA-207 Shaheed Benazirabad-I by securing 1,46,989 votes.

According to the unofficial result issued by the Returning Officer/ECP, his runner-up was Independent candidate Sardar Sher Muhammad Rind Baloch, who bagged 51,916 votes.

Overall voters’ turn-out remained 44.52 percent.

On the other hand, Pakistan People’s Party Parliamentarian (PPPP) Candidate Mir Munawar Ali Talpur has won the election for National Assembly constituency NA-212 Mirpur Khas-II by securing 1,21,972 votes. According to the unofficial result issued by the Returning Officer/ECP, his runner-up was Independent candidate Ali Nawaz Shah, who bagged 45,321 votes.

Overall voters’ turn-out remained 47.27 percent.

Similarly, Pakistan People’s Party Parliamentarian (PPPP) Candidate Syed Rafi Ullah has won the election for National Assembly constituency NA-230 Malir-II by securing 32,099 votes. According to the unofficial result issued by the Returning Officer/ECP, his runner-up was Pakistan Rah e Haq Party candidate Hafiz Aurangzeb Farooqi, who bagged 15,593 votes.
