Ahsan Iqbal announces model Teachers Training Center for quality education

Ahsan Iqbal Commits to Strengthening Pakistan’s Economy

ISLAMABAD: Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Professor Ahsan Iqbal said the government would establish a state-of-the-art Teachers Training Center within two years to improve education quality and produce manpower meeting contemporary needs.

Making this announcement at the launch of the District Education Performance Index-2023, he said the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) government had initiated this project during its last tenure but couldn’t complete it due to political instability.

He said the center, in collaboration with provincial education departments, would be the best in South Asia, where students could get quality education focusing on improving their critical thinking, creativity, problem-solving and team learning skills.

“It will be a paradigm shift from memorization-based education,” Iqbal said, adding that the initiative would also reform the existing examination system.

Ahsan Iqbal said that memorization-based education was irrelevant in the modern era, where innovation and creativity derived development.

He believed that the country could not achieve the required goals of progress and prosperity without improving the education standard and developing human resources. “The development of infrastructure alone cannot be useful.”

Citing examples from the world, the minister said no single country has attained development and prosperity without achieving at least a 90 percent literacy rate.

“Development is not possible without achieving the universal primary enrollment education target.”

He also mentioned some other challenges, including the lack of an export-led economy and political instability.

“Unfortunately, our socio-economic platform is fractured due to which we are enlisted in the low-middle income countries’ club and among the backward nations,” he said highlighting the importance of economic and social alignment for the national development.”

PPP files review petition on SC reserved seats’ judgment

PPP

ISLAMABAD:  Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) filed a review petition against the Supreme Court’s July 12 verdict on reserved seats allotted to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) after the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) had filed review plea.

On behalf of the PPP, Lawyer Farooq H. Naek filed a review appeal in the Supreme Court, in which 11 persons, including Hamid Raza, the Election Commission of Pakistan and the Sunni Ittehad Council, have been made parties.

In PPP’s appeal, it has been argued that the Chairman Sunni Ittehad Council Hamid Raza participated in the elections as an independent candidate, if no one from the SIC contested the election, reserved seats cannot be given.

It has been said in the appeal that PTI did not file an application, neither became a party. The PTI cannot be given reserved seats and PTI has been given seats without asking.

The People’s Party raised the question whether specific seats can be left vacant or given to a party that has contested the elections. “Can specific seats be given to a party whose candidate has not won a national or provincial seat”.

In its review appeal, the PPP has requested to withdraw the July 12 judgment on reserved seats.

It should be noted that earlier, PML-N has filed an appeal to review the decision on specific seats, while no decision has been taken by the government in this regard.

On July 12, the Supreme Court upheld the petition of the Sunni Ittehad Council regarding the reserved seats and annulled the decision of the ECP and the Peshawar High Court.

PML-N files review plea against SC’s reserve seats verdict

PML-N

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has filed a review petition against the Supreme Court’s decision to give reserved seats to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf(PTI).

PML-N in the petition filed by the League, 11 parties, including the Sunni Ittehad Council, Hamid Raza and the Election Commission of Pakistan, have been made parties, while in the petition, a stay order injunction has been requested on the decision of the Supreme Court on July 12.

It has been argued in the petition that the decision of the Supreme Court is completely silent on a few points, should the Sunni Ittehad Council get specific seats. The decision is silent, should such a party get reserved seats which has not submitted the list itself.  The verdict is silent.

The petition states that whether an independent candidate can join a party whose one winning candidate is not present in the assembly. Should the seats be left vacant or distributed among the parties that contested the elections. The Supreme Court heard a lot of points but the short judgment is silent on many important points.

Lawmakers call for revisions on taxes for agriculture, baby milk

Lawmakers

ISLAMABAD: The lawmakers in the National Assembly called on the government to revisit the increase in taxes on the agriculture sector, baby milk, salaried class, and stationery items in the budget for 2024-25.

Participating in the debate in the House, Chief Whip of the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), Malik Aamir Dogar urged the government to reduce taxes on essential items like milk and stationery.

Criticizing the lack of relief for both common people and businesses, he said that higher electricity bills were making difficult for exporters to compete globally due to rising production costs.

He said that agriculture was the backbone of the economy and should be more incentivized to strengthen the national economy and support the farmers.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Lawmaker, Shahid Usman Ibrahim acknowledging both the positive and negative aspects of the budget, said that under the current challenging circumstances, the government presented a positive budget.

He said that the PML-N government saved Pakistan from financial collapse and set it on the right path, affirming that his party would continue to protect the country’s interests.

Highlighting that agriculture contributes 24 percent of the GDP and involves two-thirds of the population, he said that the government had allocated Rs 5 billion for the agricultural sector in the budget.

The lawmaker also claimed that inflation dropped from 38 percent to 11.8 percent and that the stock market reached new heights, with the index hitting 78,000 points for the first time.

He stressed the importance of implementing the structural reforms mentioned by the Finance Minister and reducing government expenditures.

Another PML-N Member, Anwar-ul-Haq Chaudhry, appreciated the government for presenting a balanced and people-friendly budget under the current adverse circumstances.

He attributed the drop in inflation to 11.8 percent to the government’s concrete measures over the past three to four months, adding that there had been a significant reduction in petroleum prices and anticipated further decreases, potentially bringing inflation to single digits.

Anwar-ul-Haq expressed confidence in Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s ability to tackle these economic challenges.
