PM Khan, UNGA President discuss key items on UN agenda

Prime Minister Imran Khan has met with the President Of the United National General Assembly (UNGA) Volkan Bozkir on Thursday.

According to the details, a wide range of issues was discussed during the meeting pertaining to regional and international peace and security, sustainable development, and economic recovery efforts in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Views were exchanged on key items on the UN agenda such as Palestine, the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, the Afghan peace process, and illicit financial flows from proceeds of crime, corruption, and bribery.

The PM lauded the role of PGA in convening the special meeting of the GA on Palestine, stressing that following the announcement of ceasefire steps should be taken to revive the peace process & ensure a just & lasting solution in line w/ relevant UN resolutions & two-state vision.

The Prime Minister underscored Pakistan’s strong commitment to multilateralism with the UN playing a central role.

He highlighted the need for enhanced international cooperation, under the UN auspices, to address climate change and environmental degradation, as well as debt relief to support the developing countries’ economic recovery efforts and attainment of SDGs by the target date of 2030.

Mr. Bozkir briefed the Prime Minister on the various initiatives undertaken during his Presidency of the UN General Assembly to address key international political and socio-economic issues.

Mr. Bozkir is on an official visit to Pakistan from 26 to 28 May 2021, at the invitation of Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi. Mr. Bozkir – the first Turkish national to preside over the UN General Assembly – is a former diplomat and a senior politician.

He earlier visited Pakistan in August 2020 and also met the Prime Minister on that occasion.

Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi has said that today, the entire world is looking at Pakistan as a solution to every problem.

While addressing a joint press conference alongside United Nations General-Assembly (UNGA) President Volkan Bozkir on Thursday, the Foreign Minister said the United Nations (UN) must play its role in the resolution of Palestine and Jammu and Kashmir disputes.

“There are similarities between the Palestinian situation and that of Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.

FM Qureshi added that the oppressed peoples in both the territories faced the worst form of human rights violations and are demanding their right to self-determination.

He further stated that Kashmir Dispute is a reality and nobody can remove it from the agenda of the UN Security Council.

The Foreign Minister said, “Pakistan expects the UN to continue to play its leadership role for the revival of the peace process in the Middle East.”

“The fire there can be extinguished through dialogue and a two-state solution in accordance with the UN Security Council resolutions,” Qureshi added.

He said timely humanitarian assistance should also be provided to the Palestinians affected by the Israeli attacks.

Shah Mahmood Qureshi said Pakistan has supported the Afghan reconciliation process and will continue to do so.  He said Pakistan is supportive of the Istanbul process and international conference that should take place at the earliest in Istanbul.

“Inaction On Grave Palestine Issue is hurting UN’s credibility”: UNGA President

UNGA President sheds light on Palestine and Kashmir issue

The United Nations General-Assembly (UNGA) Volkan Bozkir has on Thursday said that the UN’s inaction on the issue of Palestine is hurting its credibility.

He was addressing a joint press conference alongside Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi today. The UNGA President has called upon India and Pakistan to pursue the path for peaceful resolution of the issue of Occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

“Peace, stability and prosperity hinges on normalization of relations between Pakistan and India, which is possible by finding the two countries resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute,” he said.

“Inaction on the issue of Palestine, which is a grave matter, is damaging the credibility of the United Nations and the Security Council,” Bozkir said.

The UNGA President further added that it is hoped that the Security Council will also hear a collective vote on this important and necessary issue.

“Hundreds of Palestinians have been killed in blatant human rights abuses,” Bozkir said. “Negotiations are urgently needed to establish two independent states. The UN General Assembly will not sit idly until peace is restored in the Middle East,” he added.

The UN leader also spoke about the Kashmir issue and said that he is well aware of the situation in Jammu and Kashmir.

“I know who a common Pakistani feels about the issue,” Volkan Bizkir added.

“I have always urged the parties to refrain from changing the status of the disputed territory. I urge India and Pakistan to work for a peaceful solution to this problem,” he said.

Commenting over Afghanistan Peace Process, Volkan Bozkir said that peace in the country is imperative for stability in the region.

“The Afghan peace process should be Afghan-owned and Afghan-led,” he said while appreciating Pakistan’s role in the peace process in Afghanistan.

The UNGA President also applauded Pakistan’s efforts in carrying the COVID-19 pandemic.

Note that Volkan Bozkir has arrived in Pakistan on a three-day official visit at the invitation of Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi.

During his arrival, he was received by senior officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a UN representative in Islamabad and the Turkish Ambassador to Pakistan Ihsan Mustafa Yurdakul at the airport.

During his stay, Volkan Bozkir will have detailed talks with the Foreign Minister and call on the Pakistani leadership. The interactions will cover a wide range of political and socio-economic issues on the United Nations’ agenda.

Volkan Bozkır is the first Turkish national to preside over the UN General Assembly. He had visited Pakistan last year in August before taking the charge as the President of the UN General Assembly.

Foreign Minister (FM) Shah Mahmood Qureshi has received the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) President Volkan Bozkir, who is on a three-day official visit to Pakistan.

According to the details, FM Qureshi held a meeting with UNGA President on his arrival at the Foreign Office in Islamabad today.

During the meeting, Volkan Bozkir reiterated that the United Nations (UN)  position on the Jammu and Kashmir dispute is governed by the UN Charter and relevant UNSC resolutions, calling for a free and impartial plebiscite under the UN auspices.

However, the Foreign Minister stressed the need for resolution of Palestine and Jammu and Kashmir disputes in accordance with the UN Security Council resolutions.

“Peace will remain elusive in the Middle East without the permanent resolution of the Palestine issue,” he said.

Qureshi further added, “Peace cannot be established in South Asia sans the resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute.”

The President of UNGA will hold important talks including regional peace and security issues. Moreover, Volkan Bozkir along with Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi will address a joint press conference and meet the top leadership including Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Peace Cannot Be Established Without Resolving The Palestinian Issue: Qureshi

Earlier, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi had said that peace in the Middle East cannot be established without resolving the Palestinian issue.

“My hands were strengthened by the unanimous resolution condemning Israeli attacks against the people of Palestine,” said the Foreign Minister.

FM Qureshi succeeded in adopting a joint strategy on the Palestinian issue with all political parties of Pakistan showing great support and generosity.

The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation OIC, Arab League, and Non-Aligned Movement member countries are grateful for the support received.

“I also met with the President of the Security Council”, said Shah Mahmood Qureshi.

“I would like to thank the Chinese Foreign Minister for his support on the Palestinian issue as China attaches great importance to the issue of Palestine,” he said.
