Saudi Arabia frees US citizen imprisoned for tweeting

Saudi Arabia
  • Saad Ibrahim Almadi was detained in November 2021 while visiting his family in Riyadh.
  • He was sentenced to 16 years in prison.
  • A Saudi court found Mr. Almadi guilty of attempting to destabilize the country.

Saudi Arabia has released a US citizen who had been imprisoned for more than a year over tweets critical of the kingdom.

Saad Ibrahim Almadi, 72, a Saudi national, was detained in November 2021 while visiting his family in Riyadh.

He was sentenced to 16 years in prison last year for tweets he wrote while in the United States.

Mr. Almadi’s release has received no comment from either the US or Saudi authorities.

His son, Ibrahim, acknowledged his father was in Riyadh at a family residence, but it was unclear when he would return to his home in Florida.

16-year travel ban

“All charges have been dropped but we have to fight the travel ban now,” Ibrahim told sources.

A Saudi court found Mr. Almadi guilty of attempting to destabilize the country as well as sponsoring and funding terrorists. He was also given a 16-year travel ban.

In a month, an appeals court doubled his sentence to 19 years.

This year, speaking publicly about the issue for the first time, Ibrahim told the sources that the sole evidence finally offered to the court against his father consisted of 14 tweets.

The tweets seen by the sources included criticism of the demolition of old portions of Mecca and Jeddah, concern about poverty in the country, and a reference to the slain Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

According to his son, Mr Almadi was also found guilty of failing to notify terrorism for tweets written on a second account by Ibrahim.

US President Joseph Biden said he mentioned Mr Almadi’s situation, as well as the cases of other US nationals still barred from entering Saudi Arabia, during discussions with King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman last July.

Mr Biden’s visit, some four years after Mr Khashoggi’s murder, saw him lobby for greater oil supplies and seek assistance in isolating Russia following its invasion of Ukraine.

Iran’s President Raisi invited to visit Saudi Arabia, Tehran says

Saudi Arabia
  • The invitation is claimed to have arrived in the form of a letter from King Salman.
  • Mr. Raisi had welcomed it and “stressed Iran’s readiness to expand cooperation”.
  • Hossein Amir-Abdollahian informed reporters that the two countries had agreed to conduct a meeting.

Iran claims Saudi Arabia has invited Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi for an official visit, barely over a week after the two countries agreed to re-establish diplomatic ties.

The invitation is claimed to have arrived in the form of a letter from King Salman, although it has yet to be confirmed by the Saudis.

The recent history of the Middle East has been dominated by antagonism between the two states.

China mediated the thaw, which has the potential to change the region’s geopolitics.

A senior Iranian official, Mohammad Jamshidi, tweeted about the offer to visit the Saudi capital, Riyadh, adding Mr. Raisi had welcomed it and “stressed Iran’s readiness to expand cooperation”.

Steps towards stability

Separately, Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian informed reporters that the two countries had agreed to conduct a meeting at the level of foreign ministers, with three possible locations mentioned.

He did not specify the places or the date of the encounter.

Sebastian Usher, the recent improvement in bilateral relations, which occurred abruptly after days of discussions mediated by China, appears to be gaining serious traction.

Both have stated that their embassies would reopen within two months and that commercial and security relation will be restored.

Several others, including the United States and the United Nations, greeted this trend with caution after earlier attempts at reconciliation had failed.

Saudi Arabia severed ties with Iran in January 2016 after protesters stormed its embassy in Tehran.

That came after Riyadh murdered prominent Shia Muslim cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr, who had been convicted of terrorism-related crimes.

Since then, tensions have been high between the Sunni- and Shia-led neighbors, with each seeing the other as a menacing entity seeking regional control.

They have been on opposing sides in various regional crises, notably Syria and Yemen’s civil wars.

Mr. Amir-Abdollahian also expressed confidence that steps would be taken to repair relations with Bahrain, a strong Saudi ally that, like Riyadh, severed diplomatic ties with Tehran in 2016.

“We hope that some obstacles will be removed between Iran and Bahrain, and we will take basic steps to reopen the embassies,” he said.

Bahrain has not replied to the remarks but has previously supported the Iran-Saudi deal to restore diplomatic relations.

Iran has also stated a willingness to reestablish or enhance relations with other regional Arab adversaries, such as Jordan and the UAE.

Saudi Arabia introduces new amendment to granting citizenship

  • Saudi Arabia declared that some persons would be granted citizenship.
  • The judgement was posted on the Emirate of Mecca Province’s official Twitter account.
  • The decision will take effect on the date it is published.

Saudi Arabia declared that some persons would be granted citizenship based on a decision to be issued by the Prime Minister and approved by the Ministry of Interior.

The judgement was posted on the Emirate of Mecca Province’s official Twitter account.

The decision, which was published in the official gazette “Um Al Qura” on Friday, amends Article Eight of the Saudi Nationality Law.

According to the ruling, Saudi nationality may be awarded by order of the Prime Minister based on a proposal from the Ministry of Interior.

This is a significant departure from prior rules, since Article 28 of the Saudi Nationality Law’s Executive Regulations, which required the Minister of Interior to take appropriate judgements to award nationality in line with Article 8 of the Law, has been repealed.

The decision will take effect on the date it is published, and it will be conveyed to those who must accept it and act in compliance with it.

Hajj 2023: Saudi Arabia opens registration for domestic pilgrims

Saudi Arabia
  • Muslims in Saudi Arabia have until the 10th of Ramadan to register for this year’s Hajj trip.
  • Ramadan, the lunar month of fasting, is set to begin on Thursday.
  • The ministry announced opening electronic registration for Saudi nationals and Muslim.

Muslims in Saudi Arabia have until the 10th of Ramadan to register for this year’s Hajj trip, according to the kingdom’s Ministry of Hajj and Umrah.

The ministry said on Twitter that applications for Hajj by Saudi nationals and foreigners resident in the country who have not previously performed the annual pilgrimage will be accepted until Ramadan 10.

Registration will start the next day for Saudis and expatriate residents who conducted Hajj at least five years ago, until all places are filled, according to the government.

Ramadan, the lunar month of fasting, is set to begin on Thursday.

Registration is done using the website https://localhaj.haj.gov.sa or the Nusuk app.

In January, the ministry announced opening electronic registration for Saudi nationals and Muslim expats living in Saudi Arabia who intend to conduct Hajj this year.

After being permitted to do Hajj, one of Islam’s five essential tasks, domestic pilgrims are chosen at random using an online lottery method.

The ministry has revealed four Hajj plans for domestic pilgrims, with prices ranging from SR3984 to SR11,841.

Domestic pilgrims can also pay Hajj payments for this year’s journey in three installments, rather than all at once, as was previously the case.

The third and final installment is due by 10/10/1444, which is less than two months before the start of the Hajj ceremonies in late June this year.

The monarchy has announced that there would be no restrictions on the number of pilgrims from all over the world for the 2018 Hajj season, overturning prior restrictions imposed in response to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Saudi Arabia has reduced the number of Muslims permitted to undertake Hajj in the last two years in order to avoid the spread of COVID-19.

In the pre-pandemic era, around 2.5 million Muslims would perform Hajj each year.

Muslims who are physically and financially capable of doing Hajj must do it at least once in their lives.

  • There are a lot of opportunities for Saudi investments in Iran, said Al-Jadaan.

Mohammed al-Jadaan, Saudi Arabia‘s finance minister, said on Wednesday that Saudi investments in Iran could happen “quite rapidly” if an agreement is reached.

According to a joint statement published by Iran, Saudi Arabia, and China, which mediated the arrangement, Tehran and Riyadh agreed to restart diplomatic relations and reopen embassies within two months.

“To focus on your economic development and focus on providing for the people in your country, you need stability, and they (Iran) need both,” Al-Jadaan said in Riyadh.

He stated that there are several prospects in Iran, as well as numerous opportunities in Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia

  • There has been a strong turnout to book reservations for Umrah during Ramadan.
  • Saudi Arabia has just launched a host of amenities for Muslims.

According to a media source, bookings for Umrah or small pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia during Ramadan are no longer accessible in the first 13 days of the month.

According to a report, there has been a strong turnout to book reservations for Umrah during Ramadan, which is generally the busiest season for smaller pilgrimage in Mecca’s Grand Mosque.

According to a breakdown of reservations made thus far through the app, 13 days of the month, including the last 10 days of Ramadan, have already been fully booked.

According to the study, there has been a considerable demand for Umrah on the remaining six days of the month.

Saudi Arabia has announced that Umrah permits for Ramadan, which begins next week, can be purchased by Muslims both inside and outside the country through Nusuk.

The nusuk.sa portal enables Muslims who intend to do Umrah or visit the kingdom’s holy places to receive the appropriate visas and permissions, as well as book associated packages, electronically.

Saudi Arabia has just launched a host of amenities for Muslims who want to visit to the country to do Umrah.

Muslims with various sorts of entrance visas, such as personal, visit, and tourism visas, are permitted to do Umrah and visit Al Rawda Al Sharifa, where the Prophet Mohammad’s (peace be upon him) grave is situated in the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina.

The Umrah visa has also been extended from 30 days to 90 days, allowing holders to enter the kingdom by all land, air, and sea routes and depart from any airport.

Saudi nationals can apply for visas to invite friends from other countries to visit the country and perform Umrah.

Saudi Arabia has also granted a transit visa that allows the holder to conduct Umrah, visit the Prophet’s Mosque, and attend various events within the kingdom.

The transit visa is valid for four days and is valid for 90 days.

The kingdom said last week that GCC residents, regardless of vocation, are eligible to apply for a tourist visa, allowing them to do Umrah.

Millions of Muslims who cannot physically or financially afford the annual Hajj rites travel to Saudi Arabia for Umrah.

Saudi Arabia extended Hajj housing deadline

  • Saudi Arabia has extended Hajj housing deadline.
  • Hajj, one of Islam’s five obligatory duties is set to begin in late June.
  • Saudi Arabia has reduced the number of Muslims permitted to perform the Hajj rites.

According to the Saudi news agency SPA, a Saudi committee in charge of housing Hajj pilgrims in Mecca has extended the deadline for issuing permits for houses to accommodate the faithful until next week.

The panel has advised landlords who are interested in renting out their homes for this purpose to consult with accredited engineering firms.

The committee, which has extended the deadline until the end of the Islamic month of Shaaban later this week, stated that it continues to receive such applications from engineering offices accredited by Mecca’s municipality and civil defence, which will examine the buildings to ensure they meet the required conditions, according to SPA.

As part of the process, the committee has asked landlords who want to rent out their homes to pilgrims to comply with all safety requirements and apply for permits as soon as possible.

Hajj, one of Islam’s five obligatory duties, is set to begin in late June this year in Saudi holy sites.

According to Saudi Arabia, the minimum age for performing this year’s Hajj pilgrimage is 12 years old, as the number of pilgrims will return to pre-pandemic levels.
