As the US shoots down a fresh mystery object, speculation builds

US
  • A US warplane shot down a new flying object near the Canadian border.
  • President Joe Biden ordered an F-16 fighter to shoot down the latest object.
  • China maintains that the first object was a weather balloon that was blown off course.

Washington: A US warplane shot down a new flying object near the Canadian border on Sunday, the latest of three mysterious devices spotted since military radar settings were cranked up in the wake of the downing of a suspected Chinese spy balloon.

Americans have been watching the sky with bated breath as the unexplained incursions unfolded amid a backdrop of high tensions with China — but only the first object has so far been traced to Beijing.

The Pentagon said on Sunday that it still doesn’t know what the other three objects are — one shot down Friday over Alaska, one Saturday over Canada’s Yukon territory, and the most recent one Sunday over Lake Huron.

However, it stated that the object that was downed on Sunday had been monitored for nearly a day and did not resemble the suspected Chinese surveillance balloon that was destroyed off the coast of the United States on February 4 after transiting the country.

President Joe Biden ordered an F-16 fighter to shoot down the latest object “out of an abundance of caution,” a senior administration official said.

Octagonal structure with strings

The object was described by the official as an octagonal structure with strings hanging off it.

It might have posed a hazard to civil aircraft while drifting at around 20,000 feet (6,000 meters) over Michigan, according to the official.

General Glen VanHerck, Commander of US Northern Command, told reporters that when aircraft were sent up to assess the newest object, they found that there was no evidence of any threat, as there had been with the other objects.

“What we are seeing is very, very small objects that produce a very, very low radar cross-section,” he said.

He declined to characterize the objects’ appearance or size but said they were moving very slowly, approximately the speed of the wind.

In recent days, speculation over what the items could be has erupted.

“I will let the intel community and the counterintelligence community figure that out,” VanHerck told reporters when asked if it was possible the objects are aliens or extra-terrestrials.

“I haven’t ruled out anything at this point.”

Mysterious objects

According to Assistant Secretary of Defense Melissa Dalton, the objects shot down since Friday were spotted after US air defense altered radar settings to check for smaller and slower-moving objects.

“In light of the People’s Republic of China balloon that we took down last Saturday, we have been more closely scrutinizing our airspace at these altitudes, including enhancing our radar, which may at least partly explain the increase in objects that we’ve detected over the past week,” she told reporters.

She stated that they are aware of items drifting at such heights that are operated in the air by scientific institutes and commercial organizations.

“But because we had not been able to definitively assess what these recent objects are, the president wanted to act out of an abundance of caution to protect our security and interests,” she said.

Currently, operations are underway to recover all four objects, according to Dalton.

Officials in Canada described the shot down over Canada’s far northwest on Saturday as small and cylindrical, around the size of a Volkswagen automobile.

Officials stated that recovery workers, aided by a Canadian CP-140 patrol aircraft, were continuing their search for wreckage in the Yukon on Sunday.

US troops were grappling with Arctic weather as they searched near Deadhorse, Alaska, where the second item was shot down on Friday.

Operations were also underway off the coast of South Carolina, where the previous week’s drama culminated when the first huge balloon was shot down.

China relations tense

China maintains that the first object was a weather balloon that was blown off course.

Because of the event, Secretary of State Antony Blinken canceled a long-planned diplomatic mission to Beijing.

On Sunday, a senior Republican accused Beijing of “belligerence.”

“It was done with provocation to capture intelligence data and intelligence on our three major nuclear installations,” House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul said CBS.

Dalton stated that after being rebuffed by Beijing for several days, US authorities have now talked with Beijing about the purported surveillance balloon.

“There have been contacts made with the PRC on the high-altitude balloon,” she said.

Soon after the balloon was shot down, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin requested a meeting with Chinese counterparts.

The Chinese Defense Ministry stated Thursday that it had declined the contact because of Washington’s “irresponsible” action to shoot down the balloon.

Israel launches airstrikes on Gaza in pre-dawn raid

Israel
  • Israel launched air attacks on Gaza on Monday.
  • One person was murdered in a pre-dawn Israeli army operation in Nablus.
  • Since the 1967 Six-Day War, Israel has occupied the West Bank.

According to the army, Israel launched air attacks on Gaza on Monday in response to a rocket fired from the Palestinian enclave over the weekend, as unrest in the occupied West Bank remained.

According to the Palestinian Red Crescent, one person was murdered in a pre-dawn Israeli army operation in Nablus, in the northern West Bank, which has seen near-constant violence in recent months.

The army did not respond immediately to the Nablus raid.

But in Gaza, it said it had struck “an underground complex containing raw materials used for the manufacturing of rockets”.

The strikes were “in response to the Saturday rocket launch from Gaza into Israel,” the army claimed in a statement.

According to the military, air raid sirens blasted in neighborhoods near the Gaza border following the Israeli strikes.

Following the current round of missile firing, there were no reported deaths in Gaza or Israel.

However, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has seen a significant surge in bloodshed.

Following the latest killing in Nablus, the violence has claimed the lives of 47 Palestinian adults and children, including militants and civilians, since the beginning of the year.

During the same time period, nine Israeli civilians, including three children, and one Ukrainian civilian were murdered.

In reaction to tragic Palestinian attacks in occupied east Jerusalem, Israel’s security cabinet declared late Saturday that it will legalize nine West Bank Jewish communities.

According to a security cabinet statement, many of the newly authorized communities have existed for years, and some for decades, but have never been recognized as legal by Israel’s government.

Israel has occupied the West Bank

Since the 1967 Six-Day War, Israel has occupied the West Bank.

Around 475,000 Jewish settlers now reside in Palestinian territory, in enclaves that are illegal under international law.

The majority of that population lives in settlements that Israel has unilaterally authorized, although others reside in communities that have not received government approval.

The security cabinet also stated that it expects to launch a fresh phase of settler housing construction in the West Bank, a move that will almost certainly be met with considerable international condemnation.

During a visit to the region last month, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken warned against further settlement expansion.

The conservative government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also ordered an increased security presence in Israel-annexed east Jerusalem, the site of two recent deadly attacks targeting civilians.

Israel’s president proposes solution to avoid “constitutional collapse”

Israel's
  •  Israel’s president appealed to coalition members to postpone initial legislative moves in parliament.
  • Justice Minister Yariv Levin poured cold water on the idea of postponing.
  • The center-left opposition has staged protests and called for statewide protest strikes.

Jerusalem: On Sunday, Israel’s president proposed a compromise plan to avoid a “constitutional breakdown” and even violence over a controversial judiciary overhaul demanded by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s hard-right administration.

President Isaac Herzog’s rare prime-time television speech, whose figurehead position is intended to unite an often contentious population, included an appeal to coalition members to postpone initial legislative moves in parliament, which some had hoped to begin this week.

But Justice Minister Yariv Levin poured cold water on the idea of postponing, saying in a statement reacting to Herzog’s address that while he did not oppose dialogue this “should not be linked to progress in the legislation proceedings”.

The center-left opposition has staged protests and called for statewide protest strikes at the Knesset on Monday, accusing Netanyahu of seeking greater influence over the justice system while he is being tried on corruption charges.

Netanyahu, who has denied any wrongdoing in his trial, has stated that the measures are intended to restore the balance between Israeli authorities.

Brink of constitutional and social collapse

“We are on the brink of constitutional and social collapse,” Herzog said. “I feel – we all feel – that we are barely a moment away from a collision – and even from a violent collision.”

The White House, which normally avoids engaging in Israel’s domestic affairs, issued a similar, albeit more veiled, call.

“The genius of American democracy and Israeli democracy is that they are both built on strong institutions, on checks and balances, on an independent judiciary,” U.S. President Joe Biden said in a statement.

“Building consensus for fundamental changes is really important to ensure that the people buy into them so they can be sustained.”

Recent polls suggest relatively little support for the planned judicial changes in their current form.

Herzog asked the administration and opposition to initiate early discussions based on five principles. These would entail establishing a procedure for enacting Israel’s quasi-constitutional core legislation and prohibiting the Supreme Court from interfering with them.

Another concept would clarify the Supreme Court’s authority, which the administration has accused of overreach. Herzog also called for a shake-up of the committee for selecting justices – but differed with the government on the format, noting that “no side should have a built-in majority”.

Opposition leader Yair Lapid said Herzog’s plan was worthy, but that “the struggle will not be halted and the protest will not stop” until an agreement is reached.

In a rare joint statement, Israel’s five major banks, Bank Hapoalim, Bank Leumi, Israel Discount Bank, Mizrahi-Tefahot, and First International Bank of Israel, expressed support for Herzog’s efforts to establish broad agreements that would help the Israeli economy.

Legal experts, economists, and former security and economic officials, including Netanyahu’s confidants and appointments, have cautioned that his administration’s judicial initiatives could have major diplomatic and economic consequences.

Russia has supplied India with weapons worth $13 billion in last five years

Russia
  • Russia has supplied India with around $13 billion in weaponry.
  • Military equipment worth more than $10 billion.
  • India is the world’s largest importer of Russian weaponry.

Russian state news media reported late on Sunday that Russia has supplied India with around $13 billion in weaponry over the last five years, and that New Delhi has placed orders with Moscow for weapons and military equipment worth more than $10 billion.

India is the world’s largest importer of Russian weaponry, accounting for roughly 20% of Moscow’s current order book, and the Indian government has not openly criticized Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has appealed for talks and diplomacy to end the 12-month conflict.

In response to the invasion, which Moscow describes as a “special military operation,” dozens of Western countries placed sanctions on Russia, including penalties on weaponry.

According to Dmitry Shugayev, the head of Russia’s Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation, India, China, and several Southeast Asian countries have retained their interest in purchasing Russian armaments.

Russia’s main partners

“Despite the unprecedented pressure on India from Western countries led by the United States in connection with Russia’s special operation in Ukraine, it continues to be one of Russia’s main partners in the field of military-technical cooperation,” Interfax agency quoted Shugayev as saying.

According to Interfax, annual arms shipments were around $14-15 billion, while the order book has remained stable at roughly $50 billion.

Shugayev stated that Asian buyers are particularly interested in Russia’s S-400 Triumf missile defense systems, short-range surface-to-air missile systems such as the Osa, Pechora, or Strela, as well as Su-30 aircraft, MiG-29 helicopters, and drones.

According to the Russian state news agency TASS, Russia will display over 200 samples of armaments and military equipment at the 14th international aerospace show Aero India 2023, which begins on Monday in Bengaluru.

At the show this week, India is looking for military planes worth billions of dollars, finalizing jetliner deals to suit civilian demand, and pressuring global aviation makers to build more locally.
