“UN Must Play Its Role For Resolution of Palestine & Kashmir Disputes”: FM Qureshi

Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi has said that today, the entire world is looking at Pakistan as a solution to every problem.

While addressing a joint press conference alongside United Nations General-Assembly (UNGA) President Volkan Bozkir on Thursday, the Foreign Minister said the United Nations (UN) must play its role in the resolution of Palestine and Jammu and Kashmir disputes.

“There are similarities between the Palestinian situation and that of Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.

FM Qureshi added that the oppressed peoples in both the territories faced the worst form of human rights violations and are demanding their right to self-determination.

He further stated that Kashmir Dispute is a reality and nobody can remove it from the agenda of the UN Security Council.

The Foreign Minister said, “Pakistan expects the UN to continue to play its leadership role for the revival of the peace process in the Middle East.”

“The fire there can be extinguished through dialogue and a two-state solution in accordance with the UN Security Council resolutions,” Qureshi added.

He said timely humanitarian assistance should also be provided to the Palestinians affected by the Israeli attacks.

Shah Mahmood Qureshi said Pakistan has supported the Afghan reconciliation process and will continue to do so.  He said Pakistan is supportive of the Istanbul process and international conference that should take place at the earliest in Istanbul.

UNGA President sheds light on Palestine and Kashmir issue

The United Nations General-Assembly (UNGA) Volkan Bozkir has on Thursday said that the UN’s inaction on the issue of Palestine is hurting its credibility.

He was addressing a joint press conference alongside Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi today. The UNGA President has called upon India and Pakistan to pursue the path for peaceful resolution of the issue of Occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

“Peace, stability and prosperity hinges on normalization of relations between Pakistan and India, which is possible by finding the two countries resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute,” he said.

“Inaction on the issue of Palestine, which is a grave matter, is damaging the credibility of the United Nations and the Security Council,” Bozkir said.

The UNGA President further added that it is hoped that the Security Council will also hear a collective vote on this important and necessary issue.

“Hundreds of Palestinians have been killed in blatant human rights abuses,” Bozkir said. “Negotiations are urgently needed to establish two independent states. The UN General Assembly will not sit idly until peace is restored in the Middle East,” he added.

The UN leader also spoke about the Kashmir issue and said that he is well aware of the situation in Jammu and Kashmir.

“I know who a common Pakistani feels about the issue,” Volkan Bizkir added.

“I have always urged the parties to refrain from changing the status of the disputed territory. I urge India and Pakistan to work for a peaceful solution to this problem,” he said.

Commenting over Afghanistan Peace Process, Volkan Bozkir said that peace in the country is imperative for stability in the region.

“The Afghan peace process should be Afghan-owned and Afghan-led,” he said while appreciating Pakistan’s role in the peace process in Afghanistan.

The UNGA President also applauded Pakistan’s efforts in carrying the COVID-19 pandemic.

Note that Volkan Bozkir has arrived in Pakistan on a three-day official visit at the invitation of Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi.

During his arrival, he was received by senior officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a UN representative in Islamabad and the Turkish Ambassador to Pakistan Ihsan Mustafa Yurdakul at the airport.

During his stay, Volkan Bozkir will have detailed talks with the Foreign Minister and call on the Pakistani leadership. The interactions will cover a wide range of political and socio-economic issues on the United Nations’ agenda.

Volkan Bozkır is the first Turkish national to preside over the UN General Assembly. He had visited Pakistan last year in August before taking the charge as the President of the UN General Assembly.

According to media reports, PM Modi will first land in Bhubaneshwar where he will hold a review meeting of Cyclone Yaas and will then proceed for an aerial survey in the affected areas of Balasore, Bhadrak and Purba Medinipur.

In eastern India, a powerful Cyclone ‘Yaas’ destroyed thousands of houses and forced the closure of Kolkata’s busiest airport.

According to the reports, the Cyclone caused severe damage in the coastal areas and this is the second Cyclone to come in a week.

Cyclone ‘Yaas’ caused dust winds of up to 140km/h, while people were forced to evacuate from the affected areas, officials said.

Last week, Cyclone ‘Tauktae’ hit the west coast of India.

Officials said more than 1m people had been displaced from the storm-hit areas, while television footage showed billowing seas, strong winds and rains in the state of Odisha, while shops and homes were destroyed.

The premier had urged the Secretary-General to work towards engaging with all segments of Western society, in particular the academia, civil society organizations, intelligentsia and politicians.

He stressed that the international community must show a common resolve against intolerance and incitement to violence on the basis of religion or belief and work together for peaceful co-existence.

Magnitude 4.8 Earthquake Strikes Different Parts Of Quetta, Afghanistan

Earthquake tremors were felt around noon near Quetta, Quetta District, Balochistan and spread fear and panic among the people and they came out of their houses reciting the Kalima Tayyaba.

According to the seismological centre, the magnitude of the quake was 4.7 to 4.8. Epicentre location corrected by 12 km towards North. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface.

The depth of the quake was 25 km underground.

Earlier, a magnitude 3.9 earthquake shook Swat and its adjoining areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).

According to Seismological Centre, the Hindu Kush mountain range was the epicentre of the quake. The tremors were felt in Mingora city and nearby areas.

PSL 6: Franchise Owners Suggest postponing the tournament: Sources

Amidst operational issues, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) held an emergency meeting of franchise owners to examine the situation in the staging of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 6.

According to sources, the issues related to travel to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for the remaining PSL 6 matches, might result in the postponement of the tournament.

During the meeting, the PCB officials sought two more hours to decide about an alternate venue while the franchise owners suggested postponing the tournament.

“Holding the remaining 20 PSL matches were proving difficult under the current circumstances and the tournament may not be held in Abu Dhabi,” sourced added.

They said the PCB had got all the required approvals from the UAE authorities including that of chartered flights.

“Sharjah can be an option and will come under discussion during the meeting,” they said.

Departure Delayed Again

The departure of chartered flights to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has been delayed due to some technical reasons.

This is the third time the players and officials’ departure for the UAE has been postponed.

The flight was previously scheduled to leave for the UAE at 8:00 am on Wednesday, which was later rescheduled to Thursday, 3 pm.

The board is planning to begin the PSL remainders from 5th June but a final schedule is expected to be announced today.

Earlier, a 233-member contingent from Pakistan, including players, team support staff, coaches, broadcast staff and match officials, was scheduled to board two different chartered flights from Lahore and Karachi to Abu Dhabi on Wednesday morning for the remaining PSL matches scheduled in Abu Dhabi. The flight, however, was postponed.

PM Imran To Highlight Civilization values in Prophet’s (PBUH) Seerah

Prime Minister Imran Khan will virtually deliver the keynote address at the International Conference on Civilizational Values in the Prophet’s (PBUH) Seerah today at 2 PM.

The virtual addressing is being organized by the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO), at Rabat, Morocco.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Imran Khan has said that the massive change in climate will surely affect the future generations of Pakistan.

While addressing the Ten Billion Tree Tsunami Program ceremony, the Prime Minister said that Pakistan is unfortunately amongst the ten countries which are most vulnerable to climate change. “We want to leave a better Pakistan for future generations,” he added.

He further added that Pakistan will host “World Environment Day” on June 5 after its efforts to bring beneficial climate change by planting trees.

He said the government has embarked upon a series of projects including that of Ten Billion Tree Tsunami, national parks’ establishment and restoration of wetlands and wildlife to achieve that objective.

He said these projects will also provide job opportunities to the people and contribute to the promotion of tourism.

He further added that the government also aims to increase national parks in the country.

Foreign Minister (FM) Shah Mahmood Qureshi has received the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) President Volkan Bozkir, who is on a three-day official visit to Pakistan.

According to the details, FM Qureshi held a meeting with UNGA President on his arrival at the Foreign Office in Islamabad today.

During the meeting, Volkan Bozkir reiterated that the United Nations (UN)  position on the Jammu and Kashmir dispute is governed by the UN Charter and relevant UNSC resolutions, calling for a free and impartial plebiscite under the UN auspices.

However, the Foreign Minister stressed the need for resolution of Palestine and Jammu and Kashmir disputes in accordance with the UN Security Council resolutions.

“Peace will remain elusive in the Middle East without the permanent resolution of the Palestine issue,” he said.

Qureshi further added, “Peace cannot be established in South Asia sans the resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute.”

The President of UNGA will hold important talks including regional peace and security issues. Moreover, Volkan Bozkir along with Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi will address a joint press conference and meet the top leadership including Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Peace Cannot Be Established Without Resolving The Palestinian Issue: Qureshi

Earlier, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi had said that peace in the Middle East cannot be established without resolving the Palestinian issue.

“My hands were strengthened by the unanimous resolution condemning Israeli attacks against the people of Palestine,” said the Foreign Minister.

FM Qureshi succeeded in adopting a joint strategy on the Palestinian issue with all political parties of Pakistan showing great support and generosity.

The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation OIC, Arab League, and Non-Aligned Movement member countries are grateful for the support received.

“I also met with the President of the Security Council”, said Shah Mahmood Qureshi.

“I would like to thank the Chinese Foreign Minister for his support on the Palestinian issue as China attaches great importance to the issue of Palestine,” he said.

KP Announces 25% increase in government employees’ salaries

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has declared a 25% hike in the salaries of provincial government employees from June 2021.

While talking to media officials in Peshawar, KP Chief Minister Mahmood Khan announced the increase in the salaries of government employees by 25%.

He said Adhoc relief will also be announced for government servants in the upcoming budget.

Mahmood Khan said despite the financial crisis, the salaries of employees are being increased.

“Maximum relief will be provided to the employees,” the Chief Minister said.

He further added, “The minimum wages of labourers will also be enhanced from seventeen to twenty-one thousand per month from the in the upcoming budget.”

Earlier, Prime Minister Imran Khan had approved the increase in the salaries of federal government employees.

Finance Ministry officials briefed the Prime Minister during the meeting. The meeting also discussed the burden on the national exchequer after the increase in salaries.

According to sources, the cabinet had approved the increase in the salaries of government employees through summary circulation.

The interior minister said that the law and order is a provincial matter and we will provide whatever help is required in this matter.

“Terrorism cases should be registered against the dacoits and the interior ministry would provide anything needed,” he added.

On this occasion, CM Sindh Murad Ali Shah said that the dacoits will be completely eradicated. Some important equipment is needed. “The Federal Ministry of Home Affairs should help us in procuring the equipment,” he remarked.

Earlier, Sheikh Rashid Ahmed on Wednesday said that the federal government will ensure the provision of all resources to the law enforcement agencies (LEAs) to maintain the law and order.

The Minister made these remarks during a briefing given to him on the law and order situation at the Sindh Rangers Headquarters in Karachi.

On the occasion, the interior minister said that the federal government will take all necessary measures to protect the lives and properties of the masses.

Lauding the role of Sindh Rangers in restoring peace in Karachi,  Rashid termed the metropolis backbone of the country’s economy.

Upon his arrival at the Sindh Rangers Headquarters, DG Rangers Major General Iftikhar Hassan Chaudhary welcomed the interior minister.

ISPR: Passing out Parade of Recruits from Pakistan Rangers Punjab Held Today

The passing out parade ceremony of the 29th Course of Pakistan Rangers Punjab (BTC-29 course) was held at Pakistan Rangers Academy Mandi Baha-Ud-Din, today (Thursday). 

According to Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), DG Rangers Punjab Major General Muhammad Amir Majeed Mughal was the special guest at the passing out parade of Punjab Rangers. A smartly turned-out contingent of Rangers troops presented guard of honour to the chief guest.

As many as 1953 recruits from all parts of the country completed their basic training and formally joined the ranks of Pakistan Rangers (Punjab), ISPR said. 

The ISPR further added that the soldiers of Punjab Rangers have the honour of guarding the eastern borders and at the same time they have an important role in the internal security of the country from Gilgit to Kashmore.

During the parade ceremony, DG Rangers Punjab felicitated the soldiers and their families on the successful training, ISPR added.

Furthermore, DG Rangers Punjab said that safeguarding important installations of the state is also our responsibility.

He also bestowed gifts among the cadets who showed exceptional performance during their training.

Earlier, more than 3000 personnel of Levies and Khasadar forces had completed the second phase of training, ISPR had said in its statement.

According to Pakistan Army’s media wing, in collaboration of Pak Army and Frontier Corps Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the second phase of training of former Khasadar and Levies personnel integrated into the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police concluded.

ISPR said that the second phase of training in different areas of the tribal districts conducted from 18 January to 12 April 2021 in which 3300 personnel had integrated into the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police had received training by expert trainers of the Pakistan Army, Frontier Corps and KP police.

Moreover, the training had included counter-terrorism, quick reaction force, policing, dealing with IEDs and explosives, awareness of modern equipment, physical fitness and firing practice.

Senior officials of the Pakistan Army, Frontier Corps and Police oversaw the ongoing police training on various occasions and expressed satisfaction.
