Pakistan slams Israel for targeting Gaza’s medical infrastructure

Pakistan

UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan denounced Israel’s “deliberate” targeting of hospitals, medical personnel, patients and the wounded as Israeli military forces press on with their war in Gaza, and called for “Independent and transparent” investigations into its attacks on health infrastructure and other war crimes.

“Impunity must end,” Ambassador Asim Iftikhar, alternate permanent representative of Pakistan to the United Nations, told the UN Security Council which met in emergency session on the collapse of health services in besieged Strip.

In this regard, he underscored the need for ensuring that perpetrators are held to account.

Friday’s meeting was called by Algeria, the leading voice for the Arab world on the Council which has just taken the gavel as president for the month of January. Senior official from the World Health Organization (WHO) Rik Peeperkorn briefed ambassadors alongside High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk. Dr. Tanya Haj Hassan with the charity Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP), also poke, sharing the perspectives of healthcare workers

In his remarks, the Pakistan envoy said that the deliberate targeting of hospitals, medical personnel, patients and the wounded defies every principle of international humanitarian law and has no justification whatsoever.

“Not just condemnation, there must be accountability for these crimes,” Ambassador Asim Iftikhar said, delivering Pakistan’s first statement in the 15-member Council as the country took its seat on the world’s body’s power centre as non-permanent member on January 1.

He said that the deliberate targeting of hospitals, medical personnel, patients and the wounded defies every principle of international humanitarian law and has no justification whatsoever, adding there must be accountability for these crimes, not just condemnation.

Between October 2023 and June 2024, at least 136 strikes were carried out on 27 hospitals and 12 other medical facilities, with over 500 healthcare workers losing their lives, it was pointed out. By June, 22 of Gaza’s 38 hospitals were rendered non-functional, leaving the healthcare system on the verge of collapse.

The ambassador called for “decisive” action to for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire to halt the bloodshed and destruction in Gaza and lifting of the enclave’s inhumane blockade to ensure free flow of food, medical supplies, and humanitarian aid for those in desperate need.

Pakistan assumes responsibility as non-permanent membership of UNSC

Pakistan

UNITED NATIONS: The Pakistani national flag was installed in front of the United Nations Security Council chamber, as Pakistan began its eighth term as a non-permanent member (2025-26) of the 15-member body.

As part of the joining ceremony, flags of the five new incoming non-permanent members — Pakistan, along with Denmark, Greece, Panama and Somalia — were installed at UNSC’s stakeout at the UN Headquarters in New York.

The new members replaced Japan, Ecuador, Malta, Mozambique and Switzerland whose terms ended on December 31, 2024.

Pakistan’s Alternate Permanent Representative, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, installed the national flag as part of the impressive ceremony.

In his brief remarks, he said that Pakistan will continue to be guided by the purposes and principles of the UN Charter including maintenance of international peace and security and development of friendly relations among nations based on the principle of equal rights and self-determination.

“Pakistan will always remain a strong voice for peoples under foreign occupation and oppression and for the realization of their right to self-determination,” Ambassador Ahmad said.

Pakistan, he said, was convinced that cooperative multilateralism – with the UN at its core – was the best way of tackling today’s multifaceted challenges.

Pakistan, he said, will partner with fellow members to actively pursue just and peaceful solutions to the issues on the Council’s agenda, and strive to make optimal use of the tools at our disposal – from conflict prevention to peacekeeping to peacebuilding – to achieve durable peace.

Pakistan will preside over the 15-member Council in July when it assumes its presidency according to alphabetical rotation of the member states’ official names. This will allow Islamabad to set the Security Council’s agenda.

In addition to this, Pakistan will get a seat on the Islamic State (ISIS) and Al Qaeda Sanctions Committee, which is responsible for designating individuals and groups as terrorists and imposing sanctions.

Pakistan opposes proposal for new permanent seats in UNSC

Pakistan

UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan has opposed the proposal for new permanent seats in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and demanded equal and accountable reforms in the council.

“The UfC continues to believe that its proposal for an expansion of Security Council membership to 26 or 27, with the addition of 11 or 12 new non-permanent members, offers the best basis for Security Council reform,” Ambassador Munir Akram, permanent representative to the UN, told delegates when the deadlocked Inter-Governmental Negotiations (IGN) aimed at restructuring the Council resumed on Tuesday.

The UfC’s proposal to add only non-permanent members, elected periodically by the General Assembly, is “democratic and consistent” with the Charter’s prescription that the Council “acts on behalf” of the entire membership, he said, adding it will also ensure “equitable representation” – the key objective of the Council reform process.

Full-scale negotiations to reform the Security Council began in the General Assembly in February 2009 on five key areas — the categories of membership, the question of veto, regional representation, size of an enlarged Security Council, and working methods of the council and its relationship with the General Assembly.

Progress towards reforming the Security Council remains blocked as G-4 countries — India, brazil, Germany and Japan — continue pushing for permanent seats in the Council, while the Italy/Pakistan-led UfC group opposes any additional permanent members.

As a compromise, UfC has proposed a new category of members — not permanent members — with longer duration in terms and a possibility to get re-elected.

The Security Council is currently composed of five permanent members — Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States — and 10 non-permanent members elected to two-year terms.

Participating in a discussion on the ‘Categories of Membership and Cross-regional Representation’, Ambassador Akram rejected claims by the aspirants of permanent membership about their reference to ‘new realities’, saying that there are more than four or six states, possibly 20, which are making greater contribution to peace and security than the four pushing for the permanent category.

There was no justification for the creation of “new centres of privilege” (permanent members) within the UN, and there were no States which could justifiably claim such unequal status under the UN Charter, he said.

AJK PM expresses concern over human right violations in IIOJK

AJK PM

MIRPUR  (AJK):Azad Jammu Kashmir (AJK) Prime Minister Chaudhry Anwar ul Haq, while voicing his serious concern over the worsening political and human rights situation in the Indian-illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) state, urged upon the international community to play its due role to help resolve the lingering dispute without further loss of time.

“The much-delayed global Kashmir conflict has been the main cause and consequence of rights violations in the region,” the AJK Prime Minister said while talking to the AJK Muslim Conference chief former Prime Minister of AJ&K Sardar Atique Ahmed Khan, who called on him at Jammu Kashmir House in the federal metropolis.

Speaking on the occasion, the PM said that the situation in IIOJK has further deteriorated since the Modi government stripped the region of its special status. The Indian government’s unilateral move, he said, was in violation of the UNSC resolutions.

He said that the Indian Supreme Court’s verdict on 370 has further compounded the issue of Kashmir.

The PM said that the Kashmiri people have neither accepted India’s belligerent military occupation nor do they accept the biased verdict of the Indian Supreme Court.

He said that the government of Azad Kashmir would utilize all available resources to promote the Kashmiris’ just cause at the international level, besides sensitizing the world about the early resolution of the Kashmir issue in line with the UNSC resolutions.

Referring to the recently held conference in Kotli, the PM said that the massive gathering held in support of Kashmiris’ right to self-determination was organized against the backdrop of the All Parties Kashmir Conference, which was attended by the representatives of all the political parties of Azad Kashmir and the All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC).

Anwaar said that besides highlighting the Kashmir cause, the government had stepped up its efforts to establish good governance and rule of law in the state. He said that the welfare of people was among the government’s top priorities.

Former Prime Minister Sardar Atique Ahmed Khan assured the PM of his party’s full support to strengthen Kashmir’s ongoing freedom struggle.

UN Security Council members urged the Taliban to lift bans on women

members
  • Taliban restricted women’s access to nearly every aspect of public life.
  • The United Arab Emirates and Japan requested that the 15-member UNSC meet in private on Friday.
  •  Members of the UNSC urged Taliban to lift bans.

As the Taliban continued to enforce restrictive laws on women’s employment and education, a number of UNSC members asked the group to stop treating Afghan women in an oppressive manner.

The United Arab Emirates and Japan requested that the 15-member UNSC meet in private on Friday to review the actions taken by the Taliban-led government, which took control of Afghanistan in August 2021 after the US troop pullout.

Since then, the Taliban has restricted women’s access to nearly every aspect of public life, prohibiting them from pursuing secondary and higher education, working in the public sector, and going to parks.

Japanese Ambassador Ishikane Kimihiro said, “We encourage the Taliban to immediately reverse any restrictive measures against women and girls.”

The United Nations Security Council has called on the Taliban to respect the rights of women and girls. 11 nations,  demanded that the Taliban respect human rights in Afghanistan, including the right to education and freedom of expression.

They also called on the authorities in Afghanistan to reverse bans on women working for aid groups or attending universities and high school.

According to the UN 20 million people in Afghanistan are suffering from severe hunger, 97 percent of the population relies on charity for survival, and two-thirds of Afghans live in poverty.

The executive director of UNICEF said that the restriction on female relief workers was “both wrong and dangerous.”

“To say that without them, lives will be lost, children will die, is not hyperbole,” she said.
