Pakistan slams Israel for targeting Gaza’s medical infrastructure

Pakistan

UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan denounced Israel’s “deliberate” targeting of hospitals, medical personnel, patients and the wounded as Israeli military forces press on with their war in Gaza, and called for “Independent and transparent” investigations into its attacks on health infrastructure and other war crimes.

“Impunity must end,” Ambassador Asim Iftikhar, alternate permanent representative of Pakistan to the United Nations, told the UN Security Council which met in emergency session on the collapse of health services in besieged Strip.

In this regard, he underscored the need for ensuring that perpetrators are held to account.

Friday’s meeting was called by Algeria, the leading voice for the Arab world on the Council which has just taken the gavel as president for the month of January. UN panel adopts Pakistani resolutions on strengthening regional, world peace

UN panel

UNITED NATIONS: A key committee of the UN General Assembly has adopted Pakistan’s four annual disarmament-related resolutions that are aimed at underpinning regional as well as international peace and security, reflecting Islamabad’s commitment to achieving those goals.

Three of these resolutions, adopted by the 193-nation Assembly’s First Committee (Disarmament and International Security), received overwhelming support from member states even as the global non-proliferation and disarmament regime is facing challenges. The texts are expected to come up for endorsement by the General Assembly next month.

The resolutions deal with regional disarmament, conventional arms control at regional and subregional levels as well as Confidence Building Measures (CBMs) in the regional and subregional context.

The resolutions titled, “Regional disarmament” and “Confidence-building Measures in the regional and sub-regional context” were adopted by consensus.

The text titled, “Conventional arms control at the regional and sub-regional level” received 179 votes in favour, with India voting against, the only country to do so, and its ally — Israel — abstained.

The overwhelming support for the resolution reflected the international community’s acknowledgement of Pakistan’s advocacy for conventional arms control, restraint and balance in defence capabilities of States located in the same region or sub-region.

Diplomats at the UN have expressed appreciation for Pakistan’s initiatives, over the years, to promote the goals of regional disarmament, conventional arms control, and Confidence Building Measures (CBMs).

The resolutions, they noted, recognize the significance of and complementarity between regional and global approaches to arms control, disarmament and confidence building to promote international peace, security and stability

The resolution on conventional arms control at regional and subregional levels acknowledges that the preservation of a balance in States’ defence capabilities strengthens peace and stability.

PM calls for bringing Israel to justice for killing journalists

PM

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif  called upon the international community and various organizations to bring Israel to justice for the massacre of journalists in Gaza.

Despite international conventions, dozens of journalists in Gaza were deliberately killed to obstruct the truth, the prime minister said in his message on the occasion of International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists.

He emphasized that journalists from across the world including Pakistan work day and night to keep the world informed.

“Unfortunately, journalists have to endure various dangers, hardships, and difficulties in pursuit of truth,” he regretted.

Besides working in peace, he said the journalists also risked their lives reporting even in conflict zones and during wars.

These advocates of truth face restrictions, violence, threats, kidnappings, and even murder, he said adding “Without the protection of journalists, freedom of the press cannot be achieved”.

“Our government has taken priority measures to ensure the protection and rights of journalists,” he stated.

The prime minister said Pakistani journalists had made immense sacrifices for democracy, adherence to the Constitution, and the rule of law.

“The Journalist and Media Workers Protection Act 2021 was passed to protect journalists and media workers.”

PM Shehbaz said health insurance for journalists was also an important initiative of the federal government for their protection.

“We are committed to preventing crimes against journalists, ensuring punishment for perpetrators, and safeguarding journalists in Pakistan,” the prime minister assured.

UN chief slams broadening’ of Mideast conflict

UN chief

UNITED NATIONS: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres denounced the escalation of tensions in the Middle East, especially between Iran and Israel.

“I condemn the broadening of the Middle East conflict with escalation after escalation,” Guterres wrote on X.

Urging that the escalations “must stop,” Guterres said, “We absolutely need a ceasefire.”

His statement came after Iran fired hundreds of ballistic missiles at Israel amid heightened tensions between the two countries.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRCG) said the attack was in response to the assassinations of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and IRGC commander Abbas Nilforoshan.

Haniyeh was assassinated in Tehran last month. Nasrallah was killed Friday in Beirut, along with Nilforoshan.

The RGC warned that if Israel responds to the missile barrage, it will face more “crushing attacks.”

It said the attack was conducted with the support of the army and Defence Ministry.

Tensions have been running high between Tehran and Tel Aviv since the assassination of Haniyeh in the Iranian capital on Aug. 1. Iran had blamed it on Israel and vowed a stern response.

The assassination of Nasrallah in an Israeli airstrike in a southern suburb of Beirut was followed by strong condemnation from Iran’s top leadership.

It is not yet known if the missiles fired toward Israel struck their targets and if there were any casualties or damages.

Before Iran’s attack, Israel had carried out a series of devastating blows in recent weeks against the leadership of Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon.

It then ratcheted up the pressure on the militant group – which has been firing rockets into Israel since the war in Gaza began – by launching what it said is a limited ground incursion in southern Lebanon.

Israeli military spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said the country’s air defences intercepted many of the incoming missiles, though some landed in central and southern Israel.

“This strike will have consequences,” he said. He said the attack had caused only “very few” injuries, but did not elaborate.
