Rare Spotless Giraffe Joins USA Zoo

Rare Spotless Giraffe Joins USA Zoo
  • Unique appearance: Solid-colored reticulated giraffe, a one-of-a-kind.
  • Giraffe species: Reticulated giraffe, one of four distinct types.
  • Name search: Public invited to suggest names on Facebook.

In a truly extraordinary event, Brights Zoo in the USA experienced a remarkable birth on July 31. The zoo welcomed a spotless giraffe into its family, marking one of the rarest occurrences in the animal kingdom. The newborn, currently standing at six feet tall, is thriving under the attentive care of its mother.

The uniqueness of this giraffe’s appearance has astonished experts and zoo professionals across the nation. According to WJHL.com, specialists at Brights Zoo believe that this solid-colored reticulated giraffe is the only one of its kind in existence. The reticulated giraffe is classified as one of four distinct giraffe species by the Giraffe Conservation Foundation, which works to protect giraffes in the wild. Unfortunately, the International Union for Conservation of Nature listed this species as threatened in 2018.

The birth of this spotless giraffe holds significance beyond its rarity, shedding light on the pressing conservation challenges facing giraffes in their natural habitats. Tony Bright, the founder of Brights Zoo, stated that the attention garnered by this exceptional birth has heightened awareness of giraffe conservation. With wild giraffe populations diminishing by 40% over the past three decades, the urgency of protecting these animals is clear.

As the zoo searches for the perfect name for the remarkable giraffe, the public is invited to contribute suggestions on their Facebook page. Among the shortlisted options are Kipekee, Firyali, Shakiri, and Jamella, as reported by the media.

US urges Xi to press Putin on alleged “war crimes” in Ukraine

Xi Jinping
  • NSC spokesman urged Mr. Xi to persuade his Russian counterpart to withdraw troops from Ukraine.
  • According to John Kirby, seeking a cease-fire will not suffice.
  • There are fears that China’s support for Russia will evolve into military support.

The US has urged China President Xi Jinping to persuade Vladimir Putin to “halt the war crimes” in Ukraine.

The two will meet again for official talks on Tuesday, during Mr. Xi’s first visit to Moscow since the invasion.

The National Security Council spokesman for the White House urged Mr. Xi to persuade his Russian counterpart to withdraw troops from Ukraine.

According to John Kirby, seeking a cease-fire will not suffice.

“We hope that President Xi will press President Putin to cease bombing Ukrainian cities, hospitals, and schools, to halt the war crimes and atrocities, and to withdraw his troops,” he said.

“But we are concerned that instead, China will reiterate calls for a ceasefire that leaves Russian forces inside Ukraine’s sovereign territory and any ceasefire that does not address the removal of Russian forces from Ukraine would effectively ratify Russia’s illegal conquests.”

Hours of informal talks

Mr. Xi and Mr. Putin spent more than four hours of “informal” talks on Monday, with more official meetings slated for Tuesday.

There are fears that China’s support for Russia, which is presently centered on technology and trade, will evolve into military support, potentially involving artillery shells.

Mr. Putin has said he will consider a 12-point plan provided by Mr. Xi to “settle the acute crisis in Ukraine”.

“We’re always open for a negotiation process,” Mr. Putin said, as the leaders called each other “dear friends”.

Last month, China announced its strategy to end the war, which includes “ceasing hostilities” and resuming peace talks.

China’s approach made no mention of Russia’s withdrawal from Ukraine, which Ukraine has stressed is a prerequisite for any negotiations.

Unilateral sanctions

Instead, it talked of “respecting the sovereignty of all countries”, adding that “all parties must stay rational and exercise restraint” and “gradually de-escalate the situation”.

The plan also opposed the use of “unilateral sanctions,” which was interpreted as a veiled criticism of Ukraine’s Western backers.

A military band welcomed Mr. Xi to Moscow on the first day of his three-day tour on Monday. Mr. Putin lauded China for “observing the principles of fairness” and fighting for “undivided security for every country”.

He added that China had made” a tremendous leap forward in its development” in recent years, remarking: “We even feel a bit envious.”

In return, Mr. Xi told Mr. Putin: “Under your strong leadership, Russia has made great strides in its prosperous development. I am confident that the Russian people will continue to give you their firm support.”

Before Mr. Xi arrived, Mr. Putin stated in China’s People’s Daily that “aggressive” US behavior would not harm the two countries.

Ukrainian authorities have officially emphasized their shared values with China, such as respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, but secretly, they have lobbied for a meeting or phone call between President Volodymyr Zelensky and Mr. Xi.

Positive role

Mr. Kirby, the US security spokesperson, repeated this, urging Mr. Xi to “take a positive role” in the effort to end the dispute by communicating with Mr. Zelenskyy.

Russia provides energy to Beijing’s massive economy and is viewed as a partner in opposing the US.

In another event, Japan’s Prime Minister, Fumio Kishida, has indicated that he will visit Kyiv on Tuesday to meet with President Zelensky. Following Russia’s invasion, he is expected to express sympathy and support for Ukraine.

Mr. Xi’s visit to Moscow comes just days after the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin on war crimes charges. This means that Mr. Putin might be detained in 123 nations, however, neither China nor Russia is on that list.

Western officials have been striving to isolate Russia since last February, following its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Yet, they have been unable to reach a worldwide agreement, with China, India, and numerous African countries refusing to denounce Mr. Putin.

Kim says North Korea must be prepared to launch a nuclear strike

North Korea
  • Kim Jong Un  accused the US and South Korea of escalating joint military manoeuvres.
  • North Korea revealed their nuclear retaliation simulation on the same day.
  • The drills allowed North Korean troops to become familiar with any unexpected circumstances.

North Korea must be ready to launch nuclear counter-attacks at any time to avert war, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said on Monday, accusing the US and South Korea of escalating joint military manoeuvres along the country’s border.

Kim’s words came after a weekend of “guiding” joint tactical drills of operational units simulating a nuclear counterattack against North Korea’s foes, which he described as “greatly improving the actual fighting capacity of the units,” according to the sources.

State media said a North Korean ballistic missile equipped with a mock nuclear warhead that was launched on Sunday flew about 800 kilometers (500 miles) before hitting a target at an altitude of 800 meters (0.5 miles) under the scenario of a tactical nuclear attack.

The drills allowed North Korean troops to become “familiar with any unexpected circumstances and make them more perfectly prepared in their active posture of making an immediate and overwhelming nuclear counterattack [at] anytime,” sources quoted Kim as saying.

Kim, who appeared in state-run media images alongside his daughter, Kim Ju Ae, said it was “very important to continuously organize and conduct such drills under the simulated conditions of an actual war.”

Ju Ae, who is thought to be around 9 years old, has been spotted numerous times with her father at missile launches in recent months.

Since Kim Il Sung’s foundation in 1948, North Korea has been administered as a hereditary dictatorship. Kim Jong Il, his son, seized command after his father died in 1994. After Kim Jong Il died, Kim Jong Un ascended to power.

North Korea revealed their nuclear retaliation simulation on the same day that US strategic bombers took part in joint air drills with South Korean forces as part of “Freedom Shield,” the two nations’ greatest combined military exercises.

The collaborative exercises included US B-1B strategic bombers, South Korean Air Force F-35A stealth aircraft, and US Air Force F-16 fighters.

In response to the combined US-South Korean war drills, North Korea increased missile launches, firing submarine missiles ahead of the exercises.

Kim accused the US and South Korea of expanding joint military drills involving American nuclear assets and claimed that his adversaries’ moves towards aggression are becoming “ever more pronounced,” prompting his call for North Korea to “increase its nuclear war deterrence exponentially,” according to sources.

North Korea’s two-day nuclear counterattack drill was divided into two parts: one for managing the nuclear strike control system, which included training to assume a “nuclear counterattack posture,” and another for “launching tactical ballistic missile tipped with a mock nuclear warhead,” according to sources.

“The drill marked an important occasion in preparing our nuclear combat force to rapidly and accurately perform its crucial mission of war deterrence and securing war initiative any moment and under any unexpected circumstances,” state media quoted Kim as saying.

Kim Dong-yub, a professor at the University of North Korean Studies and former South Korean navy commander, said North Korea’s latest exercises appeared to be “quite specific and sophisticated” compared to the spate of tests it conducted in September and October last year.

“This shows that North Korea is developing its nuclear strategy, nuclear operation doctrine, and nuclear command system,” he said.

North Korea fires suspected ballistic missile as its anti-US rhetoric intensifies

North Korea
  • The missile was launched shortly after 11 a.m. local time.
  • The missile achieved a maximum altitude of roughly 50km.
  • The Japan Coast Guard advised all vessels to wait for further information.

North Korea launched a suspected ballistic missile on Sunday, the latest in a series of provocative measures condemned by its neighbors as endangering regional peace.

According to Japan’s Ministry of Defense and the South Korean army, the missile was launched shortly after 11 a.m. local time.

According to Japan’s defense ministry, the missile achieved a maximum altitude of roughly 50km (31 miles) and flew a distance of approximately 800km (497 miles). According to the South Korean military, it was launched from the Dongchang-ri area of North Pyongan province in North Korea and landed in the sea between the Korean Peninsula and Japan.

Upon its landing, the Japan Coast Guard advised all vessels to wait for further information, avoid approaching falling debris, and report anything unusual.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) of South Korea stated that the military had increased monitoring and vigilance in anticipation of additional launches “while maintaining a full readiness posture through close cooperation with the US.”

North Korea has conducted a series of missile tests, including the launch of a long-range ballistic missile on Thursday while leaders from South Korea and Japan convened in Tokyo, as well as the launch of two cruise missiles from a submarine and two short-range ballistic missiles days earlier.

Ex-US President Donald Trump urges fans to organize protest

Donald Trump
  • Donald Trump urged his friends to organize the large-scale protest.
  • He will be the first former American president to face criminal charges.
  • It is unknown whether he will be prosecuted criminally this week, or even, in broad strokes.

Donald Trump has stated that he expects to be arrested on Tuesday and has urged his fans to organize large-scale protests.

His lawyer, however, stated that there had been no communication from law police and that the former president’s post was based only on media reporting.

Authorities have been considering indicting Mr. Trump. According to reports, it might happen as soon as next week.

If he is indicted, he will be the first former American president to face criminal charges.

This issue revolves around alleged hush money paid by Mr. Trump’s lawyer to porn star Stormy Daniels prior to the 2016 presidential election.

It is one of the numerous incidents in which the 76-year-old is being investigated, though he has not been prosecuted in any of them and denies wrongdoing in all of them.

Mr. Trump has committed to continue his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination in the 2024 election, even if he is indicted.

Attempts to investigate him in the past, including two impeachment proceedings, the Russia inquiry, and the Mar-a-Lago raid, have tended to make him more popular among his supporters; an indictment may have a similar impact.

It is unknown whether he will be prosecuted criminally this week, or even, in broad strokes, what those charges would be.

Yet, with the former president anticipating an arrest and pushing for large protests, this is uncharted territory.

Mr. Trump has a devoted following, and the 6 January 2021 attack on the US Capitol by his supporters in response to his repeated calls to protest has demonstrated that a tense situation can swiftly turn violent.

Mr. Trump said on his social networking site Truth Social on Saturday that “illegal leaks” from the Manhattan district attorney’s office “suggest” he will be jailed on Tuesday.

The district attorney’s office has yet to respond. Susan Necheles, Mr. Trump’s lawyer, said her team had not heard from law enforcement officials.

“Since this is a political prosecution, the district attorney’s office has engaged in a practice of leaking everything to the press, rather than communicating with President Trump’s attorneys as would be done in a normal case,” she said.

The Republican Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy, has blasted out at the inquiry, calling it “an outrageous abuse of power by a radical DA [district attorney]”.

He also promised to investigate whether federal funds were being used to influence elections “with politically motivated prosecutions” in a tweet.

Any indictment would make it difficult for Mr. Trump’s Republican Party opponents to determine whether to escalate their attacks on the former president while he is potentially distracted or to keep their heads down and hope for the best.

US accuses Beijing of attempting to conceal North Korean crimes

US and China
  • The United States accused China g to conceal North Korea’s crimes by blocking the webcast of an informal meeting.
  • China and Russia claim that the Security Council should not consider human rights problems.
  • They argue that such gatherings should be limited to other United Nations organizations.

The United States accused China on Friday of seeking to conceal North Korea’s crimes by blocking the webcast of an informal meeting of United Nations Security Council members on Pyongyang’s human rights violations.

“Some council members are all too willing to shield the regime from accountability,” U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield told the meeting in a veiled reference to China and Russia.

China and Russia claim that the Security Council, which has 15 members and is responsible for ensuring international peace and security, should not consider human rights problems. They argue that such gatherings should be limited to other United Nations organizations such as the Human Rights Council or the General Assembly.

Not constructive

The meeting, co-hosted by the US and Albania, was “not constructive in any way,” according to Chinese envoy Xing Jisheng.

“Instead of easing tension, it may rather intensify the conflict and therefore is an irresponsible move. Using U.N. WebTV for live broadcast is a waste of U.N. resources,” he said.

To allow such informal meetings to be streamed by the UN, all 15 council members must agree, and diplomats claimed it was unusual for a broadcast to be banned. Despite China’s decision, the meeting on Friday was open to the public and journalists.

Thomas-Greenfield said North Korea’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs were “inextricably linked to the regime’s human rights abuses.”

“The pursuit of weapons of mass destruction always trumps human rights and humanitarian needs of its people,” she said. “(North Korean leader) Kim Jong Un has chosen ammunition instead of nutrition, missiles over humankind.”

North Korea did not attend the summit. The United Nations delegation did not respond to a request for comment.

Pyongyang disputes claims of human rights violations and blames sanctions for North Korea’s dismal humanitarian situation. Since 2006, the country has been sanctioned by the United Nations for its ballistic missile and nuclear programs.

“The feigned hypocritical concern of the West about human rights in North Korea isn’t fooling anybody,” Russian diplomat Stepan Kuzmenkov told the meeting. “Everybody knows full well that the U.S. uses human rights to settle scores with governments not to their liking.”

According to diplomats, the United Nations Security Council will conduct a formal meeting on Monday in response to North Korea’s launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile on Thursday.

US Resumes Drone Flights Over Black Sea After Russia Intercept

United states
  • RQ-4 Global Hawk drone flew a mission to the region on Friday.
  • The incident will not prevent Washington from performing such missions, says the pentagon.
  • The incident served as a reminder of the danger of direct conflict between the US and Russia.

Two US sources stated on Friday that the US has resumed surveillance drone flights over the Black Sea region following a Russian fighter jet intercept on Tuesday that resulted in the downing of a US surveillance drone.

According to officials, an RQ-4 Global Hawk drone flew a mission to the region on Friday, the first such operation since the Tuesday incident. Pentagon officials have repeatedly stated this week that the incident will not prevent Washington from performing such missions.

Yet, the downing of a US MQ-9 drone on Tuesday was the first direct US-Russian encounter since the start of the Ukraine war, exacerbating already strained relations between Washington and Moscow as both governments publicly exchanged blame.

Sharp maneuvering

Russia has refuted US charges that its two Su-24 fighter fighters operated dangerously around the unmanned US aircraft, instead blaming the disaster on “sharp maneuvering” by the drone.

The Pentagon, on the other hand, published a video on Thursday showing a Russian Su-27 fighter jet flying very close to the drone and dumping gasoline near it, in what US officials claimed was an apparent attempt to harm the US aircraft as it flew.

The video also showed the video feed being lost following another near-Russian maneuver, which the Military claimed was caused by a Russian jet colliding with the drone.

The video concludes with views of the drone’s damaged propeller, which was caused by the impact, rendering the aircraft inoperable and causing it to crash into deep waters, according to the Military.

The incident in international waters served as a reminder of the danger of direct conflict between the US and Russia over Ukraine, which Moscow invaded more than a year ago and which Western allies have supported with intelligence and weaponry.

Military fight against US: North Korea claims almost 800,000 people have signed up

North Korea
  • Some 800,000 students and workers across the country expressed a desire to register.
  • North Korea launched an intercontinental ballistic missile.
  • Kim accused the US and South Korea of inflaming tensions through military drills.

North Korea claims that about 800,000 of its citizens volunteered to join or reenlist in the nation’s military to fight against the United States, North Korea’s state newspaper reported on Saturday.

Some 800,000 students and workers across the country expressed a desire to register or reenlist in the military to resist the US on Friday alone.

North Korea made the allegation after launching its Hwasong-17 intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) on Thursday in retaliation to ongoing US-South Korean military drills.

North Korea launched the intercontinental ballistic missile into the sea between the Korean peninsula and Japan on Thursday, just hours before South Korea’s president traveled to Tokyo for a summit to discuss how to resist the nuclear-armed North.

The North’s ballistic missiles are prohibited by UN Security Council resolutions, and the launch was condemned by governments in Seoul, Washington, and Tokyo.

On Monday, South Korean and US soldiers began 11 days of joint exercises called “Freedom Shield 23” to address the North’s mounting threats.

Kim accused the US and South Korea of inflaming tensions through military drills.

FBI offers $20,000 reward in case of missing American woman

FBI
  • FBI Assistant Director in charge does not believe narcotics cartels were involved in the kidnapping.
  • The agency has witness reports verifying Lopez’s kidnapping, but no additional facts.
  • The FBI did not reveal any details about the case.

The FBI has issued a $20,000 reward for information leading to the location of a 63-year-old US woman kidnapped from her home in Mexico more than a month ago.

Maria del Carmen Lopez was kidnapped on February 9 in Pueblo Nuevo, a community in the southern Mexico state of Colima, according to a notice from the FBI’s Los Angeles field office on Thursday.

According to a statement from the Colima Attorney General’s office, Lopez is also a Mexican citizen, and the office is cooperating with the FBI on the investigation.

The FBI did not reveal any details about the case, although Lopez was described as having blonde hair, brown eyes, and tattooed eyeliner.

According to FBI Assistant Director in Charge of the Los Angeles Field Office Donald Alway, federal authorities do not believe narcotics cartels were involved in the kidnapping. According to Alway, the agency has witness reports verifying Lopez’s kidnapping, but no additional facts about the case have been released.

“We are going to pursue this, and we’ll look at every avenue and we’ll follow every lead and we’ll open every door that we can find to ensure that our primary goal is to get her back safely,” he added.

The FBI’s revelation comes about two weeks after the kidnapping of four Americans, two of whom were killed, in the Mexican border city of Matamoros, and three weeks after the disappearance of three women who walked into Mexico to sell clothes at a flea market.

The Colima Attorney General’s Office started an investigation into Lopez’s disappearance on the day of the suspected kidnapping, and the Mexico Attorney General’s Specialized Prosecutor for Organized Crime has since requested to accept the case, according to a statement from Colima officials.

The Colima prosecutor’s office stated that it has shared material with Mexico federal authorities and has also worked with American agencies “in order to clarify the facts and protect the victim’s integrity.”

Anybody with information regarding Lopez’s whereabouts is urged to contact their local FBI office, submit a tip online, or contact the nearest American embassy or consulate.

Almost 100,000 Mexicans and migrants have gone missing across the country, leaving their families with little explanation and scant solace. The Mexican government’s fast response to recent American disappearances has aroused suspicions among those who blame officials for failing to respond in a number of domestic instances.

US to pay $6.5 million in lost wages to 13,000 Mexican migrants

Mexican migrant
  • 13,000 Mexican migrant workers are owed $6.5 million.
  • Mexican ministry and the US Department of ILAB are implementing the H-2A Workers’ Earnings Recovery Program.
  • It is unclear who employed these people and for how long they worked.

Some 13,000 Mexican migrant workers are owed $6.5 million in unpaid wages, according to a tweet from the United States Department of Labor’s Bureau of International Labor Affairs, which announced a joint effort with Mexico to locate and compensate the workers.

“This program will return millions of dollars in back wages to Mexican nationals who participated in US temporary foreign worker programs,” tweeted Ken Salazar, the United States Ambassador to Mexico, on Tuesday.

Salazar noted that the Mexican ministry and the US Department of Labor’s Bureau of International Labor Affairs are implementing the H-2A Workers’ Earnings Recovery Program to ensure that workers receive their pay.

Backbone of America

Skilled foreign agricultural laborers are the backbone of American agriculture, and they are frequently in the country on H-2A seasonal visas. It is unclear who employed these people and for how long they worked when they did not receive their full salaries.

According to a news release from Mexico’s Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare, the money owed to these thousands of workers was recovered by the US Department of Labor after it was unable to identify the individuals in order to distribute their checks.

The partnership will attempt to locate the migrant workers who are believed to have “received less than the legally established salary from their employers in the United States,” according to a press release by Mexico’s Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare.

The United States is anticipated to deliver Mexico a list of workers who are “owed wages and overtime.” Mexico will next search official databases for the personnel and notify them of their checks.

“Together, we watch over labor rights,” Mexico’s Secretary of Labor and Social Welfare Luisa Alcalde tweeted on Tuesday.

US drone downing: Russia will attempt to recover drone fragments

US drone
  • The massive MQ-9 Reaper drone crashed into the ocean.
  • Moscow was attempting to locate the aircraft.
  • “I don’t know whether we’ll be able to retrieve it or not but it has to be done,” Mr. Patrushev said.

Russia announced on Wednesday that it will attempt to recover the remains of an American drone that had crashed into the Black Sea.

On Tuesday, the massive MQ-9 Reaper drone crashed into the ocean.

The US said it brought down the damaged drone after it became “unflyable” after a Russian plane clipped its propeller, but Moscow denies this.

Russian security council secretary Nikolai Patrushev stated on state television that Moscow was attempting to locate the aircraft.

“I don’t know whether we’ll be able to retrieve it or not but it has to be done,” Mr. Patrushev said.

A confirmation of War

He also said that the drone’s presence in the Black Sea was “confirmation” that the US was directly involved in the war.

Top Washington official John Kirby said the US was also seeking for the aircraft, but warned that if Russia beat them to it, “their potential to use relevant intelligence will be significantly reduced”.

General Mark Milley, America’s top military commander, emphasized that the US has taken “mitigating measures” to guarantee there was nothing of value aboard the downed drone.

He predicted that retrieving the drone would be difficult, adding that the water where it crashed was anywhere between 4,000ft and 5,000ft (1,200m to 1,500m) deep.

According to US military officials, the incident occurred on Tuesday morning and lasted approximately 30-40 minutes.

The Pentagon said in a statement that Russian jets poured gasoline on the drone several times prior to the crash.

According to Pentagon spokesman Brig Gen Pat Ryder, the drone was “unflyable and uncontrollable,” and the crash likely destroyed the Russian aircraft as well.

Russia has denied any touch between its two Su-27 fighter jets and the US drone.

Sharp maneuver

The drone fell after a “sharp maneuver,” according to Russia’s defense ministry, and it was flying with its transponders (communication devices) turned off.

Lloyd Austin, the US Defense Secretary, revealed he met with his Russian colleague, Sergei Shoigu, the day after the drone was shot down.

Russia’s defense ministry blamed the event on “increasing reconnaissance actions against the interests of the Russian Federation” in a statement made following the phone contact. It also branded US drone missions off the coast of Crimea “provocative”.

The United States and the United Kingdom have historically gone to extreme lengths to recover their technology following catastrophes.

They recovered the wreckage of their F-35 stealth fighter plane after it sank in the South China Sea.

On the surface, the Military appears to be less concerned by the loss of a Reaper drone. It’s older technology, and many have been lost in the past.

And attempting to recover a downed drone in deep waters near a war zone, with Russian ships and submarines patrolling, may pose even greater risks of escalation.

Since Russia’s annexation of nearby Crimea in 2014, tensions have risen over the Black Sea.

Increase in surveillance flights

During Russia’s full-fledged invasion of Ukraine, the United States and the United Kingdom have increased surveillance flights, always flying in international airspace.

The missing Reaper may have carried a surveillance pod capable of absorbing electronic data such as radar waves.

The US Department of Defense said in a news release that the surveillance trips are designed to acquire information that helps strengthen security for Europe and aids “allied partners”.

The US is said to have already shared intelligence with Ukraine, including assistance in sinking a Russian ship in the Black Sea.

According to Ukraine’s foreign minister, occurrences like the downing of an American drone over the Black Sea are unavoidable until Russia departs Crimea.

It is described as “As long as Russia holds Crimea, these types of incidents will be unavoidable, and the Black Sea will not be a safe place,” Dmytro Kuleba warned.

Although Russia took Crimea in 2014, the vast majority of countries still consider it to be part of Ukraine.

The sources questioned Mr. Kuleba if the US and its allies would be more careful in the aftermath of the drone disaster.

“If the West wants to demonstrate its weakness, it should certainly demonstrate its cautiousness after an incident like this, but I don’t have a feeling that this is the mood in capitals,” he replied.

US MILITARY VOWED

“The mood is not to escalate but nor is the mood to lean under the pressure – the physical or rhetorical pressure – of Russia.”

US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin vowed the military would “continue to fly and operate” wherever international law allows.”

After being asked to confer with officials in Washington, Russian Ambassador Anatoly Antonov stated that the drone incident was viewed as a “provocation” by Moscow.

From the Kremlin’s point of view, Mr. Antonov added: “The unacceptable activity of the US military in the close proximity to our borders is a cause for concern.”

According to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, there has been no high-level interaction between Moscow and Washington regarding the event.

He did, however, state that Russia would never refuse to engage in meaningful conversation.

US drone crash: A perilous moment

drone crash
  • This appears to be the most serious publicly acknowledged US-Russia conflict.
  • It raises many questions and signals a potentially dangerous period.
  • The whole episode lasted roughly 30-40 minutes.

The collision between Russian jets and a US drone, which ended in the drone plunging into the Black Sea, appears to be the most serious publicly acknowledged US-Russia conflict since Russia‘s all-out invasion of Ukraine over a year ago.

As so, it raises many questions and signals a potentially dangerous period.

According to John Kirby of the United States National Security Council (NSC), there had been other intercepts “even in recent weeks,” but this one was unique.

Could it have been a mistake?

“Based on the actions of the Russian pilots, it’s clear that it was unsafe, unprofessional,” was the verdict of the Pentagon’s Press Secretary, Air Force Brigadier General Pat Ryder.

“I think the actions speak for themselves.”

Is Russia’s pilots’ behavior – allegedly pouring fuel in the route of the drone and then colliding with it – a serious escalation?

According to the Pentagon, the whole episode lasted roughly 30-40 minutes.

According to Gen Ryder, there was no direct communication between the Soviet and US armies at the time.

According to US sources, the Russian Su-27 jets involved “likely” received some damage, indicating that the collision was not intentional.

“I do know that the state department is raising our concerns about the incident directly with the Russian government,” he added.

What, if anything, does the incident portend for the future of US drone operations over the Black Sea, as well as the crucial monitoring such flights provide for Ukraine?

“If the message is that they want to deter or dissuade us from flying or operating in international airspace over the Black Sea,” Mr. Kirby told, “then that message will fail because that is not going to happen”.

Not surprisingly, Russia wishes to make such efforts as difficult as possible for Ukraine’s supporters.

Washington is being tight-lipped about what has happened to the drone.

After the collision, US remote pilots were forced to bring it down in the Black Sea.

General Ryder refused to identify where it landed or whether the Russian navy attempted to recover it.

Audio recordings surfacing on social media appear to imply that a Russian recovery effort was in progress. However, this has not been confirmed.

Certainly, Washington would be upset if such sensitive monitoring technology came into the hands of Russia.

For Joe Biden, who is willing to defend Ukraine for “as long as it takes,” this is a tricky situation.

Not only is Western armament assisting Ukraine in repelling Russia’s assault.

It also has a massive amount of real-time intelligence on all aspects of Russia’s military actions, such as the movement of ships in the Black Sea and the launch of missiles intended at targets around Ukraine.

Kyiv relies significantly on information flow, from guarding Ukraine’s crucial national infrastructure to organizing its own offensive operations.

For obvious reasons, US authorities would not discuss what, if any, extra safeguards will be implemented in its monitoring operations.

America wants to keep them going but is wary of deploying force and risking a more direct confrontation with Moscow.
