In an unexpected outcome, Punjab police used water cannons and tear gas on Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) members to disperse Imran Khan supporters’ protest rally in Lahore’s Zaman Park. Lollywood celebrities have spoken out about the anarchy that is currently enveloping one of Pakistan’s biggest cities due to political instability, while the internet erupts in fits of wrath and millions of people condemn the terrible acts, branding them nothing but fascism. Between the ruling party and the opposition, Pakistan had seen numerous political crises.
Imran Khan, the then-prime minister and current leader of the opposition, was deposed by a no-confidence vote in Parliament in April. Khan has argued that his removal was unlawful multiple times and has demanded early legislative elections. Shehbaz Sharif, Khan’s replacement, has, however, rejected any requests.
Celebrities like Farhan Saeed, Shagufta Ejaz, and Reema Khan have denounced the brutality local police have displayed towards PTI supporters. Farhan Saeed, an actor and musician best known for his role in Suno Chanda, tweeted: “What’s happening at #Zamanpark is disgusting , embarrassing and dangerous. It’s turning into a jungle and no one is stopping, in fact everyone seems to be part of it . What does a normal citizen supposed to think ? who just wants his country to progress? Who hijacked us & when?
Shagufta Ejaz, a renowned actress, also tweeted in favour of PTI supporters and in opposition to police abuse:
Renowned actress Reema Khan also lost her cool after seeing the atrocities the Lahore Police had inflicted on the populace.
Imran Khan had originally intended to launch his party’s election campaign in Pakistan’s Punjab province, which has the most residents, and the northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province from the Lahore rally today, but he has since cancelled the event.
