Canada Intends To Make Online Hate Speech A Crime Punishable by $16,000 Fine

Canadian Govt Hate Crime Punishable

The ruling Liberal government in Canada on Wednesday announced to take action to protect Canadians against hate speech and hate crimes.

The government has announced that it plans to make online hate speech a crime in Canada punishable by as much as $20,000 (roughly $16,250 US) for the first offence and $50,000 ($40,600 US) for the second.

The proposal would penalize social media users who violated the law but excluded social media companies that host such content from fines.

According to media reports, this new development came after a 20-year-old man recently rammed his truck into a Muslim family of five in Ontario, killing everyone, in what Canadian police say was an anti-Muslim terror attack.

Canada’s Attorney General David Lametti assured Canadians that the proposed law would not target “simple expressions of dislike or disdain” during a virtual press conference.

Instead, Lametti said, the law is only designed to punish the most extreme forms of hatred that “expresses detestation or vilification of a person or group on the basis of a prohibited ground of discrimination.”

The government, headed by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, released a statement on Wednesday outlining the goals of the proposed legislation, known as Bill C-36, as well as other steps being taken to defend against online racial abuse:

  1. amend the Canadian Human Rights Act to define a new discriminatory practice of communicating hate speech online, and to provide individuals with additional remedies to address hate speech;
  2. add a definition of “hatred” to section 319 of the Criminal Code based on Supreme Court of Canada decisions; and
  3. create a new peace bond in the Criminal Code designed to prevent hate propaganda offences and hate crimes from being committed, and make related amendments to the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Earlier, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had offered his sincere condolences to the victims of the terror attack and called it an “act of evil.”

Several government dignitaries, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Ontario Premier Doug Ford, London Mayor Ed Holder and other politicians had attended the two-hour vigil that was broadcasted on Facebook to express their solidarity after the killing of four members of a Muslim family due to hate crime.

“You are not alone. All Canadians mourn with you and stand with you, tonight and always,” Trudeau had said.

“Islamophobia is real. Racism is real. You should not have to face hate in your communities, in your country. We can and we will act. We can and we will choose a better way,” he had added.

Trudeau had further said, “It was an act of terrorism against a family targeted for their religion. This type of racism and terrorism cannot and will not be tolerated.”

“They were all targeted because of their Muslim faith,” Trudeau had said, promising to step up the country’s fight against far-right racist groups. “This is happening here, in Canada. And it has to stop.”

Party leaders in the House of Commons condemned the violence as an act of “Islamophobia,” which have multiplied in recent years in the country long known for its tolerance.

World won’t accept a government imposed by force in Afghanistan, Ned Price

Ned Price US-Afghanistan situation

The United States has warned the Taliban that the world will not accept a government imposed by force in Afghanistan.

In a news briefing in Washington, State Department spokesperson Ned Price has indicated that US financial assistance to Afghanistan could only continue if the country has a government that’s recognised by all.

“The world will not accept the imposition by force of a government in Afghanistan,” said Mr Price while referring to media reports about Taliban victories against the Kabul government.

“You’ve heard this from Ambassador (Zalmay) Khalilzad; you’ve heard this from Secretary (Antony) Blinken and from others,” he added.

Earlier, a journalist suggested Ned Price that the militants have expanded their control over Afghanistan to more than 50 districts since President Joe Biden announced his plan to withdraw all US forces from Afghanistan by September 11.

“Legitimacy and assistance for any Afghan government can only be possible if that government has respect for human rights if that government has credibility if that government has legitimacy, including in the eyes of its own people,” Mr Price said.

Previously, the United States (US) President Joe Biden had said that Pakistan will definitely play an important role in ending the Afghan war and will also work on a peace agreement.

Joe Biden spoke to a Pakistan-born US democrat leader, Tahir Javed and said, “Pakistan will also play an important role in the future for peace in Afghanistan.”

Previously, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) had said that the withdrawal of foreign troops from Afghanistan coincides with the progress in the Afghan Peace Process.

The Spokesperson had said we also hope the US will continue to urge the Afghan leaders to seize this historic opportunity for achieving a political settlement in Afghanistan.

“Pakistan will continue to work together with the international community in the efforts for lasting peace and stability in Afghanistan,” he added.

Court Issues Release Orders For PML-N Leader Khawaja Asif

Khawaja Asif release orders

A court on Thursday (today) has issued the release orders for the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Khawaja Asif from jail.

According to sources, a court official moved to Kot Lakhpat Jail carrying the release order of Khawaja Asif, who was granted bail by the Lahore High Court (LHC) in a money laundering case on Wednesday.

An LHC bench comprising Justice Alia Neelam and Justice Shahbaz Rizvi delivered the verdict in the case of Khawaja Asif.

The PML-N leader was arrested on December 29, 2020. He filed a bail application on March 27, 2021.

Asif, in his bail plea, stated that he was arrested by NAB on December 29 in a case alleging he owns assets beyond known sources of income and has engaged in money laundering.

He told the court that he has already submitted details sought by NAB and claimed that the anti-corruption watchdog has not shared any of the records turned in by him.

“The accountability court judge also observed that NAB has all relevant records,” Asif had said.

He had said that the Federal Board of Revenue and Election Commission of Pakistan also have records of the assets owned by him.

Earlier, the accountability court in Lahore had granted physical remand to Khawaja Asif till January 13 in assets beyond means case.

The NAB presented Khawaja Asif before the court and requested a 15-day physical remand.

Also, the court directed the NAB that the accused should be allowed to meet his counsel and family members with food being provided from his home.

“Didn’t realize we had such a large Robotic population”, Sherry Rehman Taunts PM Imran

Sherry Rehman taunts PM Imran

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Sherry Rehman took a jibe at Prime Minister Imran Khan over his recent remarks on the rise of sexual violence in Pakistani society and women’s dressing with ‘fewer clothes’.

Sherry Rehman poked fun at the prime minister’s remarks, wondering whether all men who act in a civilized manner with women are “robots”.

“Just so am clear: are robots all the men who are civilised in their behaviour and interactions with women? Or just those who don’t attack women? In any case, am newly appreciative of all my fellow robot colleagues and friends. Didn’t realise we had such a large AI population,” she tweeted.

Wondering whether the premier would apologize, the PPP leader in another tweet said, “The problem is that many non-robots feel emboldened now to act out predations against women. They have been given sanction by a slew of spokeswomen too now citing culture, and society, no outlets etc. Many women are getting threats. So really, no laughing matter. Will PM apologise?”

However, PM Imran’s remarks led to angry responses on social media, with many accusing the prime minister of blaming women and the way they dress, for rising acts of rapes.

“Men Are Not Robots, If Women Wear Fewer Clothes, It Will Have Impact”: PM

Note that during the interview, the prime minister was asked to respond to his earlier comments linking the incidence of rape to obscenity. In response, he had had said, “It is such nonsense. I never said that […] I said the concept of purdah which is to avoid temptation in society.” He had gone on to say “If you raise temptation within society and all these young guys have nowhere to go, it has consequences.”

The interviewer, the journalist Jonathan Swan, had then asked him whether he thought “that what women wear has any effect, that it is part of this temptation?”

“If a woman is wearing very few clothes, it will have an impact on men unless they are robots. I mean it’s common sense,” the prime minister had replied — a remark that has sparked extreme outrage both on national and international levels.
