Nigel Richards, widely regarded as the world’s best Scrabble player, has added another extraordinary achievement to his record.
Last month, he claimed victory in the 2024 Spanish-Language Scrabble World Championship in Granada, Spain, despite not knowing Spanish.
This incredible feat mirrors his 2015 win in the French-Language Scrabble Championship, where Richards memorized an extensive vocabulary of French words within nine weeks, without learning their meanings. His ability to excel in languages he doesn’t speak has cemented his reputation as a Scrabble phenomenon.
Yves Brenez, vice president of the Belgian Scrabble Federation, described Richards as a “fighting machine,” saying, “To him, words are just combinations of letters. He comes up with scrabbled words that others take 10 years to master.”
Similarly, John Baird, secretary of the Christchurch Scrabble Club where Richards began his journey, revealed, “He can look at a page and retain the whole thing. On top of that, he has a remarkable ability to mix up letters and identify word possibilities.”
Richards’ unparalleled memory and strategic skills allow him to outperform native speakers in their own languages. With English-language Scrabble no longer offering sufficient challenge, fans can only speculate which language this Scrabble maestro will conquer next.
