Indian professor compares Lollywood vs Bollywood response to communal riots

Following the Jaranwala riots, where a Christian neighbourhood faced destruction due to blasphemy allegations and ensuing violence, numerous Pakistani celebrities and public figures swiftly criticized the authorities for their failure to control the situation. They called for immediate action against the perpetrators. Ashok Swain, UNESCO International Water Cooperation chairperson and Uppsala University professor, pointed out the contrast between Lollywood condemning communal riots and ethnic violence against minorities, and the notable silence among Bollywood figures regarding rising hate crimes against minorities.

In the wake of these events, Lollywood celebs and other prominent figures like Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy, Mahira Khan, and Azekah Daniels expressed their condemnation of the injustice faced by the Christian community in Pakistan. Chinoy, a two-time Oscar winner, utilized her Instagram stories to criticize what she deemed as hypocritical behaviour among Pakistanis. She mentioned how they swiftly respond when the Holy Quran is threatened, yet remain silent when churches are targeted by mobs.

Singer Shae Gill, who is Christian, expressed speechlessness at the incident and hoped for increased awareness to put an end to such atrocities.

Conversely, Bollywood celebrities have been called out for promoting communal violence and Islamophobia through their films. Instances include Akshay Kumar’s film “Sooryavanshi” promoting Islamophobia and Shah Rukh Khan being labelled a “terrorist” by BJP politicians. Additionally, Shah Rukh Khan’s film’s music video faced backlash due to baseless “Love Jihad” theories, which claimed that Muslim men seduce Hindu women to convert them to Islam.

While this doesn’t imply that cinema in Pakistan is inherently progressive, the power of public figures using their platforms to educate the masses about sensitive issues is crucial in combating growing communal violence and hatred.

Remarkably, these numbers stand strong despite competing against the box office titan “Gadar 2,” being screened in just under 2000 theaters, and carrying an A certification.

This achievement would mark a milestone for Akshay Kumar, making him the first actor since “Sooryavanshi” to cross this financial threshold. Notably, Akshay Kumar’s extended cameo has been instrumental in driving the film’s success.

Manushi Chillar made her Bollywood debut in the movie “Samrat Prithviraj” (2022) alongside Akshay Kumar, but unfortunately, the film didn’t perform well at the box office. Despite this setback, Chillar remains optimistic and considers herself fortunate for the opportunity. She acknowledges that being an outsider in the industry brings its own challenges and differences.

According to Chillar, “Being an outsider comes with a sense of pride and believing in yourself. That’s because when you explore something absolutely new in your life, it builds a certain innate confidence that cannot be done if you keep exploring familiar shores.”

While her first film may not have succeeded, the 26-year-old is eagerly looking forward to her upcoming projects such as “The Great Indian Family,” “Tehran,” and “Bade Miyan Chote Miyan.” She recognizes that being an outsider in the industry poses challenges, but she believes that the excitement of the journey outweighs the difficulties.

Chillar’s journey into the glamour world began with a beauty pageant, through which she ultimately became Miss World. Winning an international pageant provided her with a substantial platform and exposure. However, she notes the distinctions between the world of pageantry and acting. She remarks, “At the same time, it’s (acting) is a very different field than being in a beauty pageant. There are many good things that Miss World adds, but at the end of the day, you’re an outsider, and you have to start your journey and understand the whole industry from level zero and grow from there.”

Fame has brought its own challenges, particularly in adapting to the newfound public attention. Coming from a reserved student life, dealing with extensive public scrutiny has been an adjustment for Chillar, especially given her relatively young age.

Chillar initially studied medicine, but she chose to pursue acting instead of a medical career. She has no regrets about her choices and is content with how her life has unfolded. While her first passion remains in healthcare, she believes that there are alternative ways to contribute to the healthcare system without being a doctor.

He asserted, “Possessing a Canadian passport doesn’t diminish my Indianness. I remain very much Indian. I’ve been here for the past nine years since obtaining the passport. I won’t delve into reasons, the ‘whys,’ what happened, my films weren’t succeeding, and so on — well, that’s okay.”

“Yes, I mentioned it in 2019, I initiated the process. But then the pandemic emerged. For 2-2.5 years, everything came to a halt due to the pandemic. The renunciation letter has now arrived (and) soon my new passport will arrive as well.” He humorously added, “What can I do, I’m not responsible for the pandemic.” Despite the challenging climate, Akshay’s recent release, “OMG 2,” alongside Pankaj Tripathi, has performed well at the box office, even against competition like “Gadar 2.”

Additionally, he is set to star in the untitled Hindi remake of “Soorarai Pottru,” slated for a September 1 theatrical release, alongside Radhika Madan and Paresh Rawal. Further on, he features in the action thriller “Bade Miyan Chote Miyan” with Tiger Shroff, scheduled for Eid 2024.

Abhishek Bachchan Reflects On Future ‘Dhoom 4’ Project

During the interview, Abhishek expressed his desire to return to the action genre after exploring experimental roles in films like Dasvi and Bob Biswas. He also discussed the prospects of another instalment in the Dhoom series. Speaking openly, the Housefull 3 actor stated to India Today: “I would love [to do an action film]. It just so happened, the last two years were so busy. I have made like 5-6 movies in the last two years.”

When asked about the possibility of Dhoom 4, Abhishek disclosed that he hasn’t heard any plans for it so far. He mentioned that if Aditya Chopra, the film’s producer, had intentions for such a project, he would have informed him. The actor maintained a neutral stance, neither confirming nor dismissing the possibility of the new film.

“I don’t have any information about it. If ‘Dhoom 4’ was being made, Adi [Chopra] would have told us. I can’t confirm or deny it but I am pretty sure I would have been told if he is making one,” he remarked.

At the beginning of 2023, after the success of Pathaan, rumours circulated that Yash Raj Films was considering reviving the Dhoom franchise, with Akshay Kumar in the lead role and John Abraham as the antagonist. However, YRF dismissed these rumours, according to sources.

With Abhishek Bachchan’s statement, it becomes evident that there are no immediate plans for such a project.

Initially put on hold by the Central Board of Certification (CBFC) in July, the sequel has been grappling with controversies on social media, raising curiosity about its content.

The movie has already stirred attention due to Akshay Kumar’s portrayal of Lord Shiva, a role that has drawn significant attention. Apart from facing the demand for 35 cuts, the Censor Board also called for alterations in Akshay’s character, transforming him from a depiction of the deity into a messenger of Lord Shiva.

In the midst of these controversies, Yami Gautam and Pankaj Tripathi, key actors in the film, have taken a proactive stance by encouraging the audience to experience the film firsthand before making judgments. Among these, 2800 tickets were sold by PVR, 1600 by Inox, and 1100 by Cinepolis.

Akshay Kumar’s upcoming film “OMG 2”, directed by Amit Rai and also starring Pankaj Tripathi and Yami Gautam, is generating significant buzz as it approaches its theatrical release. The film, which serves as a sequel to the super-hit dramedy “OMG – Oh My God!”, is set to hit theaters in less than a week. In an unprecedented move, the film’s advance ticket bookings were opened even before the trailer’s release, and so far, the response has been encouraging.

Despite being rated ‘A’, “OMG 2” has managed to register healthy pre-sales, with 5500 tickets already sold in three major national chains as of 10 pm on August 4th, 2023. Among these, 2800 tickets were sold by PVR, 1600 by Inox, and 1100 by Cinepolis. While this number may appear modest compared to recent Akshay Kumar films, closer to the release date, the total ticket sales are expected to surpass those of his films since “Sooryavanshi”.

As a sequel to a beloved franchise, expectations were high for “OMG 2” to make a big opening, but censorship issues have posed challenges. After overcoming behind-the-scenes drama with the censor board, Amit Rai’s much-awaited OMG 2, featuring Akshay Kumar, Pankaj Tripathi, and Yami Gautam, is all set to hit the theaters on August 11, 2023. The film’s advance bookings opened recently, and the initial response has surpassed expectations, thanks to a well-cut teaser and the franchise’s popularity, driving the movement in national chains.

As of Thursday, 10 PM, OMG 2 has secured 3200 advance bookings in three major national chains – PVR, Inox, and Cinepolis. Additionally, MovieMax chain added another 100 bookings, bringing the total to 3300 tickets. Although these numbers might seem modest compared to past blockbusters like Gadar, they are promising enough to ensure a decent initial box-office performance. The film has been granted an ‘A – Adults Only’ certification with a runtime of 2 hours and 36 minutes.

Putting an end to the speculations surrounding the film’s fate, it has been confirmed that OMG 2 will not undergo any cuts. Pankaj Tripathi revealed his thoughts on the upcoming box office clash between two highly anticipated films: Akshay Kumar’s OMG 2 and Sunny Deol’s Gadar 2. Pankaj, who stars alongside Akshay Kumar in OMG 2, expressed that he was not worried about the clash at all.

He confidently stated, “Main siwaye acting ke, aur kisi cheez par dhyaan nahi deta (I don’t worry about anything else other than acting).” Pankaj emphasized that his primary focus was on his craft and delivering a compelling performance. He added, “If four films are released (on the same day), and all four of them are good, toh wo sab chalengi (they will all do well). I don’t really bother about how many screens we have got. I’m not even aware where my film will be released. Acting mera kaam hai aur film ki business side ke baare mein mujhe koi idea nahi hota (My job is to act, and I don’t have any idea about the business side of the film).”

Interestingly, Sunny Deol, who leads the cast of Gadar 2, also shared his thoughts on the clash in a chat with Times of India. He recalled how the first Gadar film had clashed with Aamir Khan’s Lagaan in the past and had emerged victorious at the box office. Sunny expressed his confusion over comparing the two films, suggesting that he believed in the strength of Gadar 2.

Reflecting on the past clash with “Lagaan,” he emphasized that there should be no comparisons between films, especially in terms of business and likability. He recalled how “Gadar” performed exceptionally well, crossing the 100 crore mark, while “Lagaan” didn’t achieve the same level of success. Despite initial perceptions that “Gadar” was a typical masala film with old-style songs, it went on to become a beloved people’s film. In contrast, “Lagaan” was considered a classic, but the so-called film critics had initially criticized “Gadar.” However, it won over the hearts of the audience, proving its worth.

Sunny Deol further stated that comparisons between films, even when they are vastly different in nature, seem to be inevitable in the industry. He stressed that such comparisons should not be made, as every film has its own unique appeal and should be judged accordingly. A distressing video of two women from Manipur being subjected to heinous acts, including stripping, parading naked, and assault, has sent shockwaves across the nation. The incident is a result of ongoing communal clashes between the Meitei community in the Imphal Valley and the Kuki tribe from the hills since May.

Several Bollywood celebrities, including Akshay Kumar, Kiara Advani, Renuka Shahane, Richa Chadha, and Sonu Sood, among others, have expressed their outrage and demanded justice for the victims.

Superstar Akshay Kumar was among the first to react, taking to Twitter on July 20th, expressing his disgust and urging for severe punishment for the culprits. Kiara Advani, too, voiced her horror and called for swift justice for the women involved.
