Man wins Spanish-language Scrabble World Championship without knowing Spanish

Scrabble World Championship
  • Nigel Richards is known as the world’s best Scrabble player.
  • He has added another extraordinary achievement to his record.
  • He won the 2024 Spanish-Language Scrabble World Championship.

Nigel Richards, widely regarded as the world’s best Scrabble player, has added another extraordinary achievement to his record.

Last month, he claimed victory in the 2024 Spanish-Language Scrabble World Championship in Granada, Spain, despite not knowing Spanish.

This incredible feat mirrors his 2015 win in the French-Language Scrabble Championship, where Richards memorized an extensive vocabulary of French words within nine weeks, without learning their meanings. His ability to excel in languages he doesn’t speak has cemented his reputation as a Scrabble phenomenon.

Yves Brenez, vice president of the Belgian Scrabble Federation, described Richards as a “fighting machine,” saying, “To him, words are just combinations of letters. He comes up with scrabbled words that others take 10 years to master.”

Similarly, John Baird, secretary of the Christchurch Scrabble Club where Richards began his journey, revealed, “He can look at a page and retain the whole thing. On top of that, he has a remarkable ability to mix up letters and identify word possibilities.”

Richards’ unparalleled memory and strategic skills allow him to outperform native speakers in their own languages. With English-language Scrabble no longer offering sufficient challenge, fans can only speculate which language this Scrabble maestro will conquer next.

Aamir Khan has revealed details about his much-anticipated film Sitaare Zameen Par, which is being hailed as the spiritual sequel to his 2007 masterpiece Taare Zameen Par.

Speaking at the Red Sea International Film Festival, where he was honored for his contribution to cinema, Aamir shared insights into the film’s theme, cast, and release timeline.

“Sitaare Zameen Par is a sequel to Taare Zameen Par, a film that I directed some years ago,” Aamir said. “However, it is not a sequel in the sense that the characters do not continue from the previous one. It is a fresh set of characters with completely fresh situations and plot. Thematically, it is a sequel. It is saying the same things… actually, it is saying a lot more.”

He explained the film’s concept, emphasizing its exploration of human uniqueness. “Taare Zameen Par was about a child with dyslexia and how we often judge intelligence narrowly. This film takes that theme forward, celebrating our differences and the qualities that make us magical and unique,” he added.

Directed by RS Prasanna and starring Aamir, Darsheel Safary, and Genelia Deshmukh, Sitaare Zameen Par is set to release in mid-2024 after post-production wraps.

Ariana Grande reflects on facing public criticism during ‘Wicked’ promotions

Ariana Grande
  • Ariana Grande broke her silence on the relentless beauty criticism.
  • She reflected on the toll public scrutiny has taken.
  • She addressed how criticism of appearance is universally harmful.

Ariana Grande has broken her silence on the relentless beauty criticism she has faced throughout her career.

In an emotional interview with French journalist Salima Poumbga, the Grammy-winning artist reflected on the toll public scrutiny has taken as she promotes her role in Wicked, a performance earning her Oscar buzz for Best Supporting Actress.

“I’ve been kind of doing this in front of the public and kind of been, you know, a specimen in a petri dish, really, since I was 16 or 17,” Grande said, holding back tears. “I’ve heard every version of what’s wrong with me. And then you fix it, and then it’s wrong for different reasons.”

Grande addressed how criticism of appearance, whether public or private, is universally harmful. “Even if you go to Thanksgiving dinner and your granny says, ‘You look skinnier. What happened? You look heavier. What happened?’ That is something that is uncomfortable and horrible no matter where it’s happening and no matter the scale it’s happening on.”

She criticized the normalization of commenting on others’ looks, stating, “There’s a comfortability that we shouldn’t have at all in commenting on others’ looks or health.” Resolute in her stance, she added, “I just don’t invite it in anymore. It’s not welcome.”

Cynthia Erivo, Grande’s Wicked co-star, also condemned online harassment, calling it “quite dangerous.” She emphasized, “What a person who has never met you thinks is never more important than what you think of yourself.”

Grande’s remarks spotlight a wider conversation about societal pressures and personal boundaries.
