2162 cases solved in DNA & Serology Lab at PCMD-UoK in 2022

A total of 1,494 cases were received for serology analysis in last year.

KARACHI: Sindh Forensic DNA and Serology Laboratory (SFDL) at the Dr. Panjwani Center for Molecular Medicine and Drug Research (PCMD), University of Karachi, announced that a total of 2162 cases for DNA and Serology analysis were received and solved in 2022.

In a statement, the spokesman of the International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), University of Karachi, said that there was an upward trend in the number of cases as compared to the previous year (2021).

On the other hand, Prof. Dr. M. Iqbal Choudhary, Director of the International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences, and COMSTECH Coordinator-General has expressed satisfaction over the quality of the work in the Sindh Forensic DNA and Serology Laboratory (SFDL), and appreciated SFDL In-charge and Project Director Dr. Ishtiaq Ahmad Khan and his team for having smart teamwork at the SFDL. Prof. Iqbal Choudhary also thanked the Sindh Government for its continuous support and financial assistance.

According to the statistics, prepared by the SFDL, in the year 2022, a total of 1,494 cases were received for serology analysis, while all the cases were related to murder. Conversely, 668 cases were received for the forensic DNA test, which included dead body identification (53 cases), murder (111 cases), paternity (20 cases), robbery (37 cases), sexual assault (395 cases) and sodomy (52 cases).

Furthermore, the SFDL continued to contribute to the capacity building of relevant departments and arranged training for around 100 crime scene unit officers. It is worth mentioning that these trainings impacted positively the overall performances of these officers which lead to solving important cases.

Tiger inflicts injury on Italian circus performer

The video, which was posted on Twitter, shows a trainer named Ivan Orfei attempting to train a tiger situated on a high platform. However, a second tiger quickly approaches the trainer from behind and leaps on its leg.

Many children in Italy’s Lecce area had a nightmare after what was supposed to be a fun-filled day at the circus. At the Marina Orfei Circus in Surbo, a tiger attacked and bit a trainer during a performance. People were horrified to their core when the incident’s footage appeared online. Big cat captivity in circuses has also been a topic of controversy.

The video, which was posted on Twitter, shows a trainer named Ivan Orfei attempting to train a tiger situated on a high platform. However, a second tiger quickly approaches from behind the trainer, leaps on its leg, and attacks the man’s neck. As rescuers climb into the cage to free the 31-year-old trainer, the audience’s screams can be heard.

Over 8000 people have seen the video, and many others have commented on it. Additionally, the circus administration sent a message about the issue on Facebook

“Ivan, a highly skilled professional trainer, was hit by a tiger during the show and luckily suffered minor injuries and his condition is of no concern,” read the post.

“Beyond the prejudices, insults and falsehoods that are read around, ours is a world made of great love for animals, just as Ivan himself demonstrates to the audience in his shows. Tigers are fascinating animals and knowing how to tame them and build a trust relationship with humans is an art that has been happening not only in the Circus world for hundreds of years. However, an accident can happen and the courage shown by people like him who carry out this job is commendable. Ivan is wishing a very soon return to the track, alongside his family and animal friends,” it added.

Mishal, who was an award-winning broadcast journalist, was born on July 8, 1984, in Karachi. She started her career as a news anchor on a private TV channel. She also worked for Pakistan Television.

The news of her sad demise triggered an outpour of reactions from fellow journalists and politicians, who offered their condolences.

“Remembering #mishalbukhari our host #AppTV who lost battle against cancer in Lahoresday evening. Thoughts of our team members with whom she worked are with her parents, family,” wrote Rauf Klasra.

Former deputy speaker Qasim Khan Suri offered condolences and prayed for the departed soul and her family members.

Maritime Affairs Minister Faisal Subzwari prayed for the family members and the deceased journalist.
