Excessive salt consumption can be the cause of death

salt
  • The world is “off-track” to meet its goal of halving global sodium consumption by 2025.
  • One of the most important minerals for the body is sodium.
  • Too much of it raises the risk of heart disease, stroke, and early death.

In its initial study on reducing sodium intake, the World Health Organization (WHO) stated that excessive salt intake is one of the leading causes of death and disease worldwide. According to the analysis, the world is “off-track” to meet its goal of halving global sodium consumption by 2025.

One of the most important minerals for the body is sodium, but too much of it raises the risk of heart disease, stroke, and early death. While sodium (sodium chloride) is mostly found in table salt, it can also be found in other condiments like sodium glutamate.

According to the WHO’s global estimate, by 2030, the implementation of cost-effective salt reduction strategies might prevent the loss of 7 million lives worldwide.

Only nine nations, including Brazil, Chile, the Czech Republic, Lithuania, Malaysia, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Spain, and Uruguay, have an extensive set of suggested measures to lower sodium intake.

According to estimates, the average daily salt consumption across the globe is 10.8 grammes, more than twice the WHO recommendation of less than 5 grammes (one teaspoon).

Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director general of the WHO, said, “Unhealthy diets are a leading cause of death and disease globally, and excessive sodium intake is one of the main culprits. This report shows that most countries are yet to adopt any mandatory sodium reduction policies, leaving their people at risk of heart attack, stroke, and other health problems. WHO calls on all countries to implement the ‘Best Buys’ for sodium reduction, and on manufacturers to implement the WHO benchmarks for sodium content in food.”

The four “best buy” strategies recommended by the health organisation to lower salt levels may help prevent noncommunicable diseases include:

  • Reducing the salt content of foods and establishing goals for the quantity of sodium in meals and foods
  • Limiting salt or sodium-rich foods in public institutions like hospitals, schools, workplaces, and nursing homes through establishing public food procurement programmes
  • Front-of-package information that enables buyers to choose items with less sodium
  • Campaigns in the media and behaviour change communication to cut back on salt and sodium consumption

There is growing proof that consuming too much sodium increases the chance of developing other illnesses like obesity, renal disease, osteoporosis, and stomach cancer.

Spanish authorities discover the first possible case of Marburg disease

  • Marburg disease has quarantined over 200 people in Equatorial Guinea.
  • There are no licensed vaccinations or antiviral medications to treat it.
  • The Marburg virus can have a death rate of up to 88%.

Spain has discovered its first probable case of Marburg disease, a fatal infectious disease that has quarantined over 200 people in Equatorial Guinea, according to health officials in the Spanish region of Valencia on Saturday.

A 34-year-old male who had just visited Equatorial Guinea has been relocated from a private hospital to an isolation unit at Valencia’s Hospital La Fe until tests are conducted, according to regional health authorities.

According to the World Health Organization, the Marburg virus can have a death rate of up to 88%. (WHO). There are no licensed vaccinations or antiviral medications to treat it.

On February 13, Equatorial Guinea isolated almost 200 people and limited movement in its Kie-Ntem district, where the hemorrhagic fever was initially detected.

According to the WHO, the small central African country has reported nine deaths and 16 suspected cases of the disease, with symptoms including fever, tiredness, blood-stained vomit, and diarrhea.

The WHO said that it was expanding its epidemiological surveillance in Equatorial Guinea.

Cameroonian officials discovered two potential cases of Marburg disease on February 13 in Olamze, a commune near the Equatorial Guinea border, according to the region’s public health delegate, Robert Mathurin Bidjang, on February 14.

Cameroon had restricted mobility along the border to attempt to avoid transmission.

Spain approves Europe’s first paid ‘menstrual leave’

menstrual leave
  • Only a few nations around the world grant menstrual leave.
  • Menstrual leave was included in a larger bill that improves access to abortion services.
  • The new law also abolishes a condition put in place by a previous conservative administration in 2015.

The Spanish parliament approved a law on Thursday offering paid medical leave to women experiencing extreme period pain, making Spain the first nation in Europe to do so.

The measure, which was approved by 185 votes to 154 votes against, is intended to end a taboo on the matter, according to Spain’s left-wing government.

Only a few nations around the world, including Japan, Indonesia, and Zambia, already grant menstrual leave.

Irene Montero, the minister for equality, tweeted that “it is a historic day for feminist development.” She claims that the decision is a step towards addressing a health issue that has mainly gone unaddressed.

According to the law, employees who are having period pain are entitled to take as much time off as they require, with the state social security system—not employers—covering the cost of the sick time.

Although the period of sick leave is not set in the law, it requires a doctor’s clearance, just as paid leave for other medical reasons.

According to the Spanish Gynaecology and Obstetrics Society, a third of women experience extremely painful periods.

Once the law was initially adopted by the cabinet in May 2022, Montero declared that “periods will no longer be taboo.”

“No more hiding the reality that we are in agony that prevents us from working, no more arriving at work on time and taking medicines,”

Unions and politicians disagree

Nonetheless, the act sowed discord among unions and politicians alike.

One of Spain’s largest unions, the CCOO, hailed the action as a significant “legislative advance” in recognising a problem that had previously been “ignored.”

However, the UGT, Spain’s other major union, cautioned that it might stigmatise women in the workplace and impede their “access to the labour market” indirectly. The Popular Party, the largest right-wing opposition party, shared this view (PP).

Menstrual leave was included in a larger bill that improves access to abortion services in public hospitals, a right that faces challenges in a nation with a strong Catholic heritage.

Fewer than 15% of abortions carried out in the nation take place in public institutions, primarily due to medical professionals’ moral objections.

The new law also abolishes a condition put in place by a previous conservative administration in 2015 and permits adolescents aged 16 and 17 to obtain an abortion without parental consent.

Spain, a pioneer in women’s rights in Europe, decriminalised abortion in 1985, and it approved a law in 2010 allowing most women to choose an abortion freely within the first 14 weeks of pregnancy.

Spain: Man arrested after fatal machete attack at Spanish church

Spain
  • The priest was attacked and seriously injured.
  • The suspect was quickly disarmed and arrested.
  • The incident is being investigated as a terror-related incident.

Spain: A man wielding a machete attacked two churches in southern Spain, killing one and injuring at least one other.

The suspect first entered the church of San Isidro in Algeciras, where the priest was attacked and seriously injured, according to the interior ministry.

The alleged attacker then went to another church and stabbed a verger to death.

The suspect was quickly disarmed and arrested.

According to the Interior Ministry, “just after 19:00 local time (18:00 GMT) this evening, a man entered the church of San Isidro in Algeciras, where, armed with a machete, he attacked the priest, seriously injuring him.”

“He then entered the church of Nuestra Senora de La Palma and attacked the verger after causing damage.”

According to the statement, the alleged victim managed to get outside the church but was attacked again and killed.

“Moments later, (the assailant) was disarmed and arrested, and is currently in police custody,” according to the ministry.

The incident is being investigated as a terror-related incident.

“I send my deepest condolences to the families of the verger who died in this terrible attack,” Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on Twitter.

The incident was condemned as a “brutal and vicious attack” by the local Muslim community in Algeciras.

Algeciras is a popular ferry port that connects the Iberian Peninsula to Morocco and Spain’s north African enclave of Ceuta.

Spain smashes ring exploiting Ukrainians, operating illegal tobacco factories

Spain
  • Police in Spain have demolished three illicit tobacco factories.
  • Ukrainian refugees were forced to work in deplorable conditions.
  • Authorities seized tobacco products worth €37.5 million.

Spain: Police in Spain have demolished three illicit tobacco factories where Ukrainian refugees were forced to work in deplorable conditions.

The operations were discovered in three different regions of Spain, and 27 persons were apprehended.

The gang is accused of trafficking massive amounts of tobacco, which was then transformed into counterfeit cigarettes.

The plants could produce more than 500,000 cigarette packs each day, which were distributed across country and overseas.

Spain busts a ring that exploits Ukrainians by operating illegal tobacco factories. The Ukrainians, who had fled Russia’s invasion of their country, were “crammed” into prefabricated shelters within the factories, according to police.

They worked long hours and did not leave to avoid being discovered, as some had entered the country illegally.

Meanwhile, the organization’s leaders lived a “life of luxury,” allegedly laundering money for their tobacco smuggling operation.

During the raid, authorities seized tobacco products worth €37.5 million ($41 million; £33 million), luxury vehicles, jewelry, and large amounts of cash. More than 20 homes, industrial buildings, and retail establishments were searched.

According to police, the group was also expanding its production by establishing enormous marijuana plantations.

Europol, the European police organization, assisted in the investigation.

According to the United Nations, nearly eight million Ukrainian refugees have fled Russia’s February 2022 invasion across Europe. In Spain, over 160,000 have been registered.

In November, European Parliament lawmakers reported that labor exploitation of Ukrainians was on the rise, claiming that the urgency of their situation and language barriers sometimes forced refugees to accept informal and low-paying work.
