“Manipulating FATF for narrow political designs is disgraceful”: Qureshi

Qureshi FATF Modi government

Shah Mahmood Qureshi has on Monday said that India is politicizing the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) issue.

Taking to his Twitter today, Qureshi further added that the recent statement on FATF by India’s minister makes clear their malintent.

“Pakistan has consistently maintained that India has politicised FATF. The recent Indian statement makes clear their malintent. Manipulating an important technical forum for narrow political designs against Pakistan is disgraceful but not surprising for the Modi Government.”

The Foreign Minister further lashed out at the Modi-led government saying that manipulating an important technical forum for narrow political designs against Pakistan is disgraceful.

On the other hand, the Foreign Office (FO) slammed the Indian minister’s statement, admitting that it played role in keeping Pakistan on the grey list of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF).

“Indian statement not only exposes its true colours but also vindicates Pakistan’s longstanding stance on India’s negative role in FATF,” said FO Spokesperson Zahid Hafeez Chaudhri.

He reminded that Islamabad has always been highlighting India’s role to the international community in the politicization of the FATF and undermining its processes.

It added that the recent statement by the Indian foreign minister was “just a further corroboration of its continued efforts to use an important technical forum for its narrow political designs against Pakistan”.

The statement further said that Islamabad has been “exposing India’s duplicitous role to the international community in the past” and vowed that it will also bring the “recent confession by India” to the FATF’s notice.

‘India Made Sure Pakistan Stays On FATF Grey List’

On Sunday, Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar revealed that Pakistan is on the grey list of the FATF because of the “efforts of Narendra Modi’s government.”

According to a report, India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar credited the Modi-led government for its “efforts” to ensure that FATF kept Pakistan on the grey list.

“FATF as all of you know keep a check on fundings for terrorism and deals with black money supporting terrorism. Due to us, Pakistan is under the lens of FATF and it was kept [on] the grey list. We have been successful in pressurising Pakistan and the fact that Pakistan’s behaviour has changed is because of pressure put by India by various measures. Also terrorists from LeT and Jaish, India’s efforts through UN, have come under sanctions,” Jaishankar reportedly told.

Karachi: 23% Covid Positivity Rate Due To Delta Variant Set Alarm Bells Ringing

Karachi delta variant

The government of Karachi is likely to take stern measures in the metropolis to curb the fast spread of the Delta variant, which now accounts for 92% of the infection cases, with the positivity ratio exceeding 23%.

An official of the Sindh Health Department told that to contain the spread of the coronavirus in Karachi, some strict measures can be decided by the provincial government during the next meeting of the Provincial Taskforce on COVID-19, which is scheduled to meet today.

“Without putting strong non-pharmaceutical interventions in place, Covid’s spread cannot be controlled,” he warned.

Delta variant growing across Karachi

On the other hand, virologists claimed that the Delta variant of the coronavirus now accounts for 92% of the new cases in Karachi and is the leading cause of the increasing number of positivity and hospitalization in the city.

“Our experts at the National Institute of Virology at the University of Karachi analysed 90 Covid samples on July 14 and 15, and of them, 83 or over 92%, were of the Delta variant. This is an extremely alarming situation,” said the director of KU’s International Centre for Chemical & Biological Sciences.

He said that since the Delta variant is highly transmissible and infects a large number of people, more people will require hospitalisation, and the pressure on health care facilities will increase further.

Delta Variant Casts Shadow Over Pakistan, Dr Faisal

Earlier, Special Health Assistant Dr Faisal Sultan had warned that a new and dangerous type of coronavirus, the Delta (Indian) variant, is emerging in the country following the fourth wave.

He had said that in view of the increasing number of coronavirus cases in the country, it is important to follow SOPs to avoid other strains, including Delta.

Dr Faisal pointed out the possibility of imposing smart lockdown and said that there would be a need to restrict movement.

He further said that only those who have completed vaccination should visit tourist areas.

Dr Faisal had said that the NCOC and the Ministry of Health also have a position to avoid tourism with incomplete vaccinations.

He said the restrictions would be strictly enforced during the Eid holidays.

Dr Faisal Sultan dismissed concerns about the shortage of vaccines, saying, “We have an abundance of vaccines.”

“Apart from the use of masks and SOPs, vaccination is important which should not be ignored under any circumstances as cases are on the rise and we will re-impose smart lockdown,” he said.

Babar Azam Disappointed By Bowlers After Losing 2nd T20 Against England

Babar Azam uphappy with squad announced for T20 WC

Pakistan cricket captain Babar Azam has said that the bowlers on his side gave away too many runs which ended in the team’s loss in the second T20 against England.

In the post-match conference on Sunday, Babar Azam said that after the first partnership, the batsmen could not hold on to the momentum.

Set a 201-run target by England, Pakistan were restricted to 155 for nine in their 20 overs. Openers Azam and Mohammad Rizwan added 50 runs in 5.4 overs before the skipper was dropped by Saqib Mahmood for 22.

After Azam’s dismissal, Pakistan’s hunt fell away as the tourists lost wickets at regular intervals. Sohaib Maqsood (15), Mohammad Hafeez (10), Fakhar Zaman (8) and Azam Khan (1) fell to England’s spin bowling trio of Adil Rashid, Mark Parkinson and Moeen Ali.

Rizwan top-scored for the side with 37 off 29 balls. Shadab Khan remained triumphant on 36 off 22 balls (two fours, three sixes). Imad Wasim contributed 20 runs for England, Saqib took three wickets for 33 while Adil and Moeen took two wickets each conceding 30 and 32 runs respectively.

Admitting failures in the field, Azam said that they would not repeat their mistakes in the next match and would try to play good cricket.

Earlier on Saturday, Pakistan pacer Shaheen Afridi said the team needs help in case it loses [a match or a series].

Shaheen Afridi won the Player of the Match award for figures of 3 for 30 in 3.2 overs in the twenty20 series opener against England on Friday.

“Pakistan won the first T20I by showing the best teamwork,” Shah said. “The coaches supported us in bad times and gave us confidence.”

Afridi accepted that the green shirts could not play their best during the one-day international series matches. “We played badly in the ODI series,” he said. “It was a bad time.”

“You always have to perform as a team to win,” he added.

“Jaishankar’s statement Vindicates Pakistan’s stance on India’s negative role in FATF”: FO

Foreign Office Canadian minister’s remarks about Pakistan

The Foreign Office (FO) has on Monday slammed the Indian minister’s statement, admitting that it played role in keeping Pakistan on the grey list of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF).

“While Pakistan has been sincerely and constructively engaged with FATF during the implementation of the action plan, India has left no stone unturned in casting doubts on Pakistan’s progress through disgraceful means,” said Chaudhri.

The statement said that Islamabad has been “exposing India’s duplicitous role to the international community in the past” and vowed that it will also bring the “recent confession by India” to the FATF’s notice.

“Pakistan is also considering approaching FATF president for appropriate action in this matter. Following the recent confession by the Indian Government, India’s credentials for assessing Pakistan in FATF as co-chair of the Joint Group or for that matter any other country are subject to questions, which we urge FATF to look into,” said the FO Spokesperson.

“We are resolved to sustain this momentum and trajectory with the support and cooperation of our international partners. India’s delusions of putting pressure on Pakistan have always remained unfulfilled and would never see the light of day,” said Chaudhri.
