Crocodile takes life of 44-year-old woman working on Palm Oil plantation in Indonesia

Crocodile takes life of woman
  • A crocodile attack in Indonesia claimed the life of a 44-year-old woman.
  • She was working on a palm oil plantation in West Kalimantan.
  • The woman was dragged into a ditch by the crocodile.

A tragic crocodile attack in central Indonesia has claimed the life of a 44-year-old woman working on a palm oil plantation in West Kalimantan, on the island of Borneo.

The woman, who was with a colleague at the time, was bitten on her left hand and dragged into a ditch by the crocodile. Despite her colleague’s attempt to save her, the animal overpowered them. The colleague then rushed to alert the authorities in the coastal district of Ketapang.

Local police chief Bagus Tri Baskoro provided further details, stating, “After a 90-minute search, the victim’s body was found,” adding that the woman’s remains were discovered “still in the crocodile’s grip not far from the location of the attack.” The crocodile released the body when rescuers approached, he said.

Borneo, home to vast jungles and rare wildlife, has been the site of frequent crocodile attacks, with several species of the reptiles inhabiting the area. Palm oil plantations and logging projects have been criticized for encroaching on Borneo’s rainforests, often bringing humans and wildlife into closer contact.

In a similar incident in August, a crocodile killed a 54-year-old woman while she bathed in a river on Indonesia’s Maluku Islands.

Finance Minister

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue, Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb, officially launched ESG Sustain, a centralized online sustainability portal developed by the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) in collaboration with UN Women Pakistan in Islamabad.

The launch of ESG Sustain marks a significant milestone under SECP’s ESG Roadmap aimed towards advancing sustainable practices across regulated sectors.

The portal provides companies with a robust tool to report climate-related data, disclose sustainability progress and share gender-disaggregated statistics, while also hosting a dedicated Knowledge Hub with resources from professional bodies and market leaders to support capacity building, said a press release issued here.

With over 40 companies already on boarded for contributing data, ESG Sustain is set to play a pivotal role in fostering data-driven decision-making, attracting sustainability-linked investments and paving the way for an ESG Index in future.

Addressing the participants, the Finance Minister commended SECP on launching ESG Sustain.

He highlighted that “Portal’s emphasis on inclusivity and gender reforms aligns with the Government of Pakistan’s vision for inclusive growth”.

Noting the global shift towards climate resilience and climate finance, he stressed the importance of leveraging resources through collaboration and scaling up efforts digitally, with ESG Sustain serving as a catalyst for these initiatives.

ESG Sustain reflects the government’s vision of enabling the private sector to drive economic growth while it concentrates on creating a supportive policy framework.

Ms. Vipunjit Ketunuti, Deputy Country Representative for UN Women, commended the launch of ESG Sustain for its potentially pivotal role in promoting sustainable development, “It is truly inspiring to see an increasing number of companies in Pakistan recognizing the critical importance of embedding ESG principles into their core business strategies for long-term success. ESG Sustain will go a long way in facilitating the process. I am particularly proud that the SECP has recommended the UN Women Empowerment Principles as among the globally recognized frameworks for sustainability reporting. Jason Momoa
  • A headline claimed that Jason Momoa quit the movie “Minecraft.”
  • The news also claimed he left the US following the 2024 U.S. election.
  • There is no evidence to support these claims

A false headline circulating on social media claims that actor Jason Momoa quit the upcoming Minecraft live-action movie and left the United States following the 2024 U.S. election.

The headline, shared widely on Facebook, reads: “‘I Can’t Stay Here’: Jason Momoa Quits Minecraft Live-Action Project Following Red Wave Controversy.”

However, there is no evidence to support these claims. Momoa has made no public statements about leaving the U.S. or exiting the Minecraft movie, which is currently in post-production and slated for release in 2025. The film’s social media accounts and Warner Bros. have not released any such announcements.

Momoa has continued to share posts about the project, including on Instagram as recently as November 19, 2024. The actor, who has previously expressed support for President Joe Biden, did not publicly endorse any candidate in the 2024 election.

This incident follows a pattern of misleading rumors that have targeted celebrities such as Taylor Swift and Beyoncé after the election, falsely claiming they were boycotting “red states” or political outcomes. There is no indication that Momoa has made any decisions to leave the U.S. or quit his movie role.
