Russia has supplied India with weapons worth $13 billion in last five years

Russia
  • Russia has supplied India with around $13 billion in weaponry.
  • Military equipment worth more than $10 billion.
  • India is the world’s largest importer of Russian weaponry.

Russian state news media reported late on Sunday that Russia has supplied India with around $13 billion in weaponry over the last five years, and that New Delhi has placed orders with Moscow for weapons and military equipment worth more than $10 billion.

India is the world’s largest importer of Russian weaponry, accounting for roughly 20% of Moscow’s current order book, and the Indian government has not openly criticized Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has appealed for talks and diplomacy to end the 12-month conflict.

In response to the invasion, which Moscow describes as a “special military operation,” dozens of Western countries placed sanctions on Russia, including penalties on weaponry.

According to Dmitry Shugayev, the head of Russia’s Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation, India, China, and several Southeast Asian countries have retained their interest in purchasing Russian armaments.

Russia’s main partners

“Despite the unprecedented pressure on India from Western countries led by the United States in connection with Russia’s special operation in Ukraine, it continues to be one of Russia’s main partners in the field of military-technical cooperation,” Interfax agency quoted Shugayev as saying.

According to Interfax, annual arms shipments were around $14-15 billion, while the order book has remained stable at roughly $50 billion.

Shugayev stated that Asian buyers are particularly interested in Russia’s S-400 Triumf missile defense systems, short-range surface-to-air missile systems such as the Osa, Pechora, or Strela, as well as Su-30 aircraft, MiG-29 helicopters, and drones.

According to the Russian state news agency TASS, Russia will display over 200 samples of armaments and military equipment at the 14th international aerospace show Aero India 2023, which begins on Monday in Bengaluru.

At the show this week, India is looking for military planes worth billions of dollars, finalizing jetliner deals to suit civilian demand, and pressuring global aviation makers to build more locally.

Berlusconi of Italy says he will not seek a meeting with Zelenskyy

Berlusconi
  • The former Italian Prime Minister blames the Ukrainian President for the conflict with Russia.
  • Berlusconi stated that if Zelenskyy had ceased bombing the two Donbas separatist republics, the war would not have occurred.
  • Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni accused France of undermining EU unity in Ukraine.

Rome: Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi said on Sunday that if he were still in charge, he would not seek a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymir Zelenskyy because he blames the Ukrainian President for the conflict with Russia.

Berlusconi, 86, had boasted of his closeness with Russian President Vladimir Putin until Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last September when he declared Putin had been pushed into the war and wanted “decent people” in charge of Kyiv.

Berlusconi, the leader of the country’s ruling coalition’s conservative Forza Italia party, was commenting after Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni accused France of undermining EU unity on Ukraine by hosting a Franco-German dinner in Paris with Zelenskyy that excluded other European allies.

“I would never have gone talking to Zelenskyy because we are witnessing the devastation of his country and the slaughter of its soldiers and civilians,” Berlusconi told journalists after voting at a polling station for a regional election in Lombardy.

He also stated that if Zelenskyy had ceased bombing the two Donbas separatist republics, the war would not have occurred. “So I judge this gentleman’s behavior very, very gentleman,” Berlusconi added.

Meloni’s office said the Italian government’s support for Ukraine is “firm and convinced, as clearly stated in the program and as confirmed in all the parliamentary votes of the majority supporting the executive”.

NATO should hold emergency summit over Nord Stream blasts, says Russia

NATO
  • Russia’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson asked NATO to convene an emergency meeting.
  • US naval divers had destroyed the pipelines with explosives on President Joe Biden’s orders.
  • Sweden and Denmark have decided that the pipes were deliberately blown up.

NATO should convene an emergency meeting to discuss the latest discoveries regarding the September explosions at the Nord Stream gas pipelines, according to Russia’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova late Saturday.

Investigative journalist Seymour Hersh, who won the Pulitzer Prize in 1970, said in a blog post on Wednesday, citing an unnamed source, that US naval divers had destroyed the pipelines with explosives on President Joe Biden’s orders.

The White House condemned as “utterly baseless and pure fiction” the suggestion that the US was behind the Nord Stream gas pipeline explosions, which transport Russian gas to Germany.

Sweden and Denmark, whose exclusive economic zones the blasts happened, have decided that the pipes were deliberately blown up, but have not stated who might be to blame.

The incident has been described as “an act of sabotage” by the United States and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The unidentified explosions that triggered the ruptures have been blamed on the West by Moscow. Neither party has shown any evidence.

“There are more than enough facts here: the explosion of the pipeline, the presence of a motive, circumstantial evidence obtained by journalists,” Zakharova said on the Telegram messaging platform.

“So when will an emergency NATO summit meet to review the situation?”

Ukraine forces hold frontline in Donetsk, Kyiv’s top military commander says

Ukraine
  • Russia conducts 50 attacks each day in Donetsk.
  • Ukraine is still holding Bakhmut and is attempting to “stabilize” the frontline around the town.
  • Ukrainian forces have managed to maintain the position.

LVIV: Ukraine forces hold defense along the frontline in Donetsk, including the besieged town of Bakhmut, with the fiercest battles raging for the cities of Vuhledar and Maryinka, Kyiv’s top military commander said on Saturday.

According to Valeriy Zaluzhnyi, commander-in-chief of Ukraine’s Armed Forces, Russia conducts 50 attacks each day in Donetsk, a territory in Ukraine’s southeast that Moscow has been attempting to entirely seize.

“Fierce fighting continues in the area of Vuhledar and Maryinka,” Zaluzhnyi said in a Telegram message after a call with U.S. General Mark Milley.

“We reliably hold the defense. In some areas of the front, we have managed to regain previously lost positions and gained a foothold.”

Zaluzhnyi did not indicate the location of the gains. He stated that Ukraine is still holding Bakhmut and is attempting to “stabilize” the frontline around the town.

Heavy resistance from Ukraine

The head of Russia’s Wagner mercenary squad claimed on Saturday that his soldiers are experiencing heavy resistance from Ukrainian defenders around Bakhmut.

Britain reported on Friday that Russian forces were making progress north of Bakhmut but were having difficulty attacking Vuhledar, some 150 kilometers (93 miles) farther south.

It is impossible to independently establish either side’s control regions, as fighting along the frontline has decreased in recent months to what the Ukrainian defense ministry refers to as “crawling” attempts to progress slowly.

According to Ukraine’s military analyst Oleh Zhdanov, despite Russian pressure in Maryinka, a practically deserted and damaged tiny city that has been on the frontlines since the war began a year ago, Ukrainian forces have managed to maintain the position.

“Fighting is going on in the city center, but there have been no changes over the past 24 hours,” Zhdanov said in a social media video.

Yevgeny Prigozhin, the leader of Wagner, claimed it could take two years for Moscow to control the entire Donetsk and Luhansk areas of Ukraine. Last year, Moscow claimed both as “republics” of Russia, a move criticized by the majority of UN member states as unconstitutional.

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and other military officials have been on a diplomatic marathon in recent months trying to secure more Western weapons and fighter aircraft.

“The key to success on the battlefield is effective fire damage, which requires an appropriate amount of weapons and ammunition,” Zaluzhnyi said.

Spurred by the Ukraine conflict Russia’s ‘Women’s Guard’ learn to shoot

Russia
  • Russian women are practicing different firing positions with Soviet-designed Kalashnikov weapons.
  • Women have gathered in a gym near the Ural mountains.
  • Women think that they should learn to protect themselves and their loved ones if something happens in the future.

A group of Russian women with elaborate manicures and camouflage outfits are practicing different firing positions with Soviet-designed Kalashnikov weapons, first aiming at their knees and then their bellies.

The gym where the women have gathered in Yekaterinburg, Russia, near the Ural Mountains, is some 2,000 kilometers (1,200 miles) from the Ukrainian frontline.

However, the year-long battle in the eastern area of Donetsk has instilled new militaristic fervor throughout Russia and anxieties that the struggle could return home.

“We thought that if something happens, if — God forbid — there is an attack or some kind of danger, we should learn to protect ourselves and our loved ones,” activist and founder of the group, Olga Smetanina

“I love Russia very much,” the 36-year-old mother-of-two said, sporting a cap emblazoned with the letter Z, symbolizing the Russian intervention.

The course is part of an initiative dubbed “The Women’s Guard of the Urals,” launched by Smetanina and other activists in September when the Kremlin announced the mobilization of hundreds of thousands of men.

Her rhetoric on Ukraine is uncannily similar to that of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who claims that Kyiv and its Western backers are Nazi sympathizers who threaten Russians.

“Recently there has been so much aggression from other countries against our Russia, against our beloved country,” Smetanina said, explaining the inspiration for the project.

Firearms, first aid, self-defense

Since Putin sent soldiers to Ukraine in February, state propaganda has been ramped up to instill pride in the Russian army.

The spike in nationalistic propaganda has prompted some Russians to enroll in military training, such as those being held in Yekaterinburg by veterans of the Ukraine assault.

Smetanina explained that her initiative arose from a proposal on Russian social media. It was an instant success.

“Women from all over Russia began calling us,” she said. “And men called to show support.”

By December, over 50 women had finished the course, which included instruction in guns, self-defense, first aid, and drone operation.

Another 50 people are already undergoing training, with a third group due to begin in April, she said.

The two-month course includes three gym workouts per week as well as shooting practice at a range outside of town.

Smetanina was pleased with how the participants did.

According to her, their shooting performance was “practically the same” as that of mobilized men who received equivalent firearms training.

Anastasia Gubankova, one of the participants, said it was only natural for her to sign up for the course because her father and husband were both military commanders.

“Of course, I hope that I won’t have to use these skills in real life. But if necessary, I will,” said the 41-year-old purchasing manager.

Someone has to protect us

Gubankova, an ardent backer of Putin’s military objectives in Ukraine, has stated that she would not object if her 19-year-old son joined the army.

“Someone needs to protect us,” she remarked, sporting a camouflage hoodie with the word Z embroidered on it.

“I was stunned when he remarked, ‘I wouldn’t be able to live with the idea that I had betrayed my grandfather who had fought for me,'” referring to the Soviet Union’s defeat of Nazi Germany.

Some of the women have long hair and use heavy makeup. Others attend lessons without taking off their rings or earrings.

Smetanina, who has long blonde hair, claimed learning to shoot a rifle or toss a bomb would never interfere with her beauty.

“I will always be beautiful. I will curl my hair and try to take care of myself in any situation,” she said.

One instructor, known as “Zulus,” who leads the first aid course, confessed he was skeptical at first.

But when he saw the women in action, he changed his mind.

“I realised I was wrong. That’s a real women’s guard,”

Smetanina is now planning a new project dubbed “The Generation Z Center” to boost patriotism among adults and children alike.

Even if Russia’s military campaign in Ukraine ends soon, Smetanina said she would continue her projects.

“We don’t know what will happen in a year, two years, a decade,” she said.

“But we will always have weapons in our hands and know how to properly hold our fists.”

Russia, Netherlands, Germany, Greece offer aid for Turkey, Syria

Turkey
  • Hundreds of people were killed, and thousands were injured.
  • 100 search and rescue personnel are ready to be dispatched.
  • Vladimir Putin expressed condolences and stated his willingness to assist.

The death toll from a massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck southeast Turkey and northern Syria early Monday is growing. Hundreds of people were killed, thousands were injured, and the death toll was anticipated to increase higher.

Russia says it is preparing to send rescue troops to Turkey to assist earthquake victims there and in neighboring Syria.

Aleksandr Kurenkov, minister of emergency circumstances, said teams of 100 search and rescue personnel are ready to be dispatched to Turkey with two Il-76 transport planes.

In telegrams to the leaders of Syria and Turkey, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed condolences and stated his willingness to assist.

Despite Russia’s international isolation as a result of Moscow’s assault on Ukraine, the offer was made.

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte has announced that a search and rescue team from the Netherlands will travel to the earthquake-ravaged region of southeastern Turkey and northern Syria.

“Terrible news about the earthquake in Turkey and Syria. Our thoughts are with all the victims of this severe natural disaster,” Rutte said in a tweet Monday. He said he had sent condolences to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The Dutch group Urban Search and Rescue send teams to catastrophe sites all around the world, comprising rescue workers, construction specialists, doctors, nurses, and sniffer dogs.

Olaf Scholz, the German Chancellor, has also pledged assistance.

Bulgaria’s Foreign Ministry has expressed condolences for the deaths in Turkey and Syria.

The neighboring country

The neighboring country has announced the dispatch of rescue teams to Turkey to assist local authorities in dealing with the consequences of the deadly earthquake.

Bulgaria’s defence minister said that two Spartan military transport planes will travel to Adana, Turkey, with emergency teams of firefighters, rescue workers, and doctors.

Greece, Turkey’s neighbor, and other countries in the region have volunteered to provide emergency aid to assist with the rescue operation following Monday’s deadly earthquake that devastated southeast Turkey and northern Syria.

“Greece is mobilizing its resources and will assist immediately … (we are) deeply saddened by the devastating earthquake disaster,” Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis wrote in a tweet. Writing in Turkish, Israeli President Isaac Herzog offered help in a message on Twitter, adding: “The State of Israel is always ready to send aid by any means possible. Our hearts go out to the families and Turkish people who are grieving at this painful time.” The Egyptian Foreign Ministry, in a statement early Monday, offered help to both Turkey and Syria following the powerful earthquake.

The devastating quake was felt in Cairo, Egypt, as well as other regions of the region. Despite tense relations between Turkey and numerous nations in the region, notably Greece and Egypt, offers of aid were made.

Saudi Arabia to remain cautious on oil output

oil
  • The energy minister reaffirmed that it will be careful about increasing oil production.
  • Analysts predict that increased demand will cause prices to rise soon.
  • Alliance’s market-monitoring committee advised maintaining oil output at current levels.

Saudi Arabia‘s energy minister reaffirmed that the country will be careful about increasing oil production, despite the fact that numerous prominent analysts predict that increased demand will cause prices to rise soon.

“I will believe it when I see it and then take action,” Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman said in Riyadh.

The minister told energy historian Daniel Yergin that OPEC+’s agreement to limit output by two million barrels per day in October had proven justified. The move sparked outrage in the United States, which claimed that the world economy needs more crude supplies, however, tensions have since subsided.

“If people had trusted us then, we wouldn’t have undergone the trepidations that happened,” he said, referring to a spike in prices to almost $100 a barrel after OPEC+ – a 23-nation group led by Saudi Arabia and Russia – announced its move.

The alliance’s market-monitoring committee convened on Wednesday and advised maintaining oil output at current levels, despite uncertainties over the depth of China’s economic recovery and the volume of Russian shipments as Western nations impose sanctions on Moscow.

Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last February, Brent rose to around $130 per barrel. It has since fallen below $80 per barrel, owing to rising interest rates and a strong dollar, which has caused an economic slowdown.

Fear of sanctions

Nonetheless, the oil market remains constrained. According to Goldman Sachs Group Inc., Brent will rise again above $100 per barrel in the third quarter due to low stocks and spare capacity among producers. Morgan Stanley has made a similar prediction.

The prince warned that restrictions against energy companies could backfire if and when demand increases rapidly.

“All of these sanctions and embargoes will converge into one and only thing: a scarcity of energy supplies of all types when they’re most needed,” he warned. “That is my concern.”

U.S. warns Turkey on exports seen to boost Russia’s war effort

Turkey
  • The US threatened to sanction Turkish companies.
  • Nelson and a group raised concerns about tens of millions of dollars in shipments to Russia.
  • Russia is actively looking to leverage the historic economic ties it has with Turkey.

Istanbul: The US has recently cautioned Turkey about the transfer to Russia of chemicals, microchips, and other materials that could be used in Moscow’s war effort in Ukraine, and it has threatened to sanction Turkish companies or banks that violate sanctions.

Brian Nelson, the top sanctions officer at the US Treasury Department, visited the Turkish government and commercial sector leaders on Thursday and Friday to urge greater cooperation in stopping the supply of such commodities.

In a speech to bankers, Nelson said a marked year-long rise in exports to Russia leaves Turkish entities “particularly vulnerable to reputational and sanctions risks”, or lost access to G7 markets.

They should “take extra precaution to avoid transactions related to potential dual-use technology transfers that could be used by the Russian military-industrial complex,” he said in a copy of the speech issued by the Treasury.

According to a senior US source who requested anonymity, Nelson and a group raised concerns about tens of millions of dollars in shipments to Russia during meetings in Ankara and Istanbul.

“There is no surprise…that Russia is actively looking to leverage the historic economic ties it has in Turkey,” the official said. “The question is what is the Turkish response going to be.”

Ankara, a NATO member, opposes the broad sanctions against Russia on principle but believes they will not be avoided in Turkey, pressing the West to produce evidence.

Russia returns the bodies of British volunteers to Ukraine

Russia
  • They were killed during a humanitarian rescue.
  • The two volunteers were last spotted leaving for the city of Soledar.
  • The pair were attempting to assist an elderly woman when their cars were hit by a shell.

As part of a prisoner swap with Russia, the bodies of two British volunteers slain in eastern Ukraine in January have been found.

The bodies of Chris Parry, 28, and Andrew Bagshaw, 47, have been delivered to Ukraine, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky’s chief of staff.

There has been no word on when they would be handed over to British embassy personnel to be flown home.

The families of the men said they were killed during a humanitarian rescue.

On January 6, the two volunteers were last spotted leaving for the city of Soledar.

According to Mr. Bagshaw’s family, the pair were attempting to assist an elderly woman when their cars were hit by a shell.

Soledar had been the site of severe fighting, and Russia’s military claimed last month that it had conquered the Ukrainian salt-mine town after a long war. The claim was denied by the Kyiv government.

Despite the ongoing combat in Ukraine, Ukraine’s chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, announced on Saturday that 116 Ukrainian servicemen had been released.

He stated that released captives comprised Mariupol defenders, Kherson partisans, Bakhmut snipers, and two special operations soldiers.

Russia’s defense ministry said 63 personnel had been returned as part of a “complex mediation process”.

It stated that it included persons from a “sensitive category” thanks to the United Arab Emirates’ intervention, although it did not define what those people did.

It is the second prisoner exchange between the two countries this year.

According to Mr. Yermak, Ukraine is continuing its efforts to bring everyone home.

Mr. Parry and Mr. Bagshaw had been volunteering in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine.

In a statement issued by the UK Foreign Office last month, Mr. Parry’s family said his “selfless determination in helping the old, young, and disadvantaged” in Ukraine had made them “extremely proud”.

“We never imagined we would be saying goodbye to Chris when he had such a full life ahead of him. He was a caring son, fantastic brother, a best friend to so many, and a loving partner to Olga,” they said.

They added that Mr. Parry, originally from Truro in Cornwall, “found himself drawn to Ukraine in March in its darkest hour at the start of the Russian invasion and helped those most in need, saving over 400 lives plus many abandoned animals.”

Mr. Bagshaw was a British national who lived in New Zealand as a scientific researcher. Since April, he had been working as a volunteer in Ukraine.

In a statement, Mr. Bagshaw’s family said last month: “Andrew selflessly took many personal risks and saved many lives; we love him and are very proud indeed of what he did.

“The world needs to be strong and stand with Ukraine, giving them the military support they need now, and help to rebuild their shattered country after the war.”

“The world must be firm and stand with Ukraine, providing them with the military support they require now and assisting them in rebuilding their destroyed country after the war.”

Pete Reed, another foreign volunteer in Ukraine, was slain on Thursday in the eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut, which has seen significant combat in recent days.

Mr. Reed, a 33-year-old American volunteer assistance worker, was killed “while rendering aid,” according to a statement from Global Response Medicine, the humanitarian aid organization he created.

The UK government has already warned against all travel to Ukraine, warning there is “a real risk to life”.

British nationals who are still in Ukraine should leave immediately if it is safe to do so, according to the statement.
