Abhishek Bachchan Unveils How Aishwarya Rai & Jaya Bachchan Joined ‘Paa’

Abhishek Bachchan

Abhishek Bachchan recently appeared in R Balki’s sports drama film “Ghoomer,” alongside Saiyami Kher, and his performance is receiving commendation. This isn’t the first time Abhishek has collaborated with R Balki; they previously worked together in the 2009 film “Paa,” starring Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek, and Vidya Balan. During an interview, Abhishek Bachchan shared insights into how R Balki managed to involve the entire Bachchan family in a movie. He also disclosed details about Jaya Bachchan’s role in “Paa” and how his wife Aishwarya Rai Bachchan unintentionally became a part of the film.

In conversation with Filmfare, Abhishek Bachchan highlighted R Balki’s distinct knack for bringing the entire Bachchan family together for a film. He mentioned, “He somehow manages to get away with, or wangle his way, but he’s the only person who manages to get the entire Bachchan family involved in a film.” He further elaborated on his mother Jaya Bachchan’s involvement in “Paa.” “I still remember the first film he made me a producer on, was Paa. My father and I were in that film, and suddenly the next thing I knew, my mother was doing the title. It’s possibly one of the sweetest titles. The credits are narrated by my mother. You must see it, it’s very charming,” he shared.

Abhishek Bachchan recounted an incident from 2009 while shooting for “Paa” when his wife Aishwarya Rai Bachchan gave him a brilliant suggestion. “I’ve flown in from Goa, where I was shooting. This is in November 2009. And I only had the day and I fly back at night because I was shooting. I reached home and I was like ‘Oh my God, I don’t know what to wear. Back in those days, we didn’t have stylists. So Aishwarya is sitting there looking at me running around like a headless chicken. She says ‘why don’t you just wear your white kurta pajama, your glasses? Go as your character.’ I said this is genius!”

He later suggested to R Balki, “Ash has said why don’t you promote it as Amol Arte?” The director responded, “Brilliant! Superb! Let her promote the marketing.” Abhishek Bachchan shared that R Balki continues to joke about it and affectionately refers to Aishwarya as the “marketing manager.” The film “Paa” is a 2009 comedy-drama directed by R. Balki, featuring Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, and Vidya Balan in key roles. The film centered on the relationship of a boy with a rare genetic condition called progeria and his parents.

Saiyami Kher Shares Painful Experience On “Ghoomar” Shoot

Saiyami Kher

Saiyami Kher, within just eight years of her acting debut, has collaborated with the most prominent directors in the Hindi film industry. Despite her own love for cricket, she has garnered critical and audience acclaim for her role in “Ghoomer,” where she impeccably portrays a paraplegic cricketer. While working with co-star Abhishek Bachchan, who plays her strict coach on screen, Saiyami shares that he is her favorite co-star for various reasons. In an interview, Saiyami delves into the success of “Ghoomer,” discussing its significance and the experience of collaborating with R Balki and Abhishek. Here are some excerpts:

The rapid succession of events has been quite overwhelming. During my training for “Ghoomer,” I was simultaneously involved in the film “Faadu,” followed immediately by “Ghoomer.”

In response to the query, “In a recent video with Sachin Tendulkar, you captioned it with ‘this is what happiness is.’ What does that mean to you?” She stated, “Sachin Tendulkar has been a tremendous inspiration for me. I’ve admired him since childhood, and it has been my aspiration to have him see my work. This was a dream of mine. Even while pursuing acting, my friends used to jest that someday Sachin might watch my film. I dedicated myself to achieving this goal. It was an incredibly overwhelming experience for him to watch my film, and he expressed immense enjoyment. Furthermore, I had the opportunity to bowl in front of him, although the wet gully cricket pitch prevented him from batting.”

The host asked, “Playing a paraplegic athlete required strapping your hand at the back. How challenging was this aspect of shooting?” She responded, “This film has been the most physically and mentally demanding project I’ve undertaken. For ten hours each day, I had my hand bound behind me while wearing a prosthetic over it. With my hand restrained, I had to run, field, dive, play, eat, and even sleep. The physical pain was excruciating, but equally taxing were the emotional depths my character explored.”

To the further question of the host, “Were there instances when you were close to breaking down?” Saiyami Kher reacted by saying, ” No, I never reached a point of breaking down because I was completely committed and excited about each day of shooting. I didn’t perceive it as too much despite the challenges. The struggle was present, yet it was also enjoyable. I endured a leg fracture and a dislodged toenail, among other injuries, but I never felt overwhelmed.”

To the query, “You’ve collaborated with top-tier directors. What is R Balki’s directing process like?” Saiyami Kher said, “I’ve been fortunate to work with exceptional directors such as Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Anurag Kashyap, Neeraj Pandey, Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari, and now R Balki. This has been a great blessing in my relatively short career, a validation regardless of a film’s outcome. Balki is collaborative and open to suggestions. He appreciates logical ideas and meticulous preparation is vital on his sets. He’s not conventionally filmy; he’s a cricket enthusiast. “Ghoomer” is his tribute to cricket, and he’s delighted to give back to the sport. He’s a fantastic person to work with, pampering me both on and off set.”

Could you share your favorite scene from “Ghoomer”? My favorite scene is the climax, where I break down after hitting the winning shot. It’s deeply personal, as it allowed me to release years of pent-up emotions from facing rejection and failure.

Talking about co-star Abhishek Bachchan, she said, “Abhishek is one of my favorite co-stars, having previously worked together on “Breathe.” He’s genuinely caring and mature, and I’ve learned a lot from him over the past few years. It’s a wonderful experience collaborating with him.”

Your film received a standing ovation at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne, yet you displayed minimal emotion at the moment. Are you not particularly expressive? I’m not very expressive; I tend to keep my feelings bottled up inside. However, when I’m acting in front of the camera, I can convey everything I’ve concealed. Publicly, I don’t often show my emotions.

How gratifying is this success to you? Receiving appreciation for your work is immensely gratifying. A pivotal validation was receiving a letter from Mr. Amitabh Bachchan. This holds tremendous significance, especially in light of those who doubted my abilities. I hope the love and support continue to pour in.

  • ‘Ghoomer’ alongside Saiyami Kher approaches, Abhishek Bachchan has opened up about the importance of his family legacy.

As the release of his upcoming film ‘Ghoomer’ alongside Saiyami Kher approaches, Abhishek Bachchan has opened up about the importance of his family legacy and how his wife, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, is instilling the value of their surname in their daughter, Aaradhya.

During a recent conversation with Raj Shamani, Abhishek Bachchan shared insights into how Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is actively passing on the significance of the ‘Bachchan’ surname to their daughter.

Bachchan emphasized, “My surname holds immense reverence for me. My identity and accomplishments are closely tied to this surname, a legacy passed down by my grandfather and diligently upheld by my father.”

Discussing how Aishwarya imparts this legacy to their daughter, he added, “I observe my wife imparting these values to our daughter. Our approach is gentle; we don’t wish to burden her, but it’s essential that she honors the achievements and legacy of her father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. She must hold this heritage in high regard and protect its sanctity.”

The eagerly anticipated film ‘Ghoomer’ will see Abhishek Bachchan in the role of a strict cricket coach. Saiyami Kher will portray the inspiring journey of a paraplegic sportswoman who triumphs as a cricketer against all odds, guided by her coach.

In an exclusive interaction with Pinkvilla, Abhishek delved into his character, Padam Singh Sodhi, stating, “Paddy comes across as an emotionally sensitive individual in the film. However, his way of expression is paradoxical—displaying his emotions in a contrasting manner. This facet intrigued me, as he communicates his feelings through a bitter and acerbic demeanor, masking an underlying deep affection for his profession.”

Alongside Abhishek and Saiyami, ‘Ghoomer’ features prominent actors Shabana Azmi and Angad Bedi in pivotal roles. The movie is all set to grace theaters on August 18th.”
