Sarfaraz Ahmed thinks second Test’s result could’ve been different

Sarfaraz Ahmed
  • Sarfaraz Ahmed scored a century in the second Test against New Zealand in Karachi.
  • It was his first hundred since 2014 and his fourth overall.
  • The 35-year-old also thanked the crowd in Karachi for their support.

After making a century against New Zealand in the second Test of the series on Friday in Karachi, Pakistan’s wicketkeeper-batsman Sarfaraz Ahmed has started to bat again.

The right-fourth hander’s hundred overall and first since 2014 was this one.

“I was part of the team for four years and despite not getting chances here, I was continuing to play well elsewhere. Wanted an opportunity from Allah Almighty and got it,” Ahmed said during the post-match presentation ceremony.

“I was very tense in the first Test, but the boys and captain gave me confidence. [Last session today] when 140 runs were left, the management said that you need to keep trying to score when the ball is there to hit.”

“But then two wickets fell, and so we changed our style of play. If those two wickets didn’t fall then the result could’ve been something else,” he added.

With his team pursuing a 319-run goal and at one point in the second innings being 80-5, the former skipper hit a stunning century.

“It is a fourth-innings century so it is special, probably my best,” he said when asked if it was the best innings of his career.

The 35-year-old also expressed gratitude to the Karachi crowd and urged them to attend the stadium for the ODI series, which begins on January 9.

“Karachi crowd has always supported me. And always supported the team. Request them to come for the ODIs too,” he concluded.

Ahmed scored 335 runs in four innings with the help of three fifty-pluses and a hundred, earning him the title of player of the game and series.

It should be mentioned that both games in the two-match Test series between Pakistan and New Zealand ended in a tie.

Six-year-old boy detained in the US after shooting a teacher

  • Six-year-old child in the eastern US state of Virginia opened fire in a classroom.
  • Victim was a 30-year-old teacher whose injuries were life-threatening.
  • The teacher was badly injured.

Washington: A six-year-old child in the eastern US state of Virginia opened fire in a classroom at an elementary school on Friday, badly injuring a teacher, according to the police.

“The student involved is six years old. Steve Drew, the local police chief, stated at a news conference that “this was not an accident shooting” and that “he is currently in police custody.”

According to police, the victim was a 30-year-old teacher whose injuries were life-threatening.

“I’m in shock, and I’m disheartened,” said the city’s superintendent of schools, George Parker.

“We need the community’s support to make sure that guns are not available to youth.”

The recent tragedy of an 18-year-old gunman killing 19 children and two teachers in Uvalde, Texas last May is only one example of the tragic trend of school shootings in the US.

According to the Gun Violence Archive database, there were an estimated 44,000 gun-related deaths in the US every year, with half of those deaths occurring as a result of homicide, accidents, or self-defense, and the other half as a result of suicide.

Babar Azam advises Sarfaraz to ‘keep shining’

Babar Azam

  • Ahmed Zafar Ansari was also named player of the match and series after scoring 335 runs in four innings.
  • The 35-year-old also thanked the crowd in Karachi.

After the Green Shirts successfully prevented New Zealand from winning the Test series in Karachi on Friday, Pakistan’s captain Babar Azam appeared optimistic.

“Another fantastic inning by Sarfaraz bhai. Keep shining,” the skipper wrote on Twitter as the wicket-keeper-batter helped Pakistan draw the match with his magnificent ton.

The right-fourth hander’s hundred overall and first since 2014 was this one. Ahmed scored 335 runs in four innings with the help of three fifty-pluses and a hundred, earning him the title of player of the game and series.

During the post-match presentation ceremony, Ahmed said: “I was part of the team for four years and despite not getting chances here I was continuing to play well elsewhere. Wanted an opportunity from Allah Almighty and got it.”

Match report

In dwindling light, Pakistan’s final combination of Naseem Shah and Abrar Ahmed held off 21 balls while Ahmed scored a valiant century to deny New Zealand victory and force a thrilling draw in the second Test.

With 39 balls left in the game, Sarfaraz was out for a career-high 118, and New Zealand was in position to win the series.

However, as night fell, Naseem scored 15 and Ahmed seven runs to lead Pakistan to 304-9 in pursuit of a 319-run total when umpires Alex Wharf and Aleem Dar ruled that there were just three overs left and the light could not be maintained.

The first Test, which was also played in Karachi, resulted in a tie, ending the two-match series at 0-0 and denying New Zealand their first series victory in Pakistan in 53 years.

After taking the second new ball, Tim Southee dismissed Agha Salman for 30 runs to end a 70-run stand for the seventh wicket before Bracewell removed Ahmed to give New Zealand a chance to win.

But Ahmed’s fourth Test century, his first in eight years, was what put Pakistan on track for a hard-fought draw.

With the total at 125-5 at lunch, Pakistan was in serious trouble. However, Ahmed spearheaded the fightback during a sixth-wicket stand of 123 runs in three hours with Saud Shakeel, who scored 32.

Ahmed accelerated the run rate by blasting three boundaries and a six off spinner Michael Bracewell before driving pacer Matt Henry for two to achieve his hundred as Pakistan reached 179-5 at tea, needing an additional 140 runs in the remaining 31 overs.

However, the objective became unattainable as Pakistan lost Ahmed, Hasan Ali (five), and Salman in a span of 14 runs.

The home team’s 314 against Australia in Karachi in 1994 was the previous best winning chase in a Test in Pakistan.

Ahmed, who was relieved of his duties as captain of all three formats in October 2019, made a comeback in the drawn first Test, which was played in his hometown of Karachi, and finished the series with the most runs (335), including three fifty-pluses and a hundred.

Sarfaraz improved on his previous record of 112 against the same opponents in Dubai eight years ago by batting for four hours and 48 minutes while striking nine boundaries and a six.

Naseem Shah thought about chasing runs

Naseem Shah
  • Naseem Shah had come in to bat after Hassan Ali was trapped LBW by Tim Southee.
  • Shah was then left with Abrar Ahmed to survive.
  • Pakistan closed the day on 304 for nine, 15 runs short of their target against New Zealand.

On the final day of the second Test against New Zealand in Karachi, Pakistan was nine wickets behind but fast bowler and tail-end batsman Naseem Shah claimed he still intended to chase the mark.

When the umpires concluded that there was not enough light to continue the game, Pakistan finished the day on 304 for nine, 15 runs short of their objective.

After Hassan Ali was caught LBW by Tim Southee in the 85th over, Shah walked into bat and joined senior teammate Sarfaraz Ahmed in the middle. However, the right-hand hitter was dismissed in less than two overs.

In an effort to prolong the possibility of a chase, the number 10 hitter also hit a six and a four off Michael Bracewell, but he ran out of time.

“I was aiming to chase the target. I was confident that I could do that but I didn’t get enough time. I am happy that we managed to draw the test as well,” he told :

“Pressure was naturally there, especially when Sarfaraz got out, but I’ve played in such situations before as well, where I had to survive or save the match for the team; I was confident,” he said.

According to Naseem, five-day cricket is distinct from ODIs and T20Is in that the results of your five days of labour are rewarded in the last hour of the match, as was the case against New Zealand.

“It was a very good game of Test cricket, we were positive and everyone was aiming to chase the target,” he said.

“When they had brought fielders close to me, I saw the scoreboard and thought 25 runs are getable. Then, I attempted to do that. I managed to hit a couple of shots then told their captain that I am going to chase if he continues to keep the same fielding,” Naseem recalled.

The young pacer remarked that when the fielders were closer, the scenario brought back memories of his youth, when he used to play a particular kind of cricket called “one-tip-out,” in which a hitter is deemed out even if he is caught after only one bounce.

“I felt like it is the same situation, so I had a similar thing in my mind plus Saqlain Mushtaq had once told me that if you are surrounded by fielders consider that circle is minimised and one good shot can get you some runs, so I had these things in my mind and I kept going,” he concluded.

Billionaire Jack Ma to give up control of China’s Ant group

Jack Ma
  • Jack Ma indirectly owned 53.46% of his shares.
  • he will only possess 6.2% of the voting rights after the adjustment.
  • The adjustment will not change the economic interests of any shareholders.

BEIJING: In response to a Communist Party assault on the country’s internet sector that singled out the flamboyant billionaire, Jack Ma will cede leadership of Chinese fintech behemoth Ant Group, the business announced on Saturday.

Ma, one of China‘s most well-known businessmen, once exemplified a generation of Chinese technology moguls with his rags-to-riches personal story and fondness for public spectacle.

However, the former English teacher has withdrawn from the public eye after Beijing destroyed Ant’s anticipated IPO in Hong Kong in 2020 as a result of his scathing remarks about government regulators.

In a statement released on Saturday, his business announced changes to its ownership structure that would prevent “any shareholder, acting alone or in concert with other parties, from exercising control over Ant Group.”

The notice outlined the company’s previous complicated organizational structure and stated that Ant was the “control person” because Ma indirectly owned 53.46% of his shares.

Based on the information in the statement, he will only possess 6.2% of the voting rights after the adjustment.

The Ant statement stated that the modification was made to further improve the stability of the company’s corporate structure and the sustainability of its long-term growth.

Ten individuals — including the founder, management, and staff — will “exercise their voting rights independently”, it said.

The adjustment will not change the economic interests of any shareholders.
