Ebrahim Raisi To Be Sworn In As Iran’s New President Succeeding Hassan Rouhani

Ebrahim Raisi Iran's New President

Iran’s new president, Ebrahim Raisi will take his oath today following his election victory in June.

Ebrahim Raisi succeeds Hassan Rouhani, whose landmark success during his two-term presidency was the 2015 nuclear agreement between Iran and six world powers.

According to the details, Raisi won office in a June 18 election marked by record abstention after many heavyweights were banned from standing.

Iran currently has been suffering from its worst drought in more than 50 years. Water is scarce, power outages are frequent and the coronavirus continues to spread rapidly.

Meanwhile, Inflation has risen up due to the pressure of US sanctions. Many Iranians feel exhausted.

Protests against the government continue to flare up in various parts of Iran, most recently in Khuzestan province in the southwest.

There is not much hope that things will change for the better under the new presidency.

Who Is Ebrahim Raisi?

Ebrahim Raisi, a hardline cleric close to the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has won Iran’s presidential election in June.

He was born in 1960 in Mashhad, Iran’s second-biggest city. His father, who was a cleric, died when he was five years old.

Mr Raisi, who wears a black turban identifying him in Shia tradition as a descendant of the Prophet Muhammad, followed his father’s footsteps and started attending a seminary in the holy city of Qom at the age of 15.

On the other hand, Mr Raisi has been heavily criticized for his human rights record. Campaign groups have blamed him of involvement in the executions of thousands of political prisoners in 1988.

He was one of four judges who sat on secret tribunals that came to be known as the “Death Committee” which condemned the prisoners to death.

Raisi has said the sentences were justified because then-Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini had issued a religious ruling.

The US imposed sanctions on Ebrahim Raisi in 2019 for alleged human rights abuses.

Noor Mukadam murder case

A local court in Islamabad has on Thursday declined the bail plea by Zahir Jaffer’s co-accused parents in the high profile Noor Mukadam murder case.

Additional District And Sessions Judge Muhammad Sohail Anjum reserved the verdict on the pleas by prime accused Zahir Jaffer’s parents.

Yesterday, the local court dealing with the murder case reserved its verdict on the plea for bail by Zakir Jaffer and Mrs Asmat Zakir, for their suspected complicity in the horrible murder of Noor Mukadam.

The plea was submitted by defense counsel of Jaffer’s parents who fought the case with arguments outlined from preceding cases and verdicts.

Note that the co-accused parents of prime accused Zahir Jaffer are imprisoned in Adyala Jail.

Noor Mukadam Murdered

The 27-year-old Noor Mukadam was murdered in the federal capital on July 20, in the city’s F-7 area, according to police.

She is the daughter of Shaukat Mukadam, who served as Pakistan’s ambassador to South Korea and Kazakhstan.

The Islamabad police arrested Zahir on the night of July 20th from his house where he killed her with a sharp instrument and beheaded her.

The accused called NOOR at this residence on July 20th and told her to switch her phone off. When her parents couldn’t contact her, they started questioning her friends about her location.

When some of Noor’s friends went to Jaffer’s residence to inquire about the deceased, he denied seeing her. Upon this, Noor’s friends had a fight with Jaffer, sources told the police.

After brutally murdering Noor, the accused tried fleeing to the United States but was arrested on time.

The gruesome incident sparked a nationwide campaign seeking justice for her, with #JusticeforNoor had become a top trend on Twitter.

It should be noted that Jaffer had previously been deported from the United Kingdom on charges of assaulting a female.
