KU, ICAN signs MoU to enhance quality life of children, young adults

KARACHI: The Department of Psychology of the University of Karachi and Icon for Child and Adult Nurturing (ICAN), a nongovernmental organization, working to promote positive mental health and wellness of children, young adults, and mothers in society, inked the memorandum of understanding to enhance the quality of life of children, young adults, and mothers at the Vice Chancellor Secretariat.

The KU VC Prof Dr Khalid Mahmood Iraqi and the Founder and Director of the ICAN Dr Sajida Hassan signed the MoU document in presence of the ICAN team.

On this occasion, the Director of the ICAN Dr Sajida Hassan shared that the organization was formed to establish a connection with communities to serve society. She mentioned that the ICAN is committed to enhancing the overall quality of life for individuals across various life stages, focusing on children and young adults.

She asked the KU administration to start short courses or a specialization degree program on child psychology in the department.

According to her, the ICAN’s strength is derived from close partnerships with grassroots community-based organizations. She added that the organization is working with the University of Leicester, the University of Birmingham, the Welcome Trust of the UK, the Anna Freud Trust, the Economic and Social Research Council, and the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), in conjunction with Professor Panos Vostanis Child Psychiatrist UK Director of WACIT among many others.

Dr Khalid Mahmood Iraqi observed that we haven’t addressed the issues related to a child and mother whereas in the West this matter is given due importance. He said that parents need to be aware of their child’s health as they have to play a vital role in the upbringing of a child.

Labourer falls to death from under construction site at NICVD

KARACHI: A labourer died after falling from the 6th floor of an under-construction pediatric unit in National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD).

NICVD spokesperson said a tragic accident has occurred at the under-construction pediatric unit in the premises of NICVD, a laborer fell from the sixth floor and got seriously injured.

The  injured labourer was immediately shifted to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) where he succumbed to his injuries despite medical efforts.

He said investigation continues after tragic accident at construction site.

IHC suspends physical remand of PTI MNAs

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has suspended the 8-day physical remand of Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf members of National Assembly (MNAs).

Chief Justice Islamabad High Court Aamer Farooq and Justice Saman Rafat Imtiaz heard the case related to the arrested leaders of PTI.

On the request of Shoaib Shaheen Advocate, the court suspended the physical remand order of PTI MNAs Zain Qureshi, Sher Afzal Marwat and Sheikh Waqas Akram.

Chief Justice Aamer Farooq asked “If we make an order, will the accused be judicial.

The petitioner’s lawyer said that the court should not give too long physical remand, the trial court did not write any reasons for the remand in its order.

Chief Justice Aamer Farooq asked the prosecutor, how will you defend the decision of physical remand. On which the prosecutor read out the FIRs against the accused.

The Islamabad High Court adjourned the hearing of the case till tomorrow.

The Prosecutor General said that suspending the decision of physical remand will give a bad impression.

The PTI MNAs arrested in connection with cases registered against them following the September 8 rally.

The five Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) MNAs, including Amir Dogar, approached the Islamabad High Court (IHC) challenging the eight-day physical remand order.

The petitioners stated that as elected members of the National Assembly they were illegally arrested from the assembly premises without any reason and taken to an unknown location.

ECP asks parliamentarians to submit statements of assets by Dec 31

ISLAMABAD: Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) asked the Members of the Parliament and Provincial Assemblies to submit to the Election Commission by 31st December, 2024, yearly Statements of Assets and Liabilities including their spouse and dependent children as on the preceding thirtieth day of June on Form-B for the financial year 2023-24.

According to the ECP statement issued here, the submission being a mandatory requirement under Section 137 of the Elections Act, 2017, which is reproduced below: -“137. Submission of statement of assets and liabilities. —

(1) Every Member of an Assembly and Senate shall submit to the Commission, on or before 31st December each year, a copy of his statement of assets and liabilities including assets and liabilities of his spouse and dependent children as on the preceding thirtieth day of June on Form-B.

(2) The Commission, on the first day of January each year through a press release, shall publish the names of Members who failed to submit the requisite statement of assets and liabilities within the period specified under sub-section (1).

(3) The Commission shall, on the sixteenth day of January, by an order suspend the membership of a Member of an Assembly and Senate who fails to submit the statement of assets and liabilities by the fifteenth day of January and such Member shall cease to function till he files the statement of assets and liabilities.

(4) Where a Member submits the statement of assets and liabilities under this section which is found to be false in material particulars, he may, within one hundred and twenty days from the date submission of the statement, be proceeded against for committing the offence of corrupt practice.”

ISLAMABAD: Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said that Pakistan’s blue economy had the potential to become a driving force for national growth and resilience, citing the opportunities in fisheries and maritime trade to the exploration of offshore resources like petroleum and gas.

The deputy prime minister, addressing the International Maritime Business and Finance Conference held here, said that to enhance Pakistan’s share in the blue economy, efforts were being made under the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) to modernize the fisheries and shipbreaking industry using advanced technology.

He told the gathering that the government had already removed sales tax on fisheries processing plants and fishery seeds.

Highlighting the significant investment opportunities offered by the country’s ports, he said the oceans supported around 85% of global trade and also played a critical role in meeting the sustainable development agenda.

Dar said that as a maritime nation, Pakistan viewed the Arabian Sea as its fifth neighbor and a vital component of its economic and strategic paradigm.

Pakistan’s unique geopolitical and geographical position offered immense potential for trade with economic zones offering opportunities for coastal tourism, aquaculture, biotechnology, energy, and health.

He said Pakistan was transforming ports into hubs of regional and international trade and efficient green transshipment as a maritime single window was operational to enhance the efficiency of ports.

The deputy prime minister said that Pakistan was committed to working for the environmental protection in the maritime industry and sought support from the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) to make Pakistan a hub of ship breaking industry.

Highlighting the impacts of climate change on Pakistan like the 2022 flash floods despite the country’s minimal contribution to carbon emissions, the deputy prime minister said the government was committed to low-carbon alternative fuels and establishing green corridors.
